Taxi's with a 3 year old - Car Seats???

How did the world get so populated before the child seat laws? It's a miracle any of us survived!

Well, the laws of physics are the same whether you are in a cab or in your own vehicle. There is no way in heck I'd stick my 3 year old in a taxi without a car seat. Not a booster, but a 5-point harness. A 3 year old is too young for a booster.

I know it's a pain, but take the carseat with you. It's the safer thing to do.

Oh please. When the world wasn't so populated, less people drove. The ones that did drove less miles and they drove slower. Apples and oranges. It's BECAUSE of advances in safety and medicine that the world is more populated.

I'll second the "oh please". Not only are there more cars on the road, but there are bigger, heavier cars driven by more morons who feel they own the road. There are also more highways, where said morons can go even faster than they should, putting all of us at risk.

Also, why don't you go talk to the kids who didn't survive car accidents because their parents chose not to restrain them properly. Oh, that's right. You can't, because they're DEAD! Sorry to be so harsh, but it really bugs me when people pull out the old, how did we ever survive crap. Guess what, some DIDN'T survive.

Are you a parent? If so, how old are your kids?

I'm in my 30's, so I grew up and never had these safety features.

I always use them at home. And I've used them on vacation when I drive my own car or have a rental.

But, taking a taxi from one resort to another isnt exactly a huge risk. Yes, there is some! But, isnt there also risk on that WDW bus??? What about getting in and out of the bath tub?

Risk is all around us!

Kids are much tougher than they appear. The fact that they survive 9 months in the womb and are born at all is a miracle. So many things can go wrong, especially early!

By the way, many more survived than didnt. The world's population is up!

Cars went just as fast in the 80's! And cars were heavier back then and didnt have the breaks they do today...yet, the world's population still went up...

If ever I rent a car at Disney Care Center, Is there a car seat for my 3 year old DD? Have a nice day. :)

When you rent there most likely you are using Alamo or National. They offer car seats for about $10 per day. This is what we are doing to go to SeaWorld for the day.

There are risks you can minimize, if you choose. If you choose not to and use being on vacation and not wanting to be inconvenienced as the excuse, that is all on you. I certainly hope that your children make it safely to every destination. If something happens, I certainly hope you spend the rest of your life knowing that you could have done something to minimize the risk to them and you chose not to.

What a pleasant thing to say! I hope you spend the rest of your life regretting not doing more if something happens to your kids too! Wow...classy...

You could always do more! Even in everyday situations where you have minimized risks, there are always more things you could do!

It's not about being inconvenienced on vacation. I wont have my car or a rental during my trip, so I was asking if it was possible or not as I have never seen car seats in taxi's. A cab ride without a car seat within WDW is no more dangerous than a bus without safety belts.

Yes, the ride in the cab without a car seat IS more dangerous than a ride on a bus. Buses are bigger; they distribute crash forces differently, and they are less likely to be in a crash just because they are more easily seen.

So sorry to have hurt your feelings, but sometimes the truth hurts. Just because you don't want to hear it doesn't make it any less true. Caskets and wheelchairs are a darn sight more inconvenient than carseats.

I'm well aware of the risks, but I dont see much difference between a bus and a taxi going that slow on WDW property.

You didnt hurt my feelings, it's a message board. But, you really should look up the definition of, "tact."

I can assure you, all the taxis we took on property went significantly faster than the busses. They quite possibly went faster than the cars in the Petty Experience, on the race track...no lie!!

Well, from what I have read there are more than enough taxi's with car seats, so it shouldnt be a problem.

And if not, it's only a short drive, etc.

Thanks for replying!

Tact doesn't save lives.

Can you not even see the difference in the sheer size of a bus vs. a taxi? There is a lot more structure there to absorb crash forces.

Neither does harping on an internet message board haha

I never questioned the physics of the impact. But, a taxi with a lap belt properly placed, is safer than a bus with no safety restraints and hard benches all around.

Save your breath, because I'm done with this thread.

I'll save my breath if you can show me some research that backs up your assertions. Obviously I hit a nerve if you are done.

I'll back off, though, and tell a hypothetical story about a hypothetical family. Jack, Jill and their 2 kids Jimmy (10) and Janie (2) go to Disney World. It's too inconvenient to haul a car seat around so they leave it at home. They plan to use the bus system anyway, so there is no place for a car seat. Then they decide to hit DTD for some shopping, and they decide to take a taxi. They secure their shopping bags in the trunk. Jack rides in the front with the driver, Jill and the kids in the back. Everyone wears their safety belt, even little Janie. Jill knows that if Janie is sitting on her lap she could easily become a projectile in a crash, because there is no way Jill could hold onto her.

So off they go, little Janie securely in that belt, with the shoulder portion tucked behind her. Bob, who is running late for work and distracted, runs a red light and t-bones their car. Little Janie's seatbelt does nothing to protect the upper portion of her body, so she flies forward and her (typical and normal) heavy toddler head flies forward also. Her spine doesn't fly stretch quite enough to accomodate the forward motion. In addition, the seat belt has retracted and, not finding the hip bones that an adult would have or the structure a booster seat would provide, cuts into Janie's stomach and causes considerable damage to her internal organs.

Now, had Jill chosen to hold Janie... Janie would have flown from her arms due to the force crashes. She would have been a projectile, bouncing around the car and injuring other people in addition to herself. Jimmy might now have a head injury from his little sister bouncing off him.

All because it was too inconvenient to use a car seat while on vacation. Jack and Jill? They will never forgive themselves. They knew better, but chose to take that risk for their child. They buckled themselves in, but made the decision on behalf of Janie that she would be fine without benefit of the proper restraints they used themselves.

Is that better?

kathi, save your breath. It's obvious the OP had her mind already made up. When it comes to car seats, some people just don't even bother to do the MINIMUM amount of research, and usually rely on the side of the box to tell them if a car seat (or booster) is appropriate. All you can do is provide the info- you can't make people listen if they don't want to.

Oh boy do I know that. Being a CPST is the hardest volunteer job I will ever have.

I was checking the board and saw you were the last to reply, so I thought I'd check it out.

I was done with the thread, because others posted than taxi's with car seats are readily available and not rare like most places...

But, that's a nice story. Fiction can be fun, huh?

I never said I would hold a youngster. I said a kid in a properly places lap belt is better than a bus with no protection. The buses have no safety harnesses at all. Sure, they have size, which helps somewhat. But, if the child is on the impact side the size wont be helping too much.

Fiction can also very closey mimic what could happen in real life, and that story is something that absolutely could happen.

When the taxi slams into the bus, the people on the bus are going to be jolted around a heck of a lot less than the people in the car. But whatever, you do what your conscience lets you. Now, I'm done. Darwin's law and all that.

haha yes, it could happen, but it doesnt mean it will. Darwinism and car seats? That's cute.

Sorry, I didnt come here to get under your skin.

I'll be using the car seat when I find a taxi with one, but if they dont I think there is minimal risk in the short ride without it, etc.

I just had to comment that I am almost 36 and my parent's used a carseat - so the people arguing that carseats weren't around in the 80's are mistaken - they were around in the 70's. I can remember being in one.

Do some internet research - buses are much safer in crashes then cars - that's why they don't have safety belts. My daughter is six and 4 feet tall - she wouldn't ride in a taxi without a booster.
