TA's charging for Best Rate "research"?

I can't believe this! I just got off the phone with a local TA, supposedly a WDW "Expert". She said she has never heard of the Best Rate AP program and that I could find out more about it online on the Disney website. I told her I won't have my ap until next month, so I can't get online to book it, but that I had heard a TA could help me book best rate with just the voucher. She said "we would have to charge for that." I asked her for what? She said "for doing the research and making the reservation". Is this for real? Do legitimate TA's really charge for making a Best Rate ressie? I thought they were paid by the resorts or something. Hmmm, learn something new everyday I guess. I never did like the idea of paying someone to do something I can do myself, and this just confirms my thoughts on that. I guess I'll wait to make the December ressie (for one night at AKL before our SSR check in) until I pick up my AP in Sept.

A lot of local agencies that actually have an office you can walk into are now charging for research and such. This is happening for a few reasons, some which are, companies cutting commission percentages, airlines cutting their commissions out all together, higher costs of rent, taxes, insurance etc that go along with running a business. One of the other reasons is that people call, walk in, etc and ask for information, the agent does a lot of work and the person never comes back, books elsewhere, or books themselves. Now the agent is out all of the hours she put into researching it without any pay. Most agents only get paid a commission so if people don't book they don't get paid, hence the fee that some now charge

Most of the TA's recommended on this board are internet agencies and since they do not have the added expenses of having an "actual" office you can walk into so most do not charge

A cousin of mine was a travel agent for a long time so that is where I get my information from

Absolutely not. TA's are paid commission by the travel supplier (in this case, Disney). You should never have to pay anything extra for a TA to book a hotel, vacation package or cruise.

The only travel suppliers that don't pay commission are airlines. TA's now charge a fee for booking airfare (or in many cases, no longer book airfare and just let you book that yourself).

There are also some agencies like one internet agency that charges a $25 fee if you cancel your vacation

My AAA office (and perhaps all AAA-Michigan offices) charge $25 to book a Disney package, and perhaps other packages as well. I *think* that quote may have included air, though...I'd have to call back to get a quote to see if they'd charge on a land-only package.

I wouldn't hesitate to use one of the TA's I see ads for here, except that most of them have a 3 night minimum ( that's what the one's I've asked for quotes from have told me), and we only need the AKL for our first night there, then transferring to our DVC resort.
Thank you everyone...

Actually, I've heard if you have the voucher (not will-call), you can log into the AP Best Rates site. Do a search for this as I've not done it so I don't know which numbers to enter from the voucher.

Maybe that has something to do with getting the AP "Best Rate" - not the TA.

The agency I use doesn't have a 3 night minimum...

a lot of legitimate, long time, experienced TAs are charging fees for research, just not Disney TAs. The charges are generally proportional to what type of travel you are asking for info on. If you are asking for a specific package you saw advertised it may be a $20 fee but if you are wanting a custom FIT trip to Europe doing multiple countries, transportation etc. it may be $200. What most of them do is if you book with them, then the fee is refunded or applied to the cost of your vacation so you don't end up paying it if you book with them. If you don't then they have been paid for their time and expertise. If someone wants to charge above and beyond for a commissionable trip, I'd keep looking for someone else! Air isn't always commissionable, some special offer rates at hotels aren't but Disney IS ALWAYS commissionable on rooms and packages. Agents started charging fees like this when they would put a couple of hours into researching different options, give that info to the client and then have the client go book it themselves online. That said, we (I am a TA) decided that was not something we wanted to do because I think it turns a lot of clients off. To some TAs it's a way to have people recognize that they are professionals and their time is worth something; they feel that weeds out the "shoppers" from the "buyers." We decided that time spent putting together a quote is a "cost of doing business" and that if nothing else, we gained experience and knowlege on that destination. :) It's not as big of an issue when we're talking Disney. I don't have to do a ton of research when asked to compare WL and POR. I've been there...I know. If you ask me to compare 2 hotels in Scottland....I've got to go do some research for you! LOL This is a hotly debated topic on TA boards!

I know there was some discussion of research fees among some of the Disney specialists when the best rate came out because there is always that risk that someone without an AP who can not see the rates and/or availability will use a TA to find out what the rate would be and then order an AP and book it themself. I can't speak for everyone else but we decided that it wasn't right for us because it doesn't take us long to check that so it's not like we are putting a bunch of time in to it and we felt that it would turn too many people off. We are well aware that every quote request we get comes from people who more than likely requested quotes for 2, 3, 4 other agencies so what is the difference between time put in to that quote and time put in to a quote for someone with best rate? I have no problem with people "agent shopping." :) It's important to find an agent you are comfortable with and how else are you going to do that than by checking around? :)

This just shows it's always a good idea to ask about fees before you work with any TA! Most of the Disney specialists whose names are tossed around here do not charge any fees.

I know Dreams does not have a three night minimum, I often book just one or two nights on the weekend between DVC resort stays. I use Beth E. she is great and always gets any new discounts applied for me quickly.

You can go online to the AP site with your voucher numbers. If you're using a Mac however, you won't be able to login.

Well, I'm definetly not a "shopper". I told her I am a disney nut and I need to book 1 night at AKL before a DVC stay, but I needed a TA to do it through the Best Rate plan. So, I really was going to book the 1 night with her, if she had known what she was doing. I guess I feel like she wanted me to pay for her training herself on the best rate program. I will try Dreams Unlimited, and I'll book through them if they don't have a minimum night stay. I wasn't able to get online with a voucher, so I can't do it myself unless I wait until Sept 11th. I love all the input I get from you guys, it really is helpful to have different viewpoints and suggestions.

Thanks again...

Definitley no 3 night minimum for booking a best rate discount (or any other for that matter.)
The Free Dining did require at least 3 nights, but other than that regular reservations do not have a minimum.

Maybe a one night booking isn't worth her research time (although you would think she would want to know anyway) Just a thought!

I'll chime in with a vote for SueEllen also. She's always answered my emails promptly and with a wealth of information.

WOW... I haven't heard that TA's are charging research fees. I know we haven't been when we have booked both of our vacations through Magical Memories. None of the TA's we requested quotes from mentioned one either :confused3

You really should be able to get online with your voucher numbers. I used my voucher to make my reservations for December 2005. Search this board for advice on how to put in the numbers. Remember that the date numbers must each be only 2 places - e.g., 08-08-05, not 8-8-2005.
