Jack / Team Hakuna

Hey Team Ohana! Just your local Triple D resident wanting to stop by and wish you all a wonderful Easter! Hope you all have a great weekend!

Debra Are we having a social meet tomorrow? I will probably be early if we are since I will be taking the night off after the run yesterday. Just checking.

Bryan:yay::woohoo::cheer2:

Happy Easter, Team Ohana!!!

I hope everyone has a great day.
Beth - You are definitely running with the right spirit.

Sorry I've been MIA this weekend, cousins! The holiday weekend and a little LTO. I'll catch up tomorrow, before/during/after the mixer. :thumbsup2

:stitch: 'OHANA MONDAY MIXER :stitch:

A spring chick told me that many of us gave up goodies for Lent. Now that Lent has ended, Monday is a good time for this mixer question:

What is one healthy food you always have in your kitchen? What is one less-than-healthy food you always have in your kitchen?

Feel free to post pictures, talk about how the foods help you in your training (either as nutrition or reward), and confess to guilty pleasures and happy indulgences!

Hey Ohana! Anytime food is the subject, I'll be there!(Plus I have the day off)

For healthy choices, I would say that there is always at least 3-4 kinds of fruit in the house--bananas, grapefruit, strawberries (Thanks, Plant City, FL!)

For unhealthy choices (note the plural!) I would say my weakness is Cheddar Goldfish--darn Costco for selling them in the 56 oz box. Plus, my family HAS to have dessert, so there is always something around to tempt me.

I almost said "red wine & chocolate" for both, BTW.

I will say that I eat better on a work day than a non-work day. Simple reason? I only eat what I bring with me. So banana and/or other fruit, baby carrots, string cheese or yogurt and Lean Cusisine. That and plenty of water. I should probably parcel out food on weekends and do things the same way.

Maura

Morning Cousins!! Thanks for the invite. You know we love the Monday Mixer. :goodvibes

If you ask my kids EVERYTHING in my house is healthy. :lmao: My latest OMG moment was when the doctor came out after giving DD14 a physical a few weeks ago and said that she said the funniest thing. What's that I say. Doc says she asks DD if she eats healthy and her reply was "my mom makes me". :rolleyes1 Ha ha, no really....seriously am I that bad???

The healthiest thing in my kitchen...quinoa. If you have not tried it do. It is an ancient grain used by the Incas and carries more protein than oatmeal. I make quinoa bars, quinoa cookies, quinoa bread and yeah quinoa oatmeal. Love the stuff. Great consistency and more power punch.

Most unhealthy thing in my kitchen, probably Uncrustables. My kids love them and I have relented in a few things. Hey, its PB and J right and I don't have to make it or worry about all the jelly spillage that happens to my countertops when they do. Anything unhealthy is for the kids basically, Goldfish (although mine are whole grain), granola bars (not the ones I make), Uncrustables, apple juice, you get the picture. I figure if it is "semi" healthy and has some good ingredients the kids can have a compromise. Hey, I can't make them eat healthy all the time...:upsidedow

Hello 'Ohana Cousins! Hope everyone had a great Easter weekend :)

Let see I almost always have spring mix salad, chickpeas, steel cut oatmeal, apples, oranges, strawberries, baby carrots, frozen mixed veggies, green tea, low fat yogurt, liquid egg whites ... Making sure we eat them is entirely different :)

For the unhealthy stuff - bacon, jam, a carton of regular ice cream, Tim Tams, Swedish meatballs, kettle chips (somehow we made the switch from low fat popcorn)...

How does everyone feel about eggs? Healthy or unhealthy? I recently heard a radio interview with a stroke researcher who said that the cholesterol in an egg yolk was equivalent to an 8oz steak. He also went so far as to say that only terminally ill patients should be eating eggs. Hadn't heard that one before... :confused3

Lisa - Can you post or send me some of the quinoa recipes?

Maura - My family and DF's family is very big on dessert. It's a hard habit to break. I try to save the sweets for the weekend (as best as I can).

I suppose I could also say I always have quinoa in my house. But that would be misleading, as I bought it a year ago and haven't figured out what to do with it, so it remains unopened in my cupboard. Help! I'm intimated by my quinoa and at a loss on how to incorporate it into my diet! ;)

Healthy...let's go with oatmeal and ground flax seed and frozen blueberries. That's a breakfast staple here and the kids also love their oatmeal.

Unhealthy...I always have some kind of dessert. Always. For me, it's the skinny cow ice creams (cones, bars, sandwiches - whatever is on sale). For the DH and kids ice cream sandwiches, jello pudding, something. If kids eat their dinner with veggies, they get a dessert. I have a serious sweet tooth which I seem to be nurturing in the kids as well.

I also always have microwave fat free popcorn. Is that a healthy treat? Or a not so unhealthy treat. That's a daily snack for me.

Interested to hear some yummy healthy ideas to add to our meal plans! :thumbsup2

Good evening 'Ohana cousins. Just dropping by to let you know that Nancy gave me a good report yesterday!!! Her doctor's are so happy with her progress.....I knew she would do well!

I usually dedicate my 1/2 marathons to friends and family, and make it like a prayer run. At each mile marker I would say a little prayer for a chosen person in my life. My last 1/2 marathon was done for Nancy.

On today's run, I needed a little boost and received it with the song "I Run for Life" by Melissa Etheridge. So, as this song reminds me of Nancy, I ran for Nancy today.

So, in that spirit, I ran my own PR for 5 miles. I am donating my time and miles to Nancy, as I ran for her today.

5 miles
53:37

Happy Easter.

Beth

You are such a special person Beth and I will never be able to thank you enough for all you have done for me especially during my surgery and recovery.

I had never heard of that song before but those lyrics are very powerful. I can relate so well to the meaning that Melissa Etheridge was expressing when she is singing that song. It is just so sad that there are so many of us who have to travel down that road. However, I truely believe that it makes us much stronger women in the end. Thanks Beth for sharing.

As Beth said I am doing well. I will be 7 weeks post op this Wed. The plastic surgeon has allowed me to return to the gym doing light weights, elipical and TM. No pilates or spin class until after 8 weeks. So went today and did the elipical for 4 miles and then took a Silver & Fit class Stretch and Flex. There are a number of Silver & Fit classes during the daytime, so I think I will try to do several of them for the next 2 weeks. After that I will be back to work full time.

I have signed up to do the PINK race on 5/9. It is the local breast cancer group that is having a charity event. I didn't sign up to do the Susan Komen Race for the Cure that is in Philly on 5/10 because I was unsure how I would feel and since I am not at work I wouldn't have been able to do the fund raising. More than likely I will do the Maryland Susan Komen race in Oct.

That's all for now.

Nancy

Hey all you with quinoa questions, I am going to work on collecting some of my recipies and hopefully later this week, I will post them in their own separate thread. In the meantime, if you search quinoa recipies you will get tons.

I have one for a super quickie oatmeal in the morning that you can start when you get in the shower and by the time you are done, piping hot quinoameal!!! I will also try to find the one I use for muffins!!:goodvibes

Hi Cousins!

Healthy food in my kitchen: Oatmeal, yogurt, ***'t fruits

Unhealthy food: Popcorn cooked in oil, wine, Weight Watchers Carrot Cakes

My DH is leaving to go out of town on Wednesday, and while he is gone, I plan to cook HEALTHY food for me! I bought one of the cook books from the Biggest Loser and have several WW recipes that I want to try. One that will definitely get made is a WW recipe for grilled salmon. DH does not like salmon so I fix this every time he goes out of town! ;)

I would also like to give the quinoa recipes.

Hey Team Ohana,
The healthy food I always have is some type of fruit (usually apples). To me, fruit doesn't even taste like its healthy so thats why I always have some on hand. As for unhealthy, I usually have bread crumbs to bread chicken or fish. I think thats unhealthy. I guess some people might consider beer unhealthy, but ill argue to the death otherwise.

Is quinoa the stuff they serve at Boma for breakfast? If it is, then I am definately getting some. That stuff was fantastic. I'll look forward to the recipe thread.

Steve

Always have bananas, oranges or tangerines, sunflower seeds, cashews,or almonds ~ junk food could be anything from pretzels to ice cream....

Isn't that what they call a "Balanced Diet " ?

Jack

Hi Ohana!

I have been trying to reduce the number of unhealthy foods that beckon to me. Thinking about it, though, I have all kinds of stuff around still, most "for the kids." The Girl Scout Cookies are here right now. In the "not for the kids" department, I also have plenty of bourbon, beer and other spirits in the house.

Healthy food I always have: Whole grain bread, pasta, tortillas, 2% cheese, lentils and beans, egg beaters, fruit including apples, bananas and whatever is in season, Amy's bean and cheese burritos and my personal fave: Frozen vegetables. :woohoo:

A spring chick told me that many of us gave up goodies for Lent. Now that Lent has ended, Monday is a good time for this mixer question:

What is one healthy food you always have in your kitchen? What is one less-than-healthy food you always have in your kitchen?
Yes, I was one of those that "spring chick" must have known about...I hope she's doing well after Easter. I gave up sugary sweets for Lent, which proved to be easier than in some past years to do. As a bonus, I apparently lost about 10 lbs as well. Fortunately, yesterday's return to eating sweets did not get out of control, but that peanut butter-filled bunny was good!!!

I pretty often have fruit (bananas, apples, blueberries) around some vanilla yougurt to mix them with--usually for breakfast, although I sometimes cheat and grab something less healthy from Chick-Fil-A or Panera on the way to work instead. The last couple of weeks has included more cheating than normal, so I am trying to get back on track with breakfast. I also love to snack on pretzels (low-fat).
My downfall is the cookies and brownies my DW loves to cook, and she is very good at it!

Let's see. The topic is about healthy and unhealthy choices.

My healthy choices would include chicken, fish, turkey, fruits, vegetables and yogurt. (I have more but these are the standards for each and every day.)

My unhealthy choices would include toaster struedels, soups and some chips for those rare ocassions that I feel like I have been a good boy and deserve an award.

Honestly, I don't cheat a lot. This week, I am on a binge a little just because I just finished my half and I wanted to award myself for a week. After that, I will go back to being pretty strict on what I allow myself to take in. It's just a mindset for me now and I don't desire the unhealthy foods the way I used too. (Kinda scares me a little!)

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Alleuia! I am back and finally am up to date with all the past posts. It's been a rough couple of weeks. Nothing serious, just all the little annoying things that keep you from having any free time. Can't believe I actually made it to a Monday mixer on time!

The good stuff I always have on hand is lots of fresh fruit, broccoli, yogurt, walnuts and course cut oatmeal.
Not having kids at home makes it alot easier to not bring snack food into the house, but I always seem to have popcorn, frozen pizza and all types of fresh, frozen and refrigerated potatoes. My freezer is like a shrine to Ore-Ida. As long as you add some peppers and onions to fried hash browns, they can be considered a vegetable. You can keep your ice-cream and sweets. I'm a sucker for a potato every time.

Deb: I know you're a movie buff and I saw a good one this weekend.....but only if you like John Malkovich, of whom I am a huge fan. "The Great Buck Howard" is pretty much all J.M. with some interesting support from Colin and Tom Hanks in a father/son reprise. Even John enjoyed it and he NEVER likes the movies I choose!
I'm also a big Tudor fan. I haven't had the chance to watch any of the new series, but can access them whenever I want On Demand
Hope you're all finished with your check-ups and everything is OK. I have one more with a cardiologist this week. So far, so good.

Richard: sounds like you had a wonderful experience meeting Laura Wilkinson. I loved the photos and it was so nice of her to let you pose with her medal. Many years ago my daughter who was a swimmer met Josh ???? (can't remember the last name but he was a gold medalist on the US relay team)
He also let all the kids pose with his medal and I was very impressed, but also curious. I barely let people touch my Mickey medal and we know how many of those are floating around! Do you think that maybe they are able to obtain a duplicate that they use for traveling and speaking engagements? Does anybody know?
Kudos on the fabulous weight loss! That is an amazing amount......good job!:thumbsup2

Corinna: hope your kids are recovering from strep and life is getting back to normal.

Mel: Lola is adorable and she does look like Jackie's dog (judging from the photos I've seen) Love all the song references! :rotfl:

Bubba: so nice to have you visit us so faithfully. I had always had a huge fear of water, but when I turned 50 I decided I was going to learn how to swim no matter what. I took lessons at my local Y and even though I am incredibly slow and my form leaves much to be desired, I did it! In fact several years ago I successfully completed a "swim a marathon" challenge. we had to swim 26.2 miles over the course of about 6 weeks! It would take me over an hour to swim each mile, but I did it. I even learned to put my face in the water, which was HUGE for me. The "prize" turned out to be a plastic bottle that cost about 50 cents, and I was a little PO'd at that, but it still doesn't diminish my accomplishment. I will never be comfortable in open water, but I'm like Nemo in a pool. If I can do it, anyone can, so never say never! Compared to all the amazing things you've already accomplished, swimming will be a cinch.

To all my other Ohana cousins and party guests: :flower3:

Hello, everyone! I'm just getting back into posting, catching up and all. More details tomorrow, for today is the mixer. And I really need a drink.

Special thanks for all the Easter wishes!

As for me: So many things you all mentioned are things that are always in my house, both healthy and not so healthy.

Healthy: Oatmeal, yogurt, whole grains, a variety of fruits and veggies, nuts and beans, flax seed. We also have wheat germ in the house all the time. And broccoli, which I don't like but eat a lot of because it's another one of those superfoods.

Not so healthy: I know this will come as no surprise to any of you, but there's always liquor (bourbon, whisky, scotch) in the household and chocolate. What MAY suprise you is that we haven't had ice cream since February. In the house or outside it. It's apparently the ONE thing that makes DOOD gain weight. I can make cookies, brownies, muffins. I can give him chocolate bars and cocktails. Nothing. But ice cream. So not in the house right now, as he's not been very active. Never mind that the other things make ME gain weight... :rotfl2:

And responses!

Beth: Thank you for stopping by with that song. I love it, and love that you used to it motivate your run and think of Nancy. "I Run for Life" is a regular on my playlist, too, and have adopted it as a personal mantra for similar reasons. :goodvibes I agree with Nancy--you're one of the best people I know.

Nancy: I love that you're back in the groove with things. The PINK event sounds like fun! You really must pick up that song--spurs me on, every time. I'll get back to you in more detail later.

Maura: Wine and chocolate are definitely healthy, and all alcohol medicinal. At least in my mind. Big fruit person here, too. Although I tend to be in a bananas, apples, grapes rut. I'm really looking for new fruits to try. For instance, I do like pomegranates--but I'm sooooo lazy. And a big nod of my head for the difference in eating at work vs. unstructured weekends. Your idea for how to handle it is genius for its simplicity and effectiveness. I just tend not to do it.

Lisa: I like quinoa--it's a superfood--and would love to see more recipes to try. I'm not much of a cook, but all your suggestions have been wonderful. And we're in a muffin kick in this household. :thumbsup2 Oh, and as a kid I might have resented you a little (just a little) but really would have been secretly proud of how much you looked out for me. And then would be totally in awe of you as an adult. :worship:

Vicky: Lots of things in your kitchen are in mine. Mmmmm, chickpeas. What are Tim Tams, though? Sounds interesting, if for no other reason than I don't know what they are! And your research on eggs is beginning to scare me a little.... :lmao:

JenniferG: Oooh, I love oatmeal and flaxseed for breakfast. I use raisins, though. Daily, as I don't mind a food rut if it's a favorite food. So, Skinny Cow is good? I'm an ice-cream addict who's unsuccessfully trying to break the habit. And I personally think popcorn is a healthy treat if eaten in moderation. Which means for me....not so much.

Mary: First of all--your abbreviation for assorted fruits getting censored is too, too funny. :rotfl2: (Almost as funny as how long it took for me to figure it out.) And I'm with Maura...wine can be good for you. Slurp. I also understand how hard it can be to cook healthy when taking another person into account, so yay for you having the opportunity to enjoy salmon. :woohoo:

Steve: I think you should get a big thumbs up for eating as well as you do on a college budget. I remember being in undergrad and all the back foods seemed so much less expensive, unless I was okay with eating a lot of rice dishes. (And to my mind back then, too much like Ramen Noodles.... :rotfl2:) And this:
I guess some people might consider beer unhealthy, but ill argue to the death otherwise.
:rotfl::rotfl: Not a beer drinker, but LOVE the sentiment.

Jack: Mmmm, nuts and seeds! Like you, I embrace my inner squirrel. I especially like nuts and pretzels IN my ice cream, along with chocolate. For that balanced diet you speak of. :rolleyes1 And obviously, you and Steve are kindred spirits.

Corinna: The GS cookies support the trooplets, and you know that makes Aloha Jeff happy. You're doing great, and I like a good Amy's convenience food for the, well, convenience. And you know WE are kindred spirits on the spirits.

Richard: First, big congrats on the 10 pounds lost! That's fabulous! :yay: I think you can get healthy foods from both Chik-Fil-A and Panera, can't you? I know the former has nothing over 500 calories on the menu. And while Panera does, at least many options seem healthier to me. You know, if you ever decide you want to get rid of the goody temptations at home, just send your DW to visit me. I wouldn't mind someone making me brownies and cookies. ;)

Bryan: You're here so early today! :dance3: Love, love, love the yogurt. Daily. Why are your soups unhealthy? Must be really tasty, maybe cream-based? And congrats once again on your PR for the half. I need to track down the RR and check it out, but you rocked it.

Jeanne: Mmmm, walnuts. Those are another superfood. I'm trying to incorporate more of those into my diet--supposed to be good for joint pain. I do have a weakness for hash browns, left over from my college-drinking days (a hangover cure if I ever had one), so I have to stay away from them. With hot sauce. Double mmmmm. :cloud9: On more personal notes--I definitely need to watch Buck Howard; it's on my list, so thanks for the heads-up. And WTG with your doctor's appointments. I have to call tomorrow and get some results and have my next one scheduled for early May. Those pesky doctors will get us on regular schedules yet, won't they? How is your training and pain?

I put soups down as an unhealthy substance for two reasons. 1) Typically, you will eat soup with crackers and most crackers are of a white flower base and that is no good. 2) If you read the label, soups have a ton of sodium which of course leads to water retention. I know they are low in fat but they are high in the sodium and low in protein and I would rather reverse that if at possible.

Jeanne Thank you but I really haven't accomplished all that much. Or at least not as much as you think. And don't get me wrong about water. I love being in the water. I just can't handle water above my head. Just let me stay in the shallow end and I am all good. BTW:Take care of the feet. Hopefully, the pain will subside soon.

Thanks everyone!
Bryan
