Table Manners....

Personally, I can't stand it when people get food on their face, even worse when I have to tell them it's there.

I was having lunch with my good friend and she had a drip of cole slaw sauce on her chin. I waited a few seconds, thinking she would feel it was there and wipe her chin with her napkin. She didn't, so I quietly told her she had a bit of food on her chin. I got chastized for telling her! :(

I will never tell her again if she has food on her face. I will let her walk around all day with it. Love her dearly, she's my best friend for over 40 years but gosh, if I had food on my face I would want my lunch companion to let me know right away.

What did she say to chastize you... I'd love to hear this one.....

If you can assume the deli guy washed his hands, you can assume the others at your table has, because you can not assume at all that the deli guy washed his hands.

Chewing with your mouth open.... Is it better to see someone chewing with their mouth open slightly, or is it better to see them gasping for air after they swallowed their food?

Seriously, with my allergies, there are times I can not breathe at all through my nose from stuffed swollen sinus. No, I don't chew with my mouth open, but I do have to hold my breathe while I chew to keep it closed. I may take a moment to stop chewing and take a breath or two though. It's necessary, I do have to breathe to live. Or else I could be trying to breathe VERY heavily, flairing the nostrils, taking extremely noisy deep breaths in order to breathe and keep my mouth closed at the same time. As I sit here right now and try to breathe through my nose, I can not do it.

As for the bread, I just normally carry gloves with me. That way, I can put gloves on when breaking the bread and putting half back in the basket.... :rolleyes1

I hear ya on the whole trying to eat and breath thing. I thank god that while I have allergies, they aren't as bad as some peoples. The head cold I had over Christmas kicked my butt. Eating slower, trying to take a quick breath thru my mouth even though I had food it because there was no air moving thru my nose it was so blocked. If some of the people on here had seen me, they would have thought me rude, as I tried to keep my head tilted down, so as to keep the open mouth chewing viewing to a minimum. This limited the eye to eye contact while dining with guests.

Wait what? We can't fold our pizza in half anymore either?? :faint: Shoot, that's gonna be a hard one to gain any favor in the NY metro area. The only pizza I don't fold is "un-pizza" (Dominos, Pizza hut, Papa Johns). Real pizza, like back home on Long Island, you kind of have to fold to eat. The grease runs out the back in the "channel" and you let it drip onto your plate, holding the fold by the top rather than the bottom. Also, I tend to blot the extra grease off with a napkin first.

I have lived in NYC my whole life...not folding pizza is my personal preference. I don't think it's breaking an ettiquette rule to eat it flat just as it's not a rule of ettiquette to fold pizza. Or is it?? :confused3

ETA...although I can see where it would be easier to eat it folded if someone is walking around eating pizza but I don't do that. Or, there's the stacking of the slices like Tony Manero in Sat Night Fever. LOL

But on most days I dont find my DH so disgusting that I would not eat a piece of bread he touched. There has been many times one of us takes a roll breaks it in half and offers it to the other.

I mean if I am dining with someone I find that gross, I take my bread first; but really when I am having dinner with my family there is usually a bread basket that goes around the table, I know some of the pieces have been touched by others, I am not that easily grossed out by that.

:lmao: This tickled me.

In general I'm kind of put off by people who seem to view other people as revolting unclean bacterial colonies.

As far as I'm concerned, do whatever you want with your rolls, as long as you don't throw 'em around the table. Or chew them with your mouth open. Or expect me to apologize because I buttered the whole roll and don't see what the big deal is about that.

I don't know how people don't feel stuff stuck to them either. But chastized? I would appreciate it if someone told me I had something on my face.

They have invented OTC meds that work on swollen sinuses.

If I had some food on my chin or face, I would want to be told.

They might not work for everyone.

I can't believe that a thread about manners is now over 20 pages and it's mostly about buttering bread rolls. Plus now I read that we can't even throw rolls at each other! Does anyone else feel like throwing rolls right now? ;)

Yes, yes, I do! But I think we'd get points for it.

Folding is not a requirement. ;)

Now, good pizza SHOULD be a requirement. :thumbsup2

....:offtopic: I'm on the monorail right now.....that's all.....carry on.

Like it's a miracle cure for every single person. You must not suffer from serious seasonal allergies. When mine are severe enough there is NOTHING that addresses the swollen sinuses or the pressure. OTC meds are never a one size fits all..heck even Rx meds don't work for everyone.

I feel like CATCHING a roll at Lambert's Cafe! :cool1:

I find it amusing that some think that the deli person has better hygiene than their own family.
