Team 'Ohana 2009: No One Left Behind

Aloha, Cousins!

Well, I'll either be around alot tomorrow or not much...as Julie alluded, we are supposed to get 6-12 inches in the early morning. Boston Public already cancelled (which doesn't do me any good, ds's school marches to the beat of their own drummer, and it isn't in Boston, anyway...). But, either way I think I have to go to work. If we do get pummeled, not many people will make it in, so I will have time to Mix! If we don't, I'll be working like last week :sad1:

I did 6 mi yesterday, but I think I went too fast. I took 20 minutes off my previous time. That's partly because I was going pretty slow last week, and partly because I think I blew out my lungs this week. Let's just say I'm planning on a slower time next weekend, and not feeling like I can't get enough oxygen for the rest of the afternoon  Today I did a quick 30 min on the bike.

I had exactly one student in Sunday School this morning. She got a great lesson, and she told me I was "fun" when it was over, so that made it worth it. We had the start of snow and it was messy, so I'm not surprised attendance was so low. Then again, ds's class had 5 kids :confused3 I have 4 more weeks to teach, then my quarter will be over. I do enjoy it, but it means dh misses some races he'd like to do on Sunday mornings. I have 1st-3rd grade, which is great because they can read, but they still listen to you. :thumbsup2

Debra -- My number one fitness goal for March is consistency ::yes::. I'm doing great with Lent, so I just have to keep the workouts going at this pace. I've settled in to biking Sun. (it's stationary, so I'm not going anywhere), 4 mi Mon., Wed., and Thurs., 3 mi + yoga Tues., rest Fri. and 6 mi Sat. I want to do that for the entire month, and then I'll see about changing it up. Your Spring Break sounds lovely. I am definitely an Austenite. DH laughs at me because anytime I'm spooling through the channels and find Pride and Prejudice on any PBS channel, I immediately stop and watch it, no matter where they are in the story. I have to say I am partial to Colin Firth's Mr. Darcy....:flower3:

Julie -- I'm actually doing well with Treatless Time. It was really hard last night. Saturday seems like a time for snacks and goodies. But I resisted...DH went to BJ's and stocked up on fruit, so I have a really yummy selection at hand. I just reach for that when I'm wishing for a treat. :cutie: It's working so far. We just got the automated message there's no school tomorrow -- I'm going to have DH drop me off after he clears out the driveway, unless it's too dangerous. I don't really want to go, but there's a meeting I shouldn't miss -- which with my luck will be cancelled, anyway...Arrrgh! 4lbs is awesome! Ok, where is this great dessert place? After Easter I am going to need a treat, and I don't mean a Friendly's ice cream roll! :rotfl:

JenG -- I can't wait to hear about your fabulous vacation! Like everyone else, I :lovestruc Castaway Cay!

Beth -- I hope Nancy is feeling better each day. It sounds like she's doing really well, and I know you are keeping a close eye on her! :magnify:

JenB -- Is the excitement building for the Princess yet? Have you started packing? Are you wearing anything "princessy"? princess:

Corinna -- I hope the visit with your mom was awesome! It's great that she could come to see your family and the show! I'm sure she was bursting with pride! :yay:

Jen -- Ok, I guess we won't have to send out that search party after all. All night hobby night sounds like a blast! :tilt:

I'm WISHing all the cousins a wonderful week! Let's get going on those March goals and kick winter to the curb! pirate:

Oops! Forgot to disclose the location of Clan Davis for marathon weekend -- We'll be at POR this year! I'll wave to Richard as we go by in the boats!

Maria :laundy:

So many posts to catch up on, so little time to write my own post.

Debra - I am confirmed for the Treehous VIllas for marathon week, although some of my family may leave early...so I might downsize later on when plan are better known. As far as the Ender series I started Shadow Puppets today and should finish by next weekend (or tonight, if I forego sleep!)

I had a nice 7.5 mile run planned today with my running club. Although when I looked over the route this morning I was told that it was really a little over 8 miles. It turned out to be 10.1 miles!! Which I did just fine, but I really didn't want to quite go that far today. Oh well. :confused3

Anyway, dinner's ready so off I go now. Then to the laundramat because our clothes dryer is broken--and we used that money to repair the air conditioning yesterday. (Yes, the air conditioning)

Where to start...

Debra - No, I didn't ever sign up for the Crystal Coast this weekend, and I'm just as glad. Last year's inaugural race was run during a tornado warning and hail (we opted to forfeit our registration and not even drive down), and yesterday dawned cold and rainy. I know I'm supposed to be dedicated and run regardless of conditions, but if I'm going to run a race at the beach, I expect nice weather! So no race report from me...

Maria - They're forecasting anywhere from 2-6" for us tonight, and being in NC that means the entire city will shut down regardless. It doesn't matter to me, since I'm off work for the whole week (not by choice, mind you, it's a non-paid "must take a week off" sort of thing!), but DD is having a fit since they'll lose yet another day of their spring break as a makeup day if school is closed tomorrow.

Jeanne - I'd pay to see John in a purple crown. Are you sure he doesn't want to wear one? :lmao:

Richard - Gotta hate it when the runs turn out to be that much longer! Several of our Galloway routes are longer than advertised, but it's usually early in the season when they're fairly short. Unfortunately that makes it more of a shock to the senses when they tell you it's a 5-mile day and it's really 5.8. But 10.1? That's a significant increase!

As for me - I blew off yet another long run on Saturday, but so did most of my group since the weather here was truly horrible. And yes, I should have gotten on the TM, but I didn't. So my #1 fitness goal for March is to do ANYTHING! My plan is to start this week, since I'm not working and should have time to myself (read DD at school and DH at work and me with just the puppies to fend off).

It's been a long few days - Sienna (youngest pup) has a urinary tract infection, which means all house-breaking has gone out the window. If she's not at the door asking to go out, she's peeing on the floor, the couch, the blankets, her bed, or back at the door asking to go out again! We went to the vet Friday and got antibiotics, and are just beginning to see improvement.

And my big announcement - the little toe that had the blister during the marathon? It lost its toenail this week! I feel like such a real runner now! Or at least I did after I got over the initial :scared1: and  .

Now to go stare out the window and wait for the snow...

Jackie

:stitch: Welcome to 'Ohana's Monday Mixer! :stitch:

Come early, stay late, visit on any day of the week. No need to stick strictly to the topic, either. We’re just happy to hear from our cousins and swap a tale or two over some tasty beverages. :drinking1

Today's loose topic:How do you pass the time on long walks/wogs/runs if you don’t listen to music and are training solo? (Or what you do in addition to/as an alternative to listening to music?) What makes the long miles less daunting and maybe even enjoyable? What do you watch for, think about, concentrate on? From the serious to silly to the surreal, we want to hear your stories.

.

Hey Everyone!
How 'bout a Buzzie stoppin by for a quick hello:wave: I'm one of the Carolina Cuzzins who are actually experiencing our unique snow storm tonight. You northern neighbors are used to this kind of treatment but we really don't know how to handle it. Y'all don't go out and buy milk and bread everytime it snows do ya? Please tell me this is a purely Southern thang!

I really do enjoy stopping by occasionally and reading up on Cousins lives. I've been waiting on the next DOOD story for some time now.......

Now. For what I do when I don't listen to music. (I just bought one of them little music machines). Well anyway when I'm not listening I think to myself :

That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd run to the end of town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I'd just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since I run this far, maybe I'd just run across the great state of Alabama. And that's what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on going. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on going. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I'd gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on going.

Morning Cousins!!!!!!!!!!

Monday Mixer, how fun...party: I missed the last one so I hope someone saved me a seat!!

How do I pass the time running without music....people run without music...:scared1: I am pretty sure I would become delusional and go running off through the woods like a deer if I did not have music to maintain my sanity....:lmao: :lmao:

Hi Everyone!

It's 7:00 AM and I've got
250px-Corona-6Pack1.jpg
. Can you tell the kids have a snow day today?

Debra - Thanks for getting the party started. party: :drinking1

Mike - Are you enjoying the snow? Up here in the north, the adults are sick of it, but the kids sure do love it. Running out for milk and bread before a storm is not just a Southern thing - we do it too. Although I must admit that sometimes (like yesterday) I run out to get cupcakes and cookies. You can't be snowed in without good snacks. I like your long run advice. If I ever decide to go for a Forrest Gump-style run, I'm going to call you. :rotfl:

Lisa - Keep listening to your music. We definitely don't want you running off through the woods - unless, of course, that's where you want to run. :upsidedow

Now I'm off to find some limes to go with the Corona. I'll be back soon.

/
Cupcakes, cookies and Corona.....we were at BC this weekend for a field hockey tourney. Why was I not invited earlier???????????????????

If I'm running alone I must have music. I think I'd just stop and turn around and go home without it. Honestly I think I'd be thinking "well this is no fun" and just go home.
Must. Have. Tunes.

Or if no tunes a friend to be chatting with!

Happy Monday! No school here, again. Mondays are usually my favorite day of the week, really, because kids are in school and it is my day off. I can use them however I like. So when there is no school on a Monday, oh it kills me.
Wish me luck today.

Allyson

If only I had known that you were in the neighborhood - we could have started the party a day or two earlier!

By the way, here are the limes

for the Corona. Now who wants a cupcake?

Good morning all :yay:

No school here today either- we had close to 12inches on snow on our grass and about 7 on the driveway. Does shoveling for an hour count as cross training?

I'm another of the usually run with music people. Actually we have TMs set up as the "second row" in our home theater. Big comfy chair up front with TMs behind so we can watch tv on the big screen while we run. (DH and I each have a TM so we run together but at our own pace).

Since so any people run with music I'll relate the story that occupied DH's time last night. He found a program that looks at you itunes library and tells you how many bmp each song is. He then made a playlist so that the bpm matched his running speed-- one beat for each footfall. It was pretty cool. I have him at home now working on one for me :thumbsup2

Gotta get back to work-- some of us still have to work today ;)

Just wanted to pop in and say Happy Monday!

Where are the drinks? I think I was promised drinks at this mixer! :rotfl2:

I listen to the DisUnplugged Podcast on my long runs. And I always have an audiobook in progress when I need a change of pace from music. If I can get absorbed by a good audiobook that is the best! Time just flies!

Aloha Cousins and Honored Guests! :stitch2:

Even though I meant to go to work today, Mother Nature had other ideas...I'm not plowing though 8" to get on roads no one should be on. :sad2:

But, I still got up early and did my 4mi, I knew if I didn't it would just get away from me :happytv:

If we're going to drink this early, I need a Bloody Mary! You guys like to get the party started, don't you?! party:

Shame on you, Julie, tempting me with a cupcake! I'm going to be perfectly happy with a lovely clementine...but I will take some salt for my margarita! :goodvibes

I don't think I can run without music, but it's true my mind does wander the longer I go. I tend to think about what I need to accomplish for the rest of the day, vacation planning, or strategies to deal with my co-irker (don't ask). :rolleyes1 If I'm having a particularly rough day, my mind will flitter between Jamie Bamber, Kevin McKidd and other assorted studly types. I would say Billy Miller, but I doubt any of you know who he is ;)

Ok, enough of that. I have piano practice to supervise before I move ds along to his book report....hey, just because we're home doesn't mean we can't be productive! I just finished the prep for "My Easter Journey" books for my Sunday School class.

Good Morning Team 'Ohana!

No snow here in Seattle, I'm happy to report. :rotfl2: We're one of those cities that just can't deal with snow, between the monstrous hills, lack of anything but summer tires, and all the people who only see snow once or twice a year. I grew up in Canada's snow belt, but fully admit that everyone in Seattle is better off staying indoors when the white stuff threatens. :lmao:

I do listen to music (mostly PodRunner podcasts - they're free mixes of an hour of music, set at a certain pace, with a new one uploaded every week) when I'm on the treadmill, but if I'm running outside, I leave the iPod at home. I almost always run with my German Shepherd, Jack, and I find that between my heart rate monitor, my dog, and keeping us both safe from cyclists and cars, it's just too much to keep track of, when you add in music. However, I am the crazy runner who keeps up a running one-sided conversation with her dog as she runs. Jack is very anxious around other dogs while on leash. It's completely different at the dog park, but I guess that when he's on-leash, we've taken away his flight choice and all that's left is fight. He doesn't lunge or bark, but he does cry and growl and get his hackles up. So, what I found works is, when we spot a dog up ahead, I start talking to him in a really happy voice. "Look, do you see that dog, Jack? He looks like a friendly dog, doesn't he? What breed do you think he is? ..." Ok, so I sound crazy, but it does work to make him feel less anxious. However, that did eventually evolve into me just chatting with him non-stop while running. I only do it while running, but I'm sure the neighbors have a name for me! :lmao:

Hope everyone is having a tolerable Monday morning!

When I run I think of it as "me" time. I do listen to music but I also spend that time reflecting, sometimes I just repeat words of affirmation in my head.

Audiobooks sound like a good way to pass the time. Do you have any recommendations?

Okay, so I am one of the few "abby-normals" to run without music and also alone--all the time. Not that I have anything against music, mind you,or people either (well just some of them!), but I just don't do it.

So I run, and I think about how I'm feeling--legwise and breathwise, then I start counting off milestones, then I start doing the math in my head..."1 mile equals 1/7 equals 14%, etc", then I stop doing that because I don't feel like doing math anymore, then I think "I could SO do a marathon", then I think "who ever told you you could run!", then I sing random songs in my head, then I think about what I'll have for lunch, then I think about what I'll have for dinner (food is big with me), then I think about my loonnggg shower and how good it will feel, then I play Disney attractions in my head--those Muppets kill me every time, then I tell a few dogs to shut up, then I think about my dog, then my kids, then my husband (or maybe not in that order), then I pretend I am running a race and am putting the hammer down for the home stretch, then I smile because I'M DONE!

Hey, you asked......;)

Maura

Maria - Sorry about the cupcake. I hope you enjoy your clementine (and maragarita). If it makes you feel any better, my mom just came over with a cake - yes, an entire cake. She made it this morning for the kids and now I have to try to find a way to not eat any of it. :scared1:

Maura - If I tried to do math in my head, I'd surely run into a tree or get hit by a car. I like the idea of thinking about food though...:)

The Podrunner podcasts sound great. I'll have to give that a try since I don't plan to have a furry running partner any time soon. I would love to have a dog, but unfortunately, my DD is allergic to most dogs. Jack sounds like a great running buddy. :goodvibes
