TCD Quality Control Inspection 6/5/09

I'm not sure what they are doing now- but I can tell you for sure that they werent all that concerned about water around sites when we were there over Memorial Day weekend... we had knee-deep water on one side of the site and a swamp with several inches of water on the other... DaddysCoolTV was in the 300 loop back where the ducks were and he couldnt even use his grill without pushing in his slide... hopefully things will be dryer by the 4th... one wrecked ankle cause of a swampy site is bad enough... dont need to ruin the other one too ;)

Do you know why they barriaded the 700 loop this week?

No, I don't.

Looks like I am going to have to make another inspection!

Actually, I won't be able to make it. :(

That is interesting, as the conversion of the 700 loop was just completed in April. I don't know why it would be closed off again.

If anyone wants to earn a TCD junior deputy badge, now is your chance.

Look on the positive side lol They can now justify charging premium prices because there all water front sites lol. Damn thats alot of water. Hopefully it will soak in soon enough. thanks for the great post

I am gonna try to scope out the 700 loop today, we leave tomorrow so it has to be today, I rode through on Sunday it was open but no campers and the clean up guy was hosing the last site on the left. I went by last night and it was barricaded but I didn't see any equipment in or around.
Last night around midnight there were Orange County Sheriff cars buzzing in the entrance and a helicopter with a spotlight shining over the fort for about half an hour, I was in the parking lot and overheard a CM talking on her phone about a lost child. I hope they found em because they abruptly all went away by 1 am.

Do you hear that?

It is opportunity knocking, my friend!

You have a chance to earn your TCD junior deputy badge.

Get over to the 700 loop pronto, and find out what is up.

I am sorry to hear about that possible missing child. That is a scary thing. But it is good to know that it is taken quite seriously. I saw this first hand when we were visiting around Halloween one year. A man was taking a group of kids around on a golf cart to look at decorations. When he got back to his site, one of the kids was missing. He didn't do a head count after each stop (perhaps beer was involved?), and he ended up one kid shy. It was incredible how fast law enforcement showed up. Turns out that the kid got off the cart at the site on the 800 loop that used to have the great decorations. They found him there safe and sound. I never heard if the guy survived after his DW was done with him.

But I digress.

Get to the 700 loop.

Now!

Yep, that swampy look is what it was like when we were there! Pretty much the only "area" we had was just our concrete pad at our site. It was a bit crowded- didn't get our 10x10 up since there wasn't anywhere to put it that wasn't underwater and we were a bit crowded on the pad with our picnic table, grill, bikes, vehicle, etc. Especially since there was a tree smack at the back of the pad (trunk right up against the concrete pad) so we couldn't pull our trailer further back. We had the bike rack thing on the back that could have "hung over" grown past the concrete pad but we couldn't do that with the tree there. But we managed to still have a good time on our little concrete pad island. LOL

Ok, from what I can see in the 700 loop is the tree chopper. He is there right now grinding away, I took some pics but this laptop won't download them for some reason so we will have to wait til get home for the pics. They cut a few trees at the front of a few sites on the lower # sites but are going all out in the middle right now. There is a trailer with planks (concrete forms) parked in site 707 and it looks like they are gonna get rid of the sand pads on more of the sites. I hadn't noticed but DW said there were a lot of sites in the 700 that had sand left. I went down the old RR bed from the 800 loop and took some pics, I thought and still think they may get back to clearing off the rest of the RR bed behind the 700, right now its cleared off between the 7 and 800 loops and down about halfway, only makes sense that they would clear it down to the end of the loop. They had a truck there with logs as big as 18 inches stacked on it but right after we were there the tractor with the big claws on it was leaving, I'll try to get over there after they leave and see what I can see. For The DIS this is TNBOB reporting.

Well done!

OK, TnBob, you are hereby awarded your TCD Junior Deputy Badge, with all rights and privileges appertaining thereto.

But, you still need to post the photos when you get home.

That is weird that they are chopping away again on 700. Looking back, I think they rushed the opening of 700 for the Easter crowds, and now that things are slowing down some, they are back to finish things up a little better.

It will be neat if they clear the old rail bed behind 700. Up to now, it has been basically impenetrable past the dog walk area.

I have often wondered whether any other areas of the Fort will be cleared of non-native vegetation after the loops are finished. The area between the 1500 loop and the dog park comes to mind.

So, good job.

Thanks for taking the time to report. Now, go back to enjoying your vacation.

That is interesting that they are back in there working. I think TCD is right...they rushed through the work to get the sites back online for the spring crowds and are going back in now to finish the job right. Or at least to finish the job...not sure if it will be "right". I was there the same time as TCD in early April when they were re-opening 700, and they sure did crank through the work over the last several days before it reopened.

Thanks for the updates Bob! Glad you got your trip in, and have a safe trip home!

I failed to get in after they left, we went out to eat and got tied up and it was dark when we got back, I wanted a pic of that gater too but couldn't find him today and as I said it was dark by the time we got back. It was during the campfire last night when we saw him swimming around. I will try in the morning for the 700 but I'm not an early bird and we are leaving when I get up. Maybe if I show my new Badge they will take me in and show me around some, I may even name drop (TDC)that might help.

I was there this past week as well and it seemed a little drier than TCD's pics. 700 was closed yesterday morning and a few guy's were in there working. We took the comfort station path into the 1100 loop on Thursday after the workers left. Drove around and saw pretty much what TCD posted.

As the Mayor you would have had to approve the final inspection anyways

I thought I saw the seal around here somewhere, hmmm, oh, here it is:

OMG... I almost wet myself, that is FFFFUUUUUNNNNNNNYYYYYY (in my best Gomer Pyle voice)

Thanks for the updates. I have been visiting the Fort as a day guest the past few months and have really been disheartened by the new "look". I couldn't even imagine why the Fort was looking so sparse and then the storms came which led to the new swamp look. I thought it was a result of the hurricanes (yeah I know that was several yrs ago LOL) but haven't been around to really look much at Fort since the hurricanes.

I hope the powers that be have some type of plan to alleviate the flooding. I cannot imagine being a guest paying decent $$ to have those "ponds" on each side of my new vacation spot....and not to mention that they look like prime mosquito breeding grounds. Holeymoley!
