Teacher gift question

At my son's preschool our class is all chipping in $20 to get Visa cards for the teacher and her assistant. My son has food allergies and they have been great with them. Would it be odd if I bought some kid books about food allergies to add to the classroom library? Would you wrap them and give them to the teacher? Or should I just hand her a stack? My mom seems to thinking giving the teacher a classroom gift is strange and it should be just for the teacher.

I have given "classroom" gifts before, and the teachers were very grateful! I think you have a great idea. I'd put them in a gift bag and add a note of thanks for being so great about the allergies.

You're not giving it instead of a personal gift (though I think that would be OK too), and you're not giving it as a "show-off" gift on top of the group gift. Your heart is in the right place, so don't let your mom talk you out of it.

I think it's a great idea! I'm sure the teacher will greatly appreciate the additional books for the classroom library, and it's a good way to help her pass information to the kids about your sons allergies.

At our local elementary schools, they encourage the children to purchase a book from the book fair for the classroom library, so I KNOW the teachers love it...otherwise the books in the classroom library come out of the teachers own pocket

We just got info about a book fair at B&N and the teachers have a wish list from there. That confirms my mom is crazy and its a good idea lol.

Thanks for the feedback! This is out firs year in preschool so its a learning experience! I've been out of school for 13 years so my mom's preschool knowledge is rusty and my DH always answers with I don't know lol.

I think the classroom gift is fine. However, I might vary the books. Like maybe one that talks about allergies, and other books that are just fun to read to the class. She probably has a lot of classics, like Dr. Seuss, Eric Carle, so maybe some new titles.

I wouldn't present them as a gift to the teacher (as a gift, they seem kind of self serving). I would also ask if you could donate some books about food allergies before buying them. If other parents starting donating books on pet causes too, that could potentially lead to hassles and controversy for the teacher.

Sorry, I still can't get over the "chipping in $20 for a gift card"! LOL! I've been a teacher for over 25 years, and have never ever ever gotten a gift card for that amount of money! With my current class, that would be $600!! Once, the parents chipped in and I got a $50 gift card to a local restaurant, and I was on Cloud Nine.

I guess I need to move to a wealthier district, huh?? I teach in a rural area where most parents are lower working class.

There is only 9 kids in the class, so each will get $90. They are the sweetest people, I honestly felt like giving them only $10 each is kind of cheap!
