On the DDP, is the only dessert option at Tangierine Cafe @ Epcot baklava?

I absolutely hate baklava and was wondering if I can't get a different actual dessert if they have any fruit or bottled beverage that I could have instead...ANYTHING other than baklava! Even bottled water...LOL! :headache:

That's what we got the last time we ate there using the DDP. I'm not a baklava fan either.

We were told the baklava was the only option, and the CM working when we were there wouldn't sub a bottled water. I generally hate baklava too but actually really liked theirs, it doesn't have the strong honey taste that usually puts me off the stuff and had much more of a nutty, cinnamon-y flavor.

Well, that's a bummer. I guess we'll just forgo dessert at that meal. I have never had a tolerable taste of baklava. LOL! It is not very dessert-like to me. Oh well!

I never had either until that one, so you might want to give it a nibble just to check it out. Even the little old ladies at the Greek Orthodox church craft show/bake sale don't make one that I can tolerate, but I liked the one from Tangerine Cafe.

I guess it won't hurt to try it since I can't sub something else. Maybe it tastes good because it's NOT authentic? LOL! :rotfl::confused3 Maybe it doesn't taste authentic and that is what makes it taste yummy.

Can you believe I Googled it? Apparently there's a significant difference between Greek and Turkish/Middle Eastern baklava, and I guess I've only had the Greek variety before. I may actually try making the type Tangerine Cafe serves - I found a "Turkish baklava" recipe that sounds about right, and the main difference I can see is that it doesn't use honey at all which is probably why I like it.

That was the only option we were given. I will echo the other posters in saying I'm not normally a baklava fan but I LOVE the baklava from Tangierine.

I also really like the Baklava at Tangierine Cafe and like some of the other posters, I am not a fan. I had no idea there was a difference between the Greek one and the recipe they seem to follow for this one. Interesting facts :)

Regarding subbing ... this is one CS restaurant where I can sum up the policy in 5 words: Dont even bother to ask :lmao:

What we can credit them for is being consistent though. They don't deviate from their policy so at least you know :thumbsup2

Thank you all. Wow, I can't believe you all like it! It must be good then! I will be trying it next week. :)

Is this just regarding desserts or in general? I remember swapping the lentil salad for a bit more couscous a few years ago and was planning on subbing the tabuleh for more cous cous or lentil salad this next time.

Ooh that's a good question. I am assuming it is only dessert, but don't quote me on that. Put this way, I am positive that there is no trade up on the dessert allowed. But after reading your post I am rummaging around for our receipt from last September as I know that we asked them to give us extra cous cous in place of the lentils as DD and I shared and she doesn't eat lentils and we had no problem. However I cannot tell you whether that was a once off stroke of luck with an obliging CM or if they are flexible on that. I guess it won't hurt to ask. Just be prepared to eat Baklava after whatever you have for your main ;)

Haha, I actually happen to like baklava ;-)

They let us swap lentils for extra couscous back in 2006 so let's hope they're still ok doing that when we visit in May

You're usually able to substitute sides if it's listed as a side on another entree on the menu (or in this case have a double portion of one side in place of the second one.) Trading the dessert for bottled water isn't as likely because Tangierine Cafe isn't owned/operated by Disney. The third party venues are reimbursed by Disney according to the guidelines of the dining plan. If baklava is their only dessert, they wouldn't be able to sub a bottle of water and still get reimbursement.

The Disney owned and operated restaurants are far more lenient so in many cases you would be able to sub bottled water or something else for a dessert.

That makes sense. We don't eat humous and subbed extra cous cous for it and have had another side. I knew there was something we had subbed on the main, but I guess it was 'like for like' which explains why we never had issues with it.

Thanks for clearing that up :goodvibes

They will substitute other items such as fries instead of hummus. I don't care for hummus and get something else every time without trouble. But the dessert is a different issue, only baklava for CS credit.
