We stayed in the Tahiti building at the Poly two years ago, ground floor unobstructed lagoon view room with view of the castle. It made our trip very special. We're going back in June and just read about the new smoking policy in the Tahiti building. Can't handle that, so now we're searching for a different building. Can anyone recommend a non-smoking building with lagoon and magic kingdom views to rival Tahiti?

I would love to know the answer to this too, since I was also going to request ground floor in tahiti.

Tahiti has the best views and I don't think you can find one that's better unless you go concierge in the Hawaii building. I know you want ground floor, but those views are probably just as good from 2nd or 3rd floor.

I'd monitor the situation before you panic. 1st floor smoking just doesn't make sense when all the other smoking floors are on the top level so the smoke doesn't filter up to anyone else. I wouldn't be surprised if the smoking optional rooms got moved to the 3rd floor at some point.

Also, I believe Tikiman posted that not alll the ground floor rooms would be smoking optional, only some of them. And I am not even sure if those rooms are on the lagoon side. Maybe check his website for more info:

thanks Zulaya,

I saw on his website that the smoking rooms are on the west side. So maybe ground floor east side is still an option. Is there something separating the east and west sides, like an entrance or hallway. That would make it an option.

I wonder if you're right about moving the floor to upper levels. Seems weird to have 1st floor smoking.

I have my heart set on Tahiti (yes I know it is not guaranteed), so I will explore the other options. Maybe 2nd or 3rd floor balcony might be nice.

Checked Tikiman's site and it looks like there will still be 10 rooms on the lagoon side that will not be smoking rooms - rooms 1029-1038. So you have a chance at getting what you want.

It also depends on when you are going. Apparently Tahiti will only have those smoking rooms until Samoa - the smoking building - is finished with its refurb. I can't say as I have noticed exactly how long it's taken them to refurb a building, but my guess is 2-3 months. I am sure Tikiman will be along later today to correct me if I am wrong

I don't know when Samoa's refurb is happening. We are going May 9-13 before we switch over to AKL.

How do they take rooms that have been smoking and make them non-smoking?

I think everyone is overreacting a little. I dislike smoke as much as the next person. I have a very strong sense of smell and I have has asthma since I was born but the whole east half of Tahiti has no smoking rooms on all levels. There are still ground floor lagoon view rooms that are non-smoking. This is a big building and the two sides of the longhouse have the main entrances between them so it is not like the rooms are right next to each other.

As far as Samoa it is down for rehab now and will be smoking when it opens back up (as it was before). I was not told Tahiti's smoking rooms will go away when Samoa opens back up. Infact I am sure they will keep them there for the concierge move and maybe longer.

Aloha

Steve

Just to clarify if anyone thinks I am a little nuts about the smoking thing, I have a son with special needs. So, I probably have to be more careful than most.

Sorry:(

Hey lvstink,

I don't think anyone has to clarify anything. We all have our opinions about how smoking affects us. I too have severe asthma and am very sensitive to smoke, so I was a little concerned about this, but Steve put my mind at ease.

Thanks Steve

It is not being nuts even if it were that you just did not like smoke. We all know smoking is a big issue. Knowing the size of Tahiti I don't see it being a huge problem.

Yes Steve, and you haven't steered us wrong yet!!

If it wasn't for you we would never have tried the Polynesian LVC in the first place, now it's the family favorite!!:D

I have been to Tikiman's site and I can not find the new information anywhere, can you provide a direct link.

I have refreshed the Tahiti page and Nuie page and I don't see any changes.

We were at the Poly end of January. Requested first floor Tahiti lagoon view. When we arrived (very early - 7:30 am), we were given room 1021, a smoking optional room. The smoke smell was terrible. We went back to the front desk and were given room 1015 (only a few doors down) which was available later in the day. This was a non-smoking room and we never did smell any smoke even in the hallway.

Unless policy has changed, the non smoking and smoking optional rooms were intermingled during our stay.

A little off the subject BUT, in october, we were in tokaleu and its a "nonsmoking" building, from the quiet pool one evening we counted 14 people on balconies smoking, and occasionally walking into there rooms cause the doors where open, in the front section alone. I know people say "you can smoke on the balcony" but who is now staying in the smoking optional rooms? So don't worry is its going to filter up to your room cause the person on the balcony next to you has a high possiblity of smoking. The poly really does not enforce the no smoking policy that I could see. This really upset us while staying at the poly, and actually influenced my decision in not returning this summer.

It is not enforced at any Disney resort and many people have posted they were given ash trays by Disney housekeeping to smoke on the balconies and patios of NS rooms.

As being discussed on the DVC board this is a problem for anyone with serious smoke allergies as the smoke from the balcony follows the person back into the room through the open door and on their clothes.

The problem is this is a situation where only the guest is going to do what is correct, and we know what that will be. They will do whatever they want.

I know many have requested NS rooms at the AKL knowing they were going to smoke, because the locations of the smoking rooms are not that great.

That is why I posted it, I have asthma also, and it does bother me. But at the Polynesian the building I would prefer to stay in would of been samoa which has a pool on either side! But is ENTIRELY smoking. However, in october this building (judging by the lights / windows, balconies open etc) did not look full at all. I started to think we would of been better off asking for this building since tokelau was packed. And so many of its guest where smoking anyway.

We stayed in the Poly concerige in july /aug last year also, on the 2nd floor with smokers above us and did not smell the smoke at all. It really did not affect us in the least. We also walked through the 3rd floor of the hawawii building and it really did not reek of smoke or even smell, So I wonder why if they are smokers they are not staying in the smoking optional rooms?

They don't stay in the smoking optional rooms, because they don't want to subject their families to smell the smoke in their rooms. So they request non-smoking rooms and smoke on the balconies. And then it infiltrates and bothers non smokers who have requested non smoking.

Sorry if this sounds hostile. It is not meant to be. I too have very bad asthma. Smoke will trigger a total bronchial shut off for me. And for the life of me I can't understand why people would smoke in non smoking. It is your choice to smoke, I totally agree with that. But it is my choice not to have to suffer for it.

I'm fairly new to all this. Where can I find info on Disney's smoking/non policies regarding rooms at resorts?
