We are going for our first trip just after easter and have 'free car hire' included as we booked with first choice. They have given me this further information:-

''Free car - What’s Included
• Air-conditioned car with unlimited mileage, automatic transmission, and radio
• Local road maps and information
• Liability cover offering third party liability protection up to $25,000 maximum per accident. Third party liability protection relates to any damage or injury you may cause with your rental vehicle to either the property or person of a third party excluding relatives.

Compulsory extras - paid locally
• Florida State Surcharge of $2.05 per vehicle per day
• Airport operating fees $3.00 - $3.50 per vehicle plus 8.6% on all optional extras
• Airport handling fees $3.00 - $3.50 per vehicle
• State and local taxes 7%
• Collision Damage Waiver (CDW): If you are involved in an accident CDW relieves you of all responsibility for the collision and covers you for all damage to the rental vehicle up to its full retail value regardless of fault. Alamo reserves the right to refuse a replacement vehicle to anyone who has had as a result of their negligence an accident, breakdown or contravened the law.
The above charges are compulsory and will be payable locally upon arrival.''

Apart from a few days in Majorca years ago we've not done car hire abroad so I've emailed my questions to Alamo but would also appreciate some advice here as well. It seems from the above that everything is included 'insurance wise' apart from damage to us, is that right? Do we need to take out any extra insurance? We've not sorted our travel insurance yet, so I'm thinking that presumably that would be all of the cover we'd need for us if we had an accident? I've asked them how much the CDW fe is likely to be. I'm soudning really vague here I know but its completely new for us!
Thanks

I have no experience with First Choice but if its like Virgin you will be better off ignoring the "free" car and renting your own seperate.
Just had a look on Alamo's site, Collision Damage Waiver Full ($23.99/Day) add that to everything else they quote and its not going to be cheap(although no car hire is anymore)
A big problem for you is you have no idea what you want, they will sell you anything and everything at the desks. They will probably try sell you Roadside assist at $4.99 a day, In my opinion not required but they will try.

Look at prices at sites in UK, a few here that are popular, cheapest for me this year is Hertz more info on getting a low price here (post #2)http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2401659

Flipping Heck! Thanks for that prompt reply. $23.99 per day, why couldnt i spot on the website? I'm usually a together and organised person, why couldnt I see that on the website?? We obviously need to do some serious homework. They have offered us an 'upgrade' for £294 which includes the cdw and other stuff which may be better and thats before we start shopping around.

I went to Alamo.com (not co.uk) did a dummy booking, when you choose car it takes you to a page of choices and costs, all fees are listed there.

All depends on size of car and how long you want, a quick look on USrentacar 2 weeks smallest car starts from £230 fully inclusive

You are so kind, we will look over the weekend. Part of me is really looking forward to getting there because then I can stop fretting about all of the advance planning, the other part is wishing we could put it off for another month!

Some of the 'extras' are not necessarily mandatory, however CDW (or LDW) and SLI (Liability Insurance), I would highly recommend getting both as you are fully covered in the unlikely event of damage, even slight to the vehicle.
(not by any means suggesting there will be but you want piece of mind).
