Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Debra - See above... Mel did a better description of the taping. That is what I do and it works wonders!!

Mel - I agree that I won't pay to have the pod tape my foot. It's funny because when she did it the first time she told me people come in weekly to have it done instead of buying orthotics. Now seriously, in the long run I think orthotics would be cheaper... or just tape them yourself, it's not rocket science!!!!

OK, I got some meds for my sinuses and I feel better this afternoon than I have in a week. I hope this is what I need for the race.... oh and no rain, definately NO RAIN!!!

Julie: I hope I get to meet your super-secret agent in January. He's small, so he might be able to slip into the shadows. DOOD would love to stay in the CR, sometime, because he's such a product of his Star Wars/Logan's Run youth. I don't know what his parents might say as they'll want to stay at the same resort, but they certainly do love the monorail. (Last January I snagged them a seat with the driver!)

Jen and Mel: Thanks for the responses for the resorts & the taping. We've stayed at, and I loved, POFQ. And DOOD and I liked the Poly--okay, I like it a lot and DOOD liked that I loved it. (He's just such a hard sell with the resorts--he likes to "escape" the magic :scared1: and I secretly think he hears the siren call of Priceline). The Low-Dye Strapping idea intrigues me, as it seems to have to do with addressing the mechanics of my foot and gait. I have yet to experience any other issue, like PF, but I since I know my blistering is related to my pronation I have to wonder whether taping/orthotics are something to try. I'm going to go through my variety of socks first, but still....

Maria: Thanks for bringing up the AAA discount, which speaks to his language. He's not cheap, just frugal and it's his ability to rein us (um, me) in that allows us to travel as much as we do. DOOD has stayed as CS for a conference and liked it "well enough." (That's his phrase when he doesn't wan to acknowledge the Disney magic.)

Jen: Good luck on your half and I'm hoping for NO RAIN! Have fun with Pat and her DH! :woohoo:

As for me: Not much to say. I need to rejigger my WO/running routine post-Memorial Day. We'll be doing some biking this weekend to parks and we're going to see the Chocolate show at the Phipps Conservatory; darn it all, though, I don't think they serve chocolate and I'll have to wander around smelling chocolate-y plants! Tonight we're going to watch the epi of Battlestar Galactica we missed from last week, and they'll probably be one matinee of Indy Jones. (Matinees are cheaper, don't cha know? ;) )

I hope you all have a fabulous Memorial Weekend and enjoy the sun, the fun, and a run!

How cool that you got DOOD's parents a seat with the driver. I've always wanted to do that, but every time I ask, it's already full.

Actually, we're leaving the kiddos at home when we head to WDW in Jan. However, as mischievous as my little secret agent is, he just might slip into my carry-on bag and hop out yelling "Surprise!" once we've checked in. I wouldn't put anything past that little guy. We'll only be there Fri-Mon, so although I'm looking forward to meeting you and my other cousins and fellow WISHers, sadly (said with sarcasm ;) ) I don't know if there will be time to go on ToT.

Last year we stayed at the Poly because we had 4 people doing 5 different events (my daughter did the Goofy) and it was just so easy to get to the marathon and to cheer for them from that location. We used Marathon Tours and Travel because my kids were late in deciding what to do and it was one of the only ways we could get in without major fundraising. Their rate was much better than rack rate. I also have an AP but they release those rates so much later I am thinking of just booking with MT&T again. Jason (DS), John and I are all registered for our events but I will probably use them again because I have phoned CR several times and they cannot match the rate. I know it is expensive, but sooooo convenient.

Debra: I know I have been MIA lately and probably missed something, but exactly why are your in-laws banned from watching you run? I admit I don't know absolutely anything about the story, but it seems a bit harsh to ban them from something that they seem rightfully entitled to.....or are you saying all this in jest? Sorry for popping in on the middle of the story, but it just seems so out of character for you so I must be missing something.

Jeanne...you can book now at rack rate, then apply the AP discount to the reservation when it comes out. We did that last year.

Mel: do they always have a discount? And what would the % be? MT&T is charging $315/night including all fees and taxes for up to 4 guests. When I called CR it was around $440/night PLUS taxes PLUS an extra charge for the third person (I think $35/night). It would have to be at least 30% off to even match that rate. I keep thinking a bird in the hand.......

No guarantees. We're lucky to have a lot of options though, AP, FL resident, AAA, DVC. I think we actually used AAA last year at Poly. I think we paid $279/night with the discount and it was well over $300 when we booked. If MT&T includes the 11% bed tax and other assorted fees, I would definitely go with that. That's a deal!

Yikes! Sounds like POR or OKW for us this year!

Trying to sneak in a few posts between WOs, showers, and today's plan. (Indiana Jones here I come!)

Julie: I think early January is a good time to get that monorail seat, especially if you get there early in the day. Of course, it's more attractive if you have kids or first-timers with you, which is why it was exciting for us last year. It's too bad the kidlets won't be with you, but that just means you'll have more time to do ToT with me, with no excuses! ('Cause there's always time for ToT, just like there's always room for jello.)

Mel: Thanks for the info on AP and AAA discounts!

Jeanne: That Marathon Tours and Travel sounds like a better and better deal for us on the years where we have to defer decisions. I'd love to stay at the Poly again (or try the CR), but I'm unsure of price at this point. :scared1: Good think we, too, have APs. (It about killed us, as when we lived in Fargo we went to DL and we got used to their AP prices.)

As for the IL stories, yeah, they have a lifetime ban on seeing me run, at least for now. (Can you hear me waffle there.) I'm pretty serious about it. It's a long story, not very interesting--maybe I should say that it's a series of small things that built up over time. Lots of it the specific ban is centered around their general lack of support, and specifically in my running. The final moment, the clincher, is that I asked them repeatedly NOT to watch me at the Disney 1/2 because
  1. I wanted to concentrate on just me for my first race and didn't want to have additional pressure (watching out for them, making time goals), and
  2. I didn't want any pictures taken of me on the course. (You know I don't like having my picture taken at all, hence all my attractive from-from-the-back pictures or my annoyingly obscure portraits--see avatar. :rotfl2: My ILs are a big picture-taking family and it's a sticking point with us. I'd compromised with them by letting them take all the pictures of me they wanted, no hassles, in the days before the race.)
Anyway, we'd had discussions of my race-day needs several times and I reiterated these needs during our week together before the race. I'd elicited promises from them not to watch, promises didn't seem to me to be a big deal because they only were at Disney to see DOOD run. (Which, btw, I'm glad they do as DOOD likes the support.) But then my FIL shows up on the course, camera in hand (although he didn't take a picture that I recall), as I'm entering Epcot. To her credit, my MIL tried to warn him away. He apologized afterward, said he got caught up in the moment, and I accepted the apology. But the ban holds--if you're not going to support me in the training, and in my inaugural event the one thing I needed was to be left alone, then I don't really need to see you on the course. (FWIW, I'd issue the same ban for my parents, for similar reasons. Of course, they don't even care enough to travel to DOOD's or my races, so it's a non-issue.)

See? I told you it wasn't very interesting. It probably sounds like a pretty hard line to draw in the sand, too; meet my dark side. But it's really not all the harsh--after all, my ILs aren't really interested in seeing me run, or really in my running at all. (And, strangely enough, they aren't interested in Disney either. Do you think it's me? :rolleyes1 ) They just don't like being told they can't do something. Anyway, we're going to compromise with the race involvement by having us volunteer together at the Disney 1/2, so it's all good.

As for me: See above, my response to Jeanne. I'm a bitter, bitter woman. :rotfl:

Julie -- you know there is a reason they are so cute the first year. After that you're too attached to get rid of them, no matter how frustrating they are! :rotfl:

Maria :goodvibes

Maria - You are so right!

Wasn't the weather beautiful today? Did you have time to get a workout in? I ran 5.8 miles this morning - my longest run to date. Tomorrow is supposed to be even warmer! :thumbsup2 Have a great week!

All this marathon talk is making me jealous! I want to do it so bad. Anthony Travel still has spots till October...if they are still open then. I may take the plunge then is there is still room. I just can't commit now since I don't know how we will be financially

Hola Team Ohana!

Ok, just a nutty weekend, but I did do 5.2 miles outside Saturday, and 5.8 on the TM yesterday. I'm also going to do my 6 miler Friday instead of Saturday, plus a bike ride or two, so the miles will come!

JacobsMommy -- I really, really wish I could do ToT, so I empathize with you!

Debra -- Trust me, your in-laws could be worse...I guess we all have our crosses to bear. My FIL told my son that at the turn of the century (and I'm assuming he meant 19th to 20th, but one never knows) cats used to be dogs. Explain that's wrong to a 5-yr. old! He also asked me if the place I work (homeless services agency) is really a big scam. Yes, it is, and I'm the biggest scam artist of them all...:furious: I tried to explain that 85% of the people we see are dually diagnosed (substance abuse issue and mentally ill -- which is quite a combination, trust me), but he just thinks they are lazy and should get jobs. Then I told him all of the people in our sober housing programs have jobs (and they do, it's a requirement), but rents are so high they cannot afford housing, and he told me they should just get better jobs...ok, I could do 4,000 words on this, but I know you all have lives! :rotfl:

Julie -- I am so happy we have Spring, finally! It seems like the weather has really broken, and I could not be happier! :dance3:

Jeanne -- echoing what Mel said, I booked CSR already, and when the AAA rates come out I'll call back to add it to our reservation. :thumbsup2

Mel -- I just may have died and gone to book heaven, nice site! :cool1: Ok, I'm 650 pages into Truman. This is interesting, but I admit I usually like to be done with a book alot quicker. I probably didn't need this comprehensive a biography. Well, I am a font of useless knowledge...::yes::

Everybody Wang Chung Tonight!
Maria

Mel: I love this site. It's the perfect thing to do to keep me from unpacking all my books after the move.

Julie: You're doing great--really moving up on the mileage. How are you doing it? You're following the 10% rule, I assume, but do you have a schedule/plan you're using?

Johanna: I understand the need to hold out before signing up on events because of finances. That's what keeps us from doing more races than we do, that and wonky work schedules. Especially Disney, since I seem to have a hard time with just going into Disney for a race....

Maria: I was at Kennywood Park today, and "Everybody Have Fun Tonight" was playing in one of the queues. What a coincidence! I know my ILs could be much worse (and they are much worse than the stories I tell here). But wow, I can't even imagine the cats/dogs thing. Was your FIL trying to be funny? :confused3 I don't even have the words for the his position on your workplace and the homeless. :furious: I can't imagine the position this puts you in, not only because he's your FIL but because of his DGF status.

All Ohana Cousins: Okay, folks, where are you? Did my momentary lapse of positivity concerning my ILs drive you all away? I can be sunny and optimistic, see? :goodvibes

Jen, I know you've just come back from your 1/2 and are getting in the swing of things with work and the end of school. Denny, are you ALWAYs at Disney, and when are you going to invite me to tag along? Jeanne, I know this month has been super busy with you. Corrina, I see you on your journal. Shell, I know that you're dying to give us a PT/surgery update.... I could go on, but don't make me lovingly call each and every one of you out!!! :rotfl:

Instead, I'll shout-out my best wishes to you and ask you to post your best (most ambitious, most looked-forward to, newest, most pressing) fitness plans for this summer. Fess up, and give us all ideas.

As for me: My priorities this summer? I'm working on speed up until I start marathon training and using Pilates/Yoga to strengthen my core and flexibility, two ongoing issues now that I've turned 40. :rotfl2:

Oh, and just a heads-up. This weekend is the "big move" for me, so I'll be on and off sporadically. In addition to being busy playing with cardboard boxes and practicing my parallel parking (on-street parking is the bane of my existence), I may be hampered by my internet access. The Comcast folks aren't due at our new place until Tuesday. If the moving logistics and Comcast cooperate, and if DOOD can put up with me during this weekend without pushing me down a flight of stairs, I should be able to keep up, at the least, with reading your posts. Keep your fingers crossed for me on all accounts.

Have a great, fun-filled, active weekend!

Hello team...hope everyone is doing OK...Sorry to be such a non-entity lately, but sometimes I think I'm drowning. To top it all off, my car died today and I had to wait for a AAA tow. Busy, busy, busy and I just can't catch a break. We'll be moving Child #4 to TN this weekend and while we're doing that, Child #1 and Child #2 will be driving cross country from CA to NC. They should be arriving on my doorstep sometime on Wednesday with a carload of @#%& that will probably never make it up to NY since the car will be staying in NC. My life is such a sit-com.

Debra, Debra......thanks for the lengthy explanation. It sounds like you certainly have your hands full. It's funny, but i think I feel just the opposite. I would be a little miffed, if I knew my ILs were in the area of a race event and didn't show up! Different strokes for different folks. Then again, I don't know YOUR ILs!

I also saw Indiana Jones and really liked it! I was kinda setting myself up to be disappointed, but it was campy and fun. The one thing i didn't like was the "I've got a bad feeling about this" line........I wanted to tell Mr. Lucas that belongs to Star Wars.... and Star Wars only! (it's the one line that is in every SW movie, but always spoken by a different character)

Oops, almost forgot....I have a little sad news to report. A few days ago, I got an email from Jim (Scuba Diver) stating he was really busy and asked to be removed from the team. I am sad to see him leave but told him that Ohana will always welcome him with open arms should he ever change his mind. He was such a faithful poster of his activity also. I'm also sad that I didn't get to meet him at the Minnie (did anyone?) Well at least he was kind enough to let us know what was happening. We keep losing other teammates into pure oblivion with no word at all.....I hope it's not me!

OK, that's it for now....I'll try to post more tomorrow.

Seriously Jeanne - If you would stop threatening to run around naked, maybe our team would have a chance!!! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Debra - So you are moving next week??? I haven't had much time to read all posts indepthly and I think I missed your actual move date. And as for in-laws... oh I could tell stories. My MIL is currently not talking to me. She thinks I took her baby away... and we have been married 10 years!!! Oh and a couple months ago my lovely curly haired princess turned pirate says to her "MY mom says you don't like her". That didn't help matters! :lmao:

Maria - OK, your Wang Chung comment got me giggling!

As for books... I really need to make more time to read non work related material. I have a HUGE pile of books screaming at me to open them. I am still trying finish Chi Running and actually learn something from it!

As for me... BEEN SOOOO BUSY! Tomorrow is the last day of school and I have spent the week running like crazy here and there and everywhere. Plus work is in the busy season and all the crabby complaints are directed towards me. Love that!

BTW - And Bandana Wanters... let me know the quantity and I will start making some more stock and get them sent out!!!!!

Aloha Team Ohana!

Ah, ILs...can be a blessing, can be a curse. I guess we're lucky if we get a mix of both!

Jen -- I don't know why that phrase stuck in my head. Every once in awhile a one-hit wonder will do that. Just another indication I'm getting dated. I had to explain to ds the meaning behind the phrase "jump the shark". I remember being afraid Fonzie wouldn't make it...:rolleyes1

Jeanne -- pixiedust: for the care repair, I hope everything is fixed soon. And also :moped: safe travels for your young'uns. I'm sorry Jim has left us. I promise to wear clothes if the rest of you will stick around!

Debra -- Oh, my FIL just isn't very bright...and not much of a DGF either (as my SIL says, "he was a terrible father, so I don't know why we expected he'd be any better as a GF"). DOOM actually considers his stepfather more of a father than the moron who donated sperm -- and the DSF treats our son better, too. I'm sure we could swap some doozie stories (and on slow days, I'm sure we will! :rotfl2:) Best of luck with the big move action, I'm sure you will come through with flying colors!

Just in case I drove Team Ohana away, I promise no more tirades, no nudity, and lots of Team :grouphug: As Mr. Roarke would say, "Smiles everyone, Smiles!"

A big  to Johanna, Mel, Corinna, Nancy, Julie, Richard, and all the other cousins!

Maria

Seriously Jeanne - If you would stop threatening to run around naked, maybe our team would have a chance!!! :rotfl2:

OMG, Jen....too funny....maybe that's it! It sounds like you are even busier than I am. i keep telling myself it will calm down soon.

Thanks for all the support, everyone.

I'll be back Monday. Don't forget to post those minutes and miles for this week (AND last week's if you haven't already......shame, shame!) I'll combine the 2 weeks when I get back. Team Ohana is going to be so AWESOME!

Guys, I'm so sorry - I've been kind of having a hard time with the logging lately. It's lame and I'm sorry and I'll do my best to get 3 weeks worth of miles posted in the next day or so.

May has hit me hard and with a vengence. Still contending with the dog's broken toedness, DH's play rehearsal, the impending move of his business, end of school madness, making plans for future travel including the WDW marathon weekend and the princess 1/2 weekend. And on Wednesday, the boys and I all passed our Kung Fu belt tests - I'm now up to Purple, which I can hardly believe. I've got a very proud Blue belt and a VERY VERY proud 4 1/2 year old with a white belt. I mean, he is SUPER excited.

It's not letting up for a few more days. I've been walking the dog 2 miles every day, 40 minutes, so I've got something to contribute. And I'll be darned - I don't think I even posted the double miles from my double 5K weekend. :faint: I kept starting the post and kept getting called away, distracted what have you.

I feel like I'm letting the team down in terms of timeliness BUT, I am not leaving the family or vanishing forever either. :grouphug:

Hola Team Ohana!
Julie -- I am so happy we have Spring, finally! It seems like the weather has really broken, and I could not be happier! :dance3:

Maria, are you enjoying yet another beautiful day today? Sadly, I won't have time for a run today. I'll get to run tomorrow in the rain. :sad2:

Debra, I wish I could say that I had a well-thought out training plan in place, or that I was even following some sort of 10% rule, but that's not the case. I just try to run a little further than I ran the time before. :confused3 My DH is going to help me come up with a real training plan sometime this summer.

Good luck with the move. :goodvibes I hope it goes smoothly and that your parallel parking practice goes well. I hate parallel parking with a fiery hate!

Hello to all the rest of my 'Ohana cousins! Have a great weekend!

Greetings people!

Debra Glad you found a new place. Hopefully it will be a happy place! ::yes:: I have no fitness plans. My fitness plan will be decided in oh...about two weeks when I go back to the orthopedist. Boo.

Jeanne What part of TN is child #4 moving to? I have a bunch of friends living around the Oak Ridge area. I don't really know TN at all but I know they live there!

Jen Last day of school already? Wow. Schools here still have another 3 weeks to go! But I guess the kiddies probably start back again in late August?

Corinna Congrats on the new belt! Purple is a pretty color.

LOSTIES How about that finale?! Jeremy Bentham?! It was a great episode. One of the best of all times. I liked it in that it answered quite a few questions and I don't really feel like it was that big of a cliffhanger. Yes we don't know what happens to quite a few of the Losties, but it was a satisfying finale for me anyway.

Me Still in PT. Had a rather disappointing conversation with the therapist this week - with him saying that he's going the conservative route w/ therapy for now to let it heal blah blah blah and that there is a risk that I may never be able to run more than 2-3 miles at a clip which is NOT what I wanted to hear. I know tons of people probably have this surgery and go out and run, but it is still a bummer to hear. To compensate, I went and saw the Sex and the City movie and loved it!:thumbsup2:
