I NEVER leave a dishwasher, clothes washer, dryer, or stove on if no one is home.

Even the crockpot gets put into the brick garage if leaving for more than 30 minutes. Just makes me feel better.

Maybe I'm neurotic, but several different friends have had gas dryers start on fire (lint) and had they not been home, it could have been a disaster.

I don’t hand wash resort mugs/glassss while staying at studios, except my own mugs I like to bring my own mugs to DLR resorts, buy new ones at Aulani, and I keep my own mugs and utensils and plates in my owners locker for WDW.
Staying in one bedrooms, I load up the dishwasher before leaving, even if it’s only a few plates.

I load the dishwasher but I don't run it. One time I asked the person cleaning my room and they told me they can't assume that the dishes were washed properly so they'll re-start it even if the dishwasher is running when they arrive.

To be honest, though, I feel precisely 0 obligation to clean up more than I would with any other hotel room. I'm not going to leave the place a mess, but absent some rule that requires me to load the dishwasher I wouldn't feel bad about just leaving the dishes in the sink.

This is the kind of info that is great to know. If they informed guests not to run prior to leaving only to load I am willing to bet this would help with speeding up cleaning and check ins.

It could! Again, it’s what a housekeeper told me so it was enough for me not to worry!!

TBH, the few times we have used dishes at DVC, we have always washed them before using them.

No, but if someone put dishes in the dishwasher to turn on, they assume those were used.

So, that is why they restart it. This way, the ones that they are putting away are ones they washed.

Just reporting what was shared with me and why we don’t run it…just load it.

Typically, mousekeeping doesn't run dishwashers during daily room service. They replace dirty dishes with clean ones, taking dirty dishes to central washing areas. For checkouts, they handle all dishes regardless of whether guests started the dishwasher. Late room readiness is more likely due to overall cleaning volume rather than dishwasher cycles specifically.

DVC is notorious very very late checkins often times well after 4pm, which isn't the norm in the hotel industry which is why I was thinking about the dishwashers, not that other hotels dont have them its just alot more rare for a room to have a dishwasher in it.

Industry wide, hotels average less than 65% occupancy. That means the typical 80-room Holiday Inn Express has more than 25 rooms which were not occupied the night before that it can assign to early arrivals. It also means they have 25+ rooms that do not have to be cleaned by 3/4pm to accommodate all incoming guests.

Disney hotel occupancy is closer to 90%. But that means an 800-room deluxe resort like Grand Floridian or Poly has 80 rooms that weren't filled the night before, and 80 that won't be filled tonight.

Disney Vacation Club resorts--and most other high-demand timeshares--effectively operate at 100% occupancy. Every single room is filled every night, except for perhaps a couple that are held back for maintenance or cash rooms that don't end up booked. There are no empty rooms when people arrive at 9am after an early flight, and no unbooked rooms for tonight that can be cleaned at 4...5..6pm without inconveniencing anyone. Housekeepers essentially have between 11am to 4pm to clean every vacated room. If you have 300 guests checking out, there are 300 more incoming.

The infrequent cleaning schedule of timeshares also means there's more work to be done when guests depart.

THAT is why DVC room ready times tend to be later than hotels. The circumstances are quite different.

Just got back from a stay and of course the dishwasher wasn't working when we got there..... so we hand washed everything. It looked like the dishwasher powder soap had clogged up the dishwasher and was run a bunch of times with no water making it out. This isn't the first time we have had this issue with the powder. Wish they would change to a liquid soap.
