It looks like I'm going to be only subbing this year - applied for 50+ jobs & not a call yet (same thing for my friends as well - boo!)

Anyway - I'm planning on passing out my info - but I need your help.

Do you prefer a bus card size or more like a 4x6? Would you like it with a magnetic back?

Have you seen a great looking bus card from a sub - tell me about it - the saying on it - or have any idea of one... PLEASE share

When we are going to be out, we log onto a subfinder website that is run through the district. We can pick the sub we want from a dropdown menu or we can just leave that section blank and then they find one for us. I usually pick the subs that I've either had before and they did a good job or subs that other teachers have had good experiences with.

When we call the sub line we can request a specific person.

I would think a business card would be good, and cheaper.

I used cardstock. I think I used a template for business cards and printed it on bright yellow cardstock. That way I didn't end up with 1000 cards I didn't need and could print more when I needed to, and it was much cheaper. I sub elementary grades so I use a cute teacher clip art to catch the eye. I put my phone numbers because we use subfinder but a teacher can call a sub directly to arrange it and then put it in the system as a pre arranged assignment.

I would say that a magnet would be a good idea. I did see sub cards attached to filing cabinets a number of times.

ETA: I think I would do some with magnets and some without. That way they can keep one in their wallet if they need to call someone from home.

Not in our district, the principal has a list of subs they use. They teacher can request someone but there no way to promise they will get who they want.

I ordered free business cards on Vista Print and only paid for shipping. They were plain with Substitute Teacher and my info. When I would leave a note for the teacher at the end of the day I would paper clip one to the note. I got so many repeat jobs that way and usually the teachers were calling me ahead of time to set it up rather than those 5am calls. Often a teacher would ask me for another card so that they could keep one at home and one at school.

Yes, they do, and a substitute cannot pass out cards unless they are on that list.

We can set up a substitute on our own and log it through the subfinder, or we can let the subfinder assign one to us. I prefer to set up my own, because I want to be assured that the substitute will explicitly follow my plans so my students don't miss a day of learning. I only have a handful of people that I'm willing to use.

Well, I've done over 200 resumes and cover letts - 24 interviews and nothing as well! We still have about 6 more weeks so I'm still hoping.

As for business cards, I personally wouldn't bother. I would though amp up your LinkedIn profile.

I'm student teaching this coming Fall so maybe I'm not qualified to answer but my mom has been teaching for 30 years and I see what she does.

In her department, they have a list of subs with their "favorites" highlighted.

I would think that a magnet might be nice-- teachers could put it on their home fridge if they really liked you, or possibly somewhere in the department.

We are free to use any sub who is registered with our district. Teachers usually call the sub directly to see if they're available for the dates they need covered. If they are, the teacher goes into the subcaller system and assigns the job to that particular sub. If no one they know is available, they can enter a request and get whomever accepts the job. Sometimes this works out well and you get a really great sub. Other times..... Let's just say that teachers prefer to get a sub they already know.

Regarding the OP's question, a regular-sized business card is probably fine. There's also a white board in our staff room where subs can write their names and phone numbers.

Our subs have to be approved by central administration. When we're going to be out, we call the sub line and they go down the list and call people on the list.

In theory, teachers get no say about who subs in their room. However, I've let my principal know that there are certain subs I don't want in my room, and she's made sure that they're placed elsewhere when I'm out. I know that other teachers in my school have done the same thing. So, we're not choosing who is placed in our rooms, but rather who isn't.


ETA: In over 20 years, there has only been one person who I have requested not to be assigned to my class, either in my place or in place of my assistant. Fortunately, the vast majority of teachers who work as subs in our district are extremely capable and do a wonderful job.

Just a business card works with all your information to get a hold of you and if you have a sub/or employee number listed on it that helps. I kept all my sub cards on my bulletin board stapled to a sheet of paper.

Our district puts all jobs through subfinder but we can put who we want in the system. If we have a sub we love, we often share our "preferred" list of subs with the office and other staff so we can ensure we get the same awesome subs throughout the year.

It is also good for the students to be familiar with subs. It seems like the better they know them, the more respectful they are.

Yes @ dd's school & the other school in this city the teachers pick their own subs. Not sure about the neighboring city yet.

OMGOODNESS! That's AWFUL! 24 interviews!!!! I'd say you are a pro @ interviewing by now, you could send all your tips my way. (not that I'm gonna be called!)

Thanks for the tips & yep, was planning on buying from Vista Print.

Just wish I could come up with something catchy that'll make me stand out @ the schools where noone knows me. Other than my degree & certification.

And yes- all subs here have to go thru the county 1st to be approved & get a subcard then you have to take your subcard to schools of your choice to get put on their list.
