Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Hi Cousins!

That was some party we had the other day! I'm already looking forward to the next one! :thumbsup2

Corinna - Slow loris or not, you're becoming the Queen of XT! :cool1:

Maria - Good for you, giving up treats for Lent. :thumbsup2 I haven't decided on what to give up yet, I guess I better hurry up and decide! Congrats on your powerpoint presentation. I must admit that I loved Excel, charts, Powerpoint, etc. back in the day when I worked in an office. I'm such a nerd.

Jeanne - I love your telemarketer story. I'll have to remember that one for the next annoying call I get. :rotfl2: Also, thanks for the Nancy update. Please continue to keep us posted.

Donna: I do the same thing with "Circle of Life" from The Lion King. The chorus sounds like "pink pajama, pink pajama bottoms" to me. So that's how I sing it!
Julie: I used to love Squeeze. Now all I can think is about lettuce abuse. Oh, you've got an evil mind, you do, when it comes to working with DOOD's guilt. As long as it works in my favor--say, helping me convince DOOD to invest in DVC--I'm happy. Otherwise, you scare me. :scared1: :rotfl2:

Debra - I had to laugh at your "Circle of Life" comment because just recently, my kids were singing the chorus as "Pink pajama, penguin of Obama." At least they got the first part "right." Please don't be scared of my evil-ness. I only use it for good, if that makes any sense. :confused3 By the way, if you can't guilt DOOD into buying DVC, do you want me to beat him up with some lettuce? :rotfl:

As for me, I've had a cold since the weekend. I haven't had a cold in years, so this is really throwing me for a loop. I haven't run all week as a result (well, that and icy sidewalks the other day), but I'm hoping to get out for 3 miles in the morning.

Hello to Jackie, Jen, JenB, Richard, Mel, Robert, and all of the other cousins! Have a great week, everyone! :goodvibes

I saw Nancy in the recovery room around 3:00. She was awake, and talked to me ((((even though I was bawling!))))). She made sure to ask ME, if I was ok.......she is the one was in surgery for 8 hours. I was very stress from worry, and when I saw her I just cried. She was having a little pain, but she was handling it well.

She just got to her room ( the unit I used to work before working with Nancy) and they are taking good care of her. I will stop in later to check on her.

Beth

Beth, thanks for the update. Please let Nancy know that all of her cousins here are thinking of her. :grouphug:

Beth -- :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: For you and Nancy!I know this has been quite a day. And you only ate 1 cookie! I am so proud of you! :cheer2:

Thank you for letting us know how Nancy is. I've been worrying about you, and her and Jeanne.

Hang in there, Ladies! :goodvibes

Maria

Thanks for the update, Beth! I'm glad everything is over. Now all she has to do is get better....hopefully quickly!

John and I just did 4 miles......uh, they were pretty ugly! :scared1: I was going as fast as my fat little body could go and it was pretty slow. Needless to say, this PH is going to be interesting. But I have thought up a new mantra and hopefully that will get me through it: "Gotta beat the Greek, gotta beat the Greek!"

Maria: I DID give up something for Lent this year...and it's a first for me: No boozing (except on Sunday!) until Easter. I was going to make it "except Sundays and when I'm at WDW", but I thought God wouldn't be too happy with that!

Okay, I am back. I ran into the hospital to check on Nancy in her room. She is all set right now, but they will have to get her out of bed later (ugh!). She is hanging in there! I will let you know that you all are thinking of her.

I wish I could say that I stopped at one cookie......well, I had a run in with a pizza delivery man (who I called!). My kids were really happy with the delivery, but alas......I ate pizza for dinner too! I am now ready to get on my treadmill for a 3 miler......and I will regret the pizza the whole way! I already confessed it to Nancy!

Beth

Thank you, thank you, Beth and Jeanne for keeping us up to date with Nancy's progress. I just got back from a movie--He's Just Not That Into You, believe it or not--because I needed to get out of the house. I was dwelling on things, not the least of which was Nancy's surgery. It's so good to come back to this good news. :grouphug:

Jeanne and Beth: Extra hugs to you. Thank you for being there for Nancy and Norm. Please remember to take care of yourselves, too.

Jeanne: You know you need a t-shirt that says "Beat the Greek." :rotfl2: Running Banana makes custom tech t-shirts, although perhaps not in time for this race. No booze except on Sundays? Wowsa.

Julie: Hey, wanna use your evil sensibilities to come up with the next mixer question. (Hint, hint.) Good luck with tomorrow's run. I hope you're feeling good enough to enjoy it and the "spring is in the air" weather.

Hi Team! Quick check in and then I'll go back a few pages and catch up. I was good about checking in daily at first, but then I slipped and got busy . . . and sick. Serves me right. I had just bragged last week that my entire family has been healthy for months! Sure enough, I picked up a stomach bug that knocked me out all weekend. I slept or lounged on the couch all weekend. There was a payoff for all of that rest though. I felt better on Monday and I went for a strong run (for me) AND had a wonderful, strong BodyPump workout on Monday night. I felt GREAT! And, no one else in the house got sick.

I thought I was through the woods and then I woke up today with something going on with my sinuses. I should have never jinxed myself, huh? None the less, I made it to spinning class tonight and spun my little legs off. :woohoo: For whatever reason, heavy cardio exercise totally clears out my sinuses (I had to keep my towel handy to keep wiping my nose). Unfortunately, I'm all stuffed up again.

Speaking of Spinning, I am participating in a Spinning Nation event on Saturday morning. :) We had to raise money for Athletes for a Cure and The Lance Armstrong Foundation. The event is basically a 60 minute class. Should be fun, but due to the economy, we don't have a ton of interest and the fund raising totals have been low. :sad2: Oh well, something is better than nothing at all! I got my tee shirt tonight and it's very cool.

Not much else new. I need to get a race scheduled because my motivation to run has been dismal. It's sad that I need to be registered for an event in order to stay motivated to run, but that's just the way it is for me.

Off to catch up!

Hi Ohana!

Sorry I missed your Merry Mixer on Monday. Just wanted to pop in and say hi and it looks like you have a great team! Keep training!

Good Morning, Team Ohana!

I did another 4 mi this morning. I'm looking forward to my rest day tomorrow, and then I have 6 on tap for Sat.

I did great with Day One of Treatless Time. I even skipped the Skinny Cow and jello. ::yes::

Kerry -- So sorry to hear you've been ill. The Spinning event sounds awesome! I've never tried it, but it looks like a fabulous workout :thumbsup2

Beth -- Considering your workouts, I think you can not completely beat yourself up over pizza once! I know you feel guilty, but considering the stress you've been under, I think you handled yourself admirably. It's not what you do one day that will determine your success, it's what you do most days :wizard:

Jeanne -- I am so impressed you gave up alcohol, especially considering the WDW trip! That's huge

Julie -- ah, that's why you fit in so well around here! We are quite the nerdy little family, and I say that with massive love  I hope you're feeling better.

Debra -- How romantic that you and DOOD are going to be reading a book together! It's fantastic that he knows the way to your heart is really through your brain!

JenB -- How's that motivation going? Any slowdown in the patient load at work? :flower3:

Know what I have going through my head right now? "Pink pajama, penguin of Obama, Pink Pajama, Penguin of Obama" -- thanks, Julie :rolleyes1 ;)

Hello to the quiet Cousins -- they say it's always the quiet ones... :lmao:

Everyone have an awesome day, and a fantastic weekend! :cheer2:

Maria :upsidedow

DOOD's Information

Real-Life Name: Mark
Location: Pittsburgh
Family/Household: Debra (deekaypee) and the cats
Age: 41
Day Job: English Professor

Describe your running/walking/biking/swimming/XT background: I began running about ten years ago as a way to stave off aging and keep active while in graduate school. I ran for several years before I started running 5Ks, then 10Ks, and eventually half marathons and marathons. I enjoy biking and swimming and would like to try a triathlon one day.
What accomplishments are you most proud of in 2008? (WISH related or otherwise)
Finishing the Goofy without permanent damage. Getting a PR, barely, at the Cleveland Marathon in May.
What are your WISH goals for 2009?
I hope to run another marathon or two. A running partner has tempted me with an ultramarathon and I have not ruled it out. Yet.

Planned events for 2009/2010? (Event, place, date, distance)
  • Pittsburgh Marathon as part of a relay, 3 May 2009
  • The Pittsburgh Race for the Cure 10 May 2009
  • The Dopey, January 2010

What do you do for fun (besides DIS)? I like films, reading, and listening to jazz
Favorite DIS-friendly curse word. (With apologies to James Lipton.) Horsefeathers
In the soundtrack of your life, your theme song would be…. “Linus & Lucy” by Vince Guaraldi

Interesting fact or anecdote about yourself. Blackmail-able stories are welcomed!
I’d like to send a shout out to a runner whose name I don’t know, but whose appearance is familiar to many of us. He helped me overcome the searing heat of the Chicago Marathon in 2007. And he helped me push through the wall during my first Goofy in 2008.

It was so hot in Chicago that people just stopped running and passed out. I was drinking like a sailor on shore leave but still dehydrating. My eyes smarted with the salty sweat running off my brow. I saw him ahead of me, moving at an easy pace, smiling, the sun glistening off his nearly naked body like a seal on a beach. Waving at the spectators. He looked at me with a mixture of calm and shamelessness. Shocked by the expression, I picked up my pace and left him behind. I finished the race just a few minutes before the course was closed.

I thought I would not seem him again. Indeed, after the race I wondered if I had really seen him. But around the eighteenth mile of the Disney marathon in 2008, having run the half marathon the previous day harder than I should have, I saw him again. Ahead, at the top of a slight rise I saw the sun glint off his skin and recognized his upright gait. As I got closer I knew I had not hallucinated in Chicago. Here he was again, his swimsuit tight around his loins, like a rubberband on a water balloon. Once again I felt inspired to pick up the pace, pass him and remove him from my field of vision. I finished the race and never looked back.

Perhaps you too have seen him and been similarly inspired. If not, perhaps one day you will see him and he will help you as he helped me. If you do see him, do me a favor and say “Thanks Speedo guy!” for me.

Hi Cousins... SERIOUSLY.... why doesn't anyone ever track me down and kick my BEHIND!!!

I've been sickkkkkk tho. The kids brought some gunk home and I ended up with a sinus infection. I still kept working out tho... 3 times last week with being sick! How is that for a miracle!!!

Tomorrow starting at 6pm I am going to an all night hobby night... 6pm to 6am. There will be A LOT of snacks there!!!

I missed the mixer too... I feel so left out!!! Oh poor pitiful me!

I am so glad I check in tho and heard about Nancy. I am glad it went well! DD's teacher for next year is undergoing a mastectomy next week.

HAVE A GREAT OHANA WEEK!!!

The days keep slipping away from me. My mom is here visiting for the weekend, to see the kids, the crazy dog, and Cabaret. The snow was TERRIBLE today for my trip to the airport, but we survived it. Whew.

I had to write tonight mostly because I wanted to let DOOD know that I was passed by Speedo Guy in the half marathon! He was WAY faster than I was and was out of sight almost as soon as he was past, but the older woman I was running near at the time said "Well! That will be a nice view for a minute!" :rotfl:

Keeping Nancy in my heart and mind - it's good to know how she's doing. Take care, Beth, and give Nancy a :grouphug: from her Ohana.

Hello cousins. I was more hungover from the mixer than I knew :lmao:

This was a really long week for me. Usually I have Fridays off so I can breathe and regroup but I have a meeting this afternoon and call tonight so I guess the relaxing will have to come tomorrow. I hope everyone is doing well.

I wanted to send out more :grouphug: for Nancy.

As for me, my motivation has not greatly improved but I'm in taper mode for the Princess so I've been able to manage to get the miles in. I can't believe the race is in only one week :scared1: . Here's hoping that my "just enough to get by" training will carry me through and let me meet my time goal.

Have a great weekend everyone.

Aloha!

Sorry I was missing for awhile. Went to WDW for a few days and then the DCL Eastern. I did run and exercise (including run along the boardwalk area and 5k on Castaway Cay!) but unfortunately also gained about 5 pounds. So now it's time to get back to my routine.

An abundance of wishes for complete health and wellness to Nancy! :wizard:

I'm still behind on this thread, but just wanted to check in and say hi.

Nancy sends her love to the O'hana cousins! She is doing well, and has even taken a little walk today! She will not go home until at least Sunday, but she is being a very good patient. She is handling all this with grace, I must say.

I will let you know when she gets home!

Beth

Hellooooo, cousins! Just a reminder that TOMORROW is the last day of the month, so have a great training day and then report those miles & minutes here. If you're not reporting miles & minutes, no worries. Also, remember that you can plug your individual totals into your siggie--you're all doing so well that you've earned your bragging rights and I encourage you to show off. If you prefer, I can put your individual monthly total next to your name on the roster. Just let me know.

A big shout-out to Denny, who's participating in the ESPN 5K tomorrow! Rock it! :cheer2:

Jackie, are you doing the Crystal Coast 1/2 tomorrow? I know it was very tentative for you. If so, you'll rock yours too!

And Kerry, your Spinning Nation fundraising events sounds amazing! You'll have to give us all the details! I'm adding it to our calendar of events--we like to encourage charity events here and this sounds fabulous! :woohoo:

And a shout-out to DOOD too, even though he doesn't read here (I think). I don't know if any of you noticed, but not only did he fill out his bio (with the beloved Speedo Guy story), but he used his real name on a discussion board. I never thought he'd do it. Come to the dark side, he has. :darth:

Thank you, Beth, for the update on Nancy. That's good, good news. I hope you're feeling better about the cookie/pizza incident. You did so well under the circumstances, much better than I think I would have.

We're all thinking of you Nancy, and hoping for a speedy recovery. (You sound like you've got that covered.) :flower3: And I can't imagine you being anything other than a strong, model patient.

Julie: I've often commented I have Peter Pan syndrome, so it's no surprise that me and your kids are so alike. I've been thinking Penguin of Obama for days now.

Jeanne: How are you feeling about the upcoming Princess?

Kerry: Welcome back, and I hope your stomach bug and sinus infection (?) are gone for good. Heavy cardio does the same thing for me--I love the way my body conspires to keep me active even when I want to take a sick day. :rolleyes1 Big, big congrats in advance on your Spinning Nation success! Be sure to give us a RR (or equivalent.) What races are you thinking of signing up for--and how do you have time with all the relocation planning??!! :scared1:

Erica: Remember, next Mixer is Monday. Stop on by! Oh, and in case I don't remember to make it to your team thread right beforehand, good luck on your first TRI! :cool1:

Maria: Congrats on day one (and day two) of your Treatless Time. (Sounds like a really bland tea, doesn't it?) You even went without a Skinny Cow. :worship:Good luck with tomorrow's 6 miler! You're so sweet to mention DOOD's book-reading plan as a way my heart. Me, though, I'd be more interested in he could figure out ways to my body. :rotfl2:

Jen: Okay, you've now given us permission to track you down and drag you back to some time with your cousins. Apparently, this place isn't like my family reunions.... :rotfl: I'm so sorry to learn of everything that's going on in your life, the illnesses and your dog. Stay strong, and away from those snacks. Save your calories for the Monday Mixer. How's your weight-loss goals coming? (See, I'm dragging you back in!)

Corinna: Wow, busy, busy, busy. So, is your mom interested in seeing things in that order? I'm willing to bet she's more interested in Cabaret than the kids. ;)

JenB: Good luck with tapering for the Princess half! I hope you get a chance to relax a little this weekend, especially since you'll be running around all week to run next weekend. I'm sure you'll have a great race, what with it being the inaugural, at Disney, etc. DH is running this one, too, right? Is he wearing a tiara?

Jennifer: Welcome back! Your trip sounds fantastic AND delicious. (Or is that magically delicious?) Always a sign of good food when you run AND gain weight on a trip. And you're right back on track with the eating. :thumbsup2 Pictures are always welcome of your shenanigans.

Robert & Linda: I hope everything is going as well with you as can be expected. (See, no details! :teeth:)

Mel: How are you holding up, with the the half-marathoning, the new class, etc. Is it spring break for you soon, at the least? And I hope you're still caffeine-free, although that would officially eliminate you from having any chance of being one of my favorite drinks.

Marcy: Hoping to hear from you soon--how's training going? Is you DD feeling better?

Christa: I know you're busy, busy, busy with work, but how's your training going? Looking forward to seeing how your biking goals are progressing now that you've achieved your sub-4 marathon goal with such style!

Kathy: Have we scared you away? (It's only me who's scary. Everyone else is frightening normal.) I know that's not really possible, because you've got to be brave to sign up for the Goofy! Or crazy. So you really do fit in here. (And did you get my PM about the spreadsheet?)

Richard: All caught up with the Ender series? Waiting to discuss it with you and Maria! And how is the tri training coming? Is there one leg of the event you're really hoping to hit hard?

As for me: Spring break is upon us here, but we're not going anywhere. :sad2: It's probably for the best, not only economically but because I don't fit into my "resort wear" at this point. :rotfl2: (Laughing at the resort wear, not my current weight.) This must change. Corinna, I managed to lose nothing this month--which shows my insufficient commitment to change--but would like to seriously plan on weight loss in March. Will you keep track for 'Ohana? If so, I'm down for 5 pounds. I'll check in on Fridays, like you suggested.

I've only been doing the Self Challenge for a couple of days and, let me tell you, it's been kicking my booty. Okay, not the booty but the shoulders and the abs. Apparently I've really been prioritizing the running and not been working very hard at my core or upper body.

Oh, in other news. Can we generate a list of where people are staying for marathon weekend if they've made plans?
  • Mel, you're OKW, right?
  • Richard, the Treehouse Villas?
  • JenB, is it the Beach Club, or don't you use DVC for that weekend?
  • Jeanne, are you doing the Poly this year?
  • Who am I missing?

Last but not least, another Mixer on Monday. Who wants to come up with the discussion prompt. Unless you want me to do it, and I'll be forced to ask people to describe their favorite underwear.

Howdy cousins!

Jeanne - I love your new mantra! I know you'll have a great time at the Princess and you will beat the Greek! :cheer2:

Kerry - I hope you're feeling better. :goodvibes

Debra - I loved DOOD's story. Not sure if it was the same guy, but I recall seeing a guy in a Speedo during the marathon this year. Could there be more than one? I hope not. :scared1: And don't worry, you're not alone with your Peter Pan syndrome. I have it too. I think that's why I get along with my kids so well - we all play together.

Maria - How's the no treat thing going? I really admire you for doing that. :worship: I don't think I could do it. Are you ready for more snow? :sad2:

Jen - Sorry to hear that you were sick, but great that you got your work outs in, even when you weren't feeling well. :thumbsup2

Corinna - Did your mom have a nice visit? I'm sorry to hear that you got more snow. We just got rid of all of the snow here and now they're forecasting a storm for tomorrow and possibly another one on Monday.

Jen B - Good luck with the Princess Half. I look forward to your RR! :thumbsup2

Jen G - It sounds like you had a nice vacation. :)

Beth - Thanks for the update on Nancy. Please continue to keep us posted. :goodvibes

As for me, my cold is gone and I ran my 4 miles faster than usual today. Not super fast, but fast for me. I also lost 4 lbs this month, which I am very happy about. DH & I are going out to dinner tonight, and the place we're going to is supposed to have amazing desserts. I hope I don't gain the 4 lbs back in one night.

As for Monday, I have a suggestion for the discussion. I'd love to know how everyone passes the time on long runs/walks (other than listening to music). If DH & I do the marathon in Jan, we won't be able to train together for the most part, so I'll have some long runs to do on my own. I'd love to hear everyone's tips for passing the time.

Have a great week, everyone! :goodvibes

Shout-out to the cousins...What's your #1 fitness goal for March?

Wow, slow weekend here! I hope it's because of all the activity we're squeezing in over the last few days of the month and not because my deodorant stopped working. :rotfl2:

Julie: You asked for the mixer question, you got it! Actually, I asked for it, but we'll pretend otherwise. I think that's an excellent prompt that will help lots of us....now I just have to pretend I don't listen to music or TV on my LRs.... (I do my LRs on a TM.) And in more immediate news, big congratulations on your speedy 4 miles and a 4-pound loss. What a great way to end the month. I know your dessert was tasty, but couldn't have tasted as good as success.

Other news: I received a bunch of temporary WISH tattoos from Aloha Jeff. They're about 1" x 1" and would look really great on the face, the back of the hand, a shoulderblade..... If anyone would like some, whether for the upcoming Princess or another race, just PM me. I think I have about 60, so feel free to ask!

The Monday Mixer will use Julie's question for training alone without a partner and sans (or beside) music, so come prepared to discuss your strategies!

Looking forward to reading the RR from Denny and maybe Jackie, and hearing about Kerry's Spinning nation.

Nancy: I hope you're headed home soon!

Mel:  to you on your training and running blues. It sounds like you're having a rough time of it, from what you said on the miles & minutes reporting thread. I'm sure you'll have a great time at the Princess. :woohoo:
Especially if you and JenB (and Butch) hook up!

As for me: It's spring break here and DOOD is jealously guarding my free time. Isn't that sweet in a kind of creepy way? We visited the Monongahela Incline today. It was a little chilly, but we enjoyed the Pgh view. And it's something both natives and tourists do, but we hadn't managed to squeeze in, so we feel a little less like outsiders. As for Middlemarch, it's a slow start--maybe I'm just an Austen-ite.

For the rest of the week we hope to do a bunch of outdoors, fitnessy kind of things. I just bought DOOD his first Garmin (the 405) now that the watch finally has Mac support, and he's learning to play with it. (Any tips?) Not sure what we'll do, as we don't run together, and DOOD's knees are bothering him these days. Maybe some trail hiking in Frick Park.

Hello cousins!

Just popping in to say "hi". We had houseguests from NJ that arrived Friday and just left a few hours ago so this is my first time on the computer in over 2 days. I am trying very hard to get them to sign up for the half in January. I know thay can do it, but they are so scared. I also know they would love the experience if they would just take the plunge and give it a shot. We shall see......

I am a little spooked about the upcoming PH. I had some foot issues after the full and that was one of the reasons I cut back on my training. I wanted to make sure I was fully healed. Well, I did 4 miles last week and now I am walking with a limp again! I think I may need to have it checked out.......AFTER next weekend. Afterall, I gotta beat the Greek! The good news is I found an utterly ridiculous princess crown made of bright pink foam rubber at Michaels. I think it was a dollar so I couldn't pass it up. I recently learned that my bib will be pink because I chose Sleeping Beauty. John's will be purple because I selected Snow White for him. I asked him if he wanted a bright purple foam rubber crown, but he said he'd pass on it.

Deb: loved the story about Speedo man. It sounds like he's a real nice guy and now I feel bad for snickering about him.;) Just one concern: Wherever does he pin his bib?!?
I do have some miles and minutes for February (mostly from cross-training) and I will tally and report tomorrow. Thanks so much for doing this for our team! :flower3:

Beth: thanks for keeping us updated.

Everyone else: :wave2:
