The irony that Disney shut down the one animation division that seemed to still be making great movies, such as Lilo and Stitch and, to a lesser extent, Brother Bear, the same week that it openened up Teacher's Pet should not be lost on anyone.

It's emblematic of all that's wrong with the company, one that has a moral compass that points to true profit (or at least low "cost of goods sold" metrics) and that has rejected the same family fare, and those who consume it, in favor of a cheaper, easier to produce product. That product, really more like an arch, childless, intellectual's idea of a kid's movie (the same ones who buy Cranium as gifts), is Teacher's Pet. The movie may make a great midnight cult flick someday, but it's lousy for a night out with the young ones.

Pet is based upon an unpopular television series on the Disney channel that was bestowed a lot of awards (including Emmys and BAFTAs) by smart people who recognized the look from somewhere, pehaps that article in "The New York Times" or "Entertainment Weekly." It certainly wasn't nominated by kids. The style is reminiscent of the creepy Betty Boop cartoons of the 1930s though based upon the work of Gary Baseman who does lots of design work which is popular with people who don't hate it, people like me. ........

Thanks for the link to the review. I'd already decided not to go to the movies to see this one. Now I know not to rent it when it comes out on DVD, either!

Dh and I took the kids to see it yesterday. we didn't know anything about it. But since it was a Disney movie, we figured it would be okay. It was the worst movie we have ever paid to see.
The family beside us walked out.

All the review in the paper said it was entertaining. RottenTomatoes.com said it was good. IT WAS HORRIBLE. The kids liked it I guess, but it was painful for my wife and I to watch. The animation was lousy (but true to the cartoon that I have never seen I guess) and the 70 minutes lasted longer than all three Lord of the Rings Movies put together. Don't waste your money. I was just looking for something to do on a cold day but I should have looked harder.

I took the kids to see this today. And although I watch it with them at home and enjoy it. the movie was painful for me to watch. I almost fell asleep twice. Both 3 year olds were very fussy during the show typically they sit and do not move during the movie. this time they were so fidgety. Although now they claim it was great. We typically see disneys movies at least twice. You could not drag me back to this one!

I haven't heard that about shutting down an animation department. What exactly happened?

Wow, I'm glad we dodged that bullet! My husband wanted to take the kids to a movie yesterday and the only kid's movie out was "Teacher's Pet". But when he asked them, neither one wanted to see it---even a little. Sounds like they were right on the money!
