Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

My mixer contribution -- I only worked out 3 of my planned 5 times on my recent trip, so take this for what it's worth...

I wrote down each day and planned workout, and then checked them off if I did them. I think it made me more accountable since I could see what I had intended. I couldn't "forget" -- but I could ignore...I think if I hadn't written it down I might have done nothing at all. Still, it's hard to ignore the 5:40 wakeup calls Dennis insisted on so he could go to the gym before we started our day!

Maria :upsidedow

Oh, yay! A mixer subject I think I really know something about!

Please feel free to ask any other questions...I feel like I have a LOT of experience with this...

I travel for a living. On the road about 22-26 weeks a year for work, then toss in another 6-8 weeks of travel for fun/races/family visits/conferences. All this on top of triathlon training, where in peak season in an Ironman year I need to be training 15+ hours a week.

1. I ALWAYS have a pair of running shoes with me. Because they are bulkier/heavier than the pumps I wear for work, I usually wear them on the plane to save on space and weight in my bags. You can run almost anywhere, either on the road, a trail, or a treadmill at the hotel or gym. I bring my RoadID ankle band to wear, and try to carry some form of ID (and a cell phone, at times). The new SpiBelt is good for that...not as bulky as a fanny pack. I mostly work in places that I go back to over and over, and have learned where is good to run. You can also look up runs on maymyrun.com or look for the local running club website. Google is your friend.

2. Swimming. I also always have a pair of goggles, swim cap, and swimsuit with me (even if I slack off and don't swim). I don't swim in hotel pools to get a workout in. I have almost always been able to find a good 25 yard pool at a local health club or a community pool where I have traveled. (for WDW, the Swan and Dolphin and I think CSR have decent lap pools, but I don't usually swim for training at Disney.) Again, google is your friend. If you are a member of USMS (Masters swim), you can often swim with the local Masters group. Most gyms or even school pools have certain hours for lap swimming. Even at a gym, it is worth it to me to pay a $5-10 daily gym fee if I need to get a good workout. Many places that same fee will get you access to the weights and such, so good to combine those workouts to get the most for having to pay a few dollars. Almost every pool I have swum in has at least kickboards available, and most have pull buoys and even vests for water running. On occasion, I will do open water swims, depending on the place I'm at and what facilities and safety measures are available.

3. Biking. This is the tough one. It's crazy expensive, depending on the airline, to fly a bike around. And a pain in the booty. I have a recurrent job in Spokane, WA, so right now, I have a bike there, and have stored it with co-workers in between trips, so I just had to fly it up at the start of the summer, and will fly or ship it home in early fall. Most places I will just ride an exercise bike in the gym, though it is nothing like my triathlon setup. Or, I try to do more bike training on the weeks I am home, and focus on run and swim when I am out of town.
Where to ride? again, mapmyride.com is good. Local cycling clubs, etc.
Weather can make it tough, so that's another tough spot for training.

Packing: Luckily, in the summer, workout clothes don't take up much space, and the tech fabric washes and dries pretty easily. I put my used workout gear in a plastic bag to take it home, but nicer if I can at least rinse out the stinky stuff and let it dry overnight. I take tons of pairs of socks...they don't dry as fast, so I travel home with a bag of dirty socks every trip.

Sometimes it's a good idea to bring a fuel belt or water bottle holder along...running or riding in strange places, you don't know if there are going to be water fountains.

I don't take beach towels or extra towels...would just use whatever is handy in the place I'm at (have taken hotel towels to the gym, as long as I bring them back, of course).

questions or comments?

hope this helps a little. I think I do a pretty darn good job with training while on work assignments. At least for me, traveling alone, it gives me something to do other than work and go sit in my hotel. Had a fabulous time riding the Centennial Trail in Spokane and Coeur d'Alene last week!

Traveling for a race is different. Obviously, all the race stuff goes. I will ALWAYS carry on running shoes and socks, and for triathlon, my goggles and usually my bike shoes, and my race outfit. That way, if a bag gets misdirected, I have most of the essentials.

and on fun vacations...mostly same as for business travel, unless the fitness is built in. See backroads.com for the type of traveling I prefer. ;)

and yes, sometimes I actually go on vacation and relax. But not too much! ;)

Mixer question~ When I travel for work, I usually end up running with others whom I just met and know only by name and department. I make sure I have my RoadID on and usually check in with the hotel before going for a run. If you've never heard RoadID please take a moment and check it out. http://www.roadid.com/
A few years ago we had a bicyclist hit and killed by a motorist. It took three hours before we able to get a next of kin. He wasn't from our area and did not tell anyone where he was going. :confused3
I also pack a packet of Tide so I can do a wash in the sink so my clothes don't stink~
:scared:
Just my 2 cents......

Jack

Since I generally take short trips I pack what I need to run. If I don't run, then I know I already have enough to use the hotel gym (if they have what passes for one). For me, my running shorts are capable of doubling as swim trunks, so I am covered if I would rather swim, too. When I actually run while travelling, I rely on hotel staff or my sense of adventure to select a route.

Hi cousins,

Sorry I missed the mixer. Not that I would have had anything to add - I never exercise on vacation.

I hope everyone is having a great week. I have not been running at all, but I now have something to help me get (and stay) motivated - DH & I are definitely running the WDW marathon! We weren't sure if our finances and/or babysitting would allow us to do it, but everything fell into place today. I haven't officially signed up or booked airfare, but I booked a studio at OKW for that weekend.

I'm so excited to do this again (and hopefully do better than last time) and to see all of my cousins! :cool1:

Thanks for letting my ramble. Happy 4th of July, everyone!

I DID IT!

DH and I are officially registered for Goofy! Just got off the phone with Anthony Travel, and we're confirmed for 6 nights at POFQ plus 2 Goofy entries. What the heck have I done? :scared1:

Jackie

OMG, so many posts to read....I feel like I must have been away for days.
Sorry that I missed the missed the mixer question cuz I ALWAYS exercise while on vacation. I'll do whatever is available....hike, swim, walk or just use the workout room. That way I can usually justify the extra vacation eating!

Mel, Jackie and Bill: congrats on going Goofy! I initially had a twinge of wanting to join you, but ended up having a horrible nightmare that knocked some sense into me.:scared1: I'm doing the 5K (with Nancy, I think!), scream-teaming for the half and volunteering for the full (plus scream-teaming when my shift is over) We switched our OKW ressie to BLT so my kids get to use the monorail for their marathon transportation and I will be able to easily report for duty at the Pluto parking lot. Plus I can pretty much eat and sleep whenever I want.......Life is good

Debra: Congrats on your beautiful new niece! (I think I already got to you on FB)

Julie: Happy belated birthday (ditto about FB, where I think I was on time!)

Maria: Welcome back! I missed you! I hope you rode all those awesome Universal roller coasters!

Richard: congrats on the tri! Funny about the Statue of Liberty coming in last.....I think Minnie used to do that at WDW when they had the Minnie10K.
I'm jealous that you'll get to be at WDW for 10 days in January. We'll have to make it a quickie, so it's only gonna be 4 nights for us. Are you doing Goofy also?

That's it for now.......I have done absolutely zero work today!

Thanks to all of you for the well wishes from last weekend's tri.

Jeanne, I'm not planning to do Goofy, only the marathon. However, the possibility of doing Goofy has kept me from registering while I think about it still..... I think my biggest problem is starting to be the cost of all the race I want to do. I have already registered for a Novedmber marathon, which was like $80 under a special deal. I really want to do a Half Ironman in October, which is $240. I am planning a half marathon in December, another $70 - $90 likely, plus what ever I register for at Disney.....maybe I just talked myself out of it. I just don't know yet.....

Hello everyone, it's been crazy for me the past couple of weeks with DD being off of both school and camp not yet starting-- very little time to do work, parenting and house stuff-- precious little DIS time available.

Maria: Glad to hear you had a nice trip and :thumbsup2 on getting in 3 days of exercise.

Richard: congrats on the tri

JenG: thanks for the DL room suggestions, let's just say my DH was not to happy about the deal falling through.

For those who haven't heard my saga: We were trying to book a room for the DL 1/2 through Dreams Unlimited because they said they were working on getting a block of rooms for DISers and some kind of deal. We did not book a "backup reservation" because they kept telling us to wait and be patient and avoid a change fee when their rooms opened up. To make a long story short, the deal fell through and now all of the DL resorts are closed out of the 5 for 3 nights deal and the only place with openings is the very pricey Grand Californian which would cost us on extra $1000:scared1: We were bummed and a bit angry over the whole thing (mostly angry at myself for not booking when I originally wanted to several months ago). The story does have a happy ending though.. we called GETtravel and lucked into a room at the DL Hotel because someone had literally just called to cancel for the exact dates we wanted-- talk about luck:goodvibes The whole thing will only be $200 more than the original price, but I'll take it.

DOOD's return home has interrupted by schedule....Love him, but he's getting on my last nerve. :lmao:

Bad time to post, asking for updates, as the 4th of July weekend is upon us, but...I need your June numbers. There are too many cousins to individually name, so I'll call out just the DOOD. DOOD, you need to give me your numbers for the second half of June. You have a Garmin, the one I bought you, remember? No excuses. :rotfl2:

We've got quite a GOOFY group here! :woohoo: I'll probably be hanging out more on the Goofy thread as training picks up, here, but I expect to be asking lots of my cousin questions too. Here's who I have so far from the cousins. (I'm keeping a list of races on the first page of our thread, too. Check it out and let me know what need to be added/corrected.)

Going Goofy:
JenB & Butch (should I call him Butch, DH, or his name?)
Jackie & Bill
Mel (Is Jeff doing a race?)

Jackie: Congratulations on going Goofy and for the time at POFQ. I can't believe you're diving in feet first like that! Woo hoo! Your Galloway group must be so proud!!! (Me, too!)

Julie: Congratulations on the marathon! Just the motivation you need for training. Yay for OKW, too! Also, you could come do the Baltimore 1/2 with me....

Richard: Congratulations on the tri. I don't think I said that (here) earlier. I love the detail about the Statue of Liberty... About Goofy. You'll have more money for more races if you don't do it. (Of course, I want you to go Goofy, but am trying to argue against my selfish reasons.)

I think those are great prices, given your background. I haven't flown Continental in a long time, but I really like Southwest as a carrier. Still, if Continental is at the closer airport that is what I'd chose. Yes, for certain events convenience is everything for me. DOOD does the same thing with the swim/running shorts. Very convenient. I'm not at the point where a bathing suit could double as running gear for me. But think how easy it would be to rinse my clothes after running. Just hop in the pool and then the shower! :lmao:

Maura: With your fabulousness in terms of running and with your recent tri event, I think you can justify "just" walking on vacation. Congratulations!

Vicky: I love the Ziplocs. Never occured to me that coming here would be a good reason to shop. (You deserve an outlet trip soon, too, for some new clothes. :goodvibes) I like the idea of putting your stinky clothes in DF's suitcase. Just my $.02

Maria: Yay for working out 3/5 days while on vacay! That's great. And for pencilling in your WO. That seems like a good plan to me. If your DH were my DH, though, he might have to die. I'm not a very peaceful morning person. :rotfl: See my above post to Julie. Come to Baltimore.

Betsy: I might be PMing you soon, with travel-exercise questions. Of course, I'm dying to know what you do that keeps you on the road so often, but that's not relevant. I will say I'm impressed by how you keep up your training & event schedule with your heavy travel schedule. Extra socks are a great tip--I never think of needing them. And thank you for the Spigo brand recommendation--just the kind of information I need.

I've only recently begun to pony up for the gym fees when I travel, but I tend to agree with you--it can be so worth it. I, too, am a big fan of RoadID. Never would have thought to look up the local running club's website. Great idea! :thumbsup2 Do you find yourself sticking with "safe" running routes or the TM, or shifting when you run. More questions, but I have to think/organize them.

Jack: I'm so sorry to hear about the accident with the bicyclist. I think letting people know where you're going, that you're going out, might be something to think about. A packet of Tide, huh? Have you seen the new liquid detergent gels? I have some that I'm thinking of trying.

Jeanne: Your marathon weekend plans sound blissful and very well-organized. Even without doing the 1/2 or full, you've managed to jam-pack your time in. Even more than if you were on the course, I think. Maximum WISH time. :woohoo:

JenB: I hadn't read about your saga! :scared1: That's disappointed about DU's advice and how the packages fell through. I've never dealt with them, but it's not what I would have expected. Yay for GETtravel, though. What a lucky break! :yay:

As for me: Our happy household is now together again, and learning how to function again, not so happily. (Okay, the cats are ecstatic DOOD is home, so at least someone is happy.) We're trying to decide whether to make a last-minute trip out of town to visit DOOD's GM, as she's been sick. Bear with me if I'm not around.

I'm on a borrowed computer so this will be quick.....

Jen, sorry for your bad luck with DU. I can't imagine who told you that.....it just doesn't make any sense to hold off on booking. As long as you stayed with the same company, there should not have been a rebooking fee. Methinks you got some very bad advice. Perhaps you can talk to a supervisor and straighten things out. I have used DU many times before and only one time was there a problem when they accidentily misquoted a rate. As I would have expected, they acknowleged their mistake but honored the rate anyway. I've always found them to be a first rate agency. We are staying at Paradise Pier on the 5-for-3 deal. As you mentioned, the California hotel is too pricey and we have already been to the DL hotel. Nancy stayed at PP last year and really liked it. I hope it all works out for you.

Going Goofy:
JenB & Butch (should I call him Butch, DH, or his name?)
Jackie & Bill
Mel (Is Jeff doing a race?)

You missed Linda and I. I will be going for my 5th Goofy(Perfect Gofy) and Linda will be going for her 4th Goofy!

And Jackie, I can't believe that you're not only going to get to come to WDW (and party) but are going Goofy, too! I never would have thought Bill would be up for it. (Psst, don't tell him I said so, but he's gonna have to do a longer LR before tapering this year. :rotfl2:) And WTG with your most excellent, strong Galloway 2:30 run. Gotta love it when you finish strong and know it! P.S. More news, maybe pics, on Annie's graduation?

I'm happy to report that Bill has completed his first 10 mile LR. He's completely trained for Goofy! :rotfl:

Jackie

Happy 4th everyone-- Our local fireworks were really good but really late this year-- didn't start until 9:45pm, DD5 nearly slept through them. We just got home and tucked her in bed so I thought I'd say hi to everyone.

I decided to do the township 5k this morning-- it was a nice run but I was guilty of my usual going out too fast so the 2nd half of the run felt a bit rough. I was pleased overall with an average pace of 11:30 which is pretty good for me.

Thans all for you support of my tri efforts, and for wanting to spread the joy (or is that misery??) of doing the Goofy event.

I hope all is well with everyone over this fine weekend. My area continues to "enjoy" record heat, 8 days straight of 100 degrees + and 23 straight days of 97 degrees + !! Today's run was a bit difficult, but I still managed to keep a pace just a little over 12 min/mile doing a 5/1 run/walk program. I was completely drenched in sweat well before the end of the run. I think some of these hot summer runs msy not help to add miles, but do help my body be able to handle the longer distance endurance after cooler weather returns in October/November. Until then, however, (blah)....

I'm happy to report that Bill has completed his first 10 mile LR. He's completely trained for Goofy! :rotfl:

Jackie

Already he's trained more than last year!

Still don't have my own internet up and running yet, but I just had to borow someone's to report:

THE GREEK FINALLY PROPOSED!

We want ALL the details! CONGRATULATIONS!!! :dance3:

And yep, seems Bill has maybe figured out that 39 miles (or maybe 42) might, just might, require a little more training than the 6 miles he did last year...

Did a relatively easy 10 miles yesterday, then did a 4.5 mile combination hike/trail run today with DH. I guess that counts as Goofy training? I thought that it was cool today, but once we got out there, it was really, really humid.

Richard - I can't imagine trying to deal with 100+ temps for this long. I've been thrilled that we dropped below 90 for a couple of days and we could comfortably run in the evening.

Jackie
