Speaking of Holes, I bought a Cape Cod travel magazine which has an events calendar in it. While we will be there "Holes" is being performed at some youth theatre on the cape. I think I'll try to get tickets. Eric bought the book last year, and I stole it from him and read it before he did.

The High King by Lloyd Alexander (series)
The Thief Lord by Cornelia Funke
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer (3 book series)
Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz (3 book series)
Things not seen by Andrew Clements (also the author of Frindle)

I can give you lots more ideas if you're interested. I just took a graduate level children's literature class last summer to renew my teaching certificate. There are TONS of great books out there!

Morning to one and all! Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend. What did everyone do?

I spent Friday evening visiting a friend and his other half. Had cocktails and food stuff. They were apartment sitting in midtown Manhattan and were also watching the most evil cat I've ever encountered. I've never been afraid of animals but I demanded they lock up the little ball of hate before I'd stay put. No matter where I went, the stupid thing would jump out of hiding and attack me. No joke! And without fail, I'd jump a mile, clutch my chest and scream like a little girl with ringlets! I HATE that thing!

Saturday, we went to a coworkers Kentucky Derby party. Nice time, sedate evening.

Sunday, I stayed in and watch an absolutely horrible 80's horror movie called Blades. It was about a possessed lawnmower that attacked people on a golf green. I loved every minute of it!

Well, it's now Monday and another work week. Enjoy the day!

Oh, and speaking of books for boys, I was a HUGE reader growing up. We all were in my family. But I'm not the one to ask what anyone's kid should read. I got busted in 6th grade for bringing Carrie to reading class. Got sent to the principal's office who then insisted on calling my dad at work. He didn't believe me when I told him that the book I was reading was my dad's and that he gave it to me.

So what did the dope do? He called, demanded to speak to my father who happened to be prepping for surgery (Dad was the commanding officer of the anesthesiology department at the base hospital). He wouldn't get off the phone until my father got on the line. When he tried to speak to Dad, I watched as his face turned pale, said "yes sir, yes sir, no sir, sorry sir" over and over again.

Big bad principal then handed the book back to me and told me to go back to class.

Dad always let us read anything we wanted as long as we were reading. So next was The Shining and on and on.

Morbid kid I was, eh?

Cadburysmom, I would actually in all seriousness strongly suggest A Wrinkle In Time, A Wind In The Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet. All three by Madeline L'Engle.

A bunch of years back, we had friends who lived close by, and we'd get together on Halloween and take turns picking out really bad horror movies.

Rick, have you ever heard of a movie called "American Gothic"? It was a horror flick involving farm inplements? I think I fell asleep on that one.

Okay, I'll admit it--my kids are absolutely NOT into reading. And believe me, I tried reading to them when they were babies--they cried. I tried reading to them when they were toddlers--they squirmed and tried to get away from me. If it isn't physical, they are not interested. Eric had to read four novels so far this year for school and do reports. It was like pulling teeth. If Eric has a choice between going to bed or reading, he'll go to sleep.

I don't understand it. I read. Rob reads A LOT! And everything you read in parenting magazines and you hear on TV tells you that your child is destined to be the french fry cook at McDonalds if he isn't reading Harry Potter by the age of six. Oh well.

Did I mention that Eric is in advanced math?
