It looks like that I am going to have to give up coffee, it just gives me such indigestion I'm miserable. I've even been using the Simply Smooth decaffenated by Folgers. It's just not simply smooth for me.:sad2:

So, after a cup of tea this morning and no indigestion, I've decided that I'm just going to have to become a hot tea drinker. I had plain ole Lipton today but was wondering.....

What kind of hot tea do you like and would recommend to a newbie? I'm not fond of flavored drinks like Koolaid or flavored iced teas, but I do like lemon in my tea. I saw Twinings and Earl Grey at the grocery store but thought I would ask the experts that I know are here on the DIS.

English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, Orange Spice, Chai...

If you want some really good plain tea, get some made in the UK. They really do know how to make a good tea. :)

Definitely English and Irish breakfast to start out, as mentioned already. Twinings is a pretty good grocery store brand. Another good plain tea brand you might be able to get at the grocery is PG Tips. I like Earl Grey a lot, but you may wish to buy a small box to see if you enjoy it. It is flavored with oil of bergamot.

As far as lemon, I would just use a slice of fresh lemon in your plain tea. I think the teas that have the lemon flavor already in them are funky tasting.

I haven't read the responses before I post this ... (Why do I feel like I need to say that!)

I don't drink coffee but I have tea every morning at work. I usually don't drink tea at home and I don't know why ... I am trying to learn about loose teas and break into it at home!! But anyway... my FAVORITE and only tea I drink in the mornings is the Republic of Tea's Earl Greyer (yes, greyer!). I love it. You can buy it at Panera Bread and some Borders or Barnes and Nobles (I don't remember which). I haven't seen it anywhere else. It's a little more expensive but soooooo much better.

I don't drink plain tea, like the Lipton. Earl Grey is my favorite morning tea. You can go to Panera and get just a cup to try it to see if you like it before you buy the container!! It's about $8 for 50 bags but I love it!!!!

ETA: I drink my tea with a little sweet and low or sugar and NO milk. I don't think that is very common b/c when I do order it out they always look at me funny ... but I don't like it with milk.

Bigelow's Constant Comment. It was my mom's favorite too, so I can remember her when I drink it.

Also, Chinese White Tea is HIGHLY caffeinated, but very mild and yummy.

It is supposed to be good for stomach issues. I make a pot every morning and drink it all morning.

At night, I like the Sleepytime tea, has chamomile, etc. to help you sleep.

I think it is time to put the kettle on now!!

Welcome to the way of the leaves instead of the beans. :thumbsup2

I like Earl Grey---the bergamot bothers some people. I would suggest buying a box of bags that has multiple flavors. Since you don't like "koolaid" flavors, I would steer clear of the fruity flavor tea packs until you are ready to "brave" them.

I don't put anything in my teas. I've never understood the need to make it sweet or creamy. I'd rather enjoy it b/c of its taste and not flavoring it to make it palatable.

Peppermint tea is my cure all, especially for sinus problems, headache or congestion. Usually I drink Red Rose, which is a good grocery store brand, even according to a British friend who is a self proclaimed tea snob.. Right now I have a box of Celestial Seasons Cranberry Apple, and I really like it.

Peppermint tea is great! Love it. Earl Grey you really do have to be in the mood for it. My current favorite is one that my husband got from a local tea company called Organic Passion Plum. YUMMERS! I am generally not a fruity tea person, but this one has me in love!

Here's a good recipe for my tea:

(it makes to mugs)
Enough water for a little over 2 mugs of tea. Place in small saucepan. Add a good 1/4 cup (or more if you like) of honey. At the rind of a lemon, lime, or orange. Add 1 1 inch piece of trimmed ginger. Bring slowly to a boil.

I usually use a plain old Lipton tea bag w/ 2 Equals. Allow tea to steep and add the juice of the lemon/lime/orange you got the zest from.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!

adagio.com !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love, love, love the Foxtrot, Peppermint and Irish Breakfast teas. I bought a Bodum tea press from Amazon.com (4-cup for work, 2-cup for home) and use each daily.

I love tea! There's a new trend of "white" teas. White pear, blah blah blah, except white or clearer (instead of brown). Tastes the same as any other tea. If you have a Kroger near you, I prefer the Kroger brand green tea. Its NOT bitter.

Earl Gray is pretty smooth and not bitter.

The only tea I can't stand is Lipton. My mother gave it to us girls when we were sick and it was horrible. :crazy2:

I do like Celestial Seasonings (Cranberry)..

The adagio teas are very very good! I'm currently addicted to 'candy cane lane' by celestial seasonings. Mild peppermint w/ a hint of vanilla in a decaf green tea.

My all-time favorite is Twinings Earl Grey but I recently tried Lady Grey and I love it. It also has bergamot and it has a light citrus flavor. It's not fruity or over powering it just has a slight tang of orange.

I enjoy Bigelow Lemon Lift tea - it comes in regular and decaf. I have also had Celestial Seasonings' Lemon Zinger tea if you want to go the herbal route.

I used to love Celestial Seasonings' Red Zinger, but I bought a new box last week and found out that it now has peppermint in it. The peppermint overpowers the tartness, which I why I liked drinking it. I really preferred the old version.

Thank you for the suggestions! I see I've got some tea tasting to do.

I love Candy Cane Lane. Unfortunately, I only bought one box when I saw it at the store so I could try it and now they don't have it anymore. I'm almost out so it might be time to hit some different stores.

Go here, Yogi Tea, and they will send you some free samples. All the varieties I tried have been pretty good.
