Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Richard - Congrats on your race and PR! I can't even fathom that race distance. But I guess everyone says that about a distance longer than their current training. ;)

Corinna - Congrats on your PR, however miserable. ;)

As for me, nothing new really. I feel like the broken record over here. Lots of stress the past few weeks. Nothing big, just little things I guess (business trips, lack of sleep, migraines, work issues). I'm frustrated that I'm still not back to running. Hip and knee are getting better, but can't make it more than a few minutes. Walking or elliptical I can do an hour or more, so it's just running that is the problem. In the past week I've finally increased my workout intensity. Without running, I was just walking and doing light strength training for weeks. Now I'm back to "jogging" on the elliptical and plan to get back to dancing and heavier weight training. Good intentions - now I need to execute them!

Dra-GON, not lizard! I don't do that tongue thing :lmao: (sorry, favorite line from the movie) I've a couple random days off this week between jobs so I can catchup for a change

Richard...congrats! Great race! What's up next for you?

Nicole...sorry you haven't been feeling well.

Christine...how was your walk?

Corinna...how's the new school working out? Congrats on your 10K!

John...I'd say I'll show you mine if you show me yours, but I think everyone's pretty much seen mine ;) My dragon took flight after my first (only) marathon a couple years ago. It's on my left ankle, which is the one thing that really limits my running, hence the taming of the dragon after completing the full. My half tat is more cheerful...a peace, love, Mickey, 13.1 kinda thing on the right ankle.

Jackie...I forgot Myrtle Beach was #13 for you guys. I'll add that to my list...everyone watch out for half marathon #13 ;) I think we were lucky that CMM wasn't canceled due to weather, but Nashville seemed to have been spared the worst of it.

If you look at the FB page for CMM, a LOT of people are pretty angry with the organizers for the way things were handled. The weather forecasts were pretty ugly, so I think the organizers did the best they could with the situation. There was an email the day before stating that anyone who wouldn't finish the full under 4:30 would be diverted to the half. I didn't get the email because we were traveling that day. We got to the start on Sat about an hour ealy to hear the announcement that they'd moved the race start up to 6:45 am (from 7 am). There were over 30,000 registered...33 corrals :scared1::scared1:

It was sprinkling when we first came out of the hotel to walk to the finish. I had told DH the night before that I wasn't doing the race if it was pouring when I got up...I just didn't have the intestinal fortitude to do another one in bad weather. We were in a hotel close to the start so walked there. By the time we got to the start corrals, the rain was done and eventually, the sun came out. DD17 did the race with me. I was thrilled with the earlier start idea, but we saw people still trying to make it into the corrals all the way through the first mile of the race. We were in corral 22 and it took nearly 30 minutes to get to the start line. The start corrals were in the middle of the road...as we moved up slowly, we saw a lady about 6 floors up in the Marriott, wearing a bib and watching out the window. Guess she was waiting until the last minute to come down for the race.

For those used to running flat land like in Florida, ummm...Nashville...very hilly. I was planning to start with R3/W2 for 3 miles then go up to R4/W1 like the last half, but DD17 didn't train again and the hills kicked both our tails. The race was cool...bands were spaced approx every mile along the course. Downtown Nashville was cool and so was the neighborhood around Music Row. LOTS of people came out of their homes to watch the race.

Bad, black, ugly clouds rolled in around mile 9. I was just hoping to finish without getting drenched. It held out until mile 12, but the lightning and thunder were getting scary. We finished comfortably, but the rain made the exit area chaotic. We finished at LP field where the Titans play...everyone was huddled against the stadium to stay out of the rain, talking on their cells, trying to find family and friends.

A lot of people who did the full were diverted to the half course at mile 11 and many were also diverted after that at about mile 20 when the weather came in again. They still got the full medal for finishing the shortened race. I can understand their frustration, but really think the race organizers were doing their best, especially after seeing what happened in Mississippi with that storm system. Nashville was under a tornado watch the whole day, including during the race.

That's half #4 for the year, 13 overall. #1 was cold, rain, sleet. #2 was unseasonably cold, #3 was rain and wind with a passing coldfront. I'm switching to duathlons for awhile, then back to halfs in Oct. Need 4 more to get to Uranus!

Dilemma...Wine and Dine is the same weekend as the duathlon where I've 'won' my division the past two years :confused3

btw, anyone watch Sanctuary? That's my latest Netflix find. It's kinda like the Mentalist meets Torchwood.

Hello cousins!

Congrats to Richard and Corrina for you PRs. :thumbsup2 I am amazed and inspired by both of you!!

Mel congrats on your race as well. That had to be scary with the weather. Remind me not to sign up for an event you are registered for...;)

My walk went well. Our official mileage is 107. We made it to the State House in Columbus about 1/2 hour ahead of schedule, so we had a few moments to regroup before the press conference with the First Lady (of Ohio). The rain held off for the most part which is a miracle since both Sat and Sun we were supposed to have thunder storms all day. The only time the rain was a bit uncomfortable was for about 2 hours yesterday morning.
We had about 20 walkers over the course of the weekend with 4 of us doing the whole thing. Previously we only had 2 of us finish (or even attempt to finish) all 4 days. It was nice to make new friends. I know I will do training walks with some of them in the future.

Sorry I don't have much time to catch up here, or post much. I am quite tired still and have some unpacking to do.

Richard - congrats on your race and new PR! That's quite an accomplishment given the unfavorable weather conditions. Nothing like what Mel and Corinna had, but it wasn't exactly cool in Houston last weekend.

Corinna - congrats on your new PR too!

Mel - congrats for finishing another half in tough conditions. When you get 45 degrees, cloudy, and no wind, you're going to kick some serious ***! And here, hopefully, is a pic of mine. We'll see if I've been able to get this to work right.

Christine - way to go on your walk! 107 miles is quite impressive!

Hope everyone else is doing well.

Thank you, Richard!! What a great surprise to come back from my walk and find that you had made a generous donation to my Breast Cancer 3-Day!! It really lifted me up! It means the world to me to have such support from my cousins!!! :goodvibes

Thanks for all the kind comments regarding my HIM race! I can quite honestly say I gave it my all that day, and I am very satisfied with putting out that kind of effort, regardless of the results being good or bad--and in this case they were more good than bad.

Christine - I'm honored to donate to your effort, you're doing the hard work...I just donated money, you are giving time and effort!

Mel - Congratulations on your race. Didn't you have weather issues for CMM last year, too? I have an idea what is next. I am considering going to the packet resell Friday night for a local (sold-out) triathlon if I am feeling up to it. If not, I might try to do one over Memorial Day weekend since ny USAT card expires on May 31, and I have not yet renewed. On that weekend there is a nice sprint tri on the other side of Houston on Saturday and there is a nice Olympic distance tri in Austin on Memorial Day itself.

Nicole - There is some truth to that, all longer races sonehow seem too long to try to me, that is until I do them.

Corinna - Outstanding performance on your part, I am impressed the way you are rolling off PRs. Good work in avoiding the "droened rat" look.

Debra - Thanks for the lead on the veggie recipies.

Finally, I have some bad news to report, so the first mention of it later doesn't become the first mention by accident. My FIL had an empty 1000 gallon water tank fall on him the other day. It knocked him over and landed on his right side. He ended up with a broken pelvis in the socket area. No he is looking at weeks in the hospital, including repair surgery next week. As bad as that all is, his prognosis is good for his recovery, although that will take a while. I am hoping a silver lining in all this will be that he might learn to relax and rest a bit in the long run, as he ALWAYS burns the candle at both ends with his business being his life.

Richard, I'm sorry to hear about your FIL. I'm glad his prognosis is good and wish him well in his recovery.

I have not been much of a posting cousin lately, too much going on...anyway...

Richard -- I'm sending big hugs and Congratulations, you can take them as needed! I'm very sorry to hear about your FIL, I wish him a speedy recovery. And I really liked your RR -- even though you had some obstacles and it wasn't exactly what you were hoping for, you clearly made the best of it and feel good about it, and that is a priceless accomplishment!

More Congrats to all our other racers, you should all be proud of yourselves!

I am fighting I don't know what. I keep waking up with chills and skipped my workout yesterday and today, but I can't stay home because I have too much going on at work. I haven't even had my DIS time at work, maybe I'm suffering from withdrawal...

I hope everyone is having a great week, and has plans for a wonderful weekend!

Maria :upsidedow

Am I forgiven if all I can manage is an occasional post? I'm trying to get in here a couple of times a week....

Richard: First, I'm so sorry to hear about your FIL's accident. How painful for him, and scary for all of you. I'm glad to hear accident wasn't as bad as it could have been but I know this will be a stressful time for all involved. My thoughts go out to you and will be with him during his surgery. I wouldn't place bets on him taking it easy though, as it sounds like he's a driven person. (Not that that's bad.)

You TOTALLY rocked your event. You PR'ed, despite the conditions. Especially because I imagine Saturday's events, with the canceled swim, would have caused pre-event concerns. (At least for me, they would have.) Those winds sound fierce! And I must point out that you were substantially faster on the bike, with negative splits, in those conditions. And you were so right to scale back to achieve a good HR! I'm glad to hear you say that you had a good event in the RR, but I thought I should re-iterate some highlights as it sounds like you're still being a wee bit hard on yourself.

Corinna: WTG on your 10K. I knew the conditions were soggy going in, and am impressed with your results. Woo hoo for meeting your goal, and I do think leaving the iPod at home was a good idea given the conditions. Oh, and sorry to hear about your friend Betsy--hope she's recovered.

Jackie: It was great to read the details of your 5K. I hope you're impressed with all that you've accomplished so far in 2010. You're crossing your year goals off one by one, and so early in the year! :thumbsup2 Do you like your Android?

Nicole: It truly sounds like you're doing the right thing, slowly and carefully upping the intensity with things and keeping to walking/elliptical/strength training for now. It must be frustrating not to run, though.

Mel: You're a complicated woman. All powerful "hear me roar" dra-GON as one part of your personality, all "peace, love, and good vibes" on the other. I like that in you. About CMM: Wow, people ARE angry. I've read your Examiner article on the event, and it sounds like they have some reason to be, even though there might not have been a better way to communicate the changes. (Not a RD, and can't imagine doing so for a race that big.)

33 corrals and half hour to the start! :scared1: Plus hills and the weather. I have to give it to both you and DD for doing so well in those conditions. It's not looking like 2010 is going to be an easy year for races, weather-wise, around the country. You need another tattoo for this one. And to do Wine and Dine. Inaugural race, baby.

Christine: I'm so glad your race weather stayed fairly friendly for your 107 miles! :worship: Do we get to see the pictures. I'm so impressed with everyone, especially the four of you who did all four days. And that you got to meet future training partners is just icing on the cake! (And yes, you deserve cake after the event.)

Maria: Oh, dear, you do sound like you're coming down with something. Don't push yourself too hard physically right now, maybe just some yoga and light walking. It sounds like your body needs rest.

AFM: Nothing exciting like the rest of you. The Pittsburgh marathon is this weekend. DOOD's running the relay this year; last year he keep up with teammates from relay spot #2 (his leg) to the end. This year, he's as leg #1, and thought he'd do the whole thing. It's been a rough semester, though, and now he thinks he might just do two legs.

I'm spectating, and my plan is to run to three checkpoints (about 8 miles total there and back), breaking up my long run into four segments. He runs faster than I do, but I can take shortcuts the let me see him and his slower teammates at different points along the route. What can I say, it's easier than doing the miles all at once, & I just have no interest in doing a hilly race course, especially when it's on I run on a regular basis.

Congrats to all on their awesome races. Richard and Corinna, you both rock with the PRs and Christine-- 107 miles :cool1:

Richard: I'll add my  for a quick recovery for your FIL

Mel: Great job under rough conditions. A coworker of mine got stuck in Nashville on Sunday night due to flight cancellation from the storm. I love the DRA-GON line form Mulan-- DD absolutely loves that part and quotes it rather often.

John: I love the tattoo

Debra: Sounds like you have the spectating plan all wrapped up. It was so great to see you cheering :cheer2: for Princess. I'm sure DOOD and his team will appreciate you being out there. Creative way to get in a LR if you ask me.

Maria: I hope you feel better  I've been enjoying the new V episodes and think of you when I watch them.

AFM: It's been really busy here as usual. We have the Broad Street Run this weekend-- a 10 miler in Philia that I'm looking forward to. The forcast is for a pretty hot day, but I'm hoping it will be ok. This coming weekend marks the 2 year anniversary of my racing. Minnie Marathon weekend was my 1st ever race. Since that time I've run 2 fulls, 9 halfs, 1 15K, 1 10 miler, 2 13Ks, 1 10K and tons of 5Ks. It still amazes me that I'm doing this.

Hey guys - I feel like my life has been shaken up and dumped all over the floor, but it's OK - we're all hanging in there with all the changes and whatnot. I am thinking it is good that my "Jupiter" race was cancelled - not sure how I could manage to be ready for that by June the way things have been going. Seriously, between meetings and appointments and everything, the training has been suffering. :sad2: So it goes at times, though. At least my weight continues to stay abot the same.

John - thanks so much for picking up the slack on the mixer - I definitely appreciate it!!

Maria - I do think with boys the uniforms really do streamline everything - my kids aren't even changing after school - of course these are pretty comfy uniforms - red or white polo shirt and navy pants or shorts.

Mel - those race conditions sound downright scary. I'll take miserable over miserable and scary any time! Glad you finished safely. Thanks for asking about the kids' new school. It is going pretty well. Kind of surreal, but they are making new friends and seem to be well-liked by their new classmates. It's the best we could have hoped for given the circumstances, I think.

Jen - your list of races in the past two years is incredible! Congratulations on you second race-iversary! I don't know when I'll stop saying that I miss the Minnie, but I still do!

Christine - 107 miles boggles my mind. That's an amazing long way to bike, let alone WALK! I think you must be made of steel!

Richard - I expect that's my last PR for a while. The next races are going to doubtless be in warmer conditions/more difficult courses and with spottier training. It's been a good winter/spring for PR's for both of us, though! :thumbsup2

So sorry about your FIL - I'm glad his prognosis is good, but my word, what a shock. Best wishes to him for a speedy recovery and comfortable convalescence.

Debra - my friend has recovered from her flu and is now planning a Muddy Buddy race with her daughter. Wild times! Have fun spectating and tell DOOD I say hello and good luck!

Nicole: Sorry about the stress and continued trouble with your injury. I sure hope that settles down soon, but what are the odds, given we are entering the month of Mayhem???

As for me:

Today, I helped my son's kindergarten class make leis from plumeria that had been flown in from Hawaii. What an aroma! Of course it made me think of my 'Ohana.

I've been taking it easy after Saturday's race. Of course. Kind of involuntarily. I would have liked to go to spin class yesterday but my older boy was home with a sore throat and I ended up staying home with him and doing a lot around the house. That has been the way it has been going lately.

They are doing a "Lazyman's Triathlon" at the YMCA starting June 1 - registration opens on Saturday. They call it that because you have, like 6 weeks to complete the distances. Plus you can substitute 3 hours water aerobics for the swimming. I am thinking I'll sign up, even if it is a little bit silly.

I still think I may have eluded the cameras at the 10K! They seem to be putting the photos up bit by bit. I found some from of me in the Challenge Obesity 5K the weekend before, though. This one was about 2.5 miles in. I actually managed to smile for the guy!

T_IMG_4742.jpg

Corinna: nice race picture-- mine never seem to come out well

Quick race report on the Broad Street Run (10 miler):This was a tough race. I was hoping to beat my 10 mile time from 2 weeks ago but the heat just killed me. After about the 1st 5K I realized a PR was just not going to happen. I also saw a bunch of people having trouble on the course and decided to slow down and be safe rather than risk injury for the sake of 5-10 min off my time. The fire hydrants were wonderful as were the med people at the end of the race. I went to medical to get a bag of ice for my knee that has been bugging me for a few days and wanted to prevent problems with it. The tent was full of people looking really bad-- oxygen, IVs, puke--not good. The medics were doing an amazing job.

We all did well-- had 3 friends run this with us. None of us exactly met our time goals but avoided injury and heat exhaustion. After the race we met up and hung out for a while. A bunch of us went to Don Pablos and my parents brought DD6 to eat with us-- we had a blast. Now back at home and just relaxing watching Pokemon with DD.

Hi Everyone!

I have just been assigned / directed to your Team and wanted to introduce myself! I have been on the DIS Boards for 10 years, but am relatively new to WISH - thank you for having me! :) I bought my first-ever pair of running shoes on my 42nd birthday, last year - with the promise to myself / goal of completing one of the Disney Half Marathons by the time I turn 45...........20 5K's, 2 10K's, and 2 Half Marathons later, I am registered for W&D in October (and the 5K in the MK, that morning! ;) ) and will register for Princess 2011 as soon as it opens! :) Now my goal is to complete Disney's Full Marathon by my 45th Birthday (which happens to fall in January!) in 2012! :)

Looking forward to meeting and catching up with all of you! Will go back, now, and catch up on all of your posts! Congratulations to everyone who raced, this weekend! :) (I did not - there aren't too many longer races scheduled, around here, so I'm in between 5K's, for now - I have a tiny one coming up before my DH and I go down to South Jersey to visit his Mom for Mothers Day Weekend on Saturday!)

And a special CONGRATULATIONS to Jennifer / jbucci - my fellow Rutgers alum, whom I enjoyed meeting at the Unite Half, 2 weeks ago, and whom I thank again for her kind words of encouragement! :) GREAT JOB with the Broad Street Run (ESPECIALLY in this crazy heat)! Another wonderful accomplishment - hope that you had a great time! :)

Thanks again for having me as part of your Team! (And I think that it's kind of serendipitous that I was directed to your team, as my DH proposed to me at the Poly 9 years ago.........right after we had dinner at 'Ohana! :) )

Hope that all is well with all of you! Have a great week and lots of continued good luck to all of you!

Lisa :)

Welcome Lisa:yay::yay::yay:

I enjoyed meeting you too. You have me tempted to do the superhero half in 2 weeks... decisions, decisions...

Welcome Lisa! We're always happy to have new team members!

Jen - Great job at Broad Street. Wise decision to slow down and take it easy. It sounds like conditions were way too dangerous to push it.

Corinna - So proud of you for continuing to hang in there, despite what life keeps throwing at you. Kids are amazingly resilient, particularly when they're young, and yours seem to be making the best of a really tough situation. Kudos to them too!

Richard - How's your FIL doing? Has he had the surgery yet?

Debra - Update on Pittsburgh, please! Just read the news about the bomb scare, and wondering how that affected you and DOOD. The race nightmares continue to plague us. Now we have sleet, freezing rain, snow, tornadoes, dangerous heat, bomb scares... As for the Android, well, there's a learning curve, but I do love it. DD is pitching a fit that it would be much better suited for her, since she would use more of its features, which just means that I have to learn all of it quickly!

We leave for Indianapolis Thursday as soon as DD finishes her last exam. Drove to Greenville yesterday and picked up the first load of her stuff so she won't have as much to bring home with her. Meeting a large group of WISHers for dinner Friday night after the Expo, and then the race is Saturday. Something along the size of Nashville - 35,000 people, corrals A-Z (we're in S, so I expect 30 minutes before we see the start line). And like Mel, I'm running it with a daughter who's half-heartedly trained. She did take jogging this semester, but that consisted of running 2-2 1/2 miles twice a week, and some days they only worked out in the fitness center. She's done 2 long runs - one 6 mile and one 10 mile. Should be interesting!

Jackie

Hi Team! I hope everyone had a good weekend! I was busy filling in for my FIL at his business, plus doing my own thing. I attended a local triathlon that I had wanted to do again since I did it last year, but it was inconveniently scheduled for the weekend following my 70.3. However, I did take the opportunity to gather with friends and cheer on the participants early Saturday. I am looking at my second tri of the year for later in the month, probably around Memorial Day weekend. My FIL's surgery has been pushed back a bit, he was moved to the cardiac care unit last night after complaining about chest pain. Although they do not think it was heart attack related, they do not want to take any chances; they more likely think it is abdominal discomfort related to a combination of being pinned down in bed and digestive issues (or so DW tells me). In addition, the doctors and nurses in this area seem to be paying more attention to his other injuries related to the construction accident (lots of bruising on back upper leg). As I finished up this post DW called to tell me that her Dad is awake and feeling better this morning. [editing to add that FIL's doctor at the hospital determined that he did, in fact, have a mild heart attack]

Lisa - Hi and welcome to the Team!

Corinna - That photo is definitely a keeper. You look good with that smile and mid stride positioning, and what a backdrop! I hope your training comes back together, but you have had such problems of late that I wonder how you are even getting in what you are still managing.

Debra - The FIL is a driven man, but you are right in that not being a bad thing. His idea of a relaxing day is one where he spends the day moving pallets of stuff around his construction yard with his forklift.

Christine - Great work on the 107 miles!!!

...and many thanks to all of your for well wishes and concern for my family.

P.S. - I have made a tentative hotel reservation at the Best Western Park Place Inn for my DL 1/2 trip.

First of all, helloooooo Lisa & welcome! It sounds like you'll fit right in with the cousins! :cool1: I love your running history, how you set a goal & run after it (chasing down many races in the process). The Disney full is in your sights, and there were many cousins (and WISHers) at the Princess. They all did fabulous! :thumbsup2 P.S. I also love the Poly!

Corinna: Speaking of fabulous, you look fabulous in that pic. Great stride, a smile on your face. The calendar girl for running. Now all we need is a pic of you (and Richard and Mel) in your leopard print. Month of Mayhem. :rotfl2:

JenB: I saw the RR on Broad Street on FB. It sounded rough, and there's always next year to get the PR on that race. You've got a long-tail strategy for running, so I'm glad you ran smart & safe. Your post-race relaxation sounds wonderful though!

Jackie: I can hardly wait for your RR on Indy. Not only do I know you're going to have a wonderful time with WISHers and on the course, I'm predicting a great race time for you, too! :thumbsup2 How's DD feeling about it? Confident? Ahhhh, youth.

Richard: It sounds like this set of doctors is really doing a good job taking care of FIL and looking out for his overall health. And I'm so glad you're there to help him with his business. That will help relieve him of some stress and aid his recovery, I'm sure. Do they have a reschedule date for surgery yet, now that they know it was a heart attack? :thumbsup2

Oh, and kudos to you for spectating! I find I like cheering people on much better if I've had a recent event. (Don't mention DL to me right now...I may be bitter here in about a week due to unexpected potential scheduling conflicts. Cross your fingers that this kind of potential doesn't realize itself.)

AFM, cross-posted with Leanies:

I'm up early, way early for me, trying to get things in. (Plus, the insomnia has kicked in.)

First, DOOD and the relay team are all fine. We didn't even know there was a bomb scare until the next day. You heard about it before we did. :lmao: Not that it was an easy race – DOOD actually quit earlier than he said he would (he finished his leg & then some, but didn't go nearly as far has he had planned). For the first time, he actually said that he "didn't respect the distance" in his training. That kind of talk scares me, coming from him.

Although...almost every person in his relay had a rough time of it. One person dropped out late the night before, which put more responsibility on all the rest. They were already a 4-person relay (and the race has 5 legs), it was pouring, and they were hurting. IDK.

If we would have known about the drop-out, I could have done a leg – as it stood, I'd planned to run between spectator spots to see them. I only got to run to the first spectator spot before DOOD saw me and quit and we walked back together. So much for Sunday's LR. But I did a SR on Saturday. Soooo, worst race ever. :rolleyes1 And poorly organized again this year. So glad I'm not doing the local Pgh races, and maybe – just maybe – it'll convince DOOD that we need to do another race that weekend.

Thing is, he likes doing relays with his buddies, and I want to support that. It's just the Pgh marathon isn't for me (again, I run parts of the course regularly, so I need different eye candy.)

Now, the sun is just coming up, I need to eat a little something & go out for a run. If I only got up this early every day I could really get things done! :lmao:

Welcome, Lisa! :goodvibes

Sounds like everyone is hanging in there.

Just a quick update. On Sunday I did my first successful run since the Princess. I did a few 3 minute intervals of running on the TM without pain. I'm cursed by the MN weather - stuck on the TM all winter and now stuck on the TM for allergy season. I wonder how much of my conditioning is gone after 8 weeks without running, and where to start in my training again. It feels strange to have completed a half marathon and going back to look at 5k training plans. I think my next run or two this week will help me determine where I am in my training now.

Thing is, he likes doing relays with his buddies, and I want to support that. It's just the Pgh marathon isn't for me (again, I run parts of the course regularly, so I need different eye candy. :)

If it's eye candy you're after, I've heard the Marine Corps Marathon is a good one to attend. Bay to Breakers also has some interesting scenery too. :rotfl:
