teacher appreciation AND end of year gift?

Okay, I guess I'm just crabby today... just finished a vent about Field Day, checked email and now I want to fuss about a homeroom mom who is asking for $$ for an End of year gift.

We just had Teacher Appreciation week last week! Did a little something every day... included a long letter about how awesome teacher is (not requested)

Doesn't that take the place of an end of year class gift? Or am I just feeling crabby today???

No, at least not in our kids school, but of course if you feel it does then its perfectly fine for you not to contribute.

I'm a room mom for my ds's class and this year we are doing something that isn't going to be costing parents any more money than what they contributed in the beginning of the year.

Teacher Appreciation Day/Week and end of the year gifts are two completely different things. I actually wish that they acknowledged Teacher Appreciation Day earlier in the school year.

I am the room mom for both of my boys classes and believe me....it's not fun having to ask parents for money for gifts, parties, etc. I actually spend a lot of money out of my own pocket to supplement extras and sometimes just go ahead and pay for things myself so I don't have to ask....not because I'm independently wealthy (FAR FROM IT), but because it's just easier than getting the 'not again' feeling or comments or looks from the other parents. Do I have to do this? No. But.....I feel that so many of our teachers are underpaid and underappreciated. We have fabulous teachers at my boys school and it seems like they are forever taking pay cuts and making concessions or paying for classroom supplies out of their own pocket. I have very strong feelings about supporting our teachers and showing them my appreciation.

In my days, gifts weren't given at all, period. Then I had kids. I became a home room mom for several years. Gifts were given independently by the children. Now I'm a grandma and it's gifts several times a year. In a way, I think I would get tired real fast of contributing to all these gifts. I kind of look at it this way. When I worked at the District Attys office trying to get much needed child support for families, I didn't get gifts from those families nor would I have been able to accept them. It was my job. I knew they appreciated it and that's all that mattered.

Me three! At my old school, the teachers actually asked the PTA if they would change teacher appreciation week to February. At that time of year, teachers are usually stressed and there is no end in sight. We also almost always need more supplies.

Our teacher appreciation week is next week. We will only have 18 days of school left at that point, and we will have to store supplies until next year. I just think May is a little late.

OP, in answer to your question, I wouldn't give a gift for both. Bringing in supplies and a card is sufficient for teacher appreciation and end of year gifts are nice, but not expected.

Teacher appreciation week usually coincides with National Day of the Teacher which is typically the first Wednesday in May. At our school it's up to each parent whether they want to give the teacher something at the end of the year. Overall, I think most don't.
