Taking Stitch to Hawaii and NOT Leaving Him There

I loved the pictures with the sword and Captain Hook! What an awesome photo shoot!

Great day! I've been checking out some of the dresses in the link, and they are all strapless. With my farmer tan I don't do strapless well! :rotfl:

They really had fantastic photographers on the ship this time. My favourite photos come from a photo shoot on Pirate Night.

I know what you mean about the strapless dresses, but even with the custom dresses, I could not find anything other than the odd dress with spaghetti straps or a halterneck.

Is that YOU????????????? I'm STUnned how different you appear as a brunette :faint

Yes, that is indeed me. The hairdo is a wig, but the colour is actually pretty close to the colour my hair was until I started to go white at the age of 14.

Fabulous busy day Corinna, you packed in loads today. Talking to the Captain must have been brilliant, wonderful photos again:goodvibes

Day 8

We went through our usual routine. I had set the alarm so that Mickey would call us at 7:00. I got up and got ready and while Graham sorted himself out, I had a look at the Navigator that had arrived at some point during the night. I was not really in the market for any activities as I had another busy day ahead of me, but I wanted to check what characters are out and about. Something caught my eye. There were two listings for Elvis. This could only mean one thing: I would finally get to see my special friend Stitch. I was very excited. I also spotted a seminar that I thought would be of interest to Graham : Acupuncture - Arthritis Solutions.

Once Graham was ready, we headed up to deck 9. He went to his exercise class and I went to the Cove Cafe for a Mocha and a pastry. I was obviously not the only person who had this idea. Some of the people for my jewellery workshop were already there. Somebody who was supposed to do the workshop the following morning asked if there was any chance that she could do it that morning instead. This would be her second workshop so I had no problem adding her as I knew that she knew what she was doing. In the end this actually worked out perfectly. One of the people who was scheduled for this workshop could not make it as she wanted to take her son to the character breakfast. She had left a message for me with one of the other participants. So those two could just swap. The jewellery workshop was a lot of fun again.

Once the workshop was over, I actually had a couple of hours spare time. I decided to have a wander around the ship and check out the merchandise at the shops. As I came out of one of the shops, I bumped into Graham. He mentioned that he had bumped into our table mates from the Panama Canal cruise and that they had wondered if we fancied having a meal with them at Blue Bayou after the cruise. This just made my day. Blue Bayou has been on my bucket list forever, but as it is not exactly cheap, I could never quite justify going by myself and I did not want to waste any of the limited park time that Graham normally has with a sit down dinner. I asked him if he was aware that Blue Bayou is inside the park and he said that he did and that he was actually quite looking forward to a day at Disneyland. He asked if I had time to check if they were still out there so that we could firm up the details. One of them was reading outside. She mentioned that they were looking forward to the Monte Christo sandwich. I remembered that this is only available for lunch and advised her accordingly. She said that she would try to ring from Hilo to make a reservation. I asked her to let me know if she had any trouble making a reservation as I would try to see if I could get one through Guest Services at the Grand Californian when we get there.

Once we had sorted this out, Graham headed off to a destination lecture and I decided to do another Fish Extender run for those that were doing all the groups. I had made glass tile pendants with marble-effect Hidden Mickey graphics that I had found online for the women and girls and bottle cap magnets with Stitch graphics that I had got through a seller on Etsy for the men and boys.

With my exercise out of the way, I decided to get my pins before I managed to mislay my wristbands. So I picked up my stuff for the jewellery workshop that I would do a bit later and my wristbands and headed up to Mickey's Mates. The shop itself was quite busy, but there was only one person in front of me at the till. When it was my turn, I handed over my wristbands and asked for one complete set of the pins. While the person assisting me put together my pin set for me, I overheard a conversation at the till next to me. The lady stood next to me had either missed the wristband distribution or the wristbands had run out before it was her turn. She was enquiring when any leftover pins would go on general sale. The person assisting her gave her a date and time. She commented that she had a spa appointment at that time and asked how soon they were expecting to sell out. She was then advised that she should make sure that she is there as soon as they go on general sale. By the end of this conversation the person assisting me was back with my pins. I asked him if it is still the case that I could purchase two sets of pins with my wristbands, which he confirmed. I then asked if the lady next to me could use my spare allocation to get the pins she wanted. He confirmed this. I explained to her that I was only going to get one set of pins and that she was welcome to get the second set that I could purchase. In the end all she wanted was one of the logo pins, but I managed to spread a little pixie dust. She was so happy and both members of staff thanked me. It really was not a big deal. When I ended up paying for my pins, I was surprised that my 10% Castaway Club discount applied. On previous cruises, this had not applied to special purchase items like this. I also got some of the mystery pins, which this year are a jigsaw puzzle consisting of 6 pieces.

Once I had my pins, I still had about an hour until my workshop. I had seen in the Navigator in the morning that they were offering Pick a Pearl in the area in front of the Walt Disney Theater that day. This has become a bit of a tradition whenever I go to Walt Disney World. I always have to get an oyster opened at the Japanese pavilion at Epcot. So I decided to have a go. The oysters were cheaper then at Epcot anyway and they also let you draw a money off voucher towards the oyster. In the end, my pearl only cost me $7. When it was my turn, she asked me what colour pearl I was hoping for. I rather flippantly replied "Well it is Disney, it better be the black pearl". She nodded knowingly and then picked 4 or 5 oysters for me to choose from. I picked one and she opened it for me. My chin just dropped. Not only was it a black pearl, but it was also huge. I had planned to put it in a pearl cage that I had bought from Ebay a couple of years ago, but this pearl was too big for this. So I decided to have a look at the settings. The one I really liked was a rose gold Plumeria pendant, but that was well out of my price range. In the end I fell in love with a little Sterling Silver Plumeria pendant that had a crystal in the middle and the pearl would dangle from the bottom. This was inexpensive for what it was, but I was still undecided. The sales person said that if I purchased the setting, she would let me pick another oyster for free. So I decided to go for it. The second oyster had twin pearls in it, that were also black. She was very quick to point out that she also had matching earrings. I was still on the fence about this and told her that I would mull it over and may be back later.

I headed up to the Outlook Cafe and most of the people participating in the workshop were already there. This time round, we even had a man. One of the people participating had problems with her vision so she brought her husband to help her. Most people finished within the hour, but one person needed a little longer. As I was in a mad rush that day, I asked her to drop in at the workshop the following day to finish off her bracelet.

Next up was lunch. Graham had actually come up to the Outlook Cafe to collect me and we headed to Triton's together. Graham had Chicken Consommé with Leeks, Carrots and Pistachios followed by Sirloin Steak with Grilled Tomato and French Fries. I had Basil and Tomato Bruschetta and Chilled Tangerine Soup with a Lemon and Thyme. None of the adult main courses appealed to me that day so I went with Corn Dogs with French Fries, Beans and Carrots from the kid's menu. We had a bit of a surprise at lunch. Our head server spotted us and came over for a chat. I had come around to the way of thinking that we was about as much use as a chocolate tea pot as we had not really seen anything of him apart from a quick fly by on the first evening. However, it turned out that he was just very sociable and the reason we had not seen much of him is that he simply had run out of time before he got to our table. We had a lovely chat.

We did not have time for dessert that day and there was nothing anyway that appealed to us. I really wanted a photo with Stitch. One of the entertainment staff had told me that this cruise was the very first time that Stitch in his Elvis costume was out for photos and that they needed special permission to make this happen. This was the second session that they offered, but the line was huge. Graham came with me. I tend to get supervised when Stitch is around. Eventually it was my turn and we had our photo taken with Stitch. Stardom had obviously gone to Stitch's head and he was not his usual cheeky self.

Things kind of went downhill from there. I checked my iPad for the meeting place for the stateroom tour and realised with horror that I was late. I was absolutely convinced that we would meet at 13:30, but it was actually 13:00, which made me late. I legged it down to meeting point, but everybody had left. I was hoping that the organiser had the Wave Phone on her, so that I could find out where they were, but I was out of luck. I would have given up at this stage, but I had volunteered to open our stateroom. I knew that our stateroom was the last one. I decided to see if I could find them. I eventually caught up with the group on deck 6. I had seen most of the stateroom types before, but we had one of the Secret Porthole cabins that was new to me and we also had a chance to have a look at the Roy O. Disney Suite. I have to say, I did not actually like it. It had a lot of dark wood and I just found it oppressive. I heard the colouring of the Walt E. Disney is much lighter. The veranda was lovely though.

Once everybody who had wanted to had been to see our cabin, I headed back up to deck 4. I had decided to have my twin pearls set into earrings. They were quite busy. While I was waiting for my turn, I watched other people picking their oysters. It was amazing. She asked everybody what colours they were hoping for and then picked a number of oysters for people to choose from. While I was there, she got it right 100% of the time. Somebody asked her how she was doing this. She replied that she had been doing this for about 20 years and she can usually tell from the markings on the shell what colour pearl is inside. When it was my turn, I had my pearls set into a pair of earrings. She only had one pair left. Apparently they had been selling very well.

Once I had my earrings done, I decided to head up to the Outlook Cafe for the Acupuncture seminar. Graham was already there. In the end it was not the seminar that was listed in the Navigator, but a general introduction to Acupuncture. I have been told more than once that I would benefit from Acupuncture, but it has never appealed to me to have needles stuck into me. After a brief introduction, she asked who thought that Acupuncture is painful. My hand was definitely up at this as where a couple of others. She then asked if one of the people who thought it was painful would be willing to come forward to try it out. I still don't know what possessed me, but I volunteered. I sat down on a chair facing the audience and she talked about the needles that are used. I turned my head to look at her to see what she was doing and realized that I had a needle stuck in my arm. I had not felt a thing. I think my face was a picture. She removed the needle and send me back to my seat. She proceeded to talk about the history of Acupuncture, how it works and which conditions it can treat. At the end she offered 4 free 15 minute consultations for the next day. Graham nudged me and suggested I should go for it. I agreed and put my hand up. She gave me a form to fill out and bring to the consultation.

After the seminar, we stayed behind for a little bit chatting with a couple of people. I suddenly realised in horror that it was nearly 16:00. That was the time that we had arranged to meet in the atrium for a group photo with our Hawaiian shirts that we had custom made for this cruise. I quickly went to our cabin to get my shirt and then headed to the atrium. Everybody was there and in position, but they were waiting for the photography manager who was taking the photo. So I had time to put the shirt on over my dress and sneak in.

GroupPhoto.jpg

Once the photo had been taken, a lot of us hung around and chatted. The photography staff were setting up for another special photo opportunity. It was listed on the Navigator as " The Gang" and they actually had Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale out for a group shot. They were all wearing their Hawaiian outfits and looked adorable. Once the line was open, a lot of us got in the line for this. As we were all chatting with each other the time spent in line passed very quickly.

4314182.jpg

When I had my photo taken, I headed back to the cabin to drop of the shirt and to pick up my swimsuit and my book. I headed up to the Rainforest Room. When I got there, Graham was already there. They had an Ancient Ice Ritual scheduled to take place in one of the steam rooms at the Rainforest Room at 18:00 and Graham wanted to do this. I find the steam rooms in the Rainforest Room too intense and also doubted that I would cope with the ice. A little ahead of the starting time, the fitness instructors came in to explain the process. Apart from Graham, there was another couple who took part in the Ancient Ice Ritual. I stayed on my heated tile lounger and read my book. When they had finished, the fitness instructors stayed with us for a bit and chatted with us and then we continued to chat with the other couple.

Soon it was nearly time for dinner. I had a quick shower and then headed down to our cabin. Graham arrived shortly afterwards and we went for dinner. Dinner that night was the rotational menu at Parrot Cay. Graham had Jamaican Chicken Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Dip, West Indies Romaine Salad, Ribeye Steak with Spiced Butter, Corn on the Cob and Double-baked Potato and Lemon Merengue Pie for dessert. I had Jamaican Chicken Tenderloin with Blue Cheese Dip, West Indies Romaine Salad, Jerk-spiced Pork Chop with Cornmeal Cakes and Curried Peach Relish and Chocolate Vanilla S'Mores Cake for dessert. Anthony's recommendations that evening were very extensive. He normally recommended two items per course. For instance he would recommend a hot and a cold starter, a soup and a salad and a meat dish and a fish or sea food dish. That evening there was a long list of recommendations. Graham asked him if there was anything that he would not recommend and Anthony replied that he would not recommend the pork chop. This was of course precisely what I was going to have and is one of my favourite dishes. I was a little bit worried, but it was a delicious as ever.

Graham was definitely in a mischievous mood that evening and nearly gave our serving team a heart attack. When Anthony brought our salad, Graham told him that there was a rat in the dining room. Initially he looked very worried, but when Graham pointed out the rat to him, he definitely saw the funny side. When our head server came to our table a bit later, Graham asked him was the Portuguese word for rat is. He told Graham and wanted to know why Graham wanted to know. Graham replied very deadpan that there was a rat in the dining room. Our poor head server went white as a sheet. Graham then pointed to the table across the way from us and repeated the Portuguese word for rat. They had a huge Remy soft toy sitting on the table. Our head server made a very quick exit after this.

After dinner, we went to have some photos taken. They only had two backdrops out that day: the white backdrop and a black backdrop. We had enough photos with the white backdrop for now, but decided to have som photos taken with the black backdrop. Unfortunately after couple of photos, the flash stopped working and we gave up.

It was just as well that we had to give up on the photos. When we got back to our cabin, we had a message with a trivia question from the DVC team. They asked that people came up to the DVC desk with the answer by 22:00. So I quickly went back upstairs as it was nearly 22:00 by them. I got the answer right and got a waterproof pouch for a passport as my prize. This was just what we needed. Graham had forgotten to bring the photo card from is driving license and needed to take his passport to get on and off the ship. As he had two excursions booked that had a watery element to it, this was just what he needed. Once I got back, I took a quick photo of the towel animal and then we settled down for the night.

Another lovely update! You sure did a good job of fitting everything in!

The picture with The Gang is fabulous!

Very beautiful setting for your pearl, what fun she found you black pearls.

I'm usually not into the pins but I really like the Hawaii ones, I think I would have done the same as you and gotten a full set. You were so sweet to help that lady, I think a lot of people just wouldn't have thought to do it.

That was a lovely thing for you to do in offering the lady the other set:goodvibes

What a busy day you had today, great pictures:goodvibes

I love those pins they are beautiful....

I am trying to talk David into a Disney cruise....

Now the pins are extra and the photos are extra right? Above the cruise price? Did I read earlier that soda is included in the cruise price, you don't have to pay extra for it?

What are the DVC benefits of the cruise if you go on cash?

Not Corinna, but I'll field this one.

Anything you buy in the shop such as pins; photos; alcoholic beverages; soda at the bars, and coffees and drinks in the Cove cafe and at meals - you pay for.

Soda and coffee at the drinks station on deck 9 and fountain sodas and "non-specialty" coffee with meals is free. "Canned" soda such as club soda, tonic and gingerale are paid for, even at meals.

I haven't found any particular DVC benefits on the cruise - we always pay cash - except you get invited to the "member mixer", a magnet on your door and a little 'swag' now and then.

I am sure that you would love a Disney Cruise. Yes, the pins and the photos are extra. There are various photo packages available as well as a photo CD, which I tend to get. This works out about $1.50 to $2.00 per photo for me. Since we did this cruise, they changed the way the photo CD works. On our cruise you could purchase any prints at a discount of 50% if you bought the photo CD and the photos on the CD did not have any borders. I have since read that they have introduced the same package on the Wonder that they introduced for the Maiden Voyage of the Fantasy. Now the photos on the CD have the borders and for an extra $50, you get all the prints as well.

As to the pins, I normally get a pin or two per cruise, but on both our Panama Canal Cruise and the Hawaii cruise they had a set of limited edition pins and I could not resist those.

Soda is free in all dining rooms, the buffet and 24 hours per day at the drink station. On the classic ships (Magic and Wonder), this is on deck 9 aft. If you order soda at any of the bars or through room service, then you get charged. I never had a problem to get my soda from the drink station. If you drink a lot of soda, you may want to bring some kind of travel mug as the cups that they have at the drink station are tiny. I usually have a cup there and then before getting another one to take wherever I am headed.

There is a DVC Member Celebration on cruises of 4 nights or longer. There is usually some snacks available as well as drinks ranging from Mimosas to other Cocktails. They give out DVC baseball caps to everybody at the Member Celebration and lately they also gave a nice writing portfolio to everybody. On this cruise we were spoiled and also got a blue tote bag containing a DVC cross-body bag. On the first night, you should also get some DVC magnets on the door and a stateroom gift. This has ranged from a journal, to a wooden box to a pin and some lanyards. They do not always have a record of everybody travelling on cash, but a quick visit to the DVC desk on the first evening puts that right. On the longer cruises that we have done, there has been a second member event. There are also usually some random give aways that have includes prints of the resorts, temporary tattoos, pins, etc.

It must now be available at the drinks station, then? or else they heard me complaining - because I used to have to drink 'tonic' water for foot cramps and they brought me a ticket to sign every dinner. Glad you had a different experience!

LOVE your pearl choices, Corinna! Between your beautiful hand mades and your purchases, you must have an AMAZING jewel box.:thumbsup2

I read on another forum that they have (within the last week or two) eliminated the swag for DVC members traveling on cash. It just got too expensive, so we'll have to see as more people report back in.

Well if David and I go on a Disney cruise it will be on Cash... All my points are gone for this use year and next... but I am hoping to convince him. As some of you know, we are not keen on being around a ton of children in a confined area, so this would be a stretch for him. Eating times would be the worst for him...

They do encourage us to use one of the throw-away cups to fill our mugs with however to minimize germs on the dispenser and thus stomach bugs.

Which reminds me I am always impressed at how many CMs we see cleaning surfaces people touch. I am sure this helps reduce the spread of illness as well as keeping the ship looking great.

We cruised on $$$ but did get the DVC magnet on the door and pirate pin. We did not get the blue reuseable grocery bag or the "cross body bag" that Corinna referenced a couple times but we also missed the first DVC Member party. We already have some of the grocery bags so that is no problem. We have more tote bags and backpacks than we can use, but I am curious about what a "cross body bag" is.

Once they figured out how to find DVC members cruising for $$$ (which they had no record of on our first cruises and so had no presents or invitations to the party for those Members) we have always had some DVC items in the room like the pirate pin and magnet on the door and extras like hats and bags depend on showing up at events.

We notice fewer children on the longer cruises which occur during the school year. We also notice fewer at late dining.

I suspect you could ask DCL if there is a dining rotation with fewer children also. And specify that as a request the way you would specify a food allergy.

If you discovered disruptive children in your area of the diningroom I am sure a conversation with the diningroom manager or head of food service could lead to a new table location.

While you would miss the "show" in the diningrooms you could pay the surcharge and eat at Palo.

There is an option for children's Club staff to come to the diningroom to get kids and take them back to the Clubs so children do not have to WAIT for adults to eat leisurely.

We do not mind children but do prefer that all guests be well behaved and have found that we see that with all ages on the 7 day and longer cruises more than the 4 day.

The most rude people we ever cruised with were a group of adults who got their DCL cruise for free from the boss because their company had a good year. He brought them drinks himself at the pool!! They were rude and loud. We even overheard some complaining that they did not get enough spending money. :sad2: "did not get enough" indicates that they got some!! We heard others complain that it was only a 4 day cruise, not a "real" one. They did not supervise their own children either so those kids had to come to the adult pool to find the parents and often stayed in the area adding to the congestion. (The adult pool area on the DREAM is smaller than the other ships and is the only way to get to the forward open deck (14?) which is not age restricted.)

That boss deserves more appreciative staff--they were spoiled brats -- spoiled adult brats.

We have found that you can avoid a lot of the kid heavy areas and activities quite easily. I didn't find it to be any more kid crowded than WDW or any other cruise.

I have quite a collection. I have worn the set I got on the cruise today.

I read on another forum that they have (within the last week or two) eliminated the swag for DVC members traveling on cash. It just got too expensive, so we'll have to see as more people report back in.

I suppose only time will tell about this. I googled this earlier and only found one report that they had stopped the stateroom gifts for people paying cash for a cruise, but quite a few posts from people who have cruised on cash since who had received the gifts. I am not bothered either way. I liked the new pin we were given this time round, but it would not be a big deal for me if I did not get a stateroom gift in future. I can't imagine them stopping the caps and lanyards as this is nice advertising for them.

We are not overly keen on kids when on vacation and Graham particularly has a problem with misbehaving kids. He can go days on a cruise without seeing any. I like having my photos taken with the characters and there are kids around for this, but they are usually well behaved. Dinner never has been a problem for us. We tend to do late dinner and there are not many kids about.

I can't find my DVC backpack at the moment and have been unable to find a photo online. It is essentially a triangular bag with one strap rather than two and the strap goes across the chest.
