Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

I'm going with the no kids = more trips to both Disneyworld and adult Disneyworld (otherwise known as Las Vegas :))

I think your group has the greatest chance of retaining sanity! I know Debra is with you.

I bet Julie and Jen are in the "two turned out so great, one more would be perfect" group!

And I could be wrong, but I think Jeanne has us all beat -- "four = four weddings and cruises to recover! group"

Maria :upsidedow

Thanks for the warm welcome!:goodvibes

Debra--$55 sounds like a great deal!

John—hope the puppies pads are doing better.

Corinna—the triathlon sounds fun—but I am a really terrible swimmer. I think I’d have to take swim lessons first. And as for low carb—I did South Beach a couple of years ago and ended up on antidepressants. I don’t know for a fact that it was the low carb, but I’m not convinced it wasn’t.

Richard--$600, oh my!

Hi Maria. :wave2:I missed you when I listed the people I recognized.

Jackie—my DS would definitely pick Disney over a sibling. And he would agree with the perfection comment too!:thumbsup2

I took my first run in my new shoes yesterday. I wanted to post last night but we had a power outage from 8-12. Luckily it wasn't too hot. We just finished the hottest June on record here. So far the shoes seem to be doing the trick. My arch is a little tender, but they said that is really common with inserts. Today I did the elliptical and that's it until our race on Saturday. We are running the Bluegrass 10k Saturday morning. It will be my first 10k. I'm really excited.:cool1:

Hope everyone has a great evening!

Welcome Rose!

Richard: You look great in the tri pictures. Congrats on your success. You really make me want to be a better swimmer so I can try a small local event.

Corinna: I love the idea of competitive wt loss. It cracks me up what can be motivating sometimes.

Jackie: Hope you are feeling better soon.

John: I hope the puppies feel better. Tragically, I recall a summer I was happy my dog cut her paw: She started to limp and was fairly recently recovered from knee surgery. We were so worried her knee was bad again that when we saw the small gash on her paw we were actually really relieved.

Debra: Good to hear from you. Sorry things have been crazy for you but at least there is a Disney trip in the works-- always a good thing.

It's been a bit rough around here lately. I had my tooth extraction on the 19th and it didn't go very well. Turns out the root had fused with my bone so they had to remove a section of bone along with the tooth in order to get it out. :scared1: Let's just say not fun. I got a bone graft and a bunch of sutures and am hoping for the best. I went for my follow up yesterday and finally got the stitches out and the green light to eat food with texture (but still no nuts, seeds or whole grains). It's iffy weather or not I can get an implant in the future- even with the graft there is a good sized chunk of bone missing where the implant would need to be. The dentist listed a bunch of painful sounding things I could do to make it work, but at this point I'm not sure what I want. I'm struggling to get over my grouchiness over the whole thing and the thoughts that I should have left well enough alone and not touched a tooth that wasn't hurting or bothering me :confused3

On the plus side for me I've gotten back into the exercise groove and have a 5K this weekend locally. Disney trip for us in just over a week then seriously training for the DL Half. The tooth thing was also good for about 2 lbs of wt loss. When all you can eat is mush you sort of don't bother as much. I'm now up to a total of 25 lbs wt loss with about 15 more to go. The exciting thing was I was actually able to fit into (and look good in ) a dress I bought just before we got married about 15 years ago :cool1:

I'm not sure how the pawprint got in my last post-- I typed the word "paw" and the little picture appeared in my post. Interesting...

I only about swam well enough to not drown when I started tri's. Now I am up to the better side of average. There lots of varied abilities at every tri--last week there were some walking half the pool swim!

...and I thought the paw: was cute!

never thought of walking a swim portion

I thought it was cute too I was just surprised by its presence.

It's amazing what a stray colon can do :wizard:

I'm not touching that with a ten foot pole...:rolleyes1

Cousins, I am on the injured disabled list right now. I finally made myself go to my physician because my eyes have been bothering me, and I've irritated my eyelids, so no contacts for a week. This means no running for a week. I've been thinking of things I can do -- exercise bike, walking, weights, yoga -- all in all it may not be too bad, and I will definitely be well-rested and ready to run next Thursday!

I am very grateful it isn't something more serious, and I honestly was putting it off because I knew what was coming.

I have an intern this summer, who's just getting started. She is cute as a button, next year she'll be a senior at Boston University. Anyway, she's from Waco, TX, and we are really enjoying her speech. She peppers many phrases with "Y'all", and that makes us smile every time she says it. I'm sure she laughs every time someone up here uses "wicked" as an adjective! :goodvibes

Everyone have a great day, I hope you have lots of fun stuff coming up this weekend!

Funny, I thought the exact same thing!

You mean "Y'all" isn't common speech? Bless your hearts!

DH took us to visit his Boston cousins a few years back. We'd been there about half an hour when they left the room for a couple of minutes, and I looked at him and said "I haven't understood a word they've said." :rotfl: After a while they started to make sense, but you would have sworn we were foreigners when we first met! A few months later they were here and we took them to a very local Southern restaurant, and the waitress said the same thing to them. We had to interpret so they could order. Go figure!

I had the same thing! My FIL is from NH, and I couldn't understand a word he said the first time I spoke to him on the phone. When dh's family came to St. Louis for our wedding, they learned about all kinds of new foods -- biscuits and gravy were a big favorite, along with sweet tea, frozen custard, and St. Louis ribs. Regular coffee was also an eye opener. Regular coffee in St. Louis is black, up here it has additional ingredients.

By the way, I do know what "Bless Your Heart" really means...my parents were from Southeastern Missouri, and my relatives use that phrase ;) Of course, they often say "bless his little heart", which is of course even more meaningful :rotfl:

Hi Cousins!

Just popping in to say a quick hi. DS and I came home from the hospital this morning. His surgery went well - thank goodness. I haven't been running this week, and I'm not sure what the rest of the week holds for me (DS is super clingy and only wanting mommy), but I hope to be back at it soon.

Have a happy 4th of July!

Hey Julie!

I am so glad to hear ds's surgey went well, I was thinking of you yesterday . Enjoy those super clingy Mommy times. When I got home from work yesterday ds was home after a week away and I went to the backyard where he was to say hello. He was entertaining one of the neighbor girls, and he barely waved at me :rolleyes1 He did come in a few minutes later and give me a big hug, but it was still a little sad for me :sad1: Let him cling all he wants :goodvibes

Dennis plans to do the BAA Half this year -- will you guys be there?

Maria :upsidedow

Obviously, I don't know how much bone you're missing, but I had bone grafts at the sites of both of my implants. I've had them about 15 years with no problems so there's hope. Congrats on the weight loss!

Welcome Rose!!!

Maria...sorry to hear POR will be refurbing on marathon weekend. We haven't made ressies yet. Wow, having irritated eyes must drive you crazy.

Jackie, Jeanne...tell me everything about Raleigh-Durham. We're seriously thinking about moving. Biggest disadvantage...much farther from WDW. No more daytrips.

Julie...glad the surgery went well!

Richard...congrats on your tri! That's fabulous!

Corinna...can't wait to hear how your tri goes!

The tri thing for me is not working out. I haven't been able to fit in the swim workouts. I run 3 days, long bike on Sun. DD7 has swim lessons at the Y on M and W which seems like a natural time to swim, but the pools are closed for swim team practice. I can't get near the water 'cuz it's full of Sharks ;)

As for kids, we're in the group where the first one lulled us into a false sense of security and feeling like we kinda knew what we were doing. Now the second one is disabusing us of that notion and whipping us into shape.:thumbsup2

Mel - Everyone I know whose first child was a dream had a second child who seriously made them question why they did it again. Confirms my decision to stay with the only child.

As for the area, I've been here for 26 years. (Yikes - really?) You definitely give up the day trips, but whenever we've questioned whether we'd like to live closer we've always been afraid it would lose some of the magic if we could go any time we wanted. It's a 9 hour drive from our house to the gate, so we rarely fly anymore - too many regulations now and too many fees.

Climate-wise, obviously still hot and humid, maybe a LITTLE less than there. And we do have winter. We're 2 hours from the beach, 4 from the mountains. You probably already know we're a huge medical center. I think there are lots of cultural opportunities - someone from a really big city wouldn't think so, but for our size, we do really well. Schools are decent, at least in Wake County, although we have a new school board who are trying to shake things up.

And we have a HUGE running community. And apparently a pretty decent sized tri community too, based on how many events I see scheduled. Fabulous greenway system, so lots of places to run.

If you have specific questions as you get more serious, either PM me or message me on FB and I'll be glad to help!

Julie - Glad the surgery went well. Enjoy the clingy time!

Maria - Sweet tea. :thumbsup2

Jackie

Richard - Congrats on your tri! Amazing time!

Nicole: OOOOH, your DL visit sounds wonderful, esp. the Blue Sky Cellar. And the Henson Studios – I would be in absolute heaven (though I think JenB would give me a run for my money on this one.) Sorry to hear WoC wasn't quite the magical experience. :sad2: How often are you in LA?
.....
I did have to replace the iPod, which still annoys me. My running has been spotty & I'm embarrassed to say that I don't have any races on the horizon. Neither does DOOD, for the first time since he started. Things are a little strange here, and we're both missing motivation for trip planning etc. as we're sidetracked by various professional, career concerns. More on that later.

On the up side. I have booked a trip to WDW that overlaps with Wine & Dine. I'll be there, writing about the Food & Wine Festival, so I'm not planning on running the half. I don't think I could do the night race & still function for work. I'm thinking about squeezing in the 5K and/or volunteering for the race, though.

The good news about the trip? I'll be there for 8 days, and took advantage of a PIN code. The bad news? I'm staying at ASMu. I know, I know, I swore I wouldn't do Value again. But it's like $55/night. I don't know if/how long DOOD might be there; if so, it would be just for the weekend.

Now, if I could just find a way to get Disney to pay for all my expenses....I need to be a much bigger fish in their pond first.
To answer your question, I'm in LA completely randomly. It just depends on how many projects/shows I'm managing. I was there 4 times last year and 2 so far this year.

I also don't have any races on the horizon.

Very cool that you'll be there for Food & Wine - hopefully AsMu isn't so bad. I've heard it has the best food court of the three All Stars (small perks, right?).

My Ongoing Triathlon Progress: I managed a longer swim, two bike rides and one run last week. Hrm. Good progress for the lazyman, maybe not quite enough running for the 10 mile next weekend.

Here's what I've got left:
Swim: .4 miles
Bike: 66 miles
Run: Complete

I do feel like I've lagged a bit with the biking, but to be fair, there were a couple weeks there that I just didn't really have bike access. I feel like now I'm really cooking with it and I should be able to get through them in the next 2 weeks without too much trouble. Especially if the weather would just darned well cooperate, for pete's sake. We've had enough rain, already!!!

And food-wise? I thought I'd have a rougher time this summer, but I always forget how much more active I can be in the summer, too. Plus also, my FIL has announced he is on a low-carb diet (supposed to stay under 100g carbs per day) and has lost 25 pounds since October. I tell you, it's like someone threw down a gauntlet. I can not be out-nutrition/fitnessed by my FIL, so I've been doing pretty well being sensible/smart/strong in the eating department as well. Though if I were under to even try to stay under 100g of carbs per day, I don't think I'd function well at all. I'll just keep counting my silly points. My weight is back down to pre-school-closing/springtime mayhem levels.:cheer2:

I'd better get to bed - more craziness tomorrow, I'm sure.

Have a great night, morning, afternoon, etc. Cousins!
Glad you're doing well with the Tri and better with your eating. Congrats on getting your weight back down. :woohoo:

DH and I also have only one child - DD19. He wanted 5, I thought maybe 2, but somehow life got in the way... when she asked for a sibling we told her she could have a brother or sister or more Disney trips, and she decided more Disney trips were much more fun! :rotfl: I also loved China Beach when it was on - I still love Dana Delaney in anything just because I loved her character!

I'm currently on the "injured" list. Have some as-yet-to-be-diagnosed hip/IT injury that's been getting progressively worse for the past couple of weeks. I finally decided it was time to stop running and go to the doctor, so I have an appt on Thursday.

Jackie
Jackie - we're in the same child situation. Well, DD is only 3 (this month), but we're sticking with one! We've thought the same thing about vacations. All our family lives 1000 miles away and we LOVE to travel - so much easier with one. ;)
I'm sorry to hear about your injury. I've had the same one recently, but am kinda anti-scheduling doctor appts, so I'm in the DIY camp. (It's not severe, just annoying.) Let me know if you find out any good treatment options. :goodvibes

Ouch, Jen! I'm sorry about your tooth - you're entitled to be grouchy. I'm impressed that you have a race soon after your extraction. Good luck this weekend!

Glad to hear his surgery went well. Hope he feels better soon!

As for me, I'm off to visit family in NJ for an extra long weekend. We'll be celebrating DD's 3rd birthday on Saturday. I've been getting in walks or walk/runs nearly every day. I have been doing zero cross training or strength training lately, but the weather is just too nice in the evenings - I just want to get outside. To keep my knee/hip irritation at bay, I've been doing the Walk/Run half marathon training from the Marathoning for Mortals book with no issues. So I'll stick there for distance and work on increasing my run time again, as possible.

Have a great weekend, cousins!

I hope things improve with the tooth situation. I so do not enjoy the dentist. Yeah on the 25 pounds!:cool1:
never thought of walking a swim portion

.
That never occurred to me either. It seems like it would be really slow, but maybe not for me, because I am a really poor swimmer.;)

Hope DS is doing well. I miss the clingy days. My almost 19 yo will only put up with me hugging on him for a very short period of time. He was the most affectionate kid. He had an imaginary friend who "made the hugs and kisses." It was so sweet.

Have a safe trip!

I'm working on everyone's names, but don't have them all down yet.

DH and I drove to Lexington tonight to pick up our race packets. We have everything ready for tomorrow and are getting up at 4:45. I'm a little stressed about the parking situation, but hopefully we will get there early enough that it will be a non-issue. We should be there by 6:20 or so. I hate having to leave so early, but it's an hour drive. I was nervous this morning, but things were so crazy at work, I forgot about being nervous! Mostly this evening I just really wanted an end of the week beer, but I'm waiting until tomorrow. I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Happy 4th of July!

I started mine off with the same 10 mile race I ran last year. I looked at my mini-write up from last year and saw that it was actually 20 degrees warmer this year (can you hear me saying "UGhhhhhh" over the computer?) Of course last year was in the 50's. This year, 70's and humid, so it could have been worse, I guess.

Anyway, I started out pretty well, then ended up running with a woman who was going a little too fast, but she was chatty and it was fun to talk with her, so I stuck with her longer than I should have. Finally, I sensibly slowed down. By about mile 8, I was feeling pretty ragged- my training for this has been...marginal, and I had a weird sort of chilly feeling when I would have expected to feel warm. A woman I'd met a few times caught up with me and we ran the rest of the way together - she hadn't been sure she'd be able to finish, but she did great. Kept me from slowing down more than once (she would probably say the same) and at the end, when I saw the clock and it said 1:39:30, I took off hoping to sneak in under 1:40. I did it, but I am not sure of the exact numbers as I was beyond all sensibility at that point. I might have heaved a few times even, though thankfully that was the extent of it. I've never had it get to that point before.

Here's what I wrote about my finish last year:

I finished at 1:45:50....I think. Just under 1:46. So much faster than my "under 2 hours" goal!

How things have changed - I am amazed to have gotten a PR today and by about 5 minutes! :faint: I thought I was done with that kind of thing for the year...

The rest of the day includes watching a parade and firework over the water tonight. :cloud9: Except I'm not that big a fan of parades and fireworks. But my dear younger son is riding his bike in the parade (decorated by yours truly late last night when I should have been resting) so that will be very fun.

I need to go throw together some lunch/snack stuff, but so my shout outs sadly will not be extensive. :(

Maria - I hope your eye recovery goes well and quickly. I hope you'll enjoy some cross training and rest, too.

Jen - Yikes, your tooth situation sounds very frustrating. I hope you feel better soon as well.

Rose - Hope you had fun at your race! I am not a great swimmer at all - if it were an actual tri that i was doing, I'm sure i'd be very humiliated by my lack of technique. As it is this sort of progressive-do-it-yourself format, I am managing, mostly.

Nicole - Good luck and have a safe trip! Let me know if you want to do another local race - there are some fun ones in the fall, I believe. I am thinking I'll do something Twin Cities Marathon weekend - either the 10 mile if I get in with the lottery or the 10K the day before and volunteer at the Marathon.

As for kids, we're in the group where the first one lulled us into a false sense of security and feeling like we kinda knew what we were doing. Now the second one is disabusing us of that notion and whipping us into shape.:thumbsup2

Yes, that is us as well, and possibly the real reason for our not venturing a third, but don't tell my youngest that - he's gotten much easier to live with in the past year or two, thank goodness!

Sorry your Tri-training hasn't been going more smoothly - scheduling all these different things can be a big challenge, especially with so many other schedules to juggle. Including SHARKS! My word!

Julie - so glad your DS's surgery went well. I hope he feels all better very soon. When your little one needs you that much, a lot of other things in life get put on hold, for sure - hopefully you'll be able to get back into your regular routine again soon. Give him an extra hug from Team Ohana!

And as for New England-speak....I moved to Massachusetts from Nebraska when I was in 3rd grade and my teachers all had the thickest accents - oh my gosh. But my brother's preschool teacher had the thickest of all. And they had a pet guinea pig in the classroom. My brother came home and said "Her name is Moth!" We thought: What a strange and creative name for a guinea pig! Turns out....the pig's name was actually:

Martha.

:lmao:

Man, I love that New England accent. I'm afraid it's disappearing, though. The younger generations don't seem to have it as much.

All right - I'd better wrap this up. Have a great day, team! I think the paw: is cute as well and I going to try to include it more often.

Happy Independence Day!!! :beach:

Corinna - Great job on the Ten miler! It sounds like you definitely gave everything you had; I always get more impressed by watching people finish hard at the end of any race who gave max effort, especially the staggering and heaving runners/triathletes who you know gave every bit of effort possible.

Since I am short on time right now....

paw:paw:paw: to everyone!!!!
