I have a question that I posted on another thread that I would like you guys to give me feed back on please. I have really been bothered by this since I moved from the third grade to the first grade. Thanks.

What or where is the question?

I'm working toward my degree in Middle Grades Education (5-9) in the areas of Social Studies and Language Arts....Students Teach in Spring of 2008.

This has been a lot of fun! I'm so excited about teaching, I can't wait!

Cheers,
Josh

I didn't know you could specialize in the middle grades -- that's interesting!

I teach pre-k and absolutely love it! It makes going to work a joy.

Here is my question I started on another thread. IT was under dale_e_jr_fan_8's posts.

I am a student teacher in my final semester of school. Last semester I spent part of my time with third graders and the other part of my time with first graders. I had a really hard time developing any kind of a rapport with my third graders and I have to start this semester back with them. I really want to establish myself with them because last semester I had to students tell their parents that I did not like them, and the parents expressed that concern to the teacher. It came up in my evaluation as a great concern. I did not have any problems at all with my first grade class and am looking forward to spending time with them. I sure would like some imput from other teachers on how to go about establishing rapport with my third graders. I will be with them five days a week starting Jan 17 and am not looking forward to it.

I started working on my attitude change today, although it didnt help that the kids were acting bad because myself and another teacher were in there subbing this afternoon.

I think the main thing to remember is to take some time and just talk to them. Not about school or homework or math problems, but just about what they like and what they're interested in. Let them tell you stories about their life and share some of yours with them as well. I am teaching a class of all African American children who are living in a very high poverty neighborhood who are growing up in the south. I am white, middle-upper middle class, and grew up in the north. Can't get much different and we're making it work.

Example, Monday mornings we talk about our weekend and I told them how I had such a tiring week the week before that on Saturday I stayed in my comfy clothes all day and watched TV and movies and ate popcorn and played Playstation. They laughed so hard that a 'grown up/teacher' played Playstation. I think they are more open to what you have to say if they feel they can trust you and relate to you.
