Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Jeanne,
I don't think I can comprehend the miles on your feet right now, but I will share my best sore feet tip just in case it might help you or someone else. If you have biofreeze and put it on the bottoms of your feet before bedtime, it's amazing how much of a difference it makes in how your feet feel in the morning. At least it has for me with not so, SO many miles. This is for out and out soreness - obviously not good for a situation with blisters! :scared1: You and John are an incredible team!

Richard - I can't keep up with your race schedule these days! Congratulations and good luck, both! (Hopefully that covers it) You are a racing machine!

Mel - my only concern about a 1pm ice cream meet is that I might sleep through it. That's typical post-race naptime for me, I think! I'll try to stay awake for it, though!

Maria - I'm so glad life is manageable again for you! It's my opinion that this is a really challenging time to go into training for a race. The days are getting shorter, the temps getting cooler. It's just tougher than the spring and summer training. We'll get there, though. Also, we should compare notes for our upcoming trips!

Me- Bodypump, round 3 this morning! I was a few minutes late and the instructor (who is adorable) hollered "Come on up - there's a big space right up here by me!" Oh man - late, singled out AND in the front row! Fortunately, it doesn't really bother me - there are mirrors - everyone can see everyone anyhow. I upped some of my weights a bit and I can really feel it in my arms now. Apparently, I want to look just slightly ripped in my race photos in January. :rotfl:

Oh, I had a bad run on Saturday. Had CASH come and pick me up about a mile from home because I was just that uncomfortable. Intestinal discomfort is no joke when you're running, I tell you! I came home and finished up on the treadmill, though. Ugh.

Jeanne - I was looking at the OBX results this morning, and I saw your name and thought "this must be a mistake." Surely she didn't just spontaneously decide to do a second marathon a week after NYC. Not the woman who swore she was retiring. Not the woman who wouldn't sign up for anything at WDW in January because it was too close to NYC. Not Jeanne! And then I log into FB and see that yes, indeed, Jeanne DID go to OBX and decide to do a second marathon in 2 weeks! WAY TO GO GIRL! That's dedication and support! And a HUGE congratulations to John for completing his first marathon. We need to get together after Richmond and celebrate!

Jackie

Oh Jackie, correction: it was actually 2 marathons within one week (because NYC started and finished so late, I was able to complete OBX less than a week before I finished NYC! Suffice it to say, I did it all for love....and not love of the sport! Seriously though, when I consider the support my family provided to me last week, how could I NOT? (You saw the race report, right?)

I can't wait to hear how you do in Richmond.....you are so going to rock it! Is Bill doing that one also? And how are things on the Annie front....has she come to her senses about not quitting school?

Corinna: I am scurrying to finish up here, so I can plop on the sofa and spread Bio Freeze all over my feet. The blisters are covered with moleskin, so I should be OK. If not, you'll hear the screams from here!

Where is our fearless leader Deb? She will be happy with the double miles I am racking up for Ohana.

Be careful, Jeanne! give that moleskin a wide berth - it's porous stuff. Although, I suppose if they aren't broken, it probably won't hurt. If they are, well, ouch, I would think!

Hi Cousins!

Maria - Glad to hear that worked has slowed down...at least a little bit. Those 4:30 mornings are tough, especially now that it's dark AND cold (with the exception of today).

Corinna - Nice job on the Body Pump, especially being in the front row. :thumbsup2 Sorry to hear about the bad run on Sat. :sad1:

Jeanne - :worship::worship: What more can I say?

Jen B - I hope you're enjoying your trip. :goodvibes

I am happy to report that I was able to drag myself out of bed at 4:30 this morning for what was supposed to be an 8 mile run. Turns out I miscalculated the distance, so it was only 7.4 miles. I'm really happy that I got up this morning because, when the alarm went off, I was trying to come up with every excuse I could think of to go back to bed. I was exhausted because I took DD to the Miley Cyrus concert last night. It was a late night  (and a school night!), but I forced myself to get up and the run was lovely, if dark, with temps around 60 degrees.

Hello to Richard, Debra, Mel, Kathy, Jackie, Jen, and all of my cousins. I hope everyone is having a great week.

Soooooo much to catch up with...I've been gone so long, and have missed you all! Fall is a busy time, as usual, for me--and this one has been even busier. This will have to be brief, but know that I've been thinking of you!

'Ohana...Love Mel's idea about a meet at Beaches and Cream on Saturday at 1.00 p.m.. What do you all think?

Mel: Great job with your duathlon, you Athena champion you! Wow, I didn't realize how packed in your fall is...makes me feel like such a slacker. (And I am, I am.) I'm really sorry to hear you've been having problems with the b2b and your ankle. I hope that your St. Pete 1/2 goes well, though, that you finish strong and pain free, and that you can make a decision about the Goofy that makes you happiest.

Richard: WTG with your half IM! What a great report! And on top of all your other events this season. :worship: The Ten in Texas sounds particularly fun, but I loved all the details with the IM. That you made the time to thank the volunteers is so "you," and one of the reasons I'm looking forward to finally meeting in person. Congrats on meeting your goal AND having a great time.

How's your ankle? Will you be able to do San Antonio?

Jackie: Good luck this weekend with the marathon. You've been training hard for it and you're going to rock your race! I'm so sorry to hear about the company's shenanigans, but have to admit that I giggled that their unfair practices inspired you to run faster.

Jeanne: Such good things for you--another trip with Nancy--yay! and I didn't know Castaway Cay had a 5K. Makes me want to take a trip on the Dream when it starts sailing. You did a great job at the NYC marathon (you rocked it) and yet another marathon. You are a wonder, woman and a big woo hoo to John too!! :woohoo: I'll have to read your NYC RR today! :goodvibes

JenB: So glad you have a good time at TOT; I'm gonna miss that race and don't know if I'm up for a 1/2 marathon at night. I think it's very romantic--in a way only athletes can understand--that you'll be doing the Rutgers Race. :cloud9: Oh, I'm on FB as D.K. Peterson, just so you know. ;) So jealous you're in WDW right now, but you deserve the R&R.

Kathy: Great news on your Towpath 1/2 and the PR. Well-earned and well-deserved!

Maria: Good to hear Dennis' knee surgery went okay--he's a trooper! I've inherited a new bowling shirt to wear this January (DOOD's late GM); be sure to let him know. Very glad to hear your training is going well and work is manageable. How are the Sherlock Holmes stories going? You ready for the Robert Downey, Jr./Jude Law flick? I missed V last night and forget to DVR it--dang it! I loved the '80s version.

Julie: How are the kidlets? I hope they're just normal kid sick and nothing scary serious. Great news about being able to get out there for your runs, what with everyone being sick recently. And I know I mentioned this, but taking DD to see Miley qualifies you as best mom, ever!

Corinna: You've been doing so well this year with all your fitness goals, and I'm especially impressed that you've been shaking things up with the workouts. You're a determined person, you are, and I'd appreciate it if you sent some of your mojo my way. You most certainly are going to looked ripped come January. Reefer Madness? As in based on the campy, anti-drug movie Reefer Madness? Do tell!

As for me: In a nutshell? Training for the Goofy is painful (as with everyone else); I'm overcommitted with freelance work projects until the end of November; have gained four pounds in a month; have upset my ILs by not planning to see them over the holidays; my DBIL is expected a baby (not in a relationship); my brother's upset I haven't met my niece/his daughter yet; DOOD turned in his promotion materials last week and it'll be months before we know if his job is secure--he's a basket case; and I saw The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus on preview--worth seeing--as well as 2012--not worth seeing. Whew.

No wonder I've missed you all. You're my relaxation, my inspiration, and my motivation.

Sorry for the lack of personal replies in this one but I just wanted to give a big  to this team and say how glad I am to be part of this crazy group. The support of having a team really helps and I thank you all.

I am now back from what was a really nice vacation. DH tried out and even got into one of the American Idol shows-- didn't make it to the second round but had a good time. I got in some nice runs while at WDW going between Hollywood Studios and Epcot, so that hopefully when I hit that point in the marathon I can tell myself I've been there and done that without any trouble. I'm now back to work in full swing of craziness and parents who are stressed their kids will die of swine flu. Fun times... Did get in 6 miles last night with a 16 mile LR on tap for later this week :scared1:

Maria: I think it's awesome that you are watching V. I loved the series when it was originally on and am pretty psyched to see the new one although I'm sure it won't be quite the same. I have 2 episodes on tivo and am saving them for my long run this week (the advantage of a TM in front of the tv)

I also just finished Twilight and really enjoyed the books despite the clear cheese factor of the series. I'm open for new reading suggestions from any of you. I tend to like sci-fi and fantasy but an open for whatever.

I'm in for Beaches and Cream at 1pm on Sat. marathon weekend.

Deb: Sorry things have been so crazy for you. I hope it gets better soon. I promise I'll post my Oct hours soon, gotta find the notebook first...

/
Hooray! Debra and JenB are back!!!

Debra - we missed you so much. The Ohana team without you was a little like a wagon missing one of its wheels, just kind of bumping along. So glad you have internet at home again! And so sorry about all your stress. It does sound like a lot right now!

Jeanne How are your feet doing? Better, I hope? At least a little?

Julie Wow - it sounds like a rough 8 the night after a big concert. You are a rockstar for getting out there and getting it done in spite of darkness and fatigue!

Have you read any Tamora Pierce? YA fantasy, but very engaging stuff, for the most part. The Alanna series is great as is the "Protector of the Small" and I've also really enjoyed her more recent ones with dog names - "Terrier" and "Bloodhound" More in the Sci-Fi vein, have you read any Sheri S. Tepper?

As for me: I cleaned up the house for my birthday party on Sunday and cleaned up my training log and my training plan. Such that I don't know where they are now. Ugh. Had a reasonable 8 mile run today. I need to sit down with my training plan and the workout schedule for the Y and really plot out the rest of my half marathon training. I'm feeling a little mentally renewed after my brief semi-sabbatical. I'm also increasingly aware of how quickly race weekend is approaching!

Thanks, Debra, for the kind words! So sorry to hear about the family issues over the coming holidays, but I am glad we'll still get to see you.
The Ten for Texas is always a great local event, but it is becoming a regional event because it is so well-run and so much fun. However, completing the Half IM was just a great feeling--enough that I'd like to lead everyone around for the 70.3 miles just to relive and share the experience. Unfortunately, an experience like that cannot really be shared, and any reliving will have to wait at least until next April in Galveston.

Yes, I will still be doing San Antonio, unless I my ankle or knee takes a step backwards between now and Sunday. I may drop to the half-marathon, but I am still planning on making a go of it. Fortunately, I have until race day to decide if I want to downgrade to the half. regardless of which one I actually end up doing, the course favors me in that the half has a cut-off time of 4.5 hours and the full has a cut-off time of 7.5 hours. Maybe this will end up being a blessing by making me be rested up for the race by keeping me off my feet until then.

Perhaps best of all, my DW (Darcy) will be coming to San Antonio with me for the weekend [first time she has travelled to an event with me!].

Meanwhile, I have broken out the spreadsheet and am starting to plan out my 2010 tri and running events. So far it seems like it'll be a pretty full year.

Good Afternoon, Cousins!

I hope everyone is having a lovely day! I've done all the work I'm going to start today, so I have time for a post or two. I did my new strength (I'm adding 1/2 hr on the exercise bike to my 1/2 hr of free weights) routine yesterday, and 5M this am. Right now, I am so glad I already worked out. I would almost cry if I had to go home and 5M! :sad1:

Richard -- So very awesome DW can accompany you! Having your spouse along really makes it special (even when he does leave you in the dust, trust me, I know:rotfl: ). Does your wife run, or are you trying to convert her? Sometimes just going to a race will do it. :thumbsup2

Corinna -- Is it too early to say Happy Birthday!

JenB -- I hope you like V! It's moving at warp speed so far. :goodvibes Should I panic because dh didn't get ds an appointment in time before they ran out of flu shots? Sort of wishing that had been my task, now. :headache: But, he's never had it before...and dh and I got shots, so hopefully we won't bring it home.

Debra -- I have yet to start Sherlock Holmes, but it's in the queue! I have a couple of The Ghost and XXX books to read first. Gotta get some murder mysteries in. :thumbsup2 Way too much going on in your personal life -- feel free to vent, we all understand. :grouphug:

Julie -- Super Mom points for doing the Miley gig! If only I thought she could sing -- but I don't think Taylor Swift can, either, so apparently I am not a good judge! :lmao:

Jeanne -- You must be our mileage leader, or at least close! :cool1:

Jackie -- How are you? Are you ready for the Race?! :yay:

Mel -- Ok, tell us how your ankle is doing. We worry, you know.

I'll be enjoying my grilled chicken on a multi-grain sandwich thin while I think of you guys tonight. Ok, not strictly true -- I'll probably thinking about all the junk I'll be eating at Universal a week from now. I'd better eat healthy until I go!

Maria :upsidedow

Corinna -- Is it too early to say Happy Birthday!

For next year, definitely too early! My brithday was on the 4th. :) I appreciate the thought, though and it was a pretty good one!

Corinna:

HAPPY "BELATED" BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!
party::bday::cake::bday:party:

(so sorry I missed it!)

The feet are improving, but still are not back to normal. I'm a little concerned because we are going out of town (again!) tomorrow for my daughter's engagement party and I can't find a pair of shoes that will fit my feet right now. I amy have to resort to a little pair of Crocs ballerina slippers and hope the Greeks don't notice!

Deb: sorry for all the grief you are going through right now....you know my solution......:drinking1

Jackie: good luck in Richmond! You are so going to rock it! Enjoy those McDonald's French Fries.

Mel: Ice cream at Beaches and Cream sounds good to me!
Everybody else:

A quick check-in before we leave in the AM...

Maria - Absolutely terrified, that's how I am. You'd think I'd never done a marathon before. For some reason I'm considering this my first "real" marathon. (Sorry Debra - somehow Bill just drained the whole seriousness out of January!) I guess I'm as ready as I can be. I've done the training, much more than I ever thought I would do. I just wish the really long runs had been easier.

Richard - Good luck in San Antonio!

Debra/Mel
- Beaches & Cream at 1:00 Saturday. On the calendar. I'm not sure when I'm going to find time for the parks with all the eating I'm doing!

We leave tomorrow morning at 8:00. I'm meeting 3 other people from my Galloway group and riding with them. Bummer that some idiot broke into my van last night and took my GPS that I was planning to take, but wonderful that my DH's boss had a spare that he's loaning me for the trip. Gotta go finish packing now!

Jackie

Maria - DW doesn't run unless soneone is chasing here (more her words than mine :lmao:). On the other hand, it could give me the opportunity to test out the schloarly work of professional triathlete Samantha McGlone :rotfl::hippie::scared1:

Jackie - Thanks, and good luck to you as well this weekend!

Good Afternoon, Cousins!

Today is my rest day, and I've been looking forward to it this week. Once I finally get home for the evening, I am going into cocoon mode, resting both my mind and body :thumbsup2

Richard -- You are making me  ! Well, however you spend your non-racing hours, I hope you and dw have a great time.

Jackie -- I know you are just going to kill this marathon! You have the miles under you, so now you can just fly! :yay:

Corinna -- Oops! So sorry I missed it, I hope a wonderful time was had by all, and especially you! :dance3:

Jeanne -- Those crocs are cute, I'm sure no one will even mention them. :cutie: Enjoy the engagement party, it sounds like it will be quite the event. We want a full report, especialy if there's a lot of Opa! going on! :listen:

Everyone have a spectacular weekend, especially all our racers!

Maria :upsidedow

Jackie: Good luck this weekend :goodvibes

Thanks for the book suggestions, I'll have to check some of them out.

I got in 15 miles this morning-- I've decided I just need to get faster cause these LRs take up all my free time :lmao: I made it in 3 hours which is actually pretty good for me. I also watched the V pilot and was a bit diasppointed-- hopefully the next few episodes improve, we'll see.

Hi Team!

I just wanted to make a quick mini-race report before heading in to work today.

Yesterday I completed the San Antonio Marathon. I started off at a solid half marathon pace and around mile 9 I made the final decision to go for the full marathon with everything feeling mostly fine. At that point I could have pushed myself to a half marathon PR on my current pacing, so I slowed a bit with the prospect of another 17+ miles to go. My biggest problem seemed to be that my heart rate wanted to be a bt higher than normal , so I threw in my walk breaks a bit sooner than I usually would. I went with a 4/1 run/walk for most of the first 9 miles, then a 2.5/1 for the next 9 or so miles, then 2/1 for a bit, finally settling into something like 1/1 for the last 7 miles letting my heart rate be my guide.

I really loved that my wife came with me and saw her outside at mile 8 (outside the front door of our hotel), whcih gave me a great mental boost.

I knew I wasn't up to running this for a time goal, so I did it for the experience. I was a bit disappointed in going over 6 hours, but I made the decision to pull back the effort in the final miles to not risk injury (and that was a tough decision to make at that point!). In the end I finished with 6:11:38, and am happy with that considering the way I felt and finishing with a great attitude. It's amazing how better I can feel about myself after seeing the medical tent filled with faster, but sicker, runners as I walk by.

There were definitely some personal victories along the way as my times at both the 25K and 30K points would have been PRs at those distances. :yay: This race also tells me that wile I am capable of finishing the Goofy, I'd better keep up with the longer distance runs between now and then. Fortunately, I already know I have no time expectation for those races other than finishing.

Ever feel like your life is an endless string of Mondays....? :lmao:

DOOD hit a deer late Thursday night. Don't worry he's okay--but it did a number on our new (used, but new to us) car. The one car we share. And it's the second accident he's had in less than a year. We're not a happy household. But we did buy a new bottle of bourbon recently. Just by coincidence, right Jeanne? ;)

On to happier, brighter, shiny-as-a-penny news...

JenB: So glad you had a good time in the World and were able to do some running on the course we'll be seeing oh-so-very soon. Sounds like a good strategy to me. Sorry to hear all the craziness that goes along with H1N1. I can't imagine the headaches. :headache: I know exactly what you mean by needing to get faster to free up some non-training time. Now if the body would just cooperate. I've been getting a LOT slower with the Goofy training. Ugh.

Corinna: I know I wished you Happy Birthday on FB, but you deserve it again! And a very Happy UnBirthday, too! :cool1: Not quite sure how cleaning the house fits into your birthday plans, but hey.... Oh, training plan? What's that? I've so fallen by the XT wayside.

Richard: Great Scott, man! I didn't think you'd do the San Antonio full after how you were feeling. Congratulations! So very cool that DW was able to be there to spur you on to greatness. (Not that she deserves ALL the credit, depending on your scholarly findings. Hah!) And what's on the 2010 schedule?

Oh, and hey, I thought your expectation for the Goofy was dragging me along when I want to quite? :confused3 :worship:

Maria: Yeah, I think V's zipping along too--whatever happened to the leisurely development of a narrative? Btw, have you seen The (new) Prisoner? Man, that plot is so accelerated that it's barely coherent. I so loved the original and I have a crush on Ian McKellen in this one, but I'm not sure about the pacing.

You've been doing so well with your training--getting faster and faster! :thumbsup2 What's your training plans, if anything, for the Universal trip? (Me, I generally stop training and live to regret it....:rolleyes1)

Jeanne: How was the engagement party? If the Greek is busy looking at your feet, I'm not predicting a happy marriage. :lmao:

Jackie: SO sorry to hear about the GPS, that's the kind of thing that throws me off for days. But I'm glad you had people to go to Richmond with. And that you had such a stellar showing at the race. You rock!

I loved the RR, btw. I think 13 miles + does make me want a donut and a beer (I don't consume the latter at all). Of course, I'm still waiting to hear you ate a banana. Seriously, your description of the race--both the course and your time with friends--had me smiling. Congratulations!

Mel: Ice cream, ice cream, ice cream. :upsidedow

As for me: Well, you've heard my big news. And the regular reading/tv/film stuff. Just finished The Book of Deliverance Dane, saw Where the Wild Things Are finally (not a children's movie but a movie about childhood--big difference), and jonesing for more quality episodes of V, The Prisoner, Heroes, and Fringe. Hmmm, sci-fi fetish?

Ever feel like your life is an endless string of Mondays....? :lmao:

Constantly! Today I got notified that my office's health insurance plan was cancelled due to nonpayment. :scared1: After calling them to tell them that I the check I sent in October had cleared my account I was unceremoniously told that I would have to get them documentation. An hour later I was sending it to them after a trip to the bank to get a good copy of the cleared check. About 2 hours later I was called that the insurance was reinstated. Of course I had other plans for today, like resting. :rotfl:

Richard: Great Scott, man! I didn't think you'd do the San Antonio full after how you were feeling. Congratulations! So very cool that DW was able to be there to spur you on to greatness. (Not that she deserves ALL the credit, depending on your scholarly findings. Hah!) And what's on the 2010 schedule?

Oh, and hey, I thought your expectation for the Goofy was dragging me along when I want to quit?

It's just my hard-headedness that keeps my going sometimes, besides perhaps I only offered to carry you so someone would feel sorry for me in case I needed the carrying. :lmao: I'm still working on the 2010 schedule, but it tentatively includes Goofy, 2 5K's, 2-3 sprint tri's, 1 Olympic tri, 2 half ironman's (ironmen??), 1 half marathon and that gets me through October. I think this may be a bit much, but then again I've already done 13 events so far in 2009. :rolleyes1
