Talk to me about "Drake and Josh" on Nick

DD6 loves Drake and Josh, and while the little bit I've seen of it has been annoying I haven't seen anything truly objectionable. Until tonight. Drake and Josh cheated at an academic competition. They won, they weren't caught, and there were no negative consquences. This really bothers me, and I told DD I don't want her to watch it any more. My older kids assure me that this was not a typical show, though.

So talk to me. Was this episode an abberation, or are there many more with inappropriate messages? Am I overreacting by telling DD she can't watch it any more?

I am usually pretty strick on what the girls watch and I think it is okay... usually D & J get into some kind of trouble with the help of their little sis... and it all comes out in the end.

DS6 loves D & J too. Most episodes do have consequences, tonights rerun didn't. It's so "out there" to begin with... so much is done without the parents being around... like the little sis flying to the wrong destination on her own, renting a limo and checking into a high priced hotel? Not likely.

We've discussed how it isn't "real" and why he could never do some of the things they do on the show. Just watch with her and comment when needed!

I watch it. There isn't really anything bad. Besides for Megan saying Josh and Drake are B o o b s. But they probably mean idiot.

It's one show I let my DS8 watch; he thinks it's the biggest crack up ever. It's silly, but pretty harmless. DS8 was even telling me today how Drake lies a lot, and that's not good. Even at that age, I think they really get right and wrong, and know that what they see in a TV show isn't real life.

I personally would not let my little kids watch that show. Even though I do not have kids since I am in high school still lol. but I would not let them watch it because they are to young to be watching high school/ middle school things like that. The shows on Nick like D & J and Zoey 101 are not meant for kids under 10 to watch. or maybe Y-7 is the rating. That is just my opinion. I am sorry if you dissagree

That is questionable that the episode did not have consequences. I haven't seen that one, but it would bother me too.

DH and I like to watch these shows with the kids because in our own lives, we could use some light hearted and dumb humor. Plus we use it as an opportunity to discuss and teach our kids.

In the commercials we talk about the show, like if something sorta uncomfortable for me comes up, I ask the kids...was that the right thing to do? What should Drake have done?
We point out what a mess they are getting into, and that all the lies and cover ups just gets them deeper in trouble.
They usually can identify what the behavior is, and whether or not it was appropriate.

I also use it as a learning opportunity to talk about the different social behaviors, such as the boyfriend/girlfriend stuff and little crushes on the opposite sexes. We tell them what we feel that should be appropriate or not for kids the same ages as the characters. We also talk about self esteem issues that play into this.

Ooops....I talked too much! Sorry!

Thank you for your opinions, everyone! DD is still Drake-and-Joshless, but seems to be surviving.

(I'm posting this thank you partly in response to recent threads complaining about people abandoning their threads...I realized that I'm guilty of this and present my most humble apologies. I'll try to do better, I promise!)

My 5 year old loves Drake and Josh and says she wants to marry Drake :rotfl2:

My daughter is well aware of what they are doing and always tells me that they are going to get in so much trouble. I am not big on "banning" things from my kids, and fake is fake and they know whats fake.

I've outlawed the Simpsons, Family Guy, Ed, Edd and Eddy but I find Drake and Josh mostly benign. I think my son was almost 9 when he began watching though. I occassionaly watch but have not seen the cheating without consequences show. I WOULD find that a tad off but would use it to explain TV is NOT real life and in real life, cheating would including getting caught and being in BIG trouble. Make lemonade, as it were.

Now that's some guilt!! JUST KIDDING!!! I try hard not to abandon threads but I did stop the email notifications each time something is posted! It was filling up my mailbox! So.... now I only ask for the email notification on threads I have started! Hopefully that will work for me!

haha im 19 years old and I love that show. I dont think it is terribly innopropriate for children, after all its on nickelodeon.

I admit to the occasional D&J, but then I think Drake is kinda cute

I have to admit, I love this show! Drake and Josh are hilarious! :happytv: I think it's harmless, but can understand your concern about the lack of consequences(sp) on that episode. My DD's watch it all the time, but they are 11 and 12. I really don't see a problem with any of the shows on Disney or Nick, especially compared with other cable channels. Even some of the commercials on other stations are questionable for a younger audience! My kids are allowed to watch anything on Disney, Nick and Food Network (their favorite).

I find Drake and Josh to be one of the better kid shows on TV. It is pretty benign compared to other shows and it is actually pretty well acted. I will sit down and watch it with my kids when it is on. Kid shows today are so bad. You can't protect her from everything and there will be a lot worse that she will see. I really think you are over reacting to one episode. Why don't you watch it with her and see for yourself how harmless it is. JMHO Jay

I wathc D&J all the time with my 6 year old..I actually like it too LOL...she is also a big Zoey101 and Neds Declassified fan.

I also watch Drake and Josh with my 6yo DD. Even my 2yo DS likes to watch it. My DD knows it's just a show and kids dont get away with all that they do. She always says how mean there little sister is to them. It's a good show that gives us a lot of laughs.

My 15 year old DS watches this show all the time. It' kind of annoying to me. He's always going to be a big kid at heart. :wizard:

 Ok, I admit it. I watch Drake & Josh. I started watching it because it was always on when I went to the gym. Granted, I'm 26, so I dunno. Maybe a show that entertains a 26 year old isn't appropriate for a 6 year old, but I think it's pretty harmless.

Now, mind you, I don't WATCH it regularly...I don't plan my schedule around it or record it when I'm not around. It's very silly and your typical Nick show, but for the most part, I think it's acceptable for kids to watch (whereas I can see the reasoning for some people to ban Spongebob).

And, fine, while we're at it, let's just put it on the table: I also watch Phil of the Future on the Disney Channel. And THAT one I WILL actually seek out when it's on. I think it's got so much dry humor that it CRACKS me up, and I've gotten my best friend hooked on it too. ;)
