Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

Here I am again, saying that I need to check in more often.

John – :cool1:congrats on the San Antonio marathon. I read about the train delaying some people. I would have been very frustrated if that happened to me. Glad that you were still in the corrals at the time

Maria – glad that you have been able to return to a normal work schedule. :upsidedow I hope that your training for Jan is going well

Corinna – sorry that you have been back on the treadmill lately. I actually don’t mind it too much. I don’t feel comfortable going long distances outside alone. Mike is definitely not at the same pace as me so I hit the treadmill for anything over 5 miles. I like that the bathroom is close, I don’t have to carry a water bottle, gu, phone, etc, I catch up on TV shows and movies:thumbsup2…. lots of pluses for treadmill time.

Julie – Your April mother/daughter weekend sounds wonderful!:goodvibes I’m sure it will be a memory your daughter will never forget.

Richard – I love reading your race reports. Please don’t stop posting them. I sometimes am reading them weeks later, but I do enjoy them. Congrats on a great race and an awesome PR! I’m looking forward to hearing about your journey to 140.6!
How did the apartment hunting go? Your lake house sounds wonderful and that holiday caramel French toast sounds amazing!:cloud9:

JenB – How is your training going for Goofy? :goofy:Do you have a time goal for either race? I think mine will be just to finish and feel good. I’m starting to get nervous about the whole idea…what was I thinking when I signed up for Goofy? I need to start thinking more positively about the Jan weekend.

Lisa – I’m glad you enjoyed your time in Philly last weekend. Sorry you had tummy troubles:sad2: during the race but it sounds like you had a good race overall.

Hi to all those I missed this time…. I only read back a page or two…

AFM: I was able to meet up with some WISHers for a half marathon at Marshall University in WV a few weeks ago. :grouphug:My training schedule called for 16 miles that weekend so I decided that 13.1 with friends would be more fun than 16 miles on the TM. I enjoyed my time with the WISH team and had a successful race – decent chip time and no injuries. My flight home was cancelled but WISHers, Karen and John, came to my rescue and went a few hours out of their way to drive me home!!! :love:They truly are amazing people!

I’m trying to stick to my training schedule to prepare for Goofy but I haven’t been very consistent lately. I have completed all of my long runs/walks but have not gotten enough of the weekly ones accomplished. I really am going to try and focus on my weekly miles and cross training this week.

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Kathy

Kathy, that's the best attitude to have. Just view Saturday as a nice easy long run, and Sunday as more of the same. That's what worked so well for me last year. I ran both days about 1 or 1:30 slower per mile than I normally do, and it really helped me feel less tired and worn out after each run. An ice bath afterwards really helped too, even if that's pretty much what we were running in on Saturday. :lmao:

I don't really have to time for a proper post this morning, with all the back to work after a holiday weekend stuff....

However, I did want to get in a few comments:

I saw Tangled this weekend and loved it. I wonder if this movie might actually encourage purchases of cast iron skillets.

I spent much of yesterday online chatting with friends and "watching" results from Ironman Cozumel come in. Each of my 5 friends racing finished, though some were held back by injury and did not meet their goals, however others exceeded their goals. Al in all, I was thoroughly inspired by their efforts.

I made a late decision to run a local race. The Run the Woodlands series is sponsored by a local running store and runs twice a month with a $1 entry fee. I ran a solid and steady pace and finished in 27:05 beating my old PR of 30:20 from April 2009. This is easily my best short run since 1991.

OK, break time is over now so back to work for me.

Hello cousins!

Kathy - Good luck with your training. With the exception of the cancelled flight, the half in WV sounds like it was a fun way to fit in some training. :thumbsup2

Maria - I'm glad your conference was good. Erin got her ISEE scores, but of course, we don't really know where she'll get in. Her teachers said that "she'll have many choices," so I'm hoping that's a good sign. March seems so far away right now. :sad2:

John - I can't imagine a train going through a race! Sorry you weren't happy with the race, but your time was great! I'm only that fast when I drive.

Corinna - How's your weather? Has the snow melted or are you still remaining good friends with your treadmill? Thankfully, we haven't had any snow yet. (I really wish there was a knock on wood smilie that I could insert here.)

Richard - I'm jealous that you've seen Tangled. I really want to see it, but haven't had the opportunity yet. Oh, and a 140.6 mile race? All I can say to you is :worship::worship:.

Jen B - I'm so sorry to hear about your uncle. :grouphug:

Lisa - Congrats on your half. I'm sorry to hear about your stomach issues, but how great that you overcame those issues and finished the race! :cool1:

As for me, we have decided not to run the half marathon on the Cape at the end of Feb. Instead, we are going to do our own half marathon, so I still have something to motivate me. We just couldn't see spending money on a hotel room and a race that may not happen if we get a big snowstorm. So, Rob and I are still planning to run 13.1 miles together that day, but we'll do it locally and then go out to dinner that night to celebrate.

Have a great week everyone!

Julie: I like the idea of a self-imposed/organized half as a motivator. That is honestly why I sign up for so many races, to keep me accountable with training.

Lisa: Sorry we missed you in Philia. Great job getting through the race despite some adversity. We enjoyed the race, but I really started to feel the hills around the zoo and slowed down quite a bit. The weather was perfect and we enjoyed cheering on the marathon finishers as we headed back to our car.

Richard: Congrats on the PR :cool1: and save some caramel french toast for me, sounds yummy!

Kathy: Good to hear from you. Training for Goofy is going ok. We have so much to do between now and then that I'm having a bit of trouble focusing on my training but am working to get it done and really looking forward to a few days in WDW.

Thanks to everyone for the good wishes for my uncle. He has started chemo and we just need to wait and see it this thing responds or not-- it is a rare, aggressive stage IV cancer, so while we do not expect a miracle, we hope it can be kept under control.

I've been really busy (as have all of us). Made Thanksgiving dinner. My first ever turkey and it turned out pretty well. Kind of sick of leftovers at this point but it tasted good. Now gearing up for our friends wedding :bride: on the 11th. The whole family is involved. I'm the matron of honor (why does that make me feel old?), DD is the flowergirl, and DH is a groomsman. Plans for today include getting in my run and making centerpiece things for the wedding.

On the training front I am proud to say that my 20 miler this weekend actually went pretty well. I ran the whole thing with 3 min walk breaks every 5 miles to eat gu or chomps (can't do it while I run or I get queasy:sad2:) I managed to maintain an overall 12 min pace which is pretty good for me at that distance. Also watched a lot of episodes of Burn Notice in the process-- 4 hour TM runs are a strange thing. :happytv: Debating with myself if I should try to break 5 hours in the marathon this year or not put that kind of pressure on myself and just have fun. Decisions...

I hope everyone is doing well. Keep us posted :goodvibes

It's been so long since I've updated and said hi, but I guess I've avoided checking in with my cousins because I'm bummed that I haven't been able to train. I don't want to sign up for any races because I'm afraid I won't be able to do them. I was in a car accident the beginning of September - while it wasn't too bad it has me in physical therapy 3x a week for my neck and shoulder. It's been challenging getting back in the exercise groove, even though I'm now physically allowed to do so.

JenB & Lisa - congrats on the Philly race.

Richard - wow - awesome time! And it's really only $1? That's amazing.

Corinna - I'm over winter already. :P Had a bad fall on the ice the weekend before Thanksgiving. I'll be bound to indoor exercise for awhile! I hope you're well and surviving the TM. :)

Julie - I like your idea of your own half. You and Rob could make medals for each other. ;)

Thanks, everyone for the PR well-wishes!:lovestruc

Nicole - Yes, it is a no-frills $1 race. About all you get for your dollar is a gun-time record where every finisher is assigned a clipboard number in the finish order and then you tell the record-keeper your name when the race is done. The course is a big loop through a neighborhood and they put out cones and arrow signs at the turns.

Jen - I'd be happy to save you some caramel french toast whenever you'd like to come down. That is however a pretty long trip for breakfast.

Julie - Tangled was definitely worth seeing!

AFM - DD#2 Patricia is in process of moving out right now. A few mixed feelings here, but it is not tragic. She feels it is time to be more on her own and at 20 it is hard to argue too much. BTW, anyone care to guess how old I was when I moved out on my own? ;) On the plus side, I will be able to spend more time on the Wii with her at her own place!

Happy Birthday, Richard! :cool1::banana:party::bday::drinking1

If there was one celebration that was going to get me out of my lurking, too embarrassed to come out of the woodwork guilt complex, it's your birthday! :lmao:

Seriously, folks, I'm sorry. It's been that kind of year for me. (And DOOD. But it's really all about me, right?) Training has been off, noshing has not. We registered and then dumped two or three races. Yada yada.

Yesterday I did my measly 8 miles, while it was snowing, and was rewarded for my fortitude my one twisted ankle & shin splints. The post-run Maker's Mark did warm me up, however.

On the up side, I've truly enjoyed lurking and reading about so many of your successes! I'm looking forward to reading and interacting more over the next few weeks - as work schedules lighten - to motivate me. If not for training, then for making some ADRs for January. Or maybe just hanging out here. What do you think, cousins? Am I welcomed home?

Of course you are! Well, as long as you bring some of that Maker's Mark along with you. :)

:cheer2::cheer2:Happy Birthday, Richard!!!:cheer2::cheer2:

Corinna - I'm over winter already. :P Had a bad fall on the ice the weekend before Thanksgiving. I'll be bound to indoor exercise for awhile! I hope you're well and surviving the TM. :)

Oh man, Nicole - I'm so sorry about your fall! It's dangerous out there, for sure. I completely avoid running outside in the winter (except for the occasional race - not sure what sense that actually makes.) unless the sidewalks are clear and dry. Otherwise, it is too scary for me!

I'm not sure that 8 miles are actualy ever "measly" unless you are totally hardcore. Bummer about the twisted ankle and shin splints. Your recovery beverage sounds excellent however!

And of course we're always glad to see you here, facebook, WDW!

Interesting you mention ADR's for January - I don't like to be too tied down, BUT I was thinking I really want to go to the Brown Derby and get that noodle bowl in January. Anybody else interested in a cobb salad or grapefruit cake on this trip?

AFM: Last week my life got hijacked by tech week for a show I wasn't really working on until last Monday. I ended up missing ALL of my runs and only made it to one of my XT classes, partly because of the nature of the work I was doing. They needed a checkerboard floor and I ended up being the one to do it. Thank goodness. It ended up looking great, but all the masking tape and measuring and I think I did the equivalent of about a gazillion squats over 2 days. I was TIRED. For those who were not subjected to it on Facebook already, here is part of the fruit of my labor:

IMG_5250.jpg

I did get a short TM run last night. It is amazing how quickly you lose that cardio edge. Hopefully it comes back quickly now that I'm back in "the zone." I'm really grooving on the 2x per week Bodypump, too - I think that is the reason that I had fatigue but not much in the way of pain or soreness after those two long days of floor-painting.

There was also a good 8" of snow to shovel on Saturday - good times. I am doing my best to keep the glacier at bay from the start, and my neighbor and I are both taking care to keep the storm drains clear this year as well.

One last thing: I am finally back to my "fighting weight" after the summer of indulgence. Nothing like the holidays to get me serious about weight loss again! Very mysterious, I know! Just in time for Weight Watchers to throw me a curve ball with their new plan. So far, it is OK, though.

OH! And I am planning on doing the Jingle Bell Run this Saturday - this is the famous -2º race from a few years back. Last year, the roads were covered in snow. My friend who always runs it had stomach flu last week and is still feeling a little weak, so I don't know if he'll be running or not. And I haven't dared look at the weather predictions yet.

Any Red Dwarf fans in the house?

Debra - Thank you for the warm wishes . No need for you to feel guilty among family, you will always be welcome among your Ohana cousins. However, I will say I also ran 8 miles this past weekend (aka one loop of the Ironman Texas course) and I hardly considered them "measly".

Corinna - Thanks for the well wishes, also . Brown Derby and the Grapefruit Cake are on my "must do list", unfortunately I will not be there to share it with you this trip. Good luck on the Jingle Bell Run, I'll be wishing you an ice-free race. Darcy and I are big Red Dwarf fans here, we were discussing the show's theme song last weekend :rotfl:)

Thanks to all of you here and on Facebook for all the birthday wishes, it is really nice to see how many people care every now and then.

Happy Birthday Richard!
Hi cousins. Winter is dragging me down a tiny bit. I have been mentally struggling with the runs and have just about given up on running outside until it warms up. We got 5k in outside on thanksgiving, but I've been on the treadmill since then. I knew all summer in the nasty heat that this day would be coming, so I saved all my complaining for the cold!:lmao: The high today is 25, well below normal for us.

On the positive front, my stomach hasn't been too bad. Just some nausea after long runs, but I can handle that if the other issues are in check. The nausea is strange, though. Saturday I did 9 miles and felt great at the end of the run, and about an hour after felt really queasy for a couple of hours. Anyhow, still better than the other stuff that was going on.

Hope everyone is doing well. I'm planning on being a more active cousin. I need to hear about everyone's accomplishments to get me through the winter!:goodvibes

Boo!

Happy Birthday Uncle Walt and Richard!

my semester is kinda winding down. only 47 more 3rd year papers to grade, then 46 2nd year papers, then the final and we're done! We're trying to resurrect the school's drug info center, so things are busy, busy.

I'm not running...self-diagnosed stress fracture...so this weekend's half is a no go. That blows the 6 in 6 months streak. But my foot is fussy, my niece is coming to visit this weekend and my ex is running the race, so probably for the best. I also have this vicious laryngitis thing that just won't quit.

Anyway, just wanted to ask if anyone's up for an Ohana mini-meet during marathon weekend? Sounds like Brown Derby has some possibilities...or that crazy pastry shop next door. Have you guys seen the cupcakes in that place?

A Ohana meet sounds like a great idea! I'm running Goofy again, so I'm not sure what my availability will be over the weekend, but I'll definitely be at the expo on Thursday and the parks on Monday.

John: I have to share my Maker's Mark? But, but... my precious. :lmao: Okay, since it's with you all, I can be talked into it. Are you taking advantage of the Marathon Monday -medal deal?

Nicole: So sorry to hear about your fall. And before Thanksgiving is way too early for weather-related incidents. I took a tumble this weekend but hurt my pride mostly. (Why do I always fall in front of the young, fit athletes?) But then again, I've been known to twist my ankle on wet leaves, so I'm not a particularly coordinated runner.

I didn't know you were in a car accident - or I did, and forgot. (Sorry, losing track is part of that kind of year for me.) Scary, scary stuff. I hope you're truly okay & not downplaying it. Hugs!

Corinna: I saw your artistic, checkerboard masterpieces on FB. You truly are such an asset to the theater group, talented, organized and STRONG. The floor was definitely a lunge workout. I don't envy you in the slightest. That said, any time you want to decorate my home - come on over! Or shovel. I'm not picky.

Congrats on getting back to your fighting weight. Love your determination & ability to stick to a goal. (Can't say the same for me. So I won't say anything.) You have to promise to take pics of the Jingle Bell run - they're some of my favorites.

And you know I'm a Red Dwarf fan.

Richard: I can't believe I keep forgetting you won't be at WDW in January. Wahhhh!

Rose: Oh, it sounds like it's been a lot of challenging runs/health for you. (I've yet to read the back pages and catch up). Kudos to you for getting through the 9 miles and ESPECIALLY the after-effects. Ugh. I hope that's not a regular occurrence for you.

Mel: You are in one of Dante's circles, aren't you, with all the grading. Yeah, I don't envy you one bit. I'd read on FB that you needed to pull back on your 6 in 6 half due to your foot. A real bummer. But I know you'll be reasonable. Well 5 in 5 reasonable - if that counts.

Yes, I'm up for a meet. I finally go around to booking airfare. Still haven't made ADRs or any planning, really.

As for me: Today was XT. Tomorrow a run, assuming my shin cooperates. I'd made some scheduling errors with my training to accommodate DOOD's schedule & realized, too late, that it didn't work for me. Too late being exacerbating some old injuries. But nothing that will stop me from making it to the start line.

In other news, let's see.... "The Walking Dead" anyone?

Of course you are! Well, as long as you bring some of that Maker's Mark along with you. :)

Oh hey, good news! I just remembered that I have a nearly full bottle of Maker's in my Owner's Locker. It's not the new '46 variety, but it should do the job. Either you guys can come visit me at AKL OR I'll bring my "Why yes, I AM That Kind of Girl" flask along. And yeah, it really does say that. Even though we all know I'm really NOT that kind of girl. Unless it just means the kind of girl who might have a flask of bourbon in her bag. And then I might sometimes be that kind of girl.

OK, I did NOT need to know what those cupcakes look like. Now I know: They look Dangerous!

Also, I think it sounds like the universe is sending you a message not to race this weekend!! Good that you are heeding the warnings. Are you going to be OK by January? Hope it's feeling better soon.

I am definitely up for a meet (or two, or five) in January. I'm planning for the big one on Friday night, followed by the highly desirable POP Marathon Special meal. If it's not broken, don't fix it, I say. Followed by soft serve ice cream....somewhere. Probably either Epcot or Boardwalk, depending on who (if anyone) wants to join me and what their part ticket status is.

Last year, we did the Saturday afternoon at Beaches & Cream's adjacent closed wine-bar. Does that appeal? Would a different location and/or time be more desirable? I believe the bar at Animal Kingdom Lodge is always open. And they have that fireplace/living-room area. No Dole-whips, though. Polynesian was a good meeting place at the Princess last year.

Does anyone have any interest in a Boma meal this weekend? I feel like I should eat there at least once since I'll be staying in the neighborhood.

I am planning on Jellyrolls at least one night. And I'm thinking I'd rather pay lunch prices for my noodle bowl than dinner prices.

I'm heading for home on Monday after the Boardwalk Bakery meet-up.

That's my entire thought process so far!

Corinna: I saw your artistic, checkerboard masterpieces on FB. You truly are such an asset to the theater group, talented, organized and STRONG. The floor was definitely a lunge workout. And you know I'm a Red Dwarf fan.

Debra and Richard:

I know it is probably completely inapropriate (I realize it every day) but we have a Red Dwarf disk in the car's DVD player, so on the way to school, I'm having to explain what a Smeg-Head is, for instance. My kids are very, very amused by the cat, though. There's some brilliance to that show, I tell you. It looked better and better every season, but I'm not sure the writing is ever as good as it was in that first season.

Thank you for your kind comments about my scenic work. Not to be immodest, but I think you forgot a few of my finer qualities that benefit the theater group - I'm available and free. ;) I must admit, I'm not much for decorating in the home...at all, but I appreciate your faith in my abilities! What I think I really excel at is this sort of crazy last-minute problem solving that always happens. And also masking tape. I am good with the tape. :)

As for YOUR determination to stick to a goal, I think you always look great - you never let things get as far out of hand as I have had a tendency to do.

Oh man - not an injury exacerbation!!! I hope it feels better soon - glad it's not too serious.

AFM: What do you call it if you miss your long run (8 whole miles) on Sunday and have a cut-back week scheduled for the week after you miss every single run because of life taking over and so you decide to do sprints for the first 5 miles and then add 3 easy miles on after so you get both sprints and long run in one crazy workout? I have to say, I am feeling pretty pleased with my "intervals" today, though. I did 3x .75miles @8.34 m/mfollowed by 2x .25 miles at 7:30 m/m. Which is all very fast for me! It was all I could do to finish those shorter, faster intervals, I have to admit.

I am not sure if I'll be able to take photos on Saturday - it is COLD to be running with a chunk of metal in my hand. Though if I have a handwarmer, it could be potentially tolerable, I guess? :confused3 The only reason I have that frosty eyelash photo is that my friend's friend's husband was there that day, not running, so he took some photos. That couple won't be there this year, unfortunately. And my own scream team has other obligations that morning, too - Lego competition!!! I hope the deep freeze holds off until Sunday, but that is just me. :-)

In my continuing efforts to actually post where I'm subscribed (with varying degrees of success, I will admit )

:bday: Richard! -- I hope it was awesometastic!

Corinna -- The "type of girl" you are is one of a kind! Whatever works for you is working, so enjoy your surreptitious sips -- just don't forget to include me when you plan the inevitable drinking round the monorail tour :rotfl:

Debra -- Sadly, we don't get "The Walking Dead" channel -- but we have become devotees of "Boardwalk Empire". It's not sci fi, but it is addictive! :rotfl: I also finally found "The Big Bang Theory". Yes, I know I am way behind. They moved to Thursday nights, and suddenly I could watch. I admit, I want to go back and see the episodes when Leonard and Penny were together, just to enjoy Sheldon's comments :rotfl2:

John, Mel, and other Jan. folk -- We arrive Thursday and leave Tuesday. We plan to do the Pop meet Friday, then I'm racing Saturday and Dennis is racing Sunday. I might be found in the Parks Sunday :flower3: -- Monday is up in the air until we see how Dennis tolerates his first Full. Our only ADR (which I have yet to make...) should be Monday night at Artist's Point. I'm not sure when we could fit Boma in -- either Thursday or Sunday night? I will also admit, our schedule is subject to change based on whether and when the Patriots are in the Playoffs :cheer2: Assuming I don't collapse too much Saturday morning, Sat. afternoon sounds good for an Ohana meet! :stitch:

:wave2: to Julie, Jen, JenB, Nicole, Rose, Lisa! -- it would seem I have to stop DISing and start working :headache:

Maria :upsidedow

Corinna -- The "type of girl" you are is one of a kind! Whatever works for you is working, so enjoy your surreptitious sips -- just don't forget to include me when you plan the inevitable drinking round the monorail tour

She's also "available and free." Couple that with her flask of bourbon, and she's my kind of girl. And what's this drinking round the monorail tour? That sounds like perfect rehydration after the marathon to me. :)

I'd be up for an Ohana meet on Saturday afternoon if that's what works best for everyone else. After my post-half nap, of course. And Debra, if you want to meet up during Marathon Monday too, that'd be great. Not sure which park I'll use my free medal entry on. I'm torn between the best rides at Hollywood Studios and the best bars at Epcot. Decisions, decisions....
