I just booked my trip in Oct on the auto train and they can't mail the tickets in Canada so i had to choose to pick them up?

Any other Canucks taking the train recently. Can I pick them up in Lorton before we board? Can I call them and ask them to mail them?

Not too sure, just thought i'd ask before i call tomorrow

I didn't take the auto train - just the regular train from NYC to Orlando and I think I picked up my tickets in NYC. It was a couple of years ago so I'm not sure. You should ask over on the transportation board - they have lots of autotrain veterans.

I want to take the autotrain for my next trip (once my own princess gets home!). Are you driving down to Lorton the day before? I'm a little hesitant to take the autotrain because I'd have to leave at 2:00 am to give myself enough time to drive to Lorton.

Wow!!

This is the first I have heard of this.

I was wondering how much this trip on the train is going to cost you.

What time do you leave and arrive in Orlando?

Thanks

Sandy - i talked to amtrak and i can just pick up my tickets at the Lorton Station prior to boarding the train. Yes we are driving down the day before, we have a toddler and don't want to push it too far. I've heard the traffic could be bad so i wouldn't want to be fighting the clock to get there.

Disney fanatic - The trip is $$$$ but if you look at the time it saves and aggrevation of driving it makes it worth it. Flying can be expensive (i think we looked at Air Canada and it was like $4000 to fly, and west jet was still $1500 or so.

The train is about $1500 US now if you book earlier it is cheaper and we are booked into a family car accomadation. You can book a couch where you have a coach seat all night but with a little one we wanted to have some privacy and a place for her to run around. A lot of money but I think it will be worth it.

The train travels from Lorton Virginia at 4pm and arrives in Sanford Fl (about 1 hr outside of orlando) approx 8:30 am. The trip back is just reveresed.

And with the autotrain you have the additional savings of not having to rent a car or pay for taxis while in Orlando. I took the regular coach train and slept in coach with an older child and it was fine. They have plenty of leg room and it was quite comfortable. For those looking for an alternative to flying the train is a great option. The fares for the regular train are about $200 US return (Orlando-NYC).

I just wanted to make sure that I understood what you were saying...
1)It costs $1500 US (about Can$1800)...
2)You Have to drive to Virginia to get it...
3)It takes 16-1/2 hours...
With all due respect...is this such a good thing ?
(We have Westjet flights for 4 costing about Can $1600 + Car rental for 12 days $308 = $1908).
I'm not sure where your coming from in Canada...but assuming it was Toronto.
You have several hours to drive to Virginia (+ gas money)...another 16-1/2 hours on the train and the same on the way back.
I'm don't see the benefit or savings doing it this way.
(ie: Train+Gas = $2000 (24 hours)....or Fly +car Rent+Gas = $2000 (2.75hrs)
