tank tops and shorts, oh no

I don't ever wear shorts (except for one super grungy pair I wear around the house when I'm cleaning), and we travel to WDW in August/September all the time! Another place to check out (because styles change so often) is Eddie Bauer - they had some travel capris/skirts made of this lightweight material that wicks moisture & dries quickly - I absolutely fell in love with it, and bought two skirts and two capris in that fabric & used them in FLA (and everywhere else!)

As for tanks - you might want to consider what others have said about the hot sun and your shoulders... Most places sell those tissue thin layering tees - you might want to have one or two of them to put on top of your tanks.

My husband lives in his camping pants at Disney. I'm not sure if camping stores will carry pooh sized clothes (campers tend to be skinny), but if it is available, camping clothes are often made to stay dry, keep you cool on a hot hike, and keep the sun off your shoulders.

Op....:headache: Listen.... People of all sizes enjoy themselves in Disney, heck,in LIFE!:thumbsup2 Find some hot weather clothes you don't mind too much, and stop worrying! Please be in pictures with your family, if you look at yourself and decide it's time for more exercise, then do it- but your family will love pics of you no matter your size.

I'm not sure there's NO avoiding it. After all, there are plenty of cultures and religions who live in ridiculously hot climates and cover their entire bodies.

I sunburn and wouldn't want to wear a tank top, personally. Like others I like the workout-style shirts. There's no huge plumes of sweat showing up under the bra line with those, either. And if you can find them, get wicking material shorts AND underwear, because if you think just being in shorts and a tanktop is embarrassing, try having your rear look like you wet it... Had that experience in cotton shorts last year at Seaworld in San Diego during a heatwave, and was mortified. For the second day of our "BOGO" ticket I wore workout shorts.

There are to be no family pics this trip. If I get a picture of me and Mickey in my shorts and tank top, I will die on the spot!

DH and I avoided pictures. Finally he realized that if we suddenly died, our son would have no pictures of us from after he was 1 or so. How sad would that be? It's not about if we would FEEL like dying, but what would happen if we actually died, and our children had nothing to look at? DH got brave and started appearing in pictures. I remained the photographer.

And then I decided to lose the weight, and now have no Before pictures apart from one partial-body shot from Chef Mickey.

So get in the photos....

The 2 extremes in temperature make me sick.

You're not alone! First year my mom lived in Miami she ended up with pneumonia. Doctors told her it's not uncommon for new Florida residents, as they get used to the huge extremes.

My husband lives in his camping pants at Disney. I'm not sure if camping stores will carry pooh sized clothes (campers tend to be skinny)...

Well, those designing clothes THINK campers are skinny... If they made bigger clothes they would pretty quickly find out it's not true!

Totally agree with queenofthehive.

abmitch01, don't miss the chance to be part of the memories in your family photos. I lost my dad to cancer in 2010, and I treasure every picture I have of him now. I couldn't care less if his hair was messed, his shirt untucked, or his belly protruding.....those photos are like gold to me.

I get what you are feeling....having struggled with my weight for a good part of my life, I can empathize with your point of view. That said, this is a great article. I read it before every trip. And I now make a point of getting in the picture for my son's sake.

thank you for that wonderful article, I'm going to take her advice and have that pic with Mickey and my DD. I'm going to make my mom, who is sick, read it. She never let us take pics of her and it saddens me now that she is dying. She was always beautiful in my eyes

I've been looking for that wicking clothing and the lightweight capris but not finding it in a plus size. I wear a 16 on the bottom but I'm not even finding that.

I've walked the dogs two days in a row, today will make 3. It's a start. I'd like to lose 30 lbs before we go. But then my new clothes will be too big, lol.

the last thing I've been putting off is trying on my bathing suit, fingers crossed it still fits. I've been going to WDW in Feb when I find it too cold to swim. I don't care what I look like, I'm swimming at POR RS.

Atta girl :thumbsup2 .

I am so sorry to hear about your mom. Sending you big hugs....been there, done that, and its not easy  .

Land's End sells all of their activewear in plus sizes. Just My Size has shirts that are very low-priced (you can find these at WalMart usually), and Old Navy Activewear is available via the website.

Amazon also carries some plus-sized activewear, especially skorts. Quick-dry skorts are my go-to park wear; with my very short legs they are more flattering than shorts. However, on DAK day, because of Kali, I go all-out and wear a man's swim trunk for shorts; the mesh liner dries much more quickly than shorts + underwear.

As to the photos, do what you like; if having photos taken will make you miserable, then don't.
I don't like having photos taken, either -- even when I was thin I wasn't photogenic. What I usually do in family photos is to stand behind my children; that way only my head and shoulders show up in the photo.

abmitch01, I say set up the suitcase if you so desire. I would have had mine out 6 months ago if the trip wasn't a secret and it wouldn't drive my DH crazy. You may find the open suit case to be another source of motivation.

I also want to say that weight loss can be difficult. but don't give up. Start small and work your way toward your goal. My DH started walking 30 minutes a day then kept adding a little time as long as he had time to do it. He lost about 200 lbs in 12 months. He made a life style change that included a little easy fitness and changing his eating choices and I supported him in every way possible to help him reach his goal. It has been 2 yrs and a job change since he started down this road and he has kept most of the weight off. I am so very proud of him. I know every day won't be easy, but I believe you can do it!

As for your actual trip, you tour the way that is best for you and your family. Talk to your DD before you go about expectations of the trip, yours and hers. I have found this works wonders with our family at keeping everyone happy and the trip enjoyable. If you are a WalMart shopper they sell the moisture wicking clothes and they are very reasonably priced. We were buying DH a new wardrobe about every 4-6 weeks that year and found things he liked there didn't break the bank.

Good luck! You CAN do it! I hope your trip is very magical!

thanks for all the encouragement! Congrats on your DH, 200 lbs is a lot. If I can do 30 lbs by Disney that would be great but if the wt comes off slower, that's ok too. My overall goal is to posse about 85 lb. I want to start making better life choices. Especially exercise. DD and I were Y members at one point, I loved the wt machines but it's so expensive. They mentioned they have grants for single moms, maybe I'll look into that when I get back.

now the worst part- the bathing suit. It fit me last year so I'm hoping it will this year. I really do not want the joy of shopping for a new one, lol. I am swimming with DD this year no matter what I look like

Check out the Catalina Suddenly Slim suits from Walmart. I bought one last summer and I love :lovestruc it. I am short and stocky and not very well proportioned and yet, this suit fits me in all the troublesome places. It also gives me a really nice shape. I can't get them here in Canada  but you can bet your boots I'll be ordering a couple for this August.

Swimming with my DD last year was one of the highlights of my trip. Being a overweight dad, I didn't have any second thoughts to people looking or staring too long. Was too busy having fun.

Even in the park we spent so much time looking around and completely engulfed in the surroundings that I didn't have time to notice if someone was watching with judging eyes.

I have drove my DW crazy as I set up our suitcase and rubber maid bin up when I booked the trip in January. It's never too early.

I also found the misting fans at Walmart by the house fans for around 4$ a piece. A nice bargain considering the cost of the misting fans at the park.

I think one key to success is not to make too many changes at once. Shocking and depriving yourself is not setting yourself up to be successful. Start with one or two small changes a week, or every few days if you find it more motivating. For DH he found motivation in seeing the weight come off and continued to make changes to keep it coming off. Lots of small things add up together. You CAN do it!

Don't torture yourself over the bathing suit. Who cares what other people think. Besides, you will likely never see these people again. And honestly, I HATE bathing suits! Every flaw and insecurity is out there for everyone to see! No matter what size you are, big or small.

This is your vacation, enjoy it! Don't let the ugliness in, only the magic that is Disney!

First off, please do not deny your family pictures with you. My late mother in law started doing this because she did not like how she looked and it kills my husband that he does not have any pictures of how his mom looked as he remembers her and loved her. I hope and pray you live a long and healthy life but still how will explain to your children years from now why you refused to be in any the vacation? Second, are tank tops allowed in the major parks? I know there is a dress code and my husband showed me an article on the web awhile back where a mom was removed from Disneyland because her shirt revealed just a hint of cleavage (there was a picture of her and her family before they we asked to leave if she didn't cover up). If you are self-conscious, you may be more comfortable in t-shirts and shorts rather than tanks. Sleeveless blouse are another option. Good luck and remember years from now you want to memories about the fun and quality family time you had at Disney, not what you were wearing.

I guess I should've been clearer, these aren't regular tank tops. They are more like sleeveless t's from Landsend. They have a 3 inch wide band at the arm holes so bra straps are covered and the neckline is like a normal t-shirt. they are like t-shirts without the sleeves.

I've never heard of no tank tops in the theme parks!! I see ladies wearing camisole and tube tops and I've seen plenty of dudes wearing tank tops.

I'd say wear what your comfortable in for the heat and don't worry about it. You can always bring a little cardigan to throw on in pictures if you're self-conscious.

Check out Lane Bryant (lanebryant.com), you can order suits online, have them delivered either to your home or the store (to store is free delivery). Then, you can return them to the store or send them back after trying on. I've always been pooh sized 16 bottoms and until giving birth same on top. Now I'm an 18 top and 16 bottom again. I've lost the baby weight, but still am a larger lady and my pre-baby suits just did NOT work. Plus, I'm tall. So it's hard to find suits that fit. I always go with Tankinis.

Lane Bryant has swimming suit tops you can buy based on bra size (get the underwires, they are awesome) as well as board shorts you can buy for the bottoms so you can mix and match. And you don't have to be stuck with men's swim trunks. The board shorts are nice enough you could wear them all day if you needed. Check out Target as well. I got a pair of board shorts from them last year and I actually like them better than the LB shorts in many ways (and they were cheaper). Wait until LB does a 40% off sale. Don't buy them at regular price. I got a couple of tops and bottoms this last couple weeks that are nice enough I plan on ditching the t-shirt I had begun wearing over my old suit. I've tried the cheaper tops from Target, they just are no where near as good with support as the LB tops are. And when your top is properly supported, you end up looking like you've lost a few pounds compared to when not supported.

Get several tops to try on. Depending on where they are made, a bra size is slightly different.

Yes, tank tops are allowed at Disney.
