Teachers: how about this gift?

I guess because he's a man, it's harder to find a teacher gift, so he tends to get lots of Starbucks cards.

I suggest bookstore gift cards for anyone who might be wondering on a good alternative.

I am a teacher and although I would appreciate your thoughtfulness...I'm not a coffee drinker and I don't eat anything from students unless it is in it's original packaging.

The best gift I receive is a heartfelt thank you note from a parent or student. I don't feel it is necessary for you to spend your money on me...gratitude does not have a price tag.

I have to say I'm surprised at all the teachers who don't eat the homemade goodies. I understand if its a matter of calorie control but I'm wondering if the Cape Cod turtles DD makes every year are just going to waste. They are easy but somewhat expensive to make and I'd hate to think they were going in the trash. Well, I guess that's another thread with another poll

I am not a teacher, but I do not eat any homemade food not made by specific people. I have seen too many of my friends' and coworkers' houses and cooking habits in action . It isn't a calorie issue.

I'm giving Barnes and Noble gc's to our teachers, but I don't understand about giving away Starbucks gc's. There is a lot to buy besides coffee - hot chocolate, sandwiches, baked goods, a nice cheese/fruit lunch...

Starbucks also sells mugs, CD's, books, and other trinkets. I suppose a teacher could regift it and nobody would ever know

I like the gift card, but like others have mentioned, Starbucks is an aquired taste. I don't know where you are, but a Wawa gift card is great or Dunkin Donuts, Target...

Homemade items? NO WAY! Why, you ask?
#1- When I was a kid, I went to a friends house and a roach fell off the ceiling into a pot of spaghetti sauce.
#2- A lot of people don't wash their hands after leaving a public bathroom. I'm sure many more don't when they're at home.
#3- I saw an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos, where someone was videotaping through the window of a grandparent(?). The lady was making pie crusts. She took out her dentures and proceeded to make the ridges in the pie crust with them.

For male teachers we've given a car wash kit. It was a metal tin from turtle wax with car wash, wax, gloves, sponges, etc. I figure that unless you live in a city, everyone has a car and eventually it does need cleaning. And besides, it sure as heck beat a Yankee candle.

I say yes to the gift card, but no way to the homemade items.

I can't tell you how many times I've heard students talking about the bugs and mice running around their homes.

I had one student bring in pictures of her family cooking together. The family cat was in each picture standing on the table or counter top. .yuck, yuck, yuck


I only eat homemade items if I'm good friends with the family.

My husband and daughter are both teachers and I can tell you all that they appreciate anything that their students give them. The absolute best present is a card with a note from the student/parent telling them how much they are appreciated and what good teachers they are (and I have to say even though they are my family, they are great teachers). Both of them work in the same school district that has a wide social class from some of the richest people to the poorest people. One of the best stories is when my husband was out with cancer. His students wrote him a letter telling him how much they missed him and to hurry and get better. So IMHO these are the best gifts.

Okay, I totally understand why someone wouldn't want to eat homemade goodies. I think I should go for the Barnes and Noble gift card/Godiva chocolate combo. Less time consuming, too.

My DD15 (a junior) has 8 teachers. We have gotten each of them $5.00 gift cards...except for two of them. They are her favorite teachers so we got them each $10.00 gift cards.

My 2 cousins, brother, 3 neighbors and 4 friends are teachers and none of htem will eat homemade things sent in- they all say they end up in the trash at the end of the day- they all send home lovely notes saying how great they were and how much they enjoyed them of course, but they don't even taste them! Even for our teacher appreciation lunch we have it catered out since not many would eat it if we had parents make the food at their homes!

What's funny is the number of people on the DIS who say that they make homemade goodies and that ALL OF THE TEACHERS LOVE them & rave about them. Well, DUH, of course they say that. No one is going to say, "Yeah I tossed your stuff in the trash"or "I put it in the Teacher's Lounge".

I think the custodians do. There's five of them and they work until pretty late at nite. I remember hearing someone say they get the munchies. I'm sure they do. I get the munchies at night too!

I am not a coffee drinker, so that would be of no use to me. I too am leery of homemade goods. I am a germ-a-phobe though.
But, I appreciate the thought. My sister LOVES getting my gifts that I don't want or won't use
