Talk to me about August...

However, we are considering August (August 8-22) for our trip next summer for a couple reasons:

1) hoping crowds may be a bit lower than what we would experience in June

equal if not more crowded. however around middle of august local schools go back into session along with 44 other states so it does thin a little but it's not uncrowded..

2) it will allow my husband an actual break, instead of just finishing work for the year and a day or two later hopping in the car for a 3 day drive to Florida to go tour theme parks (college instructor).

I like longer trips, with more time, crowds are less impacting.. you can always just go another day and you'll be going in and out shorter amount of time.

My concerns however are more weather related: I know that August, especially mid to later August when we would be going are getting into the thick of hurricane season. What are the odds of getting a bad storm/hurricane when there? What do they do if that happens? Is there any reimbursement for tickets? What about general day to day weather - is there much difference between June, July and August? Is the heat/humidity really that much worse in August than June?

Dont' worry about it. sept is the most active month. Most storms miss central florida and I think in the last decade or two there might have been 2 or 3 days that impacted the parks. you might see some more rainy afternoons here and there vs the 20 minutes but overall it'll be the normal 20 minutes and the rain is done.

We always go march break (first week of March) but a few years ago we went mid-late August. It was HOT. Unbearably so. But I am from Atlantic Canada so 30C is a hot day for us, I'm not used to southern temps. LOL

The parks were maybe slightly more busy than our early March crowds (so not too bad) but the water parks were so packed I wish we hadn't wasted the extra $.

We had afternoon thunder showers every day we were there but they never lasted too long.

We do August a lot and are doing it again this year. I do feel the crowds are substantially less than spring break time periods and June. We go first thing in the morning, take a long mid day break, and come back in the evening. And the discounts are great. Is it lovely and uncrowded like the first two weeks of December? No. But we do like it. Other than just the schedule my other advice is make sure you wear shoes that dry out easily because the storms in August pass by quickly but are super intense and we often find ourselves in ankle deep water for just a few moments. We've been many times and never bee evacuated from a hurricane. We have one time been booted out of DHS for tornados but it's one of our favorite memories now in retrospect, it was crazy.

I may just be tired, it could be the allergy meds I just took, but I'm having a hard time understanding what you mean here, lol.

We're from Atlantic Canada too! :) But where we are we get very high humidity, so the humidity was typically the same, and often less in Florida, than we were used to where we live. My mother in law lives in Saint John, and they don't get the heat or humidity that we do, so she definitely minded it more. We were so prepared for it to be horrible given everything we've read on here, but we really didn't find it that bad at all. Definitely hot, no question about it, but we found it very manageable.

I think what he meant was that you could add an extra day or so to your June trip, to spread it out...LoL Not so sure that that will help but.
in regards to August. We've done 3 times. Mid to late, and always found the parks to definitely being doable for sure...It is hot...As hot or hotter than June is all relative....If it's 92* & 90% humid in June & July, then 95* & 88% Humid, is going to feel the same...You could get lucky a few days, but for the most part it'll be that....The storms, that roll through, we were also afraid of..But they really aren't bad at all....One or two might go for 2 hours if that but not so bad. It does get real muggy following those too.:scared: We were down there during Hurricane*( Forget the name ) & it came through almost to the day, as Katrina did many years ago, & even with that we only lost a 3/4 of a day....
In order to not lose $$$ I think the only thing that'll guarantee anything would be the trip insurance I believe...:confused3

It's figures the first time I'm brief it makes no sense :(. Basically was saying with longer trips the you can abandon plans based on crowds because you have time to come back and try it again.

If we had longer tickets, I would agree. With only 6 days, there's really not that much wiggle room for going for half a day, deciding it's crowded and trying again another day :(

August is hot. Muggy. And daily storms are common. BUT- going at the end of the month, but departing by Labor Day is a good time. Everyone has gone back to school for the most part so it's less crowded.

We have gone for spring break, June, July. August and December. Most of our trips have been August due to personal commitments. Yes, it's hot, but not really that big a problem. When we started I only brought heavy cargo shorts and golf shirts (before they started making them out of lightweight material). The next trip I shopped for very light cargo shorts and t-shirts. Worked out perfectly. Crowds have been a little lighter then also. We have hit some dicey weather, but nothing we couldn't handle.

We've gone several times and August and haven't had a hurricane yet. August is hot. But I've been in September and it's hot then, too. The crowds lessen a lot towards the end of August. We once went from August 8 -17 and the parks got less crowded as the week went on. We now go the third into forth week as the schools are already in session in the south.

We went last year at the end of August, and it was HOT, but the clouds helped keep it to a bearable level. The worst time I remember was waiting outside in the direct sunlight for our BOG lunch. It was MISERABLE, but we survived. To this day, the entire family remembers how hot standing in the sun was for that moment of our trip, but the rest of the heat was manageable. We had misters and frog-togs, and always had water to drink.

What we DO remember as being a pain was the frequent downpours. We had ponchos, but taking the off (folding them up and putting them in ziplock bags in our backpacks) and then putting them back on constantly was a bit of a hassle and got everything wet. We're going to opt for small personal umbrellas for each person too next time, providing there aren't the same hurricane winds.

So yes it's hot, but we felt being wet and soggy was actually the worse of it.

We love August. I have gone late August (leading up to Labor Day), mid August, and early August. We are going again the first week of August this year.

It was no hotter than when we went in October, TBH. And, the crowds weren't horrific. We rope drop, eat lunch in A/C, go back to hotel and swim, shower, rest. Then a nice TS dinner and close a park or two. It works well for us. We love the daily thunderstorms, too!

We think June isn't as bad as August. The rain in August has lasted longer than the quick afternoon showers, we've had rain all day, or most of the day multiple times in August vs. the quickie showers in June.

We think, no proof here, that the humidity hasn't built up and soaked through everything in June vs. it's over 100% humidity in August lol. My family would not go in August ever again, they would stay home. The feeling of being soaked through your clothes as soon as you walk out the door is not pleasant.

We went once in August and we've been twice in June. The weather was unbearably hot in August. The entire family said they'd never want to go back in August because it's too hot. I've certainly never sweat as much as I did during that trip. We look like rats drowned in sweat in our pictures. LOL.
