Hi Everyone,
I have a quick question about something I understood from one of the Dis Unplugged's pod cast regarding saving money at Disney. I understood that you receive a 5% discount when you purchase Disney gift cards from Target using their RedCard or the Red Debit Card. I signed up for this card and received the following notice
5% REDcard™ Discount: You will receive 5% off your REDcard purchases at Target stores and Target.com except on prescriptions, some pharmacy purchases, Target gift cards and prepaid cards, clinic services at Target, Target Optical™ eye exams, some independent businesses in Target stores, wireless protection programs and mobile carrier deposits. 5% discount applies to eligible purchases minus other discounts and the value of promotional gift cards received in the transaction.

I phoned the target and they told me that I don't receive a discount on prepaid Disney cards. Can anyone tell me if they have tried to purchase Disney gift cards and what their experience has been. Am I just not understanding what the discount encompasses ? If you can shed some light on the situation or if you know how to obtain this discount can you tell me.

Thanks and have a wonderful day,

Mark Mican

I literally just got back from target buying Disney gift cards, you get the discount.

It won't show up until you use your redcard, but you do get the discount.

ETA:

The only thing I purchased was 4 Disney cards.

:welcome: to the DIS! You get 5% off on when you get your receipt. You're not supposed to, Target will ALWAYS say you won't get the 5% but so far we have been getting it anyway because their system codes it as "entertainment" or something like that. I was super skeptical as well so I bought 1 Disney gift card from Target, it rang up at $50. I paid with my RedCard and then on my receipt I saw the 5% discount was applied and I was actually charged $47.50. The worst that could happen was I had a $50 Disney gift card if the discount hadn't come off.

I don't think you get the discount when you purchase Disney GC's online at Target. You used to awhile ago.

You can get 5% off online as well, just can not pay any of your order with a gift card if you are buying a gift card.

"Target gift cards" means literally gift cards for Target "and prepaid cards" so far as I can tell are the Visa/MC/Amex prepaid credit cards. However, gift cards that Target sells for other businesses; like Disney, SouthWest, Chipotle, Nintendo, etc; are considered merchandise for Target and thus the 5% discount for buying with your RedCard applies. I'm pretty sure I get the 5% off when I buy airtime cards as well (like Tracfone), but it's been some months so I don't have a receipt handy to double check.

The Target gift cards exclusion also applies if you get a free Target gift card with a purchase (like buy 4 dial soaps get a $5 target gift card for free). Even though the purchase price of the Target gift card is discounted to $0, the system subtracts that $5 from the eligible spend and you don't get the full 5% for that order.
(from the Target RedCard page "5% discount applies to eligible purchases minus any other discounts and the value of any promotional Target gift cards received in the transaction." https://www.target.com/c/redcard/-/N-4tfyn)

Example for clarity:
4 dial soap @ 3.99 each = 15.96
$5 gift card................. = 5.00
gift card discount......... = -5.00
5% off this purchase..... = -0.55 (instead of .80 which is 5% of 15.96)

I have always gotten the discount that is how I paid for my last 2 cruise.

I work for target, the confusion comes in with people trying to buy the visa prepaid cards, traditional target gift cards and receiving 5% off and you absolutely can not but for now disney gift cards are labeled as entertainment gift cards in the system or at least it is how it rings up in the system at my store when i purchase them for trips and i have absolutely purchased them for trips in the past and gotten 5%. It has not changed. Whenever you use the redcard the 5% doesnt come off until you put your card in and the transaction is processing so there may also be confusion there if you are using self check out registers

The "entertainment card" denotation is irrelevant, but it seems to make a good story. There are other coupons and deals that exclude all "gift cards" and those deals will not work on any gift card, "entertainment" or otherwise. The RED card 5% discount terms specifically exclude target and visa/MasterCard/Amex cards. All other gift cards are included.

I see a lot of confusion from people who think they just need to have the card but don't realize they have to use the card to get the discount. Typically they want to pay with gift cards. You can't use a gift cards and receive the discount.
