Ok - so talk to me about use year. Our guide said the earliest use year available is April.

We like to travel that first week of December, but if we were to have to cancel, would we have time to bank? I'll definitely ask the guide a lot of questions, but I want to know as much as possible before talking to him

Are you a current DVC member? If you are you will keep your original contract UY, if you are not a DVC member you can't purchase till June 19.

For December vacations, October is the best UY.

That's what we have and we vacation at WDW every December.

For regular December travel, April is not so great. You have to bank by November 31 with an April use year. We have an April use year - we use most of our points in August (on the school calendar). So if I want to change my August trip, I have time to bank.

If you do a search for UY you will find a number of relevant threads. But the basics are that you want a UY that is no more than 7 months prior to your most popular vacation time. April is 8 months away from December, so that's bad.

If you currently own a DVC contract, they will only sell you an add-on at VGF. So, until the public sale in June, you'd have to buy a VGF contract that matches the UY of your current one. Only you can decide if buying now with that UY is worth it or if you want to wait till next month to pick whichever UY you'd like.

An April use year may not be "perfect" for December travel, but it will work just fine. If you cancel a vacation 30 days or less prior to arrival, the points go into holding. That means they cannot be banked and can only be used to book a vacation that begins no ore than 60 days from the day you make the reservation.

So to bank the returned points, you must cancel a December vacation before the November 30 banking deadline anyway.
