Have I vented about D's stepdad's party yet?
Sorry. A rant:
D's mom and stepdad like to throw lavish parties for themselves (or each other, depending on how you look at it) on their "big" birthdays.
D's stepdad is turning 80 in early Jan.
I love D's stepdad, and I have said here, over and over, that I get upset with D's mom giving us "preferential" treatment. She is so obviously more enamored of my kids - her only biological grandchildren, with 8 steps - that I am completley uncomfortable.
However.
We are now expected to attend a birthday party in the Chicago area on 1/10.
Even Southwest flights are going at over $125/person/each way.
And, gee, the kids have just started back to school on the 5th.
D has a brother and 6 step-siblings, and to be fair, we are the only ones out of state with school age kids - the others that live away either have no kids or the kids are in or out of college. The people who otherwise have kids (mostly in high school) live within a half-hour of the parents' house.
Anyway, I would be fine with not going, or only sending D. Because really, I don't want to spend nearly $1000 just after Christmas, for a 3 day weekend (that includes skipping a day of school just after the break) because it's just not practical. But his mom is laying on all sorts of guilt, and D himself, due to his cousin's situation, is feeling very "family oriented" so he's resistant to me and the boys staying home.
AAAAAAAARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
So, I don't know where to go. On the one hand, I feel that due to my whole attitude about D's mom giving us preferential treatment, I should just shut up. On the other, I think it's ridiculous to expect a younger family to spend this money, travel just after a break, miss school, etc. for a short time, so why couldn't they have planned the party for 12/28 or something?

And frankly, none of this would matter if his mom would just accept that we can't make it.
Darn it.
Any suggestions on how to handle?

I dealt with a monster headache most of the day. We had a super-fun tennis class this morning.

I then went over to my friend's house to see the paint in her new basement and just chat and catch up.
Buzz had a swim lesson, then we came home and ate the crock-pot Italian beef that I so love.
D is stranded in Portugal - the plane broke.

Hopefully he'll be home tomorrow! He was supposed to be home today.
Anyway...
Hope you all have a good night!
