Teacher Participation......

I said relationship building IS DONE, in the classrroom as well as extra activities.

Whatever....we will all agree to disagree. It is just so funny to me, how people are so rude. People can't disagree with each other, without someone throwing in snide remarks. Little extras come with any job, teaching or not.......

How was I rude? I don't think anyone on this thread is being rude. They just don't agree with you. And you consider that rude??

Just curious, about how much you get involved in your kids school?

I think most posters here, don't.

Um, yeah. Now this is rude.

I'm a teacher. I try and attend at least two sporting events per team per season. I also volunteer to help at the dances. I'm not much of a dancer though.

I do have two children of my own and they have activities that keep us from doing everything. I hope that parents are not holding it against me because I was not at a recent event, because I was at a soccer game for my own children.

Also just to point out, at many recent conferences I have attended, the legal sessions usually cover how teachers should not participate in events that they are not paid to be at. Now, I don't take that as seriously yet, but they really have started stressing it. Which is sad for many students that would love to see their teachers at those events.

I won't comment more, because this thread seems to be a bash against teachers not caring. I have seen quite a few threads that are down on teachers lately. Sad, because most people don't understand that many complaints should go higher up than just the teacher.

No not at all. I was quoting the fact, that I thought you misread.

The rude comment was actually for post #32. That's where the little hairs on the back of my neck went up!:rotfl2: I expect people to disagree with me....this is the DIS! But.......that is exactly why I started the post, to get other views. And I am reading and thinking, about every one of them. I am trying to see a teachers perspective.....it all started to go south at post 32 if you read back!

oh yes, it was my post that contributed to the downfall of this thread!!! :rotfl2::rotfl2::rotfl2:

And I am sure that there are already plenty of "extras" asked of them. From after school meetings, to bringing in their own supplies, to impromptu conferences with parents to spending their free time doing lesson planning that goes above and beyond the curriculum to make it more interesting for the kids. Just because they don't attend your extra event does not mean they don't love kids, nor does it mean they are not doing extras every single day. I love kids, but I would not want to go to a elementary school dance that did not involve my own children.

This is so true!
Teachers need to love being around children or they couldn't survive one day in school. It is an exhausting and demanding job. Most teachers do above and beyond what they are hired to do and generally select importance of 'extras' based on what they feel is important for education in their particular classrooms.

I have not said or implied that teachers don't care. To the contrary.....And....I think it's fabulous, that you try to attend when you are able. That's all our association asks as well. If you can attend, please try to. My sister and her husband are both teachers. I know they care....or they wouldn't have chosen teaching as a profession.:)

Um, yeah. Now this is rude.

And yes, I think a lot of times, people open their mouth to complain about things, that they have no idea what they are talking about. I don't think that's rude. It's just the truth.

Absolutely! I love children! Older, younger....it doesn't matter. I enjoy them at every stage and find them fascinating. I appreciate their thoughts and LOVE to see kids just being kids.:)

Maybe the fact that you truly enjoy these sorts of events if the reason you assume everyone else would feel the same way about them. I can understand that - I'm the same way about the things I enjoy. I just don't get why everyone isn't as thrilled with video games and rollercoasters as I am. :rotfl: But people like different things. I love kids. I love teaching them new things, and I love seeing the looks on their faces when they grasp a new concept for the first time. I don't enjoy spending my free time at school events with other people's kids instead of my own friends and family. I'd rather use my free time for the other things I enjoy.

It's nice that you want the teachers to have fun, and since you find the events fun it makes sense that you'd think the teachers would as well. Hopefully the other perspectives on this thread can help you to understand that the fact that the teachers don't choose to attend your events doesn't mean they don't appreciate all the things the PTA does for the kids. It also doesn't mean they don't like the kids. It just means that they spend every school day with the kids and they would rather use their personal time another way.

And teachers do that all day long:goodvibes

Really? You think it is the TRUTH that most posters on this board aren't involved with their child's school? That they have no idea what they are talking about when it comes to volunteering?

I don't see anything rude about what people are saying, from either side. :confused3 People are responding to other posters, not just what you write. They are simply explaining why they feel the way they do. I'm sorry, but I think you just don't like it because a majority are disagreeing with you. When you ask a debate type question, you need to expect debate type answers.

Trust me...I'm still reading aren't I. I could care less who agrees with me.

You are correct they have. I just always assumed, that teachers love children! But, maybe you're right, it's not fun for them. Perhaps the pay, benefits, pension, holidays are what entice them, as with any other job. But with any job, sometimes "extras" are asked of you and depending on the type of person you are, you will do it because you are asked, or you won't.

Just because a teacher may love children enough to teach them does not mean they want to give up their free time to be with them outside school hours. I am not sure what is so hard about this to understand.

Ummm....again did I say that?? Soooo funny! I think all of you don't like it that I disagree with you. Gets you all hostile!!!

Yes. You did say that;)

I am not hostile in the least bit:confused3 I am just trying to understand why you were miffed that teachers did not come to a dance. Believe me, this is nothing to be hostile about.

Well, it is!

I am not trying to win votes. Difference of opinion, is what makes the world interesting. I just asked for some thoughts about the flip side and all of you run rampant......twisting things to fit! It's amusing!

I think a majority this time are actually on your side!! I will forever be greatful for all that teachers already do for our children (and some of the things they have to put up with...which before anyone jumps I don't mean things mentioned on this thread)! I don't think they get paid anywhere near enough for what they do, or given enough credit for what they do. That is one of the reasons I am so involved in our school, I want to show the teachers how appreciative I am of THEM! So a big THANK-YOU to all the teachers that put their heart and soul into teaching our children!!

Isn't that what you were saying here?

Just curious, about how much you get involved in your kids school?

I think most posters here, don't. Perhaps if they did, you could see where I'm coming from.

Because that's the impression I got from it. Did you mean it some other way?
