Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Debra - Nothing gives me that "you're loved" feeling by someone crying over my pending absence, of course the race is not sold out....yet. ;) However, my Ironman training has to take priority next year over everything else in the early part of the year. Still, I will be with you guys in spirit, and perhaps there will be room in my late summer schedule for a half marathon trip to the west coast around....let's say Labor Day...not to mention I am putting together an extended family trip plan for January 2012 to WDW.

Corinna - I see nothing inappropriate about Red Dwarf on the way to school. I can see where some Monty Python elements could be considered inappropriate for school-agers, but not Red Dwarf. After your children deserve a well-rounded education. Last weekend my daughters were discussing Red Dwarf (well, they mostly discussed how Darcy and I always watched and laughed at it) and went online to find the theme song. Also, I think that flask of yours would have come in handy this past January at WDW.

Maria - Awesometastic is a tough goal for a birthday, but is was a good day! :goodvibes btw, when my spell check popped up to say awesometastic was a misspelled word, I had it added to the dictionary.

Mel - I am very sorry to hear about your stress fracture, but I am glad to know that you are going to follow sound advice (even if it is just your own) to let it heal. Those cupcakes, however :scared1: look so sweet, innocent and dangerous all at once.

Well, like Maria, I have to be back at working again, so I will be off for now...

She's also "available and free." Couple that with her flask of bourbon, and she's my kind of girl.

:scared1: I hasten to point out that those adjectives are only applicable when it comes to PAINTING!!!!

As for surreptitious sips and drinking around the monorail....I joke about it, but everyone knows I have a 2 drink maximum, right? I've never drunk around anything at WDW except maybe Jellyrolls. Where they only have 2 bars.

Actually, I was watching Monty Python on TV by the time I was as old as my younger son, and was watching Monty Python's Meaning of life by the time I was my older son's age. And I can't say I've been scarred for life, but I also can't say "And look how I turned out!

I've just been surprised by the amount of more "adult situation" dialogue there is in Red Dwarf. It's not something I remembered much at all from when I watched it for the first time in high school!

As for the flask coming in handy last January, I think I was happier with my little hand-warmers and hat than I would have ultimately been with a fuel belt full of spirits. :)

Bad News: The Jingle Bell Run is happening the same morning as a massive blizzard is supposed to sweep into the area. My son's Lego tournament has been proactively cancelled. I don't know if they will hold the race or not, but Rather than scary driving for 20 miles followed by scary running for 3.1 and then more scary driving home again, I think I am going to opt for staying home and keeping the snow off of the driveway and road before it freezes into a rock (I heard -15 air temp late Saturday, early Sunday.) Yes, my friends, the battle is afoot, and I stand ready to hold the line.

In Other News: I am pondering a local marathon in the spring. I feel like the full has been taunting me long enough, and if those Biggest Loser people can train for one in a month, surely I can train for one in 7 months...or so. I had been thinking of Twin Cities in the fall, but the more I think of it, the more I think that summer is really my off season for training. My best training period is winter to spring while the kids are in school and the weather is warming up. For right now, I'm not committing, but I am definitely pondering. :rolleyes1

That was an inside joke -- I never meant to imply you drink to excess! There was someone on another thread Corinna and I are on who was giddy about that prospect, and we both commented that was a bit, well, less than magical considering the entire situation. Mea culpa! :flower3:

Wow, a Full! I know you can do it if you decide to! :cheer2:

AFM: Did my 10M yesterday when I got up at 5:30. It went well and it was a great feeling to have it done. It's an even better one today, since I now have the day free to get ready for :santa:

DH and ds are shopping for me today. Not only did I make a list, I created envelopes with the coupons I have for the stores where most of it comes from, and I wrote the coupon type on the outside of the envelope, along with the items on my list. I've never done this before, and they always do a good job getting what I want, but not necessarily using the coupons. This should help

Ok, off to get this day started! So Debra, -- I'm looking for a new movie this season both my ds12 and my Dad74 can enjoy together (it's a tradition that my dad takes ds to a holiday movie). Any suggestions? DS informs me he's really too old for Yogi Bear...we generally let him see PG13, but I need something my dad (who thinks "On Golden Pond" and "ET" were the greatest movies ever made, and generally has been perfectly happy with what I would call the "good" [often known as Pixar] kid movies) would enjoy, too. :confused3

Good for you! If you're going to run a local one, you HAVE to make it Grandma's. It's supposed to be one of the best marathons in the country and always gets rave reviews from runners for the course, volunteers, runner support, goodies, etc. I think it's held in May or June, perfect for you to hit after a spring training season. :)

I hope everyone is doing well and not too overwhelmed by in-laws, parties, snow, or some combination of all of them this holiday season. I'm really looking forward to starting my taper soon. After a 50k this past weekend (race report coming soon) and a 22 miler scheduled this weekend, I'm more than ready for it. The fact that my taper kicks off with five days in Vegas is even better. :yay:

What about Tangled? My friends who have seen it really liked it. Not as clever as a Pixar movie (but what is?), but they said it was enjoyable and pretty funny too.

True, but it is still a good one. I think some of Tangled comes across as a mesh of classic Disney and Pixar, with a splash of Dreamworks for good measure. I went with family that included an 11 yo boy who enjoyed the movie. However, I think another good "boy" option movie would be Megamind. I hate to go off the Disney reservation, but I think it appeals to both younger and older viewers and would be viewed as more "boy-friendly" by the boy in question.

John - With last weekend's 50K, I think your 22 miler this weekend is already tapering down. I heard some rather poor descriptions of the race in Huntsville last weekend so I can't wit to hear your experiences.

Corinna - I give you the point about Monty Python, and you seem to have turned out just fine from my point of view (although one might have to consider how I turned out for that last statement to have any real value :rotfl:). I hope you and the rest of the cousins all have a snow-studded, snowpendous, and snowtacular winter!

AFM - I'm heading off to bed early tonight as I have a 6 mile run in the early AM and then a midday 3300 yd swim (well, as much as I can get in is a more likely description) between daily meetings. Keep warm, everyone!

John -- Thank you for the suggestion. I have to say, though, Richard is right, my almost 13 yr. old 7th grader is not going to be caught dead going into Tangled without a younger child present, he definitely couldn't take the teasing! I, on the other hand, really would like to see it!

Just wanted to check in and say hello. I hope everyone is keeping warm. We have not had any snow yet, but we definately have super cold weather-- bitter and windy!

Training is coming along for Jan, not sure if I'm really ready but not too much I can do at this point. We have a 20 miler on tap this weekend then taper. We decided to bite the bullet and get a new TM-- ours is old and rusty and generally nasty, so the 20 miles will hopefully be done on our new spiffy one if it gets delivered in time.

We had a blast at our friends' wedding this weekend. I was matron of honor, DD a flowergirl and DH a groomsman. It was a great day but we still feel a bit sleep deprived and hungover (although I didn't even have anything to drink).

We need to set up an Ohana meet. I'm all for the Beaches and Cream meet Sat afternoon, but could be talked into almost anything.

Hello cousins!

Got back last night from a long weekend in NYC. Tried to burn off some Delta vouchers. Of course, the trip reminded me of why I dislike Delta, with delays, mechanical problems, etc.

I still need to catch up on all the old posts to see what's going on. I'll do some short posts now, then go to work out, then back in for more stuff tomorrow.

Still haven't made any ADRs or done any planning. We're there from Wed. to Wed at CBR. For those who care. :goodvibes

Corinna: I'll check with DOOD about Boma & preferred dining places. Maybe I should prioritize places with bourbon. And if I had a kid, I'd play Red Dwarf, Monty Python & Dr. Who for them all the time. Until they could quote it ad nauseum. Because I'm that kind of gal.

And, if I can combine drinks with cult movies & TV, I'm in heaven! There's got to be a drinking game in the combo that you definitely shouldn't introduce your kids to - until they're at least a couple of months older. :lmao: I'd drink to excess if I could afford enough of the good stuff, btw. In short, I think we may be alike in our various tastes.

I am not, however, the type to combine an easy run with sprints to get a long run in. Unless I were sprinting to something worthwhile. Say, cupcakes. You're crazy mad, woman! But at least you didn't risk driving for the Jingle Bell Run. I caught some of the news this weekend on the Weather Channel, and MN was really hit hard. And I think you should commit to the marathon distance. I think you're more than ready & would enjoy the challenge.

Maria: Sadly, we don't get HBO & I'm looking forward to catching up on "Boardwalk Empire." Big fan of Sheldon - er "Big Bang Theory." I aspire to his wardrobe, which tells you something about my sartorial taste.

Ah, families and holiday movies. Just my kind of family. Honestly, we're wondering the same thing. No kids, but thinking about DOOD's parents. I just read a NYTimes article on the Coen Brothers' "True Grit." I've seen the John Wayne film, want to see this one. I'm thinking about pitching it as a holiday film. It's rated PG-13, with some violence, but the Coen Bros. are saying it might be a family film. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/12/movies/12grit.html I wouldn't have thought so, particularly, but will consider the possibility.

I'll try to think of other, maybe more immediately family-friendly titles. I saw "Tangled," and thought it was cute. But not Pixar of course. Is "Tron: Legacy" not on the short list? It's PG and I swear if I were the right age it would be the definitive sci-fi film for me. Son seeking father, all that jazz. (I hear the visuals are great, storyline a little weak, but....)

John: Well, I suppose you could split the difference. The best bars in DHS on Marathon Monday? So long as you didn't do RnR afterwards. Like I said, we haven't made any plans yet and will be hanging pretty loose, I think, while at WDW. Great suggestion on Grandma's, btw. I've only heard good things about the race.

Speaking of good things, most excellent news on starting your taper while visiting Vegas! Is that a holiday trip, family trip, or sanity trip. In my world they don't overlap! :rotfl2: (And well-earned taper, too.)

Richard: Of course your IM training & dreams have to take priority. I understand that, intellectually. Unfortunately, I have the emotional maturity of a 3 yo. :rotfl2:

Jen: Your weekend sounds just about perfect, filled with love, friends and family and lots of memory making. That is, except for the non-hangover hangover. (I resent those more than real hangovers, for whatever reason.) Will you be posting some pics? I'm sure you all look great, and DD makes a precious flower girl. And congrats, in an odd way, for the decision to get a new TM. Sort of an expensive investment, but at least it is an investment in something healthy and a source of stress relief, goal setting, etc. Sometimes I long for the convenience of a TM at home.

AFM: NYC was fun, busy, and expensive - not always in that order. No Broadway for us, as we didn't get chosen for the lottery. But tons of things to do and places to eat. We ran at one of the local gyms because it was pouring rain - so it was just like being at home. Except we came back to snow and frigid temps. :lmao: I swear, I hope it's not cold in Jan. I don't know if I can "man up" if it is.

Okay, off the gym now. My schedule is thrown completely off today because of the weekend.

Hi Cousins!
I guess it's been a little while over here. So to recap for those not following along on Facebook (which if any other cousins want to be friends over there, I'm definitely up for it!):

1. Snownanza! AKA SNOMG, AKA Snowmageddon, AKA Domebuster 2010 - yes, we got something in the vicinity of 20" in a 24 hour period this past Saturday. And yes, I have a nice wide driveway, encroaching plow issues and no snow blower. And yes, I managed to keep us dug out with just a couple of assists - Andrew and one DS came out and pushed some snow around toward the end of the evening when I'd already logged nearly 5 hours of shoveling and feared I'd never get caught up, and my neighbor beat me to the snow-bump the next morning. I also dug out the storm drain which I hope will prevent another ice-rink effect when this stuff starts melting. I'd been training for this event all year and I have to say, it was a true victory. I felt like a fearsome snow warrior out there, beating back the elements, braving the winds!

2. We have strep throat here now. My younger son is the most hard-hit by it and the antibiotics didn't agree with him last night. Fortunately, after I called, the angelic nurse talked to the boys' regular doctor (whom we had not seen earlier) and he said to change the prescription and made it happen. So that is good. I also have a positive strep test and so does my older son. CASH seems to have escaped this time, the lucky dog!

3. I'm not loving the new Weight Watchers plan - remember how I said I was back to my right weight? Well, then I wasn't - the new plan just has too much wiggle room and leeway for me. I need a solid structure, people. Solid. So I'm trying out the myfitnesspal app and website. So far, I'm pretty happy with it.

Maria: The movies on our short-list are (Still) Harry Potter, and of course Tron:Legacy. My boys watched the original this summer and we're all very excited about it, as you can tell by...my hair. I can not believe how organized you are with your wishlist and coupons!!

John - Grandma's in the second half of June is always a tough one for me because of other obligations. Plus a 2-3 hour drive and manditory hotel stay....would make it feel more like an "away" race even if it is in Minnesota. That being said, I would love to do that one someday - I love Duluth and there is some truly gorgeous scenery up there. Hope your time in Vegas was good!

This is the one I'm looking at - it is probably about 30-45 minutes from my front door and would allow for a taper during the month of Mayhem. Also, it's a 3 day weekend, so that is nice!

http://www.stillwatermarathon.com

JenB - Congratulations on the wedding AND the new treadmill! I tell you, from what Butch says about his sweat capacity, it's probably a miracle your TM lasted as long and as well as it did! The photos from the wedding on Facebook were gorgeous and it looked like a very fun day. That's pretty cool that you were all 3 in the wedding!

Debra - Welcome back from the Big Apple! I totally hear ya on Delta, since that is our main option out of MSP at this point. We still fly with them, but we always go into it with my travel mantra in mind: Expect Delays.

Speaking of Drinking Games, I just made up a Drinking Game for The Sing-Off. That show has some very silly recurring events. Mostly on the part of the host, Nick Lachey. :rolleyes1

Do we know if Jeanne and Juan will be at Marathon weekend this time around? It seems like it wouldn't be the same without them...

Sounds like Ohana @ Beaches and Cream on Saturday afternoon is still the favorite plan? I tell ya, I'm the worst one to coordinate these things.... What time? Maybe 3?

Who wants to do Boma or Brown Derby? If you do, give a holler - does Saturday night or Sunday night sound preferable? I'll make a reservation, but I need to know if it should be for something in the realm of 2 or 10. :-)

Has anyone read the Warriors series? Its an upper elementary series about feral cats, basically. Who knew you could get more than a dozen books out of THAT concept? My older son read some, now my younger son is excited to have them read them aloud to him. We do admit they are basically a kitty soap-opera, however! :cat: paw: paw: paw: paw:

Hope your time in Vegas was good!

Just stopping in for a quick second. We haven't gone to Vegas yet. We're leaving next Wednesday and returning on Sunday the 26th. My race report for the trail run is almost done, and once it is, I'll post it here and also catch up on everything Richard, Corinna, Jen, Debra, Maria, and everyone else has been writing about. :)

Here's my 50k race report. I copied it straight from my blog so it's a bit on the long side. Thanks for indulging me. :)
-----
This wasn't a race I had really planned on doing. While I do want to complete the Texas Marathon Challenge this year, my primary focus is still on getting through another Goofy Challenge at Disney. After the problems at San Antonio with my hamstring cramping and then having it start tweaking during my 16-mile long run on the 4th, I was concerned that 50k on trails might not be the best thing to do. I ended up signing up anyway, mostly because I wanted to be able to say I did it and love running in the Huntsville state park, but also because I'd been talking about it with Devin, one of my online running buddies, for a few weeks and would feel bad if I didn't show up.

The night before the race, I decided to skip my usual pre-long run meal of pizza and head out for sushi instead. It worked really well at the Disneyland Half a few months ago, so I figured it would work here too. Throw in breaking some other superstitions about what not to do before a big event, and I had plenty of ready-made excuses in case things didn't go well. Thankfully, the dogs let me sleep most of the night without asking to go out, the alarm went off at 440am, and it was time to get moving. I hadn't driven to Huntsville for a year or so, but Heather told me it took her about an hour and twenty or thirty minutes to get there for her flyball tournaments. I normally leave for my In Flight group long runs at 5 anyway, so I didn't have to change that part of my routine any to get to the race in time to get my packet and relax a bit before the 730 start. As I sped through the darkness along Beltway 8, I still had nagging doubts in the back of my mind about going. I was having trouble getting comfortable with the notion that 50k is a good training run when it'd be just as beneficial to run 18 miles with my training group. I finally told myself "what the hell, it's only one run and if it goes badly, you've got a month to recover," and turned north on I-45.

I pulled into the park shortly after 6. Note to self: it only takes an hour to get to Huntsville before sunrise. I wasn't thrilled with the extra sleep I missed out on, but I had Devin beat. He thought the race started at 630 and was there at 530. Ouch. I wandered into the lodge to pick up my bib and other goodies. We received a nice tech shirt and a pair of plain white cotton gloves. Not sure the gloves were really necessary since it was already 55 degrees out, but they'll make good articles for tracking with Harlow. I spent the next hour resting in my car sipping on Powerade and tinkering with getting my bib pinned on straight. Yes, I'm one of those people who aren't happy unless it's centered and level. Besides, what else was I going to do to kill time? Right after I had the bib on my shirt just the way I like it, I realized that my fuel belt would cut right across the bottom of it once I put the belt on. I moved the bib to my shorts and only took a few tries to be happy with the placement. Progress! I grabbed my bag, stuffed with extra shoes and socks, Clif bars, goo, and sport beans, and wandered off to the start line. I found a tree not too far from the line to drop my bag and started trying to find Devin. We'd never met in person, but he wasn't hard to find. There weren't any other tall guys with Dynamo jerseys to be found. We chatted a bit, joined the other two hundred runners behind the line, and then we were off.

The 50k course is three loops in the park, the first just under 7 miles and the second two just over 12. Neither one of us really had a time goal for the run, so we settled on targeting 12 or 12:30 minutes per mile just to keep us moving along. We decided to go faster on the first loop and then take it easy for the two longer ones. Of course, being trail running, faster is open to interpretation. In this case faster meant about a 10:30 pace without much walking of the uphill sections. The first loop just flew by as we talked about soccer (we're both Dynamo season ticket holders), running Rocky (he's done the 50 several times and is training for the 100, I've done the 50), Goofy, and whatever else came to mind.

When we got back to the turnaround, I hit the porta-potty, stopped by my bag to grab my fuel belt and eat a goo at the aid station, and we set out for the first 12-mile loop. As we entered the woods again, Devin mentioned that he didn't grab a goo because he didn't want the caffeine. Uh oh. I had just eaten half a bag of chomps and hadn't noticed anything about caffeine. After getting the jitters for the last four miles of the 2005 Rock n Roll half in Virginia Beach, I avoid goo with caffeine at all costs. This is not what I needed with 24 miles left to go. After more than a few minutes of panic, I managed to read the bag carefully and find the words "No Caffeine." Whew! I also gave Devin one of my Clif shots since I know they're safe. Side note: that was the last goo I had until munching on some sport beans around mile 27. My body just can't handle that much sickly sweetness during a long trail run. I fueled up with chips, salted potatoes, and pretzels at every aid station instead. The fully stocked aid stations are one of the best things about trail runs. No pizza, soup, or meat loaf this time like we had at Rocky, but they had just about everything else - flat coke, chips, crackers, bananas, M&Ms, trail mix, mixed nuts, and plenty of cold water and sports drink. Plus, the volunteers will help fill your bottles while you eat.

Part way through this loop, we found ourselves leap frogging with Bob Botto and two of his friends Nancy and Lorraine. Bob's a very experienced ultra runner who recently retired from Exxon. He was the head of our corporate track & field team and also sends out really great race reports from all of his events. This was Nancy's first ultra and he was sticking to a pretty tight schedule of walk breaks to make sure she finished it strong. Since Bob tells great stories and because it's always fun to run with a group, we decided to run the rest of the race with them. We'd cruise along at a 10-minute pace until we felt the trail start to incline, at which point we'd walk and talk. And that's how it went for the rest of the day. Some shuffling, some trotting, some walking. Bob told us stories (his recent finish at Comrades and the guy who died during Rocky many years ago and can be seen at night during the 100-miler were two of the favorites), Nancy got excited about being able to call herself "Ultra Nancy," and Devin and I kept the pace up front. Our best accomplishment was getting out for our third loop and off the part of the trail where people were running in both directions without seeing or getting lapped by the leaders. Well, that's not quite true. Our best accomplishment was finishing, but that kind of goes without saying. The last mile went by faster than all the rest. We made the right-hand turn at the nature center, and before we knew it, we were turning left under the powerlines for the last few hundred yards to the finish. In a reflection of how much we enjoyed running together all day, we spread out five abreast as we ran across the line. Once done, we were handed our medals, chose our hoodies, and went off to change. I put on my slides and walked over to meet Bob and Devin behind the lodge where pizza and tortilla soup awaited us. Rather than just sit down on a bench, I decided to dangle my legs in the lake and take advantage of nature's own ice bath. Painfully cold, but definitely well worth it.

I'm always amazed at how effortless endurance running seems when you're doing it with a great group of people. The time and miles on the trails just flew by. I was having such a fun time chatting and joking with everyone that my worries about my hamstring never materialized. Even when I could feel it twitching a little, I never spent time dwelling on it and didn't mention it to the rest of the group. We were all running so strongly that I wasn't going to be the one to slow us all down. Plus, the mental energy I'd waste thinking about it was better spent telling stories, offering encouragement, and driving us all to the finish. The only real problem I had all day was when my Body Glide started to wear off. I noticed the onset of chafing when we had about eight miles left. Rather than stop, I decided to wait for the next aid station that I knew we'd get to in less than a mile. You can imagine my disappointment when they told me they didn't have any Vaseline. I didn't think the band-aids I had with me would do much good, but I lifted up my shirt and stuck them on anyway. I was too sweaty for them to stick well and am not sure how long they stayed in place. I did make it to the end without any bleeding, though, so I'll take that as a victory. Next time, I'll reapply the Body Glide after the second loop.

One interesting thing to note about my time. My Garmin, which stops counting whenever I stop moving, had my time at 6:13, while my official time is 6:35. That's a lot of time spent at aid stations and restocking from my bag after each of the first two loops.

Corinna—I don’t think I ever told you, but that floor looked fabulous! Are you coming to Princess—you know they make Maker’s mark around here don’t you? We do like our bourbon in these parts!;) And way to go on all that cross training—aka snow shoveling! We had an ice storm this week. It was pretty nasty. The news said they treated 100s at the er for falls.

Mel—hope you are feeling better! We’ve been in the bakery at DHS lots of times! Last trip DS got some cheesecaky thingy for breakfast! Those cupcakes looked yummy!

Debra—hope the shins are improving.:goodvibes

Hi Maria!

JenB—hope the new treadmill made it for your 20miles.

John—hope you have fun in Vegas! I loved reading your race report. I can’t even imagine running 50k, but then again I can’t imagine running more than about 15 miles! Congratulations on what sounded like a really fun race!

AFM—I have been busy getting the BL spring team challenge up and running. I am hosting for the first time. My DS is home from college, which has been great. And we leave for wdw on Tuesday for a week. So that’s pretty exciting! :goodvibes

I am happy to report that I ran 10 miles on the treadmill this morning with no stomach problems!!! Finally! I think the nausea was coming from just not getting enough sodium and water. I had Gatorade and some pretzels and an endurolyte before the run. An enurolyte at 4 and 8 miles, a gu at 6 and pretzels and trail mix while doing my cooldown. I also drank enough water during the run that my weight when I got home from the Y was the same as when I got up in the morning! I had some more pretzels at home and a hard boiled egg with salt. I eat almost no salt normally, so I have been thirsty all day, but feel so much better. When I finished the run I was covered in salt—so I guess I really am sweating it out. So between what I’ve been doing pre-run for the gi stuff and what I’m doing for the nausea, I think I have a plan. My next long run (11 miles) is in 2 weeks.

Hope everyone is doing great!

Rose - That whole running nutrition thing is very tricky, it seems you are getting a good handle on it.

John - Thanks for the great report. It sounds like you had a much better experience than some others I know who did the race.

Corinna - I wish you the best in your continuing war against the snow buildup. I can only imagine that it provides quite the workout as cross-training. Ah, Tron, I wish I had the time to see it this weekend, but I will see it soon enough! Yesterday, my older daughter was asking Darcy about the original Tron and Darcy walked over to the entertainment center and handed DD the DVD. ;)

Debra - I'm glad to see that the weather doesn't keep you from traveling and doing fun stuff. I know you'll love escaping the cold for WDW in a few weeks, at least assuming it is warm this time.

AFM - I got to attend a local press conference yesterday where a new local race was announced. It seems my neighborhood will be getting a new marathon in 2012 (March 3rd is the tentative date). I don't really know whit is going on with the Ironman and a marathon coming here. I guess a few race directors ave figured out how many locals travel out to races. Other than that, I had sooo many deadlines converge last week. :scared1: Due to the holidays, events that normally take place over a 3 week period all happen between last Tuesday and next Monday. Fortunately, it is all easy for the balance of the month from there.

Corinna - I hope everyone is healing up from their strep. Having the whole house sick with it at once can't be any fun. And I'm sure it didn't make the snow shoveling any easier.

Rose - Great job on the 10 miles and no stomach problems. Figuring out what works and what doesn't is never easy, and it sounds like you've just about got it nailed down. I hope to be reading another good report in two weeks.

Richard - I saw the news about the Woodlands marathon too. Maybe the race directors are also seeing how many people didn't get in to Houston and want to soak up some of that demand. I hope it doesn't hurt Seabrook's entries though. That's one of my favorite little marathons around here.

Jen - congrats on the new TM. There's no way I could ever run 20 miles on a TM, so I'm really impressed that you can. What do you do to stay focused? I get bored silly just doing 6.

AFM - I ran my last long run (18 miles) before Goofy yesterday. Now it's time to start tapering and remembering to ease up on the eating to go along with the reduced mileage. I'm sure that won't happen in Vegas, but should be doable once we get back next Sunday.

Happy holidays everyone! :santa:

Hello, cousins!

Just had a busy pre-holiday travel shopping and baking weekend. We're headed to Santa Fe this time around, and will be spending Christmas with my ILs and our newest niece. Flying Southwest and not Delta, so all is good with the world. :goodvibes Even if I still expect delays.

Meet-up plans?

'Ohana... 3 p.m., Saturday, Beaches and Cream. Sound good?

Corinna...DOOD and I are up for either a Boma or Brown Derby (or Sanaa for that matter) on dinner on Saturday. We think Boma might have a fun atmosphere, but we're cool with whatever. What does anyone else think?

Corinna: For some reason, I didn't realize you were that far away from Duluth? Stillwater is lovely, and Dick's puts on a good marathon here in Pittsburgh.

Anyway, I'm so sorry to hear about your strep throat (and that of your DS). What awful timing. I hope everyone has turned the corner on it. I'll be returning to my own weight-loss program post marathon - I gained an embarrassing amount in 2010; wasn't my year for good health practices. I'm trying to get things under control now, but I know that I'll be drinking my calories on the family get-together. (Family relationships are much more fluid when there's liquid involved. :lmao:)

John: Your 50 RR is absolutely fabulous in its detail - and not too long at all. I would have opted for the pre-race pizza, but I'm a vegetarian & so not to be trusted with such decisions. :rotfl: So happy to know you're the type to want to perfectly pinned bib...I'll carefully inspect yours come January. I do have to ask you this - I do trail runs, but short ones, and never an endurance length race. Why flat coke? Sugar + caffeine w/o the carbonation? I don't drink soda when running, so am not sure why you'd avoid carbonation? Or maybe I don't want to know. :rotfl2: Last thing - I'm so happy you had a good race, with good friends, and no hammy problems. You rock!

Have a great, great time in Vegas. I'm sure it'll be fun and there will be plenty of things to do so that you won't even miss taper!

Rose: Great news about your 10 miler w/o problems or incidents! I always feel like it's such a victory when I can tweak something like fueling with my miles. It makes everything go much smoother. It sounds as if your body really needs a lot of salt during and after the run. :thumbsup2

Richard: Wow, adding another marathon in your neighborhood is good for you. I know you like the temptation. Er bling. Er challenge and motivation. :lmao: I assume you'll sign up for it the race fits your IM schedule? I don't envy you your holiday schedules. Here, we're looking at a glorious couple of weeks where work loads are very light.

AFM: I did my 10 miles today, on a TM. Been a long time since I did that kind of mileage indoors. Titanic was on, a movie I've never seen. I didn't aspire to see it either - it wasn't finished when I finished and I didn't care to see the end. Blech.

I don't know quite what I'm planning for next week in terms of mile. I don't think I'll plan to taper, per se, but we'll see what the family schedule is like. Anything between 8 -12 will make me happy. At this point, there will be no racing for the 1/2. Just running it for fun. Of course, that's what a Disney race is all about anyway. :cool1: I'm just hoping that I get my mojo back for 2011.

ETA: Wanted to let people know two things.

1) I saw "Tron: Legacy" and was lukewarm on it. It's nice visually, although I'm not sure it was an innovative as "Tron" in that aspect. (I don't want to trust my memory on that.) But the plot is weak, as are the characters. "Star Wars" fans should love all the shout-outs to the saga, though.

2) Expedition Everest Challenge has opened race registration. Disney changed the date again, moving it to May 7, 2011. I'd like to do the race sometime, but it's only a 5K and I'd have to plan my travel around other things. Like Corinna said on FB, it's a long way to travel. (She said it better/funnier.)

Plus, in 2011 it's at the end of the semester and I'm still hoping to spend a month at WDW over the summer - depending on other trips. There is that D23 Destination D trip May 14-15 at Walt Disney World. Is anyone going to that? It's preceded by a scavenger hunt but not an adventure race.

You don't want the carbonation because bad things can happen when you're running for so long with lots of bubbles in your stomach. When it's flat, coke turns out to be a pretty good second option for a sports drink. No fancy electrolytes, but the sugar and caffeine work really well.

And a month at WDW? Wow! :yay:

3 P.M. @ Beaches and Cream sounds great, I guess this is now a standing meet for Ohana--shows you where you where our priorities are! ;) Of course, I will not be there this year, although 2012 is looking really good from my point of view...in fact, I seem to be lining up the marathons for 2012. First, Disney in January, then here in The Woodlands (how can I not do the inaugural race in my hometown?) in March, and then I am one of several pushing the MCM as my running club's destination race for the year (October). Of course 2012 is far enough off for me to worry about it later on :rolleyes1.

Debra - I think I love the sound of your summer schedule!

Oops, wanted to write more but I gotta go!
TTFN!

ETA - I was suddenly available to see Tron:Legacy this afternoon. I generally liked the movie and can see how it is set up for sequel(s). Several Star Wars shout-outs were nice to see, and I suppose were in keeping with a digital world created by Flynn. The effects were definitely better than the plot line, but there is still enough story there for a good movie.

Hi Cousins,

Just wanted to stop in say a quick hi. I've been having major computer issues and never know when my computer will decide to work, so I wanted to be sure to wish everyone happy holidays :santa: and good luck to all of you doing the WDW races in January. :cool1:

It feels really weird to not be doing the marathon this year, but I'm 99% sure we'll be there in 2012.

I hope I'll be back to posting regularly before you all leave for marathon weekend - if Santa brings me a new computer.

Hi Cousins!

Please indulge my post that is all about me...

Ok, in the news I've been dreading posting, just 'cause it's hard...last Friday I ran 12M, and I was so pleased when I got off the TM. That's the first time I've ever run that far and it not been in a race. My good mood quickly evaporated when dh told me he'd moved up Worf's (kitty) appt. with the vet because he didn't look good. And he didn't -- he didn't seem to have control over his motor functions, or even able to hold his head up. We took him in and he passed his kidney tests, but he just didn't look good. We took him back home, and over the night it became clear that Worf was just not going to have a good quality of life -- he couldn't eat, drink, or really walk. He found a way to get up on the bed and sleep with me, and I swear it took every bit of his energy to do it, and he did it because he knew it was the last time. We called the vet and spent the morning saying goodbye, then dh took him for the last time. They don't let you stay with them at the end, and I think that's probably a good thing. The vet thinks he had a stroke, because he went downhill so fast. He was fine Thursday, his usual inquisitive and affectionate self, demanding love and attention. So, after 17 years, Worf Everett Doodles Davis aka Worfiedoodles, has been laid to rest. :sad1: I'm keeping my screen name, 'cause he's always in my heart. ::yes::

I'm just glad this happened while we were here instead of at WDW, I would be devastated if I hadn't been able to say goodbye properly.

And I can't end on a sad note -- so let me say it has been interesting having my dad and smom visit since last Sunday. I am very happy they are visiting until Jan. 12th (they stay with ds while we go to FL), but there have been some challenging moments with the smom commenting on my eating (apparently too much), and her cooking -- this is not her best skill, but of course I can't tell her -- nothing anywhere near the Debra category of outlaw intrigue, but enough to keep me um, anticipating angst. ;)

Oh! And did I mention I had to ask them to turn down the heat about half an hour before I'll be home to work out? The first day I went down to the basement and they had it set on 80 :scared1: I felt like I was running in Phoenix! :rotfl:

In case I don't get to post again before -- Merry Christmas! :santa:

Maria :upsidedow
