We are looking to move to either TN or IN (hubbys job) with IN being in the lead right now, because of an opening.
I use to live in KY, moved to CO.
I know how KY works - lived there my whole life - lol. Still learning CO, know nothing about TN and IN.
Just wanting real opinions from people living in any of the states mentioned, on how you feel (I did a google search, but, get graphs, charts, etc)
Thanks

Let's we have a good snow storm right now that has shut the down the city. Yes I truely mean shut down the city. If snow we call off school and work and want have drive in snow.

Sadly, Nashville is still open. It would be awesome if it wasn't but, I had to make the drive in this morning.

I'm in the Terre Haute are of Indiana. From what I've read of other states and their taxes :scared: I don't think ours are nearly as bad. We do pay for our own school books for grade school kids, which is unusual I think (I believe most other states include those fees into other takes)... in my area that runs around $100 extra a year, but I believe our other taxes are probably about the same or lower as surrounding states.

Then again, I've never lived anywhere else, so I'm not real sure.

I grew up in Ohio and lived there until 13 years ago. In Ohio, plates (then) cost around $40. Here in Indiana, they are a percentage based on the value of the car. I think it maxes out around $450 (again, I think). Our property taxes are less than what they were in Ohio and a whole lot less than when we lived in Michigan. If you purchase a home, make sure you file your homestead exemption. This saves a lot of money. We pay for our books, all grades and ages, plus school supplies. In Michigan, I didn't have to pay anything--my property taxes were more than double though. I think the reform passed, 1% value of the home for owners, 2% for rental units and 3% for business--unless you live in St. Joseph county and we have to pay 1.5% of the value in taxes. Usually the grade and middle schools are pretty predictable. The high school fees are based on the classes you take (for my boys at least). My oldest is in a lot of technology classes, those seem to be more expensive than what the middle son is taking. We are right near the Michigan line, gas prices really aren't that much different. We rarely shut down for snow. We had a little over two feet of snow fall between Friday and Saturday, some kids sporting events were canceled, some weren't. I think it depended on what time they happened. No alcohol sales on Sunday though. I don't know how many times I'm in the grocery store and see people loading up their carts and I let them know about it. Had a few not believe me and still go up and try and purchase.

I think East TN is one of the greatest places on earth to live!

I have family out there and it's beautiful....however, from what I hear from them the job market is bad (even before the last few years).

To the OP -- where are you thinking of living in each state?

Indianapolis IN (brownsburg, dansville, avon areas) or Nashville/Knoxville (not sure of the cities here, haven't did the research, but want good school areas) TN

I don't live in TN, but I know their sales tax is high, I belive that is offset by their lack of state income tax.

Yup... TN here... 9.75% sales tax, but no state income tax (okay that's not entirely true, there is a state income tax based on investment income, I think but it really doesn't affect anyone I know). Property taxes are also super low - our house here is assessed at triple the value of the home we had in Florida - taxes are the same.

Knoxville is a valley(ish) area, so you really don't get the snow and city shutdown you hear about. They don't get much snow - just a few inches a year, so 4.5 inches yesterday really made a mess - but really, that happens quite infrequently.

I am Nashville born and bred, so I can speak just for my city....

PLUSES:
No state income tax
4 distinct seasons
Beautiful
Top-notch health care, some of the best in the nation
Very affordable housing
Plenty of culture, national sports, etc.
Within driving distance of WDW! ;)

MINUSES:
Higher sales tax than many places
Davidson County schools are not great. If I were going to send my children to public school, I would live in Williamson County. Public schools are much better there AND the property taxes are lower, but getting overcrowded because everyone who cannot afford private is moving there.

In my opinion, the pluses outweigh the minuses!

:thumbsup2 I love Tennessee!

Murfreesboro is a great town also. It has great shoppping, restaurants, and job opportunities. There are great schools in all the districts, you just have to know what you are getting before you move. I teach in Murfreesboro (actually live in Woodbury) in a school that I believe is better than where I live so I take my daughter with me. I also like that we have great opportunities for entertainment in Nashville, Chattanooga, Gatlinburg and throughout the rest of the state in the form of state parks. You can reach 75% of the US population in a day driving from here, too! I think that is why Fed-Ex and Nissan have major headquarters here. Plus, we are all so friendly!:wave2: Well, most of us!

We might have to add this to our places to consider for retirement :thumbsup2
