Team Mickey - Biggest Loser "No Excuses" 2012 Challenge

i have an update to my salad post...

it's freezing today and storytime at the library was canceled so i trucked the kids up to the stamford mall to go to their play area. it's right at the food court. i decided to head to subway for lunch. reeeeally wanted a sub but decided to get the grilled chicken and baby spinach salad instead, hold the cheese. the nice subway lady asked me what kind of dressing i want and i nearly screamed NO! at her :rotfl2:lol. instead i had her give me a little squirt of the ff sweet onion and i mixed and mixed and mixed to try to stretch it out.

holla! happy i kept it together at the food court.

of course, in order to have my salad in relative peace i may or may not have let my kid have a ginormous cookie for lunch...:rolleyes1

Dumbo_buddy: Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do .

Okay well I just ran/walked my mile in the house. I really didn't want to get on the treadmill. I started running little intervals last night during commercial breaks. The furthest I got was 4 minutes. Now of course I was running in place. So today I told Alan to stay in one spot in the house. I turned the country music channel on my satelite and started running in place for a few minutes. Then I stopped and started walking in place. Then I got really adventurous (LOL) and started running around the house. You can imagne the funny looks I was getting from the cats . So anyway long story short my mile was 33 minutes long. I'm going to do my BL workout later tonight. I need to get some lunch in me.

I guess I can count giving two massages today as my workouts for the day. I was sweating during both: 2.25 hours total. I had my Herbalife Shake for breakfast, 2 cups of NRG tea, 3 glasses of water with aloe and a protein bar for lunch. I think I will be having mushroom ravioli for dinner or some orange chicken from Trader Joe's. Ash has dancing and wants to eat before that. I also get to run to the Transfer Station after dropping her off.

I need a snack of something before I go pick up Izzie at school. Ash is doing her homework. They piled it on the first day back as usual. And the math teacher gives more and more even when they have a project due at the end of the week!

Have a good night!

TTFN :tigger:

Which brings me to my question of the day for Tuesday, January 3, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you? ::MickeyMo

It used to surprise me, but not so much anymore. Once in a while I will be pleasantly surprised by how few, but mostly it's shocking how many calories and salt are in any one dish.
Ordered Chianti braised short ribs at Olive garden and couldn't figure out why I was so bloated. Come to find out the entree is a bit over 1000 calories, but the sodium was just under 3000. Holy Mickey!!!:scared1: No wonder I felt like my body was gonna pop. lol. It sure was worth it at the time though. ;)

Hi everybody - I have just signed up for the team challenge and been assigned to Team Mickey. I am now the heaviest I have ever been (except briefly when pregnant with twins) and need to lose between 3 and 3 1/2 stone. I tried to diet all last year and ended up heavier than when I started which was not good. Hopefully this year I will have the motivation and will succeed - we are going back to Disney in December so would like to be thin for that.

I had a slow start this morning. I struggle with nightmares and bad dreams and lately I've been having a lot of them. I did not sleep well last night. CC

Just wanted to say I hope the nightmares stop and you can get a peaceful night.
Are you taking any new medications or supplements? Sometimes they will trigger nightmares. I tried a new Melatonin to help me sleep and it gave me the most awful nightmares. Didn't know until my daughter started complaining of the same thing. Once we switched to our old brand, the nightmares stopped. hth.

:wave2: Gonna post and run because I need to get to the store. I am out of EVERYTHING! The worst way to start a healthy eating plan is by not having any food in the house!

Gonna try to find my list of low/no carb snacks and post it later. Off the top of my head (since it is what is planned for this week) I like
  • fat free yogurt with low sugar,
  • celery with Peanut Butter (use no sugar added natural PB) or dip
  • cheese Laughing Cow has some good low fat cheese in different flavors you can put in celery, eggs and lots of other things.
  • Low Fat Mozzarella "String Cheese" is a great easy to grab and go snack. Wrap a piece of ham or turkey lunchmeat around it, maybe a dab of mustard and yum!
  • Take a piece of ham lunchmeat (remember to look for low fat and sugar content), spread with a schmear of lite cream cheese (tub type is easiest), put a dill pickle spear in the middle and wrap up. I love to make a few of these ahead of time for an on the go snack. Just keep them in an insulated bag with an icepack
  • Of course nuts. Watch your serving size and you don't want ones with sugar.
    Soup or small salad

I LOVE this website for great low carb (not all are so you do need to evaluate them) recipes for dips, snacks, meals, sides, breakfasts, really everything! http://www.kalynskitchen.com/ And I just picked up some Hungry Girl Cookbooks where she talks about having "mini meals"-- snack can be a small portion of leftovers, the other half of your lunch (I will often have salad for lunch and then soup for a snack later instead of soup and salad together).

Love, love, LOVE South Beach! I am a huge :cheer2: for it! It was recommended to me by a doctor about 7 years ago and she presented it not as a diet but as a way to teach myself to eat healthy and make lifelong habits. I have been on and off the wagon over the years but I do KNOW what choices I should be making and I find it very easy. Lean Protein, Veggies, Healthy Carbs in limited quantities. Easy Peasy. I find it also very easy to make choices when I am out. I don't have worry about calories and fat or points, I just make a choice that follows that formula and find I can adapt things very easy.

Thanks. Really appreciate that you took the time to post so much good information and I've already added Kaylenskitchen to my bookmarks.

Hey Mickeys, you're so fine! ::MickeyMo

Sorry been a bit MIA today -- this working thing really interferes with the old Dis time. :lmao: Not to mention I just poofed a page of replies -- hope I'm as witty, sage and entertaining the second time around. ;)

Which brings me to my question of the day for Tuesday, January 3, 2012: Are you surprised by how much (or little) you can eat for the calories, depending on which foods you choose? Which meal was most shocking to you?

I, too, like I feel I know portions and calories by now after years of practicing but I still find myself shocked about things sometimes. It's good to be reminded what calorie bombs muffins are every once in awhile. ::yes::

Jess, good luck with the blood tests tomorrow. :flower3:

Goals:
1. Follow training plan & survive HM in May. I am slow as a glacier, but that's ok!

Back of the pack is where it's at! :cool2:

Kristina, your journal looks fabulous! :thumbsup2

I would like to join!

:welcome: floydfamily! Please send a PM to our lovely hostess, Janis, and she will assign you to a team. Good luck!

Tracey, glad that the flu bug has finally left the house! :thumbsup2

Good morning everyone! this morning I trotted on the treadmill for 2 miles so hopefully I can stick to this routine of getting exercise out of the way in the morning before DD wakes up and DH and I have to go to work. We have a new olympic facility that opened 1 mile from our house and that has a fitness and auquatics club my family joined. DH works out there at 5:30 am 3 days a week, I have yet to step foot in the place to work out. They are offering Zumba and cycle so I plan on trying those in the evening. It's hard for me to leave DD for an hour in the evening when she goes to bed around 8:30 that cuts into our time since I'm gone until 3:30 at work. I feel guilty so we'll see at least I'm treadmilling in the AM. I'm sure 1 extra hour a week isn't going to scar her for life right?!? Have a good day Team and keep on truckin'!

Good job with the working out in the morning! :thumbsup2 Mom guilt is the pits. Could you try working out one morning early at the facility when your DH isn't? Trust me things that you haven't even thought of might scar her for life but leaving for her an hour a week won't. (I scarred my son for life in It's Tough to Be a Bug -- he's almost 13 and still complains. :rotfl: But never has he complained about being in daycare as a child, and trust me, at this age he find plenty to complain about. :rotfl2:)

The food that surprised me the most recently was the Peppermint Mocha drink that McDonald's had over the holidays. Our news talked about it on a health segment one night- over 400 calories! It's so easy to forget about drinks when you are adding up calories, but that thing is as much as a small meal.:scared1:

::yes:: I think it's the whipped cream that is the calorie bomb in those things.

Good Morning just thought I'd say hi before going to work. I didn't do well at all yesterday but it was my last day off work and now I'll be more on a schedule so that should help. I've packed my lunch so I'll do good until I get home tonight for sure and then it's a matter of will power. Have a good day everyone!

Good job getting yourself set up for your busy day today, Heather! :goodvibes

QOTD: i think the most surprising thing is the amount of calories in a salad! here i used to think that if anything was served on top of lettuce it was ok! but hello! salad dressing has GOT to be the devil! a serving is usually only a tablespoon or two. when has ANYONE only used that much when not dieting?? even the fat free stuff or light stuff usually isn't all that good because it's loaded with sugar.

i usually just forgo the dressing all together because i never find myself using the correct portion. eyeballing is a no-no for me.

I do the dressing on the side thing. I can dip the tines or the bites in the salad and make the dressing last better that way.

And thanks for your nice words! :flower3:

Lisa -- i haven't said this but i've thought it many times....as dumbo-buddy just said we are SOOOO fortunate to have you coaching us!! :thanks:

Thank you, too, Molli! :goodvibes I always like to coach the first week because it helps me to get off to a good start, too.

Like someone else said, at this point very little surprises me. Now disappointment is another issue :rolleyes1 How can there be so many calories in one tiny piece of fudge?

I totally know what you mean, Maria. There is something about it, too, that adds like three times the calories that you are eating. :sad2:

Quickly popping in before another day of busy chaos. Tomorrow I will be able to 1 - physically get to my computer (DD20's fiancee sleeps here a few days of the week in my 'office'), and 2 - have time to SIT and read and post.

Hope your day goes well, Julie!

That actually brings me to today's QOTD: When I first started WW, the biggest surprises were how little 1 cup of pasta is and the calories and sugar in jarred pasta sauces.

Thanks for the reminder of the importance of checking those measurements with portion sizes too! ::yes::

Gonna try to find my list of low/no carb snacks and post it later. Off the top of my head (since it is what is planned for this week) I like

    Soup or small salad

Thanks for sharing your great list, LTS! :goodvibes I need to do better in this area and you've given me some good ideas.

;:wave2:

LTS -- I LOVE laughing cow cheese!! Yum-o! I buy that stuff 4 and 5 containers at a time. I eat it with my lunch every day. My favorite proetien shake (haven't bought any in awhile) are the Special K milk chocolate. I need to get back to buying them.
Not much variety at Wallyworld today. Ended up with just the plain light stuff. Hungry Girl uses it a lot in her recipes. If you haven't seen her cookbooks you can go to her site and she actually has a photo of all of the recipes along with the name. (at least for the 2 I just checked out from the library-- 200 under 200 and 300 under 300 ) Now I am not advocating plagiarism or anything but if you google the name of the recipe you can usually find it somewhere on the 'net. :rolleyes1

Okay CC here are some pics. Some will turn out better then others. Some are screen shots and others are taken with my Blackberry.

Front of binder

Screen shot of a blank fitness log. This was a simple calendar I made in Microsoft Publisher. I just write my workouts in with pencil that way if i want to go back and change them I can.

Meal plan template made in Word. It may be hard to read but it gives you the general idea

Screen shot of my Sparkpeople minutes tracked. This of course is available to anyone that joins Sparkpeople. At the end of the week I print them off and put them in my binder so I can keep track of the minutes, calories, and exercises I'm doing.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing the photos. I may add something like this to my Flylady Control Journal (if I can ever get it back up to date!)

I am actually surprised by many things when I find out the calories. Salad dressing is a big one, Starbucks drinks, etc. You don't think something so basic would have so many calories. You all should have seen my oldest child's face (Corinne) when she saw how many calories were in a Caesar Salad at Red Robins....it was over 1,000. Wow!!!!! :scared1:
ALWAYS order the dressing on the side when eating out. I have done this for years even when not "dieting" because they just drench them in dressing. You will probably find you don't need nearly as much as THEY think you do! Another great tip is to just dip the tines of your fork into the dressing before you get a bite of the salad. You don't end up using as much that way. And also look at what toppings are being put on the salad and don't be afraid to ask them to hold some of them-- like fried onion strips, tortilla strips, croutons, bacon etc or what I usually do is sort of deconstruct the salad and take off a lot of the fattening stuff and just leave enough to make a nice salad. And of course a restaurant salad is usually enough for 2 or 3 servings so ask for a To Go box right away and put at least 1/2 of it in there for later.

Can you tell that I LOVE salads? :lovestruc

So I am doing low carb. My fav snack is the Breyers Low Carb ice cream bars. DH is not good about low carb right now, he is just trying to cut back on carbs. BUT last night when I went to the freezer, he says " I ate your last Ice Cream bar"!! STINKER!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it wrong that I was Really really mad?
I would have been FURIOUS!! And probably would have made my DH haul his butt to the store and buy me a box immediately! I get cranky like that. :rolleyes1

it's right at the food court. i decided to head to subway for lunch. reeeeally wanted a sub but decided to get the grilled chicken and baby spinach salad instead, hold the cheese. the nice subway lady asked me what kind of dressing i want and i nearly screamed NO! at her :rotfl2:lol. instead i had her give me a little squirt of the ff sweet onion and i mixed and mixed and mixed to try to stretch it out.

of course, in order to have my salad in relative peace i may or may not have let my kid have a ginormous cookie for lunch...:rolleyes1
The last few times I have been to subway I have ordered the Meatball sub made into a salad with spinach as the base. That makes them look at me like :confused3. They can't believe I just want meatballs and spinach and nothing else. But the warm meatballs wilt the spinach just a little and make a nice entree. Or I will order the full meatball sub, again with just meat and spinach and a fork and knife and eat it off of the bread. I am sure the meatballs have way more fat in them then I would like but it is just a occasional thing.

I just bought a bunch of low fat cheese and told my DD16 as we were putting it groceries away I told her that the low fat stuff is mine and please not eat it (that stuff is expensive!). She laughed and said "so you get all the healthy stuff and we have to eat the stuff that will make us fat?" YEP!:thumbsup2 Sometimes we have to sacrifice a tiny bit of our kids' health for own sanity and needs. :teeth:

Okay well I just ran/walked my mile in the house.I turned the country music channel on my satelite and started running in place for a few minutes. Then I stopped and started walking in place. Holy Mickey!!!:scared1: No wonder I felt like my body was gonna pop. lol. It sure was worth it at the time though. ;)
I agree. I think the sodium level is what always shocks me the most. And I guess I just don't understand why it ends up with so much salt. We certainly don't use that much in home cooking and things taste fine. Why do processed/restaurant foods end up with so much sodium?

Good to know. I use it occasionally and think it is great when needed. I do know I have some bizarre dreams but have never had nightmares with it.

So it took me about 3 hours and 3 stores to get my shopping done.:headache: I really, really hate walmart but my budget just won't allow me to get the bulk of my groceries elsewhere. WHY do they have to stock the shelves at NOON??? The store is full of shoppers and there are boxes and carts with people stocking blocking every aisle.:headache: I can guarantee that they did not have a run on everything in the store in the hours between 5am and 10am so if they stocked overnight (like most places do!) it would make life a lot easier. Plus no matter what they are stocking, they are still out of whatever it is that I am looking for.

Does anyone know anything about ground turkey? Of course I have a lot of "diet" recipes that use it and I always read about substituting ground turkey for the ground beef to make things healthier but all I could find was marked Lean and is 93/7 percent. The ground beef that I use is leaner than that! So how does that make my dish healthier than just using ground beef? And I had to go to 3 stores just to find that.

Family has invaded my scrapbook room so gotta run for now.

The new season of Biggest Loser starts tonight. :goodvibes

I usually watch it the next day online. I will get to see John Rhode, winner of Season 12, at the 10K I am doing in Phoenix in March when I visit my Mom. I'm hoping some of the other Phoenix BL past contestants will be there, too.

Following Lisah’s idea and replying 1 page at a time. I probably only have time to reply to 1 page of posts now as well.

It does help to break it up or even just reply to the posts on the page where we are. Whatever works! :thumbsup2

Bicki, doesn't sound like you strayed too far on your detox. :goodvibes I always like it when you journal and find out something wasn't as bad as you thought!

Okay, on fitness pal I think we need emails not just screen names. Anyone know?
My screen name is Nrade

Yep! I see all the Lisa’s and Nancy’s are together again!!! LOL!!! Who assigns these teams!!

You're just lucky that way! :rotfl2: Glad that you here! :flower3:

I sent you a friend request on myfitnesspal. My screen name there is 1313harbor

Anybody know where that is? :cool2:

I love crystal lite and have been having that lately! I have no problem drinking pop in any container but I am kinda the same about water. It has to be ice cold. I find myself making a tall glass of water with ice and when the ice melts I dump the water and start over!

Wow, Lisa! You're doing so good with kicking the Dr. Pepper! :worship:

I'm a protein person. If it doesn't have protein in it, I am unlikely to eat it.

Protein does seem to stay with you longer! :thumbsup2

Hi everyone! I hope the day is going GREAT for you! :cheer2:

Same to you! :flower3:

So I am doing low carb. My fav snack is the Breyers Low Carb ice cream bars. DH is not good about low carb right now, he is just trying to cut back on carbs. BUT last night when I went to the freezer, he says " I ate your last Ice Cream bar"!! STINKER!!!!!!!!!!!! Is it wrong that I was Really really mad?

Your trainer might be able to help you with the whole heart rate/run speed thing. 4.0 mph is a tad faster than the required pace for a Disney race. That's fast enough for me! ::yes::

I totally do not blame you for being mad at the loss of the last ice cream bar. I've had that conversation with my DH before, too. Um, I'm working really hard here, and all I've thought about all day is that last thing, and now you've mindlessly eaten it?!? Next time you need to hide it better! ;)

Oh, and may I recommend the Lightsaber app for your new iPhone? It's free. :teeth: It turns your phone into a lightsaber with full Star Wars sound effects. You can even change your lightsaber base and color. It has no practical application but if you ever need to whip out your lightsaber and take care of someone, you will be ready! :darth:

So far I have done well this week. :cheer2: I've:
Exercised 10 minutes a day
Drunk my 4 glasses of water (or more)
I've only had 2 sodas a day
And I've eaten smaller portions and a lot less carbs.

Woo hoo Michelle! :woohoo:

Evening All,

Dinner is simmering away in a stir fry pan. It smells good, but we'll see what happens when my parents eat it. I can guarantee you they will need salt. I like food unsalted, but they do NOT!!!!!!!!!

I copied and pasted posts into Word so I could take my time in replying while I am stirring the sauce. I'll be back on later.

CC

of course, in order to have my salad in relative peace i may or may not have let my kid have a ginormous cookie for lunch...:rolleyes1

Just try not to share it with him.

That walking around the mall would qualify for your activity for the 100 day challenge. I did some cross training today -- who would have thought I really wished it was running instead. :confused3

Dumbo_buddy: Sometimes you gotta do what ya gotta do .

:rotfl2:

Your workout sounds like the Leslie Sansone workouts. :thumbsup2

I guess I can count giving two massages today as my workouts for the day. I was sweating during both: 2.25 hours total.

I'm sure that does qualify for a workout, Tracey!

It used to surprise me, but not so much anymore. Once in a while I will be pleasantly surprised by how few, but mostly it's shocking how many calories and salt are in any one dish.

You do deserve to treat yourself sometimes. ::yes:: Another strategy is to box up half right off the bat so you can make the treat last.

Jo, is right melatonin can give you vivid and weird dreams.

I just picked up the book Walk away the Pounds at the Library. Haven't read it in detail but I guess I am kind of confused about walking in place. Seems strange to me. I guess I should try it.

On the hamburger/turkey question this is what I found on myfitnesspal

4 oz 93/7 turkey 240 cal 17 g fat 20 g protein
4 oz 95/5 hamburger 201 cal 8 g fat 29 g protein

Seems like hamburger is a bit better but maybe if you were watching your cholesterol it might not be the better choice? :confused3

I found Leslie Sansone a bit boring plus she was so darn perky it used to make me annoyed. :rotfl: But I'm one of those folks who needs to move my body. YMMV.

Do you love salads but hate the process of getting it ready or just don't have time every morning before work?

I've been making 'salad in a jar' for a few months and I love the convenience. Make ahead food is your friend. :thumbsup2 Check it out!

http://www.salad-in-a-jar.com/skinny-secrets/salad-in-a-jar

Jo

Sounds interesting!

I'll be back in a couple of minutes with tomorrows QOTD. I am trying something new for Thursday called "tell me what you want" Thursday. Would you rather talk about stress, exercise or do the math for weight loss? Let me know. :flower3:

OK, surprise surprise, I've fallen behind on the thread:rotfl2:

Note 2 self: Make team Mickey 1st stop after email and BEFORE Castleville:lmao:

Hope everybody's week is going better than mine. Have not gotten back on the exercise wagon as AF and a cold are competing for all of my energy and breathing. They win, they can have it.

Its not a bad cold at all, it just like to swell my throat shut at random intervals:headache: Well the videos aren't going anywhere.

And on the workout video hunt I have a question for any experienced kettle bell users here: I am looking into affordable kettlebells and wondering which weight to start with. I have looked at a few video clips and I think i will try them at some point. I typically use 5lb dumbbells in my workouts and the kettlebells seem to start at 7. Should i start there or try 10?

TIA

Better late than never, right? Hi! I'm Liz, and this is my first BL challenge.

I'm 39 (40 on August 1st), married to Eric (DEA on the boards) for eight years. We have two beautiful daughters - Anna (7) and Tessa (4). We live in northern VA, but I'm from New England - grew up in CT and lived in the Boston area for several years. I work two jobs - one for a university in DC and one managing an academic journal - and life is busy, as you can imagine. We count our blessings every day. :)

I've done this dance for a loooong time. I first joined WW back in 1996. ! Two re-joins later, in 2000, it stuck, and I made lifetime status, losing 33 pounds in about 6 months. I maintained that loss until Eric and I got married - and I got pregnant the next month! With Anna, I gained 80 pounds. :scared1: I lost just about all of it after she was born, and then I gained 60 during my pregnancy with Tessa. Oy. Most of that came off, too, but the last 15 (to a revised goal) have been stubborn as anything. I'm back on WW, of course, as I've loved the success I've had with it (I'm also the liaison for the university where I work and WW - we have an on-campus meeting). But I think I need a little extra push and accountability to jump-start myself - especially my exercise - after the holiday season.

So here I am! Proud to be Team Mickey and looking forward to a great challenge. Now, here's hoping I can keep up!

XO
Liz

XO

JI found Leslie Sansone a bit boring plus she was so darn perky it used to make me annoyed. :rotfl: But I'm one of those folks who needs to move my body. YMMV.

She was my first video instructor and she's great for anybody getting back in the game, but after 2 weeks I wanted to throw the remote at her. Loved the workout but hated the perkiness and the expressions on the group working out behind her. The editing also annoyed me and after week 3 when i had it down cold I muted her and turned on a random CD to move with. This kept me going until i finally maxed out on how far i could go with that 1 and got a stability ball:lmao:

No more Leslie for me. And if you think she's perky just watch Denise whatshername. OH BOY! Does she turn the sun on:rotfl:

I'll be back in a couple of minutes with tomorrows QOTD. I am trying something new for Thursday called "tell me what you want" Thursday. Would you rather talk about stress, exercise or do the math for weight loss? Let me know. :flower3:

Anything except math for weight loss please:thumbsup2

Evening All,

Dinner is simmering away in a stir fry pan. It smells good, but we'll see what happens when my parents eat it. I can guarantee you they will need salt. I like food unsalted, but they do NOT!!!!!!!!!

I copied and pasted posts into Word so I could take my time in replying while I am stirring the sauce. I'll be back on later.

Oh I am the same way as your parents...I. Love. Salt!!! I salt EVERYTHING! Ok confession time...I even salt canned soup. :rolleyes1I know that's terrible! I try so hard to cut down, but I haven't been successful yet.
