Target is my new grocery store!

Our Target has very competitive prices for the things I like to buy, but I at our store you have to be very careful about foods with expiration dates. At least 5 different times now I have picked up items that were past their expiration date. I always let management know, but I wonder if they are under less stringent rules than a normal grocery store.

Mine is being redone now. It is supposed to be done OCt 17. Unfortunately the remodel is making the rest of the store really small with very narrow aisles. I have bought a few of the current grocery items which are cheaper then Wegmans (they are in the same shopping center). I will have to wait to see how they compare with the produce and meats. Meats has to beat Wegmans, lets see how they compare to Shoprite.

Just remember, if any store not being rebuilt from the ground up as "SuperTarget", while these newly-remodeled stores will have expanded food offerings not previously available, it's (IMO) not intended to totally replace the everyday supermarket experience.

Knowing how you New Jerseyans are so passionate about ShopRite, I don't expect many of you to be jettisoning them for a Target "with a few more grocery items".

I have never heard anyone say Target had cheap groceries. I live in Texas and know I will spend at least 10% more in Target than any other grocery store.

Yes, I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm in Texas too and I NEVER shop Target for groceries. Their prices are way too high.

That's interesting you should say that. Target's pricing structure must be pretty reasonable, because I read the first few posts and thought "Huh?? Target, cheap??" I'm in Texas also, and we have two different Super Targets pretty close to us.

I'm Texan and have the same situation. I have at least 6 grocery stores within 3 miles of us and with all the competition, I don't understand how Target is still able to sell groceries. They have got to be kidding with those prices. When they first opened they were pretty competitive but I haven't shopped there in ages and their selection is not all that great either. I love their clothes though. :)

LOL!! Passionate about Shoprite?? NOPE, not me....I go there about once or 2x a month. Wegmans is my go to!! Wegman's grocery prices are cheaper then SR, their produce is 100000000x better then SR. I go to SR for their lost leaders and sales on meat. Wegman's meats are awesome, but toher then the ground beef and chicken cutlets...they are way too expensive!

I understand what they are doing to our Target, but for our area, I think they are making a HUGH mistake. Our Target sits in the same shopping center as Wegmans. We have a Walmart in the next town that is being converted to Super Target and I think that scares them. But their demos are off in my opinion for the Target. The only way I can see it working is if their prices are that much lower then the other stores, so it will be interesting.

I love love Target, but the way the store is now shrinking, and how narrow the shopping areas have become, well it's not fun to shop. I hope they fix it by the time everything is done, by removing items... only time will tell :confused3.

I find I can save .50 - $1.00 on most items I buy at Target. I do most of my grocery shopping there now.

Target food prices are cheap in my area...love doing shopping there. buy lots of basics, yogurt, milk, cheese, lunchmeats, breads, etc.:thumbsup2

Our SuperTarget here in So Cal is more expensive then SuperWalmart at least and possibly the grocery store as well.

I find that sometimes there are great deals on Target especially Clearances. But it is a trip to get there since I have other groceries that are nearer to my home. I make the trip there when I am buying supplies that I know cost better there and look around for great deals.

noah

found our local Target had remodeled and expanded their
grocery/frozen/dairy departments. I was quite pleased
with some prices of the things I saw they have in stock.
I actually work for a supermarket company that a PP has
mentioned (and I think I know the Wegmans/Target plaza
and Walmart in the next town she is talking about) ;)
I like to support myself by shopping in my own company's
store, but have no problem buying things elsewhere if
they're cheaper and it's not out of my way. (I am a total
budget shopper so I do know my prices)
There is major competition in the area where I live, with
Aldi's, Pathmark, Walmart (not a super but does have some
groceries/frozen/dairy products), A&P, Shoprite and Target
on the same highway within a few mile stretch of each other.
Bottom line: I guess it depends on where you live if your local
Target store has good prices.

They recently remodeled the East Hanover Target store (including expanding the grocery department so there's more frozen & refrigerated cases, as well as a small selection of produce), and it was a horrible experience while construction was under way, much like what you've described. Now that it's done, the store is decent to shop in again. Of course, they moved on to the Rockaway store, which is the one I go to most often, so I have to suffer through more remodeling fun. =)

I stopped in a Target yesterday in Edgewater, NJ for a few things and noticed the new grocery area they opened up. The grocery area was like a ghost town...no one was there. All of the meat had stickers on it...the ground beef 93/7 had a sticker for $2.50 a package because it had to be used within two days.

Oh...and I'm not in love with Shop-Rite :rotfl: I shop in Trader Joes for dry/canned goods, H-Mart (Korean Grocery) for the best produce and one of the many butchers in this area for meat.

In Colorado, Super Target was far more expensive than any other competitors. Here in NC, it is cheaper or the same prices. "Our" Super Target though doesn't have a complete meat and produce dept. If it did, all my grocery money would go to Target. You can buy a few basic items, but not things I use weekly.

I almost always buy my meat like that...and then I just throw it in the freezer or cook it and freeze it when I get home. I love deals on ground beef because we use it all the time...I will use ground beef for at least 3 nights per week, and that's only counting M-F. :)

Between Target q's and mfg q's I usually get pretty good deals on dry goods and a few frozen/refrig. things (cheese lunchmeat yogurts). There produce however is ridiculous as is their meat so for that I LOVE HEB! On thing that I will only buy at Target because they are consistently $1 or more cheaper than everyone else around...Silk Soymilk...their regular price beats everyone's sale and they routinely price cut them. Being that my two year old goes through at least a gallon of this a week I am always in Target!

Another Texas (central) person who seldom finds good pricing for Target food. I used to go about 15 miles away to a Super Target, but only bought groceries when Target had a particularly good coupon for it. They opened one of the newer ones down the road that have a small grocery section and I'm always a little stunned at the prices. There's an HEB across the street that is much lower, and the SuperWalmart about 5 miles away beats them all.

Funny, my brother worked for Target as a hard line manager for years, but left about 5 years ago. We were just talking about how much more expensive the grocery items are now than what they were when he worked there. It's almost like they expanded the section and the prices with them.
