Someone just told me that when you get married, you can write the marriage off on your taxes that year and get a deduction of about $4000.

I find this hard to believe. Anyone have any info? :confused3

(But if it is true, that $4000 and the $8000 from a house would be pretty nice! ;))

Well when you get married, you now file married instead of single and you have your spouse as an extra deduction....maybe it averages out to a 4k deduction.

I think someone is either pulling your leg or drastically misinformed. A wedding is not tax deductible.

I knew this, but we won't claim each other.

It's a co-worker of mine, and he is kind of Fruit Loopy. ;)

I knew I could count on the Dis for accurate information.

This makes me think of that "My co-worker is a fountain of misinformation" or whatever thread!

nope. in fact, there is more of a marriage penalty than anything else (you pay more in taxes married than single)

Actually, it depends. Dual income couples typically pay higher taxes than they would if they were single. Single income couples typically pay lower taxs than they would if they were single.

Weddings aren't tax deductible.

And for me and DH, there have been tax benefits of getting married. We pay less together than we would filing separately.

That has been our experience, absolutely.
