Happy 4th of July!
I started mine off with the same 10 mile race I ran last year. I looked at my mini-write up from last year and saw that it was actually 20 degrees warmer this year (can you hear me saying "UGhhhhhh" over the computer?) Of course last year was in the 50's. This year, 70's and humid, so it could have been worse, I guess.
Anyway, I started out pretty well, then ended up running with a woman who was going a little too fast, but she was chatty and it was fun to talk with her, so I stuck with her longer than I should have. Finally, I sensibly slowed down. By about mile 8, I was feeling pretty ragged- my training for this has been...marginal, and I had a weird sort of chilly feeling when I would have expected to feel warm. A woman I'd met a few times caught up with me and we ran the rest of the way together - she hadn't been sure she'd be able to finish, but she did great. Kept me from slowing down more than once (she would probably say the same) and at the end, when I saw the clock and it said 1:39:30, I took off hoping to sneak in under 1:40. I did it, but I am not sure of the exact numbers as I was beyond all sensibility at that point. I might have heaved a few times even, though thankfully that was the extent of it. I've never had it get to that point before.
Here's what I wrote about my finish last year:
I finished at 1:45:50....I think. Just under 1:46. So much faster than my "under 2 hours" goal!
How things have changed - I am amazed to have gotten a PR today and by about 5 minutes!

I thought I was done with that kind of thing for the year...
The rest of the day includes watching a parade and firework over the water tonight.

Except I'm not that big a fan of parades and fireworks. But my dear younger son is riding his bike in the parade (decorated by yours truly late last night when I should have been resting) so that will be very fun.
I need to go throw together some lunch/snack stuff, but so my shout outs sadly will not be extensive.
Maria - I hope your eye recovery goes well and quickly. I hope you'll enjoy some cross training and rest, too.
Jen - Yikes, your tooth situation sounds very frustrating. I hope you feel better soon as well.
Rose - Hope you had fun at your race! I am not a great swimmer at all - if it were an actual tri that i was doing, I'm sure i'd be very humiliated by my lack of technique. As it is this sort of progressive-do-it-yourself format, I am managing, mostly.
Nicole - Good luck and have a safe trip! Let me know if you want to do another local race - there are some fun ones in the fall, I believe. I am thinking I'll do something Twin Cities Marathon weekend - either the 10 mile if I get in with the lottery or the 10K the day before and volunteer at the Marathon.
As for kids, we're in the group where the first one lulled us into a false sense of security and feeling like we kinda knew what we were doing. Now the second one is disabusing us of that notion and whipping us into shape.
Yes, that is us as well, and possibly the real reason for our not venturing a third, but don't tell my youngest that - he's gotten much easier to live with in the past year or two, thank goodness!
Sorry your Tri-training hasn't been going more smoothly - scheduling all these different things can be a big challenge, especially with so many other schedules to juggle. Including SHARKS! My word!
Julie - so glad your DS's surgery went well. I hope he feels all better very soon. When your little one needs you that much, a lot of other things in life get put on hold, for sure - hopefully you'll be able to get back into your regular routine again soon. Give him an extra hug from Team Ohana!
And as for New England-speak....I moved to Massachusetts from Nebraska when I was in 3rd grade and my teachers all had the thickest accents - oh my gosh. But my brother's preschool teacher had the thickest of all. And they had a pet guinea pig in the classroom. My brother came home and said "Her name is Moth!" We thought: What a strange and creative name for a guinea pig! Turns out....the pig's name was actually:
Martha.
Man, I love that New England accent. I'm afraid it's disappearing, though. The younger generations don't seem to have it as much.
All right - I'd better wrap this up. Have a great day, team! I think the

is cute as well and I going to try to include it more often.
