Teacup Ettiquite

rode the teacups this morning. There was a less than 5 minute wait, you could walk straight on. We had another family though crash our teacup. They jammed the three of them in to the point where you could not move and the attendant struggled to get the door closed. I was pretty ticked off. I would never dream of jumping in a cup others were already in. Is this the done thing, or were these people just rude?

Maybe they just thought that's what you're supposed to do? There's no explicit rule that I'm aware of so people probably just do their best to follow what they assume the rules are..

I'm just thinking they didn't know any better. It's one of those social rules that not everyone knows about. I'd say ride again and spread out with your arms out so no one else can get on or just stare people down as they walk near you, that might scare them off.

I haven't ridden the teacups in years, but we never had another party try to crash our cup. Even during busy times, the CM assigned each party to its own separate cup. Even a single rider or a couple never had to share as far as I remember.

Now if some costumed characters wanted to ride with us, they'd be most welcome.

Only once in all my visits to WDW or DL has a character been in the same vehicle. That was Goofy (and companion CM) in the next car of the People Mover.

We had that happen at Disneyland. The family did not speak very good English and I think they just did not understand to get their own cup.

When DD was 5, we also had a Mom at the entrance ask if we would mind taking her 2 under age 7 kids with us, as they really wanted to ride the teacups, but the teacups made her sick. We said yes and DD absolutely loved having the other kids with her. It was fun!

We had a couple do that to my daughter on Splash - they jumped into the front row of the log, and being larger people, actually squished her into the side so much it hurt. I tried to flag the CM to not let us go, so we could get out, but she ignored us and sent us on our way. Once we got off, I found a supervisor and explained what happened. She offered us a free pass, but my daughter was so bruised she didn't want to go on again. This was many years ago when the logs didn't have the lap bars, just the handrail.

I generally agree that this is probably the case of the other family didn't know that it's considered odd to jump into the ride vehicle with another family. I doubt there was any malicious intent or that they were deliberately trying to crowd your family. The only times I've had strangers get into the same ride vehicle with me was when the CMs were trying to fully loading the ride vehicles and filling every available seat.

I would have just politely explained teacup protocol to them and ask them to get their own teacup. I can't have the teacup spinning at all or I feel sick so there's no way I'd want to ride with anyone except family who knows this.

Happened to us on the AK Safari. A family behind us squeezed into our row with us. Mind you, we were a group of 4 and they were, too. LOL. Thankfully the CM got them off, but it took a minute or two since there was a language barrier. I think they were confused because at safari they line up the "next" group behind each other near boarding. I never had teacup crashers before though.

Wow. I don't know how many times I've ridden the tea cups (many many many times) and this has never happened to us. I don't even know what I'd do!

I'd say clueless or dumb luck over rude. I'm pretty sure the family didn't intentionally want to crowd the teacup unless they liked that particular color or something...

Rude is people taking middle of the row seats in Philharmagic forcing everyone else to crawl around them.

What an odd thing. Awkward, but almost certainly a matter of misunderstanding rather than deliberate rudeness. You are correct, though. Proper tea cup etiquette is that each party gets their own cup.

Agreed. And that is when I "squeeze" past them. Did I mention I am Pooh sized . . . While I don't go out of my way to step on them, I do insist on my moving down the row.

It would never occur to me to do that. I had DD2 with me in February. We could not find a free cup when we were let in. I was walking all around with my small child. CMs just had us come back in and wait for the next one. They didn't appologize and didn't let us in first for the next round anyway. It doesn't seem like they are too careful about making sure everyone gets off or that people don't split their party into more cups. It's kind of a free for all in there.
