Taking a backless booster seat question

My DS will be 6 on our upcoming trip. I want to take his booster seat from home, but have heard the stories of luggage and/or carseats falling off the luggage transport on the tarmac, getting run over, stuffed into the bottom of the cargo bay, etc. Essentially compromising the safety of the booster to some degree (I guess?). So is that why some people gate check the booster? Is it safer on the booster to gate check it? Otherwise, I would have just checked it with the normal luggage.

And, has anyone used any safe/compact booster seats that are easy to transport while flying?

Thanks!

When my kids needed them, we would use the booster (backless) type and just carry it on and put it in the overhead compartment. Not that big of a deal to do and easy to carry.

I assume you are getting a rental car and thus the need for a booster seat. If you are using DME and Disney transport, however, just leave it at home as you won't be able to use it anyway.

The PP's suggestion probably is best. The backless seats will fit in an overhead bin on most flights. If you aren't using up your one carry on allowance with another bag, I'd do that. If you do need to check the seat, I would pack it in a heavy duffle bag.

We have taken a backless booster on our past two trips, and carry it onto the plane. It fits in the overhead compartment with ample room (much smaller than what most people try to use as a carry-on these days), and I'm able to stack my camera backpack into the seat.

Thanks everyone! Yes, we'll be renting a car and it looks like bringing it as a carryon will be the best choice.

We rented a car and were in Florida for 2 weeks when our twins were 5 1/2- rather than having one more thing (or two in our case) to cart through the airport etc we made Wal Mart our first stop and they had a 2 pack of booster seats for $30- on the way home we just left them in the rental at the airport. We did drive from airport to Wal Mart with no boosters though.......it was legal there- it's not here where we live- they have to be 8 years old to get out of them. For how inexpensive they are to purchase I really don't know why the rental places can charge so much per day for one- car seats I understand.
