Taylor Swift just made me cry

I don't think Wynona is jealous -- she can sell out an arena as fast as Taylor (okay, maybe not quite as fast -- in minutes -- but within a couple of hours). She just knows first hand how hard it is to not know adult life without fame, and that's even WITH putting in the groundwork.

I like Swift. I think she has a decent voice -- not top level, but it works on the kind of emotional level that she writes at. Her songwriting is actually quite clever both musically and lyrically in a genre that has a lot of good songwriters. Sadly the pop versions of her songs lack a lot of the acoustic subtlety that her country versions have (good Lord, I change the channel when that drum starts banging on Love Story on the Top 40 station). So her voice works better on the country versions because they tend to be plain.

The performing tics are distracting, but she's a very tall gal, and sadly she has begun her performing career in stadiums. If she just stands there and doesn't DO anything people will complain. So she's making an effort -- doesn't look like it comes too naturally for her, so maybe she'll work with some coaches on it.

When she's just sitting with an acoustic guitar she's far more natural.

And she did a great job on SNL last week -- sly little sense of humor, and she can do a mean Kate Gosselin impression!

I watched and I'm happy Taylor won EOTY. The awards last night was one of the most upsetting with underdogs taking the wins. Not many people except the Flatts to lose but they did to a deserving group.

Female Vocalist doesn't mean that, the award usually goes to the top female of the year. Carrie has laid low this past year, hence why she didn't get it. Would I have loved to see Reba, Martina, or Miranda get it heck yes but Taylor got it. That's the only category I wasn't thrilled with joy she got.

Miranda has always wrote her songs on her cd, Carrie just really started writing songs for her CD.

Darius so glad he won, very classy and his speech made me cry. He's been welcomed to this genre with open arms.

Taylor is well liked by her peers and this is all industry, the only country show that is industry voted completely.

I just wanted to say I was happy for Darius as well. I really like his music and the first time I heard one of his songs, I didn't even realize he was African American.

I also liked how she was kind of making fun of herself on SNL in the singing monologue. Kind of like when she did the rap parody with TPain at the VMAs where she was mocking and reinforcing her "image" at the same time. (I said "image" but I think she really is like that!)

What do you mean?
Just that I was surprised the first time I saw one of his videos, because like a PP said he was the first African American since Charlie Pride to win the award he won last night. Country musicians aren't exactly the most diverse group out there in general. My initial reaction was that it was really cool to see a country musician of a different race than what seems to be "normal" for the genre. I would have felt the same way if I'd seen a new Asian or Hispanic artist in a country video and hadn't known before that that they weren't white.

That is the first time in a long time where I watched the whole show!! Brad and Carrie were great hosts - I loved their banter with each other! Everyone did a great job - it was great to see Little Jimmy Dickens and Barbara Mandrell (I wonder how she looks the same as she did 25 years ago :confused). Darrius was Awesome! I grew up with Hootie and the Blowfish and it was great to see him as a crossover artist! Taylor has had an EXCELLENT year - did you hear her comment about having opened a show for everyone of the other EOTY nominees?? Wow!

We actually "discovered" two new acts that we really like - The Zac Brown Band and Jamey Johnson. Of course I have heard their singles that are on air now - but I didn't "know" the artists. I actually went and bought two new CDs today because of watching the awards! I think both of these acts just went through my area recently - and I didn't take the opportunity to see them.

Kenny Chesney with Dave Matthews - great performance - although I think I liked Dave Matthews just a little better! He has an amazing voice!

I'm a Kid Rock fan - even though he's not country - he's a little bit of everything - it was great to see him open the show by presenting the first award - then to perform later with Jamey Johnson - it made my night! (He fulfills my need for a bad boy! Him and Sawyer from Lost - what can I say!)

Thanks for the thread! It was nice to think about the show again!

DisneyMissy...I bolded your second paragraph because I love that you "discovered" Jamey Johnson last night! I "discovered" him earlier this year and have now seen him live FIVE times...can't get enough! 'That Lonesome Song' is one of the best country albums of all time! Glad to "meet" another JJ fan!

I have to say... I am not the biggest fan of Taylor Swift. Although I do agree she did the most entertaining this year, I can't see her being around for as long as people like Martina McBride or Faith Hill. I can see her lasting for a few years, but I honestly can't see her being one of the "greats." I also think her music is more pop than it is country.

Also, I do not see how you can place Taylor Swift in the same category with Keith and Kenny and the rest of them. I just don't think they compare

BTW- I am the biggest Carrie Underwood fan. I think she's amazing. I've liked her since she auditioned for American Idol. I saw her in concert 5 times last year. In my mind, Taylor does not compare to Carrie. Carrie sounds exactly the same live as she does on the CD. You can tell her voice is all real on the CD, no altering.

I'm not "attacking" anyone else's opinion, this is just my opinion.

Since we can't debate politics or religion- I'm glad to debate country music.... LOL!

Have you never listened to Hootie and the Blowfish? That's how I know him, from that band. Like I said, I've known him for years, been to so many of his concerts, eaten dinner with him, drank beer with him, he's an amazing artist and I was so happy he won. If you don't know Hootie & the Blowfish do a search, find the music and give it a listen, I bet you like it too! :)

I'm glad Taylor won. She is a good entertainer. Her songwriting skills are good for someone so young. Her voice could be improved but that is not all that I use when determining who I like and listen to.

I was so glad to see Darius Rucker win. He seems like such a nice person!!!

I love Lady Antebellum. I was happy to see them get credit where they deserve it.

Overall a good night.

I really like Hootie and the Blowfish! That is so neat that you know him!!!

I've heard some of their music but didn't realize that was him. I listen to country music and watch the videos once in a while but obviously, somehow I missed hearing that Darius Rucker was "Hootie."

She hit that out of the park, that was one of the best skits on SNL in a long time

Agreed, I still have it on my DVR. She is an amazing songwriter, sings well and has a genuine personality. She is still down to earth and adores her fans. I don't even like country, but sometimes I steal her CDs from my DDs room.

As far as Wynona, I really don't think she could sell out a major stadium. I wouldn't go...I have this issue with DUI drivers.

Taylor is a great role model and her videos are adorable. Moms, if you daughters have the Fearless CD, take a listen to "The Best Day". I cried like a baby the first time I heard it.

Part of my problem is that I think Taylor Swift is too Pop to win this award. I'm a bit of a purist and I think that she's more Pop than Country.

But she writes good songs and as Kris Kristopherson (sp?) showed you don't have to be a great singer to do be a good singing song writer.

Brad and Carrie did do a great job.

Obviously, Carrie thought so too.

Carrie Underwood Stops Brad Paisley From Praising Taylor SwiftUSMagazine, November 12, 2009

Did Carrie Underwood pull a Kanye West at Wednesday's Country Music Association Awards?

After Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year -- the night's highest honor -- cohost Brad Paisley began praising the singer.

"How 'bout that? Nineteen-years old...Congratulations, Taylor. What a night. I can't even imagine a better...."

Underwood, 25 (who lost out of Swift in the Female Vocalist of the Year category), then quickly interrupted: "And how were we? We were awesome!"

I like Taylor (I have a 10 yr old DD so I hear her music alot!) I think she is talented and I really appreciate that she sets a great role model for young girls. I have been impressed with every interview I have seen with her, she seems like a very real, hard working, honest young woman.

But I don't really think she deserved to win country music entertainer of the year. I think she is more pop than country. And to win an entertainer of the year in any music category, I think that type of music should be what you sell/perform/produce the most of. I just think Taylor is more pop than country.

I did love the mix that they did with country stars and pop/rock stars. I really liked the song with Kenny Chesney and Dave Matthews. :thumbsup2
