Taking nephew - letter required?

We will be taking our nephew in July, will we need to take a letter from his parents for immigration?

Also, at immigration will we be able to go through with him as he is a minor? (He has a different surname)

Î know some have done this, so any advice appreciated

We took a school friend of Matt's. No documentation required but here is the official advice:

We took a letter signed by his parents and took his Mum's passport to prove signature but this was more for Disney cruise line rather than US immigration.

Yes, he was 14 years old (Birthday while there) so we went together.

I often take my nieces or a friend of my DD's abroad with us, I always get a letter of permission from their parent, and I have often been asked to show it (usually, but not always, at UK immigration on our return to the UK after being abroad).

I wouldn't go away without such a letter of permission now, it just makes things much easier and quicker through immigration if you're asked for it.
