Talk about a loyal dog!!!

This story is in my local paper today.

There is a family, mom, dad, daughter and grandchildren that live in the same home. The daughter owns the dog, but evidently was really the best "pal" of the dad.

Well dad died last week after surgery. On the day the mom was going to head over to the funeral home to make arrangements the dog had gotten out of the yard and disappeared. They looked for the dog, but finally had to go to the funeral home about 5 blocks away.

Guess who was there? The dog. Pacing back and forth.

And when the dog disappeared the next day, guess where he was? The funeral home.

This dog knew his pal was missing and went and sniffed him out!

The paper's headline says, "Canine pays his respects."

Check out the story of Greyfriar's Bobby, I will post a link if I can find one. Not only did Bobby follow his master to the church and the graveyard, but he LIVED on his master's grave for the rest of his life! I think he spent 9 years living there. The town sort of adopted him and took care of him.

Dogs can be amazing.

One of my brothers & SIL were in the process of moving a few years ago. They were having a house built and sold their home before it was finished and were staying with my sister. They had 2 dogs that were also staying there. They went away for the weekend and when they returned one of the dogs was missing. My SIL was expecially upset because she really loved that dog. A couple of months later she went home to their new house and there on the porch was the dog. She was thinner but in pretty good shape. They had looked at their old house and other places but never expected to see her again. The house is at least 10 miles maybe more across country from my sisters house. The dogs had only been to the new property a couple of times and never lived there.

Another time the same dog helped rescue the other dog, he'd been hit by a car close to the road and when my SIL got home didnt' give her any peace until she followed her where she wanted to go. She went right to where the dog was, he lost a leg but otherwise recovered fine.

This dog is not any recognizable breed but one of the smartest dogs I've known.

There is a very famous Akita Inu in Japan named Hachiko. He is so famous that the Japanese erected a statue of him. He used to own an Akita, so when we were in Japan the status was a must do. Here's a picture of my daughter (then 14 months old) petting Hachiko .

Hachiko's Story:

In 1920 Dr. Ueno was a professor at the Tokyo university, from where he used to commute by train to his residence. Together with his dog “Hachiko”, he would walk to the Shibuya Station. Like clockwork, Hachiko would return to meet his master at 3 p.m. as he returned on the afternoon train. Tragedy struck on May 21, 1925, when Dr. Ueno did not return because he had suffered a stroke and died at the university.

Loyalty of the Akita has no bounds, and over the next ten years Hachiko would return each morning and afternoon in search of his master. People were so moved and impressed by the dog’s faithfulness that they took to feeding him and giving him water. News has a habit of travelling and soon people were coming expressly to Shibuya Station to feed and pet and to have the privilege of saying that they had seen and touched Hachiko.

Years rolled on and Hachiko became crippled with arthritis and barely able to walk, but he continued to make his daily pilgrimage to the station until March 7, 1935, when Hachiko was found dead at the station on the spot where he had kept vigil for so many years.

My parents have a mutt named Guiness that my brother picked up in a parking lot during a storm. My mother had a hip replacement amd slipped on the stairs going up to her bedroom and landed on the floor. My dad had just gone to the grocery store to pick up a few things and was only gone a few minutes. Guiness ran up to my mother and lay down next to her with his paw and head on her stomach, and he would not let her get up no matter how much she told him to move. He just sat there and wagged his tail and kept her there til Dad got home.
