Team 'Ohana--No One Left Behind: The Continuing Adventures

I have never been hit in the head with a rock (that I recall) but I did take a softball in the eye when I was 8. That was purty!

I have to go home on Sunday of Princess weekend, but would gladly meet for soft serve on Saturday. I plan to pop into the meet at Riverside, but the Princess thread has been a hard group to integrate into.

I have plans to be sporting leopard for the Princess half.
I took a softball in the nose! But like you, no rocks.
I haven't posted anything in the Princess thread but started reading it a week or so ago. Do you know what the Riverside meet entails? I've never been to a WISH meet at all. So is it like an hour of mingling around?
I love that you've be sporting the leopard!

Here's another thought: It would be so awesome to have an Ohana meet at the Poly - maybe brunch or lunch at Ohana or Kona on Saturday would work. Kind of more expensive than we'd usually plan for a meet, though. We could also meet at the food court for dole whips and take our picture with the Ohana sign. :)
Great idea to think of a theme for our Ohana meet. I'd be up for any of the options. (No help in decisiveness - one of my deficiencies). I'd like to have my Saturday morning available, but a late brunch, or a lunch or snack should be good. :thumbsup2

Nicole:welcome: I hope you can work out your schedule to do the Princess! I’m going solo too – so I’d definitely love to meet up!

Princess Marathon Runners I too would love to meet up with everyone on Princess weekend. It's a solo trip for me - don't have any plans yet - I arrive Friday and leave early Monday. Where is everyone staying? I'm at ASMu.
Thanks for the welcome!
If I can come (looking more likely - yay!) I'll be doing Friday to Monday also, likely staying at AS Sports. I'm looking forward to being solo, but I'll probably feel a teeny bit awkward/lonely at meals. That's the way I am on business trips anyway.

Kathy: There is a Disney version of Apples to Apples ?!? We need to own that!

I am hoping to do the local 5K-- we'll see what the roads look like-- I refuse to run on ice, cold I can handle but not ice. We are in the path of the next one and predicted to get 1-2 feet of snow :scared1:

I will be down for Princess weekend with Butch and DD6. We are staying at ASSports. DD is going to try the Mickey mile on Friday.
I'm excited to hear about this Disney Apples to Apples, too! I'll have to look for that.
My folks live in Jersey, so I've been hearing a lot about your storms! Hope you can do your 5k!

What do you guys think of the Expo? Worth planning time walking around? Do buses run from race resorts every 20 minutes or so? I couldn't find any info on specifics (apologies if I'm just dense).

Went to a local running store tonight. I found a small one that is just 15 min from my house. I wanted to find some socks and maybe some shorts. Until now I've been running in a tech shirt, yoga pants and whatever socks I happen to be wearing that day. Can you say sweaty mess? With my possible half coming up in a few weeks, I thought it was time to get some basic attire. They had really limited inventory - just opened a few months ago - but I was able to get socks and my first pair of running shorts. Still need to make it to the big running store this weekend to get fit for my next pair of shoes.

oops-- I have ressies for Ohana on Sunday for a late brunch post race. I'd be up for whatever though

Thanks for the scoop on Disney Apples to Apples.

WISH meets are usually just a social hang out sort of thing. A group photo usually occurs but that is about it for the structure. Some people stay for dinner after-- the Riverside food court has a great make your own pasta bar.

Good morning! Snow Day here. My son is home (hopefully he will go out and make a bit of $$ shoveling for the neighbors), Mark is still home recuperating. I was able to do what I needed to do for work by phone. I am supposed to take Mark to the doctor to see if he is cleared to return to work and driving. However, looks like his appointment will be cancelled.

I was able to get in my 50 minute strength workout and 60 minutes on the TM yesterday. I feel that my training is finally back on track. :goodvibes All this Princess talk has me wishing I were going back this year...but it won't work for me. My family is headed to Rome the next morning and all that travel might be a bit much for me.

Hope all the sickies and sick kids are doing better today.

I posted last time about how I had hurt my foot. Of course now that that's getting better finally, I've gotten sick and been running a fever. I tried to do the elliptical this morning, but only managed 20 minutes. I hate losing all of this time!

The dog and cat are even getting along better now. It is so cute to watch the kitten pounce on the dog's tail. I admit to praising and petting the dog just to get her to wag more so the kitten will pounce again. :lmao:
:rotfl: Introducing animals is fun. It took my two cats a long time to be convinced that the kitten wasn't a space alien last June. :lmao: They love him now though. We've had the rabbits since December and the cats still aren't sure about them.

The Princess Meet: the thread leader is not really promoting the meet that much, unfortunately. It's at Port Orleans Riverside on Saturday at....4:30? 4? I can never remember! It's in there somewhere...
Wow, yeah I hadn't even heard about that one even though I read that one. I can't do it anyways because we've got Le Cellier reservations at .. 2:40?

Princess Marathon Runners I too would love to meet up with everyone on Princess weekend. It's a solo trip for me - don't have any plans yet - I arrive Friday and leave early Monday. Where is everyone staying? I'm at ASMu.
We're going on Friday and staying until the following Friday. We originally were going to stay at Coronado Springs, but I think now we're leaning towards Caribbean Beach. The last two days we'll be at the Polynesian.

:woohoo:

DS only has a half day tomorrow, which means Momma does too! I can sleep in until 6:30, incline walk in the afternoon and even pull out the Wii and try the BL game I got for Christmas!

This will be a vast improvement over today, when my only exercise will be free weights during BL...on the bright side, my stomach is feeling much better. Sore, but not sour.

Who's ready for a Nor'easter?! I have chili and cornbread ready to go!

Maria :upsidedow

Maria, is the half day due to the snow? I keep checking our school's website, but there's nothing about tomorrow...yet. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. We don't have chili & cornbread, but we do have Lucky Charms! :cool1:

Hi Julie,

Yep, it's the snow. We got the phone call a little while ago from the principal -- they have an automatic system, so it's easy to know. I also saw it on the school closings on abc. I was watching and they seemed to add 2 or 3 every time they ran through the schools...ds's school doesn't follow the public school system, so we can't count on that.

Lucky Charms sound like a magically delicious way to get through the storm! :shamrock:

I suspect by tomorrow AM most area schools will either be closed or closing early...Dennis thinks they'll be back Thursday. I admit I hope not, I enjoy a day at home when I feel well! :thumbsup2

Kathy – Congrats on joining the Half Fanatic Asylum! Feel free to lift my graphic for your signature, I did that myself. Patricia is being a typically finicky 19 year old on the move out issue. She’s also learned a lesson in the value of a good credit rating in renting an apartment—something her potential roommates never considered and thus never protected (unlike what we did to help Patricia).

Mel- Sporting leopard for Princess? Woohoo!!

Good luck to all of you with big piles of snow around. I can’t really relate directly to this, but I hope having all that white stuff around works out for you.

I am coming off of 2 really rough days at work that just suddenly became busy, busy, busy due to outside influences and my office becoming someone else’s political football, but I have survived.

I finally registered for the Run Wild Half Marathon on 2/21. It’s a small local race in Houston, but I think it will fit in well with my schedule for a PR attempt. I also won a free entry to the Clear Lake Olympic Triathlon during my tri club meeting last night. I did this race last year and it was a complete debacle—I sliced my foot open on sharp rocks that did not get cleared on the swim portion, then I got 2 flat tires on a bad road on the bike portion, and then …well, I don’t want to even talk about the run. This time, however, this will be different! The downside of this race is that it is 1 week before the DL half, but I wasn’t going to run that for a PR anyway.

Finally, I got my art print (as seen in my current avatar) framed with the race pins mounted on the print border. It is waiting to be hung at a prime spot in my office.

Hi Cousins,

I'm slinking back in to say hi. I see I have a ton of catching up to do with my old cousins and :welcome: to all of the new cousins. I'm looking forward to getting to know everyone.

Richard - Sorry to hear work has been tough. I hope the rest of your week is easier. :goodvibes

Maria - We just got the phone call. No school tomorrow for us as well! :cool1:

As for me, things have been pretty busy around here, which is part of the reason for my lack of posting. The kids seem to have a lot of activities, school projects, etc lately. Plus, we are putting an addition onto our house. The time that I would normally DIS has been spent elsewhere, researching and shopping for carpet, tile, furniture, etc. Fun, but busy. I have been running just 3 days per week, and pretty short distances as well. I just can't seem to find my motivation. :confused3 My next race won't be until May, so I'll start planning my training soon. I hope that's all I need to get going again.

Hello to Debra, Corinna, Mel, Jeanne, Jen, Jen B, Jackie, Kathy, and everyone else. I promise to be a better cousin and try to keep up with this thread!

Love the idea...specially the pic with the Ohana sign. I'm cheap and easy...food court is fine, Ohana is fun, Kona may be too small.

Kathy...welcome to the asylum. We're at OKW for Princess.

Hi there Ohana - Wow, I really didn't keep up with the mixer at all on Monday. It's been a bit of an adventure here, with the snow and various other commitments. I'll pop in there again....soon. Seems like it did OK on its own, regardless. Thank goodness.

I had a brainstorm for another question: Tell about your favorite non-Disney vacation.

Princess Meet - I'm kind of leaning toward Captain Cook's Food Court - we could get Dole Whips (or beverages at the bar upsairs, even??) and while it's not huge, it's more of a relaxed atmosphere than the Kona or Ohana, i.e. we don't need to show up all at once and be seated etc. I'm not opposed to doing a real restaurant if that were important to a majority, but it does not sound like it. :confused3

My other question is this: Is Captain Cooks' a better choice than Downtown Disney if we are talking about Saturday early afternoon? Rebecca, it sounds like this would potentially also conflict with your LaCellier reservation. Oh, logistics!

Sounds like an Ohana party at AS Sports! :woohoo: I'll be bunking there as well this trip. Maybe we should just meet at Sports!!!

Christine I wish your son were my neighbor - I could have used a hand with the snow shoveling today. Did he make some money? And heading to Rome in March! That sounds fantastic and like it makes total sense to miss the Princess this year. I definitely would not want to contend with jet lag on top of post-race fatigue. Especially the way you have to get up in the middle of the night for these Disney races. Or maybe that would actually be good - I don't know!

Rebecca sorry to hear you are coming down with something now too. Don't worry too much about missed training - it happens to everyone. You don't lose any ground in a few days.

JenB - I am amazed that my arms even feel great. I think I had my sore muscles already last fall from Bodypump - of course I'll wake up tomorrow and regret that I just said that!! I can't believe how much snow you guys are getting! Mmm. Ohana breakfast.

Maria - it sounds like you're feeling better if you've got Chili and cornbread on the brain! You are sure getting walloped with the snow this winter too!

Kathy - the back to back races I am doing are Burnsville Heart of the City Which ironically has a lot of miles in a nature preserve

And

Minneapolis Half Marathon

I am also going to have to see about getting the Disney Apples to Apples.

Nicole - a softball to the nose - OUCH! About the Expo - I imagine you'll want to budget a chunk of time for it. The checking in and all hopefully doesn't take longer than about 20 minutes, but then there's the shopping. Lots of vendors. If you like that sort of thing, there are running clothes, shoes, gels, bars (samples of them!) other races, some publications, sunglasses, those massage stick people as well as photo opportunities and the Disney shop with race specific merchandise. There are usually speakers as well at the larger Expos. I haven't seen anything about speakers at this one. It can be a lot of fun "do" an Expo. It can also be overwhelming, so your mileage may vary.

I have not been to the Princess before, but if it's anything like the marathon weekend, they will run busses from the host hotels about every 20 minutes. Otherwise, the bus to WWoS picks up at DHS. I had to go that route for the Minnie, but I'm hoping they run busses from the host hotels.

So glad you got some running clothes at last! It can make a huge difference, comfort-wise.

Richard! I was starting to get concerned and was preparing to send out a search party! Glad to hear that you're hanging in there and certainly hope your week gets better from here.

That half is coming right up! Run Wild will be the perfect venue for some leopard shorts! Congratulations on your free-do-over. This year will definitely be different. It can't help but be better!

Good luck on your appointment tomorrow!

Julie - it does sound like life has taken over at your house! As it does. No need to ever slink back - it's great to see you! A little while of "easy" running sounds like a good idea - plenty of time to train for that race when it gets within striking distance!

As for me: Well, I have failed to get a long run yet this week. :rolleyes1 That is what I get for putting it off. I have, however, gotten several hours of solid shoveling in the past few days. It's not as good as running, but I tell you, it feels like an event. I've got a picture that shows just how much of a glacier I have in my front yard. The unfortunate thing is that there is a good chunk that is frozen solid since Christmas, and I'm trying to keep the driveway from getting blocked when the plow pushes more snow against this formation:

IMG_2027_2.jpg

The place where the shovel is planted - that is the offending encroachment. The plow shoved that into my driveway. Also, I have started having to shovel off the top of the glacier so I can still throw the next round up top. Otherwise it is getting too high. So I shovel the driveway and road and then I get up there and shovel off the pile of snow. You can see the secondary pile in the back - it is much bigger now, however. If anyone is interested in piles of snow. I know we've had less snow than the East coast, but the situation with the driveway is....well, it's reached a near-crisis and I feel like I'm in a pitched battle to keep it at bay.

My PLAN: I am going to get as long of a long run as I can manage tomorrow morning. I have a real Valentine's 5K on Saturday (it is more spectacle than race and I am considering jogging it while wearing fairy wings. True story.)And then the WISH race on Sunday, depending how I'm feeling, it will be 5K or 10K, I am going to decide that day, based on how hard I ran on Saturday. Oh, my training is all fouled up, but if the main idea of the Princess Half is "We hope everyone runs in a tiara!!," well, I'm not sure it really matters that much. :confused3 I got my race number 1699. I'm just psyched it starts with a 1!

And finally:

Disneyland Planners I am turning my attention to Howard Johnson's. We would have stayed there last year if it hadn't been for that deal at DLH. They have microwaves in some rooms. That could be nice. And it is closer to the park entrances than the Disney hotels, even. I don't know - it's a thought, anyway.

Hey Ohana, could you please pray for the Brown family? I do not know this family personally, but their 14 year old son, Todd, was shot and killed in one of our middle schools today by another student. It is a senseless killing. He shot him in the back of the head while changing classes. I cannot imagine the grief that family is experiencing right now.

Thank you. :littleangel:

I'm just getting online for the DIS today, and wanted to make sure I responded to this awful news. Allie, I'm so sorry for the family and the community. You are all in my thoughts.

I'll try to catch up with everyone later, but the rest of the post is about me, I'm afraid. :upsidedow We're doing okay, no worries. Like the rest of the area, we got hit with about 2 feet of snow. We're lucky that we have power & heat, as many do not. Internet connections are intermittent right now, so I've been focusing mostly on keeping up with work things & my brother who's stuck in MD. Things are improving, though, with only another 4 inches expected after last night's 4.

DOOD and I have spent 2-3 hours every day (each of us) shoveling out our apartment building and those of our elderly neighbors. We've also shoveled out neighbors' cars and helped push out those that got stuck. Today I'll be doing a grocery run for neighbors who can't get out (well, shuffle to the store that's in walkable distance). A real coming-together of most of the Pittsburgh community. (Well, except for two neighbors who have yelled at me, but I'm not going to dwell on their negativity.)

I haven't managed to run since Thursday and most of my workouts have been snow shoveling & WO DVDs. We have been to the gym--walked the three miles there (took an hour)--but then didn't have the energy/motivation to run on the TM. :rotfl2: so did weights, etc.--before walking back. Turns out walking uphill in the uncleared snow and slush is a little like running on sand. :rolleyes1

To Corinna, Nicole, Jen and all who experience this weather on a regular basis (or those who have been getting the same blizzards, like JenB, Christine, Maria, Julie, and Kathy), :worship:

Anyway, I'm pretty much posting to here and the Lean Meaners thread to let you know I'm with you in spirit! Oh, and DOOD and I will be going to WDW for spring break, which overlaps with the Princess Half. :cool1: I'm not running the half, for various reasons (yeah, $$ is one of them), and haven't yet begun to plan the trip. (That pesky internet thing.) But we'll be there, and will be scream-teaming for you, if not also volunteering! :thumbsup2

Debra - thanks so much for checking in and letting us know what you've been up to and that you're OK. What an incredible amount of shoveling and how nice that you're helping others as well - makes my driveway glacier seem a little ridiculous, really. Once we get out, the roads are pretty much clear. It's 1000% harder places that aren't regularly hit because you don't have the infrastructure in place. My hat goes off to YOU and all the others on the east coast who are contending with so incredibly much snow this year. Stay strong.

And I am so, so thrilled and delighted that you'll be along for the Princess weekend! It seems like a majority of us from Ohana are at All Stars, with the highest concentration being at Sports, whatever that is worth to ya.

Very funny :lmao: I haven't been away THAT long, Corinna, although if the crowd at my meeting yesterday had turned into a mob I might have needed that search party.
I am sure my appointment will go well, especially since I am down somewhere between 20 - 30 lbs from the last physical. Hopefully, they'll enjoy not having to tell someone to lose weight or risk various health consequences. I do still need to lose some weight, but I am a lot closer to my goals than last year.

I love this photo! The snow looks so nice, and is lots more than I have seen around my home down here if I added up all the total snow I have ever seen here. I do hope the snow war with the plowing reaches a resolution sometime soon.

Debra - Sorry about being pretty much snowed in, but I admire how you guys are getting out and about, and mostly for helping out your neighbors (don't pay any real attention to the negative views of a few!).

I have finally framed my Goofy Race art print and pins, which are now hanging in a prime spot in my office.

IMG00112-20100210-0941.jpg

I'm glad to hear everyone is surviving the snow without too many problems. Wish we had some of it down here instead of the mid-30s and rain crap that we've had all winter instead. Make the most of your days off without going stir-crazy, if that's possible. :)

It sounds like a lot of you are going to have a great time at the Princess. Maybe I'll have to add that to the race schedule one of these years. Not this year though. Going for the Coast to Coast instead.

Last thing before heading home....something needs to be done about this dangerous and unsafe sport of softball. I got hit in the face with a softball bat when I was little and got to spend several hours staring up into a bright light as the doctors put stiches under my eye and on/behind my eyelid. Oh what fun.

Note to self: Don't play softball with Team Ohana :lmao:

Yeah!!! We have another cousin coming to Princess.

I think the food court at Poly sounds like a good place to meet. After we hang out we can go upstairs and get strange looks by posing with the Ohana sign. What time are people thinking?

Richard: Nice looking medal display. I finally got a display for our medals. I'll try to post a picture on facebook-- I'm really bad at getting pictures to appear here-- can you link to facebook ones?

We are digging out a bit from the snow but it is now falling fast and furious. Getting to work in the morning will be interesting. Hopefully the day will be relatively quite. DD6 and I had lots of fun today enjoying our snow day from work and school. We opted to close our office today for safety reasons with blizzard warnings going on (and we NEVER close). After shoveling 5 inches of slush the actual snow started to fall and it was awesome packing snow. We had a snowball fight, made snowmen, and did a little sledding in our yard. Totally fun! We also had a craft filled day inside-- painting, drawing, and making shrinky dinks :)

I do have to say that I think the Princess half will be the only race where most of my cross training has been shoveling.

Richard: I'm really bad at getting pictures to appear here-- can you link to facebook ones?

Not that I know of, Jen. I opened a free photobucket account and then link to the photos there after cropping them.

Not that I know of, Jen. I opened a free photobucket account and then link to the photos there after cropping them.

Actually, the picture I posted of Sienna during the snow last week was from my Facebook page. I've linked to them several times with success, and trust me, with my limited tech ability, that's an accomplishment!

I'm not even going to make individual comments - just a general WOW! to all of you battling the snow. I have nothing but respect and admiration for everyone who's shoveling, and shoveling, and shoveling - my 5 inches just about did me in, and I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like to have an endless amount falling. Good luck to everyone - stay warm and safe, please!

Jackie
