Team 6 - Team Ohana - Check in and introduce!

Robert: Wow I've been obsessing over your website for the past week or so since I agreed to get into this whole running thing...and now I find out I'm on your team! So cool! Good luck with your surgery!!!

Jen: Today was the first time I've ever gone to a gym on my lunchbreak, and I was about to convince myself about 3/4 of the way through my walk/run that I should just cut it short so I could get back to work earlier (heheh...not that I was making excuses or anything :rolleyes1 ) and then I figured "I bet Jen made it to the gym today and is working out right now, so I should too!"...so thanks for unknowingly getting me through my run! =)

My IPOD-ish thing is a tiny little Zen Stone (which is apparently similar to a shuffle)...it doesn't have a screen, but I bought an arm band for it so it's perfect for my workouts (and I only have one podcast on it right now, so I don't have to worry about finding the song I want).

Robert - What kind of surgery are you having? How did I miss this?
This procedure is having a biopsy(like my 1st surgery last week) of good cartilage from the knee. This is taken to the lab and they regrow my cartilage for 5 weeks. Second surgery(full surgery- no scope) takes a piece of shin sheath to act as a cap as they inject my regrow cartilage cells. The recovery is like Microfracture surgery but at least it is my real cartilage and not a weaker secondary cartilage. The lab link is
http://www.carticel.com/patients/whattoexpect/implant-procedure.aspx .

Recovery is months(full recovery 9-12-16 months) so DL 1/2(out), ToT, and 09 Goofy iffy. Will be at all the races. Hope to be back for training in Summer 09 and 2010 Goofy.

If I do nothing, I will continue to have issues and possible knee replacement in 10 yrs:(

Planning for 3/27 surgery date if everything goes well(including insurance paying for it)

vscohen: I am glad my site is helping you :)

WOW! Sometimes insurance sucks....Hope everything with the surgery, recovery and insurance goes well!

Still feeling kinda bad...I will see how I feel throughout the day and will go to my cycle class today during my "lunch break". The girl who teaches it is really the EQ of cycle class. She puts the "Whop Chow" down on me every week...yet I still come back.:confused3 That may say more about me than anything though.

corinnak - It is hard for me to run on the TM and watch TV too. I have to focus on 1 thing and breath...kinda like having a baby... That is why I run outside as much as I can. But I live in Charlotte, NC where it was 75f yesterday....:yay:

Looks like everyone is doing great on miles. I haven't posted what I am doing on the disboards...but I will post at the end of the week. I post on my BT site and tally them from there (I have a link in my siggy). The sick thing has messed me up though...I hate missing WOs.

Just a quickie because I am on the run again!

Christa: feel better soon ......you are our star athelete!

I feel like I am going to let everyone down this week with my miles. Unfortunately this has been one of those weeks when life gets in the way. I haven't gotten too many of my walks in, but I do have some XT which will give us hours. I plan to sign up for a half-marathon in April so that should get me back on track.

Have an awesome day, everyone!

Robert - that sounds like quite a procedure. How cool is it that they can grow your own cartilage for you! That's got to be tough to be planning to sit out of so many races you would love to do, but ultimately, it sounds like it will be worth it if you can avoid years of issues followed by replacement surgery.

Christa - your BT site is amazingly cool.

Somehow the distance always seems to go faster for me outside - not sure if it is perception or a difference of opinion between the TM and the Garmin, but whatever it is....my SIL lives in Charlotte. Your weather sounds perfect for running right now! I believe we are currently on our way back to the single digits. When the weather is cold, the days are short and the kids are young, I'm grateful for the treadmill, but I'd rather be running outside in 75 degrees, I must say!

Hope you feel well enough to enjoy your cycling smackdown today and that you feel completely better soon!

Vanessa and Mel - your MP3's sound cool. It would be nice to have a little screen, I'll grant you. And the Zen Stone sounds so....soothing and neato cool.

Denny - rock on! Those are some nice miles, especially while traveling. Have a safe trip home!

Debra - I'm no sure I have a Goofy in me! That distance is just kind of.......daunting! As for running - people walk faster than I run, but I enjoy it so there it is. :) The pace run - I am not really fully clear on what all these terms even mean yet - the training plan I'm doing calls for a pace run but it kind of seems like back week 4 of C25K but a little faster than the first time around.

Jeanne - there is no letting any of us down. I think we're all doing the best that we can, but everyone is going to have rough weeks or even months from time to time. Nobody gets left behind.....or forgotten.......OR made to feel inadequate when life gets in the way. :grouphug:

Morning everyone. I have been training all week with doing a wide variety of activites. Between the team challenge and trying to lose the extra pounds I gained last year training for the Mickey, I hope it keeps me on track. The more I work out the more I can eat according to WW.

Pixie dust to those of you not feeling well. pixiedust:

I'm impressed with those of you that go to the gym during your lunch. Is there a gym right where you work? It would be a 15 minute ride to the gym each way for me, workout, take a shower and get back to work. I would need a 2 hr lunch break.

I have a SanDisk M230 512MB MP3 Player which I bought for under $20 on buy.com. It works for me as it also has an FM radio so I can use it at the gym to watch TV.

Have a great day everyone.

Nancy

Aloha!

Last night I did stick with it and do my weights after church. I found a show on the History channel, and it passed fairly quickly. We were looking for Sasquatch in Canada. As you can tell, I am easily entertained:rolleyes1 Nope, we're not sure we found him...but maybe:scared1:

Tonight I need to do an hour on the TM after I get everything settled at home. DH has a meeting tonight, so I'm the adult on duty -- ds's homework, dinner, shower, etc., laundry -- you name it, I'll be making sure it happens. It's going to be a privilege to work out tonight, so I'm looking forward to it. Then I get to watch Lost -- it's all good.

Nancy -- I also could never manage to work out at lunch. I do try to walk when it's warm, but I'm not going anywhere near fast enough to call it a pace. :cool1:

Corinna -- What a positive voice you are! Thanks for cheering everyone on!:cheer2: I'm going to try to delete on my ipod tonight. It sounds so simple, Thanks!

Jeanne -- What Corinna said -- there's no letting anyone down. Some of us on our best weeks (say, me) cannot complete what Christa does on a bad week. We're all just doing the best we can -- and this is Team Family, we're all in this together!:grouphug:

Christa -- Here's hoping you feel much better each day, and I bet you do a great job at your spinning class!:woohoo:

Robert -- Still sending you :wizard:, 'cause it can't hurt!

Vanessa -- The Zen Stone sounds like such a neat name, way more fun than a "shuffle"!:)

Debra -- Great job with the walking, it all counts!:thumbsup2

Mel -- Well, after 1 weight workout, I am not sore. I guess we'll see as I start to do more and it becomes a habit. :p

Denny -- You are doing great! I would never manage that much and travel, too!:yay:

Jen -- You totally rock!:rockband: Great job!

Shell -- I think I'm going to tell dh I want a stability ball for Valentine's Day. It's better than the coffeemaker he's telling me I'm getting (he's the one who drinks coffee).

Keep it up Team, we are doing great!:jumping1:

Just a quickie because I am on the run again!

Have an awesome day, everyone!

I thought we couldn't talk like that on here?

By the way Jeanne dear the latest issue of RW has a piece on bare racing.

Helpful Panda:hippie:

I did get to cycle class today and we had a sub....:rotfl: So I acted up and slacked...nah JK!
She was hardcore! we climbed the whole time...I am not kid'n. I had my resistance up as far as it would go and the woman was yelling for us to up it...so I may have had it up too far. But it was fun...in a sick and twisted kind of way.

Jeanne - You are AWESOME! dont worry...you wont let anyone down...My miles are off this week too.

Robert: Like I said, I hope your insurance works out. I am selfishly happy to know that you'll be around for the races if if you're not competing. I'm looking forward to meeting you!

Jeanne: None of that talk here. The challenge is just a social excuse to get together and encourage each other (or egg each other on, depending on what works)! WOs are part of your life, and sometimes other things have to--and should--take precedence!

Corrina: There's a little Goofy in each of us....I've got time to convince you, and if I could be convinced YOU can be convinced.

Nancy: I second your being impressed with the lunch workout! Lunch has me thinking about, well, lunch. What kind of activities are you doing?

Maria: Tangential thought: Anderson Cooper has apparently done a series on the search for the Yeti. Silly man, I could have told him the Yeti's in AK, at EE. You're a Lostaway? Cool! Me too, as long as they stay away from the Jack/Kate/Sawyer tiredness. I have to admit, though, each season I hope for a little more Lord of the Flies action. Anyone else out there Lostaways? Tiberius? Vanessa?

Christa: Yeah, you may be sick and twisted. But, dang it, you're giving me something to shoot for! You rock!

As for me: I've started to calculate my Miles/Minutes so that I don't have to spend a lot of time after tomorrow's WO. I'm a little disappointed because this weekend's illness threw me off my R/W C25K progress. On the other hand, when I signed up for this game, I hadn't been counting any miles put in on the elliptical, stationary bikes, etc, as part of my weekly estimates. So it looks like it'll all balance out. In fact, my mileage may dump a bit as I get back to the TM & pavement.

Have a great-end-of-the-week, Ohana! Rest well, eat well, move well, live well, and be well!

My miles are a bit off this week also. First I thought I was just busy and slacky, but now I am sick. So earlier in the week I think my lack of motivation was the on-set of sickness. My kids gave it to me... little buggers. My throat is sore, have a headache and fever... just all over crumminess. But that does mean I get to go to bed early... right???

So my goal tonight is to do something that doesn't make me want to hurl. I decided that going to bootcamp class probably wouldn't be the best thing for me at this time!!!

Once the time changed, I started going out running one day at week at lunch. It's nice that there is one changing room w/ shower in the building I work in. The problem is that there's 3 of us in the building who work out during lunch and it's a 1 person room. At least it's only one day a week...

well it *was* one day a week. I tweaked my knee something good 2 weeks ago and have been slacking a bit. Haven't run at all. The only thing I can do with no pain is ride the bike so I've been doing that in the gym instead. Le sigh. Not working out as much as I did (like at least 1.5 hours most days a week) is making me antsy. Like I need something to do, but I don't have anything to do!

Judgement call: Rude or Funny?

So you know how all the teams' miles/minutes posting threads are linked to the first weekly thread post now? Wouldn't it be hysterical to link all the other teams to our posting thread, so they posted minutes for us?!? :lmao:

Of course, the mess to clean it all up afterward would be ugly ;)

I'm actually proud of the fact that I've done at least some form of exercise every day for the last 5 days. Today's my first real rest day with nothing.

Debra...my Lord of the Flies moment: nearly ruined my Cocoa Puffs in 9th grade when Piggy's head got all splattered on the rocks.

Jen...go to bed, rest, no hurling necessary. :wizard: for kid cooties.

Shell...that's an impressive workout schedule. I would like to have half the motivation to workout 1.5 hours a day. What types of stuff do you do?

Jeanne...no one's letting anyone down. We'll all have some weeks that are bigger than others. BTW there is a Dare to Be Bare 5K coming up at a nudist resort near here :rolleyes1

Christa...You're hardcore dude!

The thought of working out during lunch was insane to me as well...before this week =) (well, to be fair, the thought of working out AT ALL was insane to me before last week...forget running a marathon...)

There's a little gym in my office building that I could work out at, but there's only a few machines and no shower, so I'm really not that interested. We actually ended up joining Bally's last week because they were having a really good deal through the Discovery Health Plan Challenge, and it's worked out really well for me. The Bally's is about 10 minutes from where I work..so I can't work out more than a half hour over my lunchbreak, and I have to be fast about getting changed and showered afterwards, but it's manageable. (I also have a flexible employer that doesn't care if I'm a few minutes late getting back from lunch). The environment is also COMPLETELY different at lunchtime than at night - much less crowded, and mostly retired people walking or swimming - so I don't feel pressured!

I wouldn't do it every day, but I have class Wednesday and Thursday nights, so if I'm working out at all, it's got to be at lunch. (I'm NOT a morning person, and by the time I get home from class, I'm too tired)

As for anyone who ever considers joining a Bally's, you have to know what you're getting into before going in (which I did, but I can see where people would have problems if they didn't). Our contract is a THREE YEAR commitment (and I get the feeling that is standard). For me, that's a good thing - if I join a gym that has month-to-month billing, I'd probably quit after a few months. In this case since I know I'm going to be paying for three years whether I use it or not, I'm GOING to use it. (Gives me a good excuse to try out lots of Disney marathons :lovestruc ) But I really had to do a lot of soul searching before deciding I could live with a three year contract.

Just a quick checkin this morning. We are heading to MCO for a 6:30am flight to Chicago for a gymnastics meet.

This week was light for me. Tapering a little and a sore foot.

21.76 miles. 3 hours 43 minutes for the week.

Good luck team. Back on Monday.

Aloha Team!

I have had such a loooong week, working full time and taking a 24 hour CEU class for my occupational license does not make for a happy week!

I fell so far behind on this board, that even after I read it this morning I can't remember most of what I just read.:confused3

Fortunately for Team Ohana, I did not fall behind on my running or swimming this week.:woohoo: I will be making a report on the posting thread after today's swim. Even better, after taking it easy for the last few weeks, I need to start upping my miles for a March HM and an April 25K trail run, and possibly get ready for a May sprint tri....still thinking about the last one.

Mel: You asked for it...the workout schedule.

This is my "winter" workout schedule because once summer comes, I start playing softball and it just all sort of rearranges...

Mon & Wed: I play volleyball and the matches are about an hour (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less but it works out to an hour). If we have an early match, I go run for about 20min/2miles. If we have one of the later matches, I usually go running for about 30min/3miles and then do 30min. of weights. The Monday league is way more competitive than Wed. so Monday's workouts are usually a bit easier - I'll go for an easy run - whereas Wednesdays I'll do speed/interval workouts. Also every 5 weeks we have a volleyball doubleheader since there are an odd amount of teams in the league (and which just so happens to occur this coming Monday)

Tues: This is my "shortest" day. I usually do about 20min cardio (rowing if the machine is available, if not then the elliptical or bike) and then 40ish minutes of weights

Thurs: 30min swimming laps, followed by 1hr water aerobics class

Fri: Until about 2 weeks ago when the knee got messed up, I was running for 45-50min at lunch and then doing 40 minutes of weights after work

Sat/Sun: This is the wild card of the bunch. It usually works out 2 weekends a month I workout one day, 1 weekend a month both days, and 1 weekend a month no days. Depending on how many miles I got in running during the week, I'll either go out for an hour just to walk or do some combo run and then walk. If it's raining I do a DVD. Then in the afternoon I fire up the Wii and play DDR. That game is soooo addicting to me b/c I <3 to dance so that's an easy 1.5 hours of game play. I could play more, but usually by then my legs are pretty tired and I start to mess up the steps and I can't stand getting bad grades.

Then Monday comes and I start all over! With the busted knee I'm way cut back from this, really only playing volleyball (with a brace) and substituting the bike where I can for the running since that is the only thing that doesn't hurt at all. I can still do upper body weights (which I'm doing tonight). Last week was ok for me, it was a good break from everything. This week, however, I'm like "Let's get going already!!!" I can't wait for it to feel better. I'm hoping it will, trying to rest and avoid doctors at all costs. We have about a month and a half left of volleyball season and my Monday team is doing really well and I would hate to not be able to play anymore this year!

Wow, you guys are so impressive! Great job with all the miles/hours!

Just a reminder: PLEASE post your week's totals on the other "Post your Miles/hours here" thread. It's OK to report them here as chat, but if they don't make it to the other thread, I may end up missing something. Also, alot of times I am completely away from my computer all weekend so I may not get to posting your stuff until Monday. Please keep an eye on the spreadsheet and if you don't see the previous week's activity by Monday morning, just give me a kick in the butt and let me know. Thanks!

I was actually better than I thought this week. I didn't have alot of miles, but got in lots of cross-training. I also played 3 half-rounds of golf and since I always walk pushing my golf cart (over a very hilly course) I think that should count for XT as well.

Didn't want to clog up the miles thread, but we walked/ran over 2 miles in half an hour at our workout tonight...which means, I totally believe the 13K in october is do-able now! (It sounds like so little compared to what some of you guys are doing, but in my first week, it's not half bad! Also I'd say that keeping the pace up for 8 miles is a lot different than 2...but included in that half hour was a 5 minute warm up walk and a 5 minute cool down walk...and we have 9 months to go....I'm SO EXCITED!)

Good Morning, Team!

Just a quick hi! I finally posted on the miles/hours thread, so we are in for week 1. Wow, you guys did great! I did my better than I realized -- it's kind of opened up my eyes to what I should be losing weight-wise. What a reality check for my eating. I'm going to work very hard on that this week, while trying to just gradually nudge up my biking times and long walk.

Vanessa -- You are doing great! I think that is a phenomenal first week, who knows what you will accomplish!:woohoo:

Jeanne -- Thanks again for being our captain, we need you!:cloud9:

Shell -- You are a workout machine! Glad you're on our team!:dance3:

Tiberius -- Wow, you did manage alot with your schedule. You're a great role model!:wizard:

Scuba Diver -- Your light week seemed like quite a bit to me!:cheer2:

Mel -- Congrats on the consistency! This is the first week I've had any in a really long time, and it does feel great!:thumbsup2

Jen -- I really hope you are feeling better. Be gentle with yourself. These bugs going around are nasty:sick:

Debra -- I am a Lostie, but I just watch the show -- i.e. I don't try to dissect theories, etc. I also could do with less Kate and her entourage. Give me a good Hurley, Locke or Sayid episode, and I'm much more intrigued.

Christa -- You are a phenomenal athlete, but so down to earth. What a find you are!:lovestruc

Dave -- Just keep spending your time at the computer instead of out walking...it's fine with us!:rotfl:

Ok, a new week starts today. I'm off for my long walk, let's get psyched for the week ahead!:yay:

Maria
