Taxis

We have always stayed on site and we have always driven down from SC (so we have always had a car and free parking in the parks).

This time we are staying off site (Double Tree Downtown Disney) and are flying (we are not renting a car). We will probably take a taxi to the parks most of the time. My question is.....

Do I need to arrange for the taxi ahead of time or will there be some outside of the resort. If there are typically taxis outside waiting, are they usually big enough for 6 people?

You should check with the hotel when you arrive. You may need to arrange for taxi vans, or take two taxis.

But the Hotel Plaza Boulevard bus system is available to you at no charge. Buses generally run every 30 minutes from before each park opens until after each closes. It's scheduled transportation, and the schedules are available at each of those hotels.
