Taking Down Holiday Decor

I admit it's one of my pet peeves that the season starts way too early at Thanksgiving, then is scrapped just hours after Christmas. And to find a Christmas movie on Christmas night? Or Christmas music after 6:00? Just crazy.

I am so thankful for the people who leave their lights up until early January. It is so nice to still have that light in dreary winter.
I identify...today I really wanted to listen to Christmas music and all the radio stations I could hear had returned to their original programming. Some had begun playing Christmas music since before Halloween. To me that's sick.

When the kids were little it came down Christmas night, now it’s just when someone wants to take it down.

Look at it this wavy, maybe they are leaving for vacation and don’t want to come home to the tree up, or they put it up really early and it’s ge dry.

We take down all the decorations on the 26th. Our son's birthday is on December 27. I have a sister with the same birthday and she never liked her birthday because it was always lumped with Christmas. We try to make sure that the two days are completely separate. Plus I love the feeling of getting my house back to normal.

We usually take ours down on January 7th, but we are leaving soon to visit family and when we come back we are getting a puppy a few days later. I have to have them down because I don't want the puppy eating anything, puling down the tree, or chewing on the lights! So they came down today. :(

I am just getting around to relaxing & enjoying the Christmas decorations in our house. The weeks leading up to Christmas are so busy, this week is when I finally just relax, hang out at home & enjoy the atmosphere. We take everything down the weekend after New Year's Day. I can't imagine putting everything away on the actual day of the holiday. The idea is just so bizarre to me, why even put it up if you take it down before the actual holiday is even over?

We put it up Thanksgiving weekend. We have a small house & it looks so pretty & cozy decorated & so empty & cold when we put stuff away. When we put it all up, we always say "seems like we just put this stuff away" Then when we take it down, we say "seems like we just decorated". Time starts to fly the older you get! :rotfl2:

Yes. I love this week. All the rush and work is over and now I get to relax and enjoy the decorations, the clean house and all the baking and leftover food. My husband sometimes wants to take things down quickly but I insist on at least waiting until January 1st and often times the weekend after. Of course, we aren’t traveling—that would make me change my mind and occasionally we have had issues with the live tree—drying out, falling over and that can move the date up for the tree to come down, but everything else would still be up. Many years we have a small NYE party and I feel like that is part of the holidays and the house should still be decorated.

Our tree will come down sometime after Twelfth Night. We don't usually put it up until the weekend before Christmas, and I am a sucker for multicolored lights, so I like to leave it up as long as possible; some years there have been more needles on the floor than on the tree by the time we take it down, LOL. Now that we have an artificial tree, who KNOWS when it'll come down??

Lights... right now there's about 18" of snow in my front yard, so it's kinda hard to get to the outdoor trees to take down the decorations. We have icicle lights on the porch; I leave those up all year round. I love their colors and the warm, soft glow they give as we are walking in from the driveway or town in the evening. I love sitting out under the colors in the summer, as day turns to dusk and then darkness sets in, but my lights still bathe everything in colors. So... the decorations in the trees will come down when we can get to them, and the lights on the porch will come down when they burn out- to be replaced by new ones!

We also have icicle lights hung up around our porch year-round that go on using a timer. Much more festive than a regular porch light.

Usually it would be Jan 8 this year but we are getting out of this frozen ice box after New Years for Fla so maybe New Year's Day.

Usually sometime in the first week of January, but this year is going to be earlier as the kids are going away. Stuff usually goes up December 1st, but we were a little (lot) late this year.

The tree will stay up through "Little Christmas" as my family always called it. As it's currently -1 (Fahrenheit mind you) my outside lights will stay on until it warms up and I remember to go out and unplug them.

I usually would always wait until the epiphany but now it's at least after the new year. I'll prob. do a little at a time and it will be done by around Jan 7th or so. I will then put up my snowmen and winter decorations. I hate going back to a plain house after having the house look so festive for Christmas.

We have no exact dates, but generally take the tree down somewhere around the middle of January. I think we put it up about the 2nd weekend in December. But my sister puts hers up within a week of Thanksgiving and it always comes down December 26.

Exactly.

The 12 Days of Christmas start at Christmas, they don't end on Christmas.

Our tree is always up until after Feast of the Epiphany.

This year it will probably come down on Jan 7. Then 10 days later we are off to Disney.

December 25th starts Christmas. I guess they thought they were Advent Trees.

To me the 12 days of Christmas are the days leading UP to Christmas and Christmas day- after Christmas day to me Christmas is over and I am ready for all decorations to be gone. My friend takes them down Christmas night, it usually takes me a couple days after Christmas to get around to taking them down and tonight is the night. There is no way I want to be looking at Christmas things up in my house in January!

I usually take mine down the weekend after New Year's but this year it is going to take a little longer because some of our stuff needs some attention and I want to take care of it before putting it away rather than when putting it up next year. I also want to put the decorations away a little differently (i.e. organized better) than the last few years.

We get a live tree so it depends on how it’s doing and when I feel like getting around to it. Usually on or around New Years. My sister and her family are coming over on the 2nd so I had planned to leave it up until then but bulk trash pick up is the 1st so I’ll start pulling ornaments Friday/Saturday and have DH pull the lights Sunday so it will be ready for the curb Monday. I’ll leave the little artificial tree and the rest of the decor until after our get together.

I’ve always been a little surprised when I see trees out on the curb Christmas Day or the day after, it seems so abrupt. My kids are on break so for us, it’s still Christmas. Only pulled the tree the day after once and that’s because it was dead, dead and had been for a few days.

We only put up the tree this year, no other decorations, my two girls out it up all by themselves about two weeks before Christmas. I took it down and put it away December 26th in the afternoon.
