DH and I are headed to Key West Fl for our 11th anniversary. Has any one gone? This is a no kid trip!!!!!! whoaaaa Need advice on places to go , what not to miss, things to do, best dinning. :yay:

I've been there 3 or 4 times while on cruises. It's really a nice place. We took the conch train tour around. It's a nice way to see the island. Also saw the Mel Fisher maritime museum. That was interesting. Apparently he discovered a sunken ship and the museum has some of what was found in it. You'll see chickens roaming free around town, not sure what that's all about.

Also took a sailing regatta excursion there. They were little catamarans with a captain on each. I think there were 4 of us on each. I got to work the radio as we came around to our mark.

Also I understand there's a place there that sells really nice sandals, but I cannot recall the name of the shop.

Also there's a great candy store that sells keylime candy, tea, etc. One of my friends from church that was with me got a beautiful ring in one of the jewelry stores.

Also check out the Del Sol store. Everything in there changes color in the sun. I bought a couple bottles of nail polish and it does change color when I'm out in direct sun. I think they have things for kids too, so it may be a good place to purchase some souveniors to take back to your kids.

Have fun!

Mallory Square is where there is alot of street entertainment and local color.

There are also several "adult beverage" places, such as Sloppy Joe's and Hog's Breath.

If you want to take a small drive, about 25 east of Key West is a very unique bar with good bar food called the No Name Pub. Its walls are covered in dollar bills that patrons have written on and stapled to the walls. I think the claim is that there are over $12,000 worth.

DH and I were there in Feb. (no DDs!) and we had a nice time. It's a great place to visit....very laid back and relaxing. We took the train tour. It was worth it. We did a lot of walking. Sunset celebration at Mallory Square is not to be missed. We stayed at the "quiet" end of Duval Street. Great location. Only about a 10 minute walk to the heart of Duval. Would love to go back again some day!!! Have a great time. :sunny:

Here's what we like when we are there.

For breakfast, head one street over from Duval and go to Blue Heaven. You eat outside and chickens roam around the table while you eat. They don't bother you though. The Banana Pancakes are the BEST!!

For lunch, if you like seafood (which you better if you are going to Key West!! :rotfl2: ) Turtle Krawls has the best conch fritters. And it's a nice walk by the water to get there.

Crabby Dicks is really good food also, that's right on Duval and you eat upstairs overlooking the street.

As for bars, where do I start, every other building is a bar, with a T-shirts shop between! :thumbsup2 We really like Irish Kevin's, but be prepared, the entertainment is a VERY raunchy singer/comedian. Don't go if you are easily offended! Fat Tuesday has some great frozen drinks. They are premade, and spinning in machines, like Slurpees at 7-11. Just point to the one you want. Quick serve!! :rotfl2:

For sightseeing, I would take the Trolley Tour around the island. Make sure it's the round trip one where you can get off and back on at the different stops. There's a fort and museum over by Smather's Beach that is pretty interesting.

Also, beware of the cheap T-shirt shop owners. You pick your shirt and they put on whatever screen print you choose. Make sure you know the price upfront, or they will change it on you after it's printed. Stand your ground and argue with them or they walk all over you. Most of them don't speak much English. If you want nice souvenier T-shirts, I would go to store where they are already printed. You can pretty much tell by the looks of the store what you will get.

Also, if you are not from a big city and don't have much diversity in your area (I'm from a little town of 3,000) keep an open mind! I'm pretty open-minded, but my hubby isn't. One of my favorite parts of our trip (unlike my hubby) was going into one of the gay bar/drag shows and watching the drag queens up on stage. They are so funny! But that's the night life, you don't see that during the day.

Where are you staying while you are there? We stayed in a B&B right on Duval. It was very nice. We parked our car and never used it the whole week. We walked everywhere.

Oh, one more thing, The Hemingway House Tour was pretty interesting and I will 2nd the Mel Fisher Museum as something to see. Go to Mallory Square for Sunset Celebration each night and see the crazy Cat Man and his trained cats. Gosh, so much to do. When you get there, buy a guide book or ask the locals, they will give you some more great ideas!!
Have a great time!!

we will be staying at the La Mer house it is part of the Dewey house B&B. We will be flying into Miami and renting a convertable to drive the rest of the way. It is a short trip but it should be fun!!! Can't wait to try all these places out! We are taking a haunted tour of the place as well....has anyone done this? it sounds like it would be fun. We can't wait!!!!!!!

DH and I also drove from Miami. It's a beatiful ride! It took about 3.5 hours, but the time went by quickly!!! :)

Keep in mind that Key West is at the southern most tip of the US and is much hotter than Orlando :sunny: The ride down :car: from Miami is quite nice. Watch your speed! There are lots of speedtraps. If you want to make a stop along the way there is a resort in Marathon Key that offers swimming with dolphins. It is called Hawk's Cay. If you like Birkenstocks they can be found discounted down there. I recommend going out on a boat for a snorkeling trip :fish: (there is a catamaran tour out of the Hilton marina). Mallory Square is a must at sunset. Give the Hemingway House tour a shot, we found it very interesting, esp the 6 toed cats. We ate on night at a restaurant called Kelly's. The food was good and the atmosphere outside was very romantic (don't know if this place is still there, restaurants come and go and we were there 6 years ago!). You can go down to the Southernmost Point and see if you can spot Cuba across the water. There are lots (and I mean LOTS) of places to wet your whistle :drinking1 Enjoy yourself! It is a great place to melt and relax.

We just got back from a cruise that stopped there. The Pirate Museam that is owned by Pat Croche of Philly fame is really good. It is near the Conch Train Station, just down the street. It only takes about an hour and is well done. I hear the restraunt attached is good but we ran out time. We got $1 off drink coupons for Fat Tuesdays from the Timeshare stand in Duval street. I asked for directions to Fat Tues and the girl gave us coupons. yum!

WOW .....thanks for all the advice on where to go .......we are soooooo excited....
did most of you make reservations at these attractions or just walk right up and wait. We want to take it easy.....not like a Disney trip, where we have to "schedule" everything. But if it is better to have ressies then I will definetly start booking places. We are looking forward to this trip so much.....we just hope a hurricane stays far far far away. With it being in Sept. we are chancing it. :rotfl2:

We didn't make any set "plans." We just went with the flow and it all worked out. If there was a little wait at a restaurant, we just had a drink while we waited. There are sooooo many restaurants to choose from. We never waited more than a few minutes.

If you do take the trolley tour, I would suggest taking it earlier in the day. We took it around 10 a.m. and it was fine. Later in the day it seemed to be a little more crowded.

Enjoy!!! :)

You don't have to have reservations for anything. Walk up to any restaurant and you should get in no problem. The only thing you need reservations for is a Sunset Sail, but you can usually go sometime that day and sign up for the same night. Ask at your hotel or B&B and they will be very helpful if you have questions. Ours, would even call the place and make reservations for us if they were needed. Have a great trip.

Thank you guys for all the great advice......we can not wait to go!!!
