Table for Humina, Humina?_____completed! 7/30

Shenanigoat your pictures were lovely ... the sunset and the haunted Chinese do-wich-ee. Yes ... hard to believe but I admire the still life in this last post more than the booze. :scared1: I don't like peachy drinks and Jay and I have found in past visits that there is no joy, nor luck, at the Joy of Tea stand. :rotfl2:

BTW ... have you told us your real name or do we have to come up with an affectionate nickname for you based on your user ID? Gawd only knows what this group might come up with.

So true. Its like AA over on the Bendy thread-we've all introduced ourselves and admitted we have a food problem. You've been inducted into the clan...there's no turning back now. :rotfl2:

Nicknames:scared1: jk- It's Laura:goodvibes

just read your reviews! good job :thumbsup2

My name, is actually cooler than my screen name, so cool infact that I didn't change it when I got married. It's Laura, which isn't the cool part, it's my last name Love, which I maybe shouldn't divulge on the interwebs for security reasons, but it's one of those names that nobody believes is real anyway:lmao:. So, it's Laura, Miss Love if you're nasty. uh, Ms.Love- I am hitched, but all my friends still call me Miss Love. They are indeed all very nasty.

Another true story: my dad wanted to name me Megan or Amanda.:sad2: Thank God for my mom.

Nice to meetcha, Laura! :goodvibes

Your name is awesome ... a couple of truly bad jokes immediately spring to mind ... none of which are remotely original and for some reason they are all tied to songs. :confused3

Something goes wrong at work, and a co-worker says it's your fault; your boss says ala' Tina Turner, "What's Love Got to do With It?"

If you are perpetually tardy ... like me ... do your friends say, "You Can't Hurry Love"? :rotfl2:

And the popularity of your reviews demonstrates "The Power of Love". :lmao:

I'm sorry ... sometimes I just can't resist a bad bad play on words - it's a character flaw. Some day if you are interested I will divulge on the Bendy thread all the nicknames I've been given here on the DIS ... that I'm aware of ... and then you can have a good laugh at my expense.

Thanks again for the fun reviews ... highly enjoyable! :thumbsup2

Ocean City is really nice. I liked growing up there because you could walk around late at night and nothing would really happen to you, because all the drunks were elsewhere.:rotfl: I hope you have fun at Long Beach Island:thumbsup2 4th of July isn't the same to me outside of the Jersey Shore.

I know what you mean. July 4th at the Jersey shore is really fun. I'll be in the Point Pleasant area this weekend and then in LBI next weekend. Woohoo, 2 weekends in a row at the shore. Here's hoping for some good weather!

Oh, and I love your picture of the "Chinese Haunted Mansion":thumbsup2

Looking forward to more reviews:goodvibes

I grew up in Park Ridge then moved to Mahwah (both Bergen County...) and I used to go down the the Highlands where my grandparents had a bungalow...

I have family in Bergen County. I don't think I've ever been to the Highlands.

Not sure if you will be in Beach Haven at all this summer, but my niece, May is lifeguarding there... She's already had one save this year :banana::banana:

I'll be in Beach Haven next weekend!!

I live here year round in the Loveladies section of LBI. The beach doesn't have the same allure for us that it does the tourists since we live and breathe it all the time. I enjoy the beach in the Spring & Fall for the peace and tranquility. You really don't get that in the summer. :sad1: If you stop in Walmart in Manahawkin, you may see my son at the register. Cool job for your niece for the summer. Awesome job on the rescue too! Sadly, she'll probably have a hundred under her belt by the end of the season. Hopefully its a calmer season than most and she enjoys her beach time. :cool1: We may have to have a Dis meet if you come down to the area.

That must be great to live in LBI. I love it there! And Loveladies is beautiful. A friend of mine has a house there for the summer so I usually get down there once or twice. But I totally get that it does not have the same allure since you live there year round. I'm sure it is nicer when all the tourists are gone!

Thank you for reading and pimping!

And you missed the one reference classmates really liked to sing at me when I was growing up:

"Love stinks! Yeah! Yeah!"

also people used to like to touch me and say "Can you feel the love tonight?" the list is endless... cue my endless love reference!

It's funny now, then, not so much.

However, it has it's advantages; in school I campaigned for French Club Secretary with the slogan "All you need is love".:wizard:

:rolleyes1:rolleyes1:rolleyes1

(although I don't know if we could have guessed LOVE...)

There are tons of us out there, and none of us are related. People are always asking "Do you know such and such?" "I know a so and so Love..." and I don't know a one of them. I've met another Love or two and they tell me the same thing, that they get asked if they are related to certain people. My last name is actually more common than the Spouse's.:rotfl:

SeAnd to clarify because someone on here asked at some point inbetween storming in like a friendie arm -(that was me!)I do travel to WDW without my Spouse on 100% solo trips. He has never been to WDW, and probably never will go. If he's away from his MLB league pass for to long he gets hives. Someday we might knock me up so that I can have a traveling companion when it gets to be 7, but until then I'm fine on my own. That's kind of why I decided to register, I don't have any amigos who are into disney. They all grew up wthin 20 miles from DL so they are just too punk rock for that.

Hey! I resemble that!!! Pimping... pimp alert... pimp alert....!!
My DL TR: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=1891146

Moving on, I went to the MK that morning to get it out of the way. You see, I love WDW, but DL (the original park) is so much better than the MK.:duck: DL is 25% smaller with 33% more rides. So when I go to Florida now, I really don't need to spend that much time at the MK anymore. I still love MK, don't get me wrong and if nothing else I'm clearing out so that others who love it with every part of their mickey-eared soul can be a little less crowded.

I had actually just been on the Haunted Mansion and the Ghost Host's voice had been going out. It was like the end of The Emperor's New Groove "Is that my voice? Is that *my* voice?"

Emperor's New Groove is one of my favorite Disney movies of the last decade (Lion King Shmion King.. give me Eartha Kitt anyday!). Once I was in the Dr's office and I looked back at my three year old daughter who had, lined up on a chair, in the waiting room, a line of about 5 M&M's and was saying to them, "I'm going to keeeeeeeeeeeellll you" to them as she pointed her chubby little finger at each one. NO, she does not have a Mars Candy grudge, you may recognize this from the end of Emp's New Groove when Eezma turns into a tiny, shrill voiced kitten and screetches OVER and OVER "I'm going to keeeeeeeel you".... oh yea... that was embarrassing.

P.S. DLR has almost all of the WDW(resort) rides now (or some version of).... they will be getting Test Track soon... the main thing missing is Mission Space (you can find a side by side "attractions at a glance" in my earlier pimped TR. :goodvibes

I'll be in Beach Haven next weekend!!

This is my niece... her name is May and this is her College swim tea pic... so if you need someone... she is really strong and swims really good!!!! (and tell her that Aunt Shell sent you...) (and when she asks how I am... lie and tell her the last time you saw me I look like I lost weight...:lmao::lmao:)

:rotfl: I'm lucky that I'm still close enough to the Philly region that people know what the heck I'm talking about when I say jimmies! I'm good about "wooder." Though it always warms my heart a bit when I hear it :cloud9: When I was little I came home from school one day and asked my Mom for a glass of "wooder." She wouldn't give it to me until I said it right :sad2: Good I suppose, but still...it's a badge of honor IMO. According to people around here though, I still say it funny. And Lordy, get some booze into me and the full accent comes out :lmao: Say it with pride! :snooty:

I will say it with pride! Luckily CA is full of people who moved from different places, so we all speak funny.:rotfl:

This is a SPECTACULAR photo

Thank you!

I have to make a note about that Peach tea schnaps thingie. When I get too hammered from the F&W kiosks, that can be my drink reprieve. Sounds yummy. I love your pics-the sky over the WS looks awesome. The sun setting over Disney always looks cool though no matter what. The Haunted Chinese Mansion-I second the spectacular comment-or should it be SPOOKtacular?! :cool2:

If you like peach, it is good and not too strong. A good afternoon drink I think.

A late vote for "sprinkles" here! And trust me, I don't make fun of anyone's accent--Brenda knows what I sound like in person! :rotfl:

Loved the Biergarten review. I'm planning it for this Dec. Do you remember if they still had the wine flights? I always get a glass of the Gunderloch Diva Riesling at the winehaus; it's sweet but in a nice fruity way.

I remember in elementary school they used to serve us kraut and wieners at least twice month--what were they thinking??!! Talk about a stinky cafeteria!

Great picture! Haunted Chinese Mansion is exactly what I thought, too!

Great minds think alike:thumbsup2

just read your reviews! good job :thumbsup2

Thank you and woohoo NKOTB!:woohoo: They were my first concert, and I saw them in Disney World too!

I know what you mean. July 4th at the Jersey shore is really fun. I'll be in the Point Pleasant area this weekend and then in LBI next weekend. Woohoo, 2 weekends in a row at the shore. Here's hoping for some good weather!

I'll go check out your trip report! It's funny that I spend no time on DL boards and live 25 miles from there, but spend all my time browsing WDW.:confused3

And I love your Daughter for quoting Emperor's New Groove. That move is so funny, I love it!

My second full day was at Disney Hollywood Studios. Today was wonderful, because it wasn't freezing!

No Mickey! Don't jump!
DSCI0161.jpg

I had an ADR at the Hollywood Brown Derby for 11:40am, close to after the restaurant opened, so I would have plenty of time to fight the hordes of people running to TSM. My Momma raised me right so I was first at a turnstile, first at the rope, and first to a FP kiosk.

My eyes, they burn!
DSCI0166.jpg

For those keeping track or wondering about such things, I was able to go on TSM 3 times this day. Woohoo! The mad rush of people here was kind of a change for me, because we have the same ride in DCA (with different queue theming) and just a few days before my WDW trip I was able to walk on to TSM 5 times, no problem. Outside of summer nonone is in DCA.:rotfl:

And now for what you really came for, the eats:

DSCI0194.jpg

The Hollywood Brown Derby is a signature restaurant that is themed after the Original Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood, not the one shaped like a hat. I like this restaurant for the theming. I :lovestruclove:lovestruc the idea of the Hollywood that never really was, that rosy tinted version of the late 20's-early 40's. That being said, this restaurant shouldn't be considered a signature dining experiance.

It's really jarring to see t-shirted, fannypacking, mickey eared guests in what is supposed to be a signature restaurant. The service and the food really don't warrant losing 2 TS credits if you are on the DP, but that is just my opinion. I'm actually using the DP for the first time on my upcoming trip and didn't book at the Brown Derby because I just couldn't justify the cost of losing 2 TS credits. That being said, when I return on my next trip the one I'm already plotting in my head for after this Sept trip, I will eat here oop most likely.

I was seated on the far side of the room from where you enter, at one of the 2 tops raised above the sunken dining room. I think the next time I go I'm going to ask to sit in one of the booths, so I can pretend I'm some starlet hiding out for a meal away from her agent, director, and throngs of fans. They have never been even close to half capacity when I come here for an early lunch, so I think they might be able to accommodate me. Besides, who can resist my charms?:cutie:

DSCI0196.jpg

My waitress's name was Laura hey! I like that name, and she was very nice when I told her that I didn't want to rush through my meal. I had packed alot into my EMH morning so far and needed a good sit down.

I ordered one of the Brown Derby's signature drinks, the "Hollywood". It's one of those drinks that doesn't even taste like booze, so tread carefully!:rotfl: This is what my friends and I call a ninja drink.

ninja drink
DSCI0197.jpg

I had forgotten to right down what was in the drink, for my notes, and when I asked the waitress she brought me the recipe!

The Hollywood

1 1/4oz Vodka
3/4oz Chambord
3-4oz Pineaple Juice
Shake and Enjoy

I was given a basket of rolls but they were cold. This is always a bummer to me because who wants to eat cold rolls? That concrete hard Disney butter isnt' going to melt itself.

I'm a sad panda
DSCI0198.jpg

That being said, the rolls were fresh and I still ate one before my meal and one with my entree. I just can't not eat when bread is in front of me.

For an appetizer I ordered the Coconut Shrimp w/ red pepper salsa.

delicous bottom dwellers
DSCI0199.jpg

It looks tiny in the photo, but it's a good size for a starter. The pepper salsa had a sweet little kick to it. I like coconut. I like shrimp. This was good to me.:thumbsup2

For my entree I got the cobb salad, since that is what the Brown Derby is famous for. This is one of those meals that just look terrible, but all of the tastes come together wonderfully.

mmmm mush
DSCI0200.jpg

And for my dessert, since I had the signature drink and signature entree, I got the signature dessert: Grapefruit cake

come to momma
DSCI0202.jpg

Grapefruit is my favorite fruit, after tomatos. It's also my favorite word (well, the french version anyway) pamplemouse! It's so much fun to say. :upsidedow

This cake straddles the line between sweet and tart very nicely I think. I can understand why some people wouldn't really be into it though, I think you (obviously) really need to like grapefruit. There are recipes floating around online for this, and if you go to the Brown Derby they will give you a recipe card for the Grapefruit cake and for the Cobb Salad. Wonderful additions to your recipe box and your scrap book.:thumbsup2

Not being done yet (when it comes to food I am never really done), I ordered a Black Forest Cappuccino. I needed a caffeine boost and some more booze couldn't hurt either.

hey there mister
DSCI0203.jpg

Obviously this is more of an evening drink, but I still somehow managed to enjoy it in the early afternoon.:rotfl2: It has Godiva Chocolate Liqueur, Cherry Brandy and Coffee! This is super easy to make at home, and I make drinks like this all the time at night.

DSCI0195.jpg

And that was my meal, as you can see in the photo above even after a good hour or so the place still wasn't full. Granted this was January, but even in the summer I've never seen this place as full up as I've seen MK, EP, & AK restaurants at noon.

I think HS has the worst choices in all of WDW when it comes to dining, so this is always my best bet. It was a nice slow meal, tasty food, and I will eat here again, but only if paying oop.

The next review will be one of my favorites, and I hope one of yours: Chefs de France!

I will be busy celebrating America's Birthday this weekend, so I don't think I'll have another review update until Sunday night or Monday. I hope everyone has a safe happy holidays and remembers their sunscreen!

MMMMM, love Brown Derby! Now I agree that it's not worth 2 TS credits, but only because the prices don't justify it. We spent more last summer at Akershus for 4 of us than we did at HBD the night before (including cocktails for 2)! I don't think using 2 credits for anything is a good value, but that's another discussion :rolleyes1. We've always had wonderful service & excellent food at HBD and eat there every trip.

The Hollywood is a very yummy drink! Thanks for the recipe, really makes me wonder about the new bartender last year that took 4 attempts to get one acceptable to bring me :scared: Even then our waitress told me if it wasn't right to let her know. Sure wish I had some pineapple juice around....

Next time try to get a booth, and to increase your odds ask about getting a phone call. DD set it up for her brother on one trip. They'll tell you there's an important phone call for you and just like they did in the old days at the original Brown Derby, they bring a phone to the table and plug it in there. They only do it at the booths were they have the phone hook ups. It's very cool :cool1: DS's call was from Goofy

Glad you enjoyed your meal! Have a great weekend :goodvibes

I think they use it as a signature for crowd control... HS doesn't have too many restaurants...

But I like it, even though they took the filet off the menu...

Great review, Laura! It seems very peaceful in the middle of the craziness and the food looks very good. We've never tried it b/c as Chelle said, it just didn't seem to warrant 2 TS credits. This time we're not doing DDP, but I'm still thinking about just going over to Kouzzina that night--we'll see.

It would be nice to see people dressed up a little more in a restaurant setting like BD. I guess that's another reason we've never planned it; if I'm going to a "signature" restaurant, I at least want a shower and change of clothes!

I haven't been to BD in a couple of years now but always enjoyed it in the past. I agree about it not being worth two TS credits though. We do the DDE (TIW) discount and it works out well on cash that way. We made the grapefruit cake at home according to their recipe once but it just didn't taste the same. Have a great 4th! :sunny::drinking1:beach:

Back from the beach, and now I'm all caught up! Great reviews....that Hollywood drink sounds tasty. And count me in as a fan of boozy coffee drinks as well....DH and I are all about mixing up two of our favorite types of beverages.:thumbsup2

And speaking of drinking, I'm going to assume that your parents were pretty lit the night they considered naming your Megan or Amanda with a last name like Love!

Hi everyone! I'm back from the holiday weekend. Thanks to everyone for reading and commenting, I'll have a new review right after this.:cool1:

That phone call is such a good idea! I had no idea they did that. I should tell my Stepdad so he can set it up for my parent's upcoming trip. My Mom would love it.

I think they use it as a signature for crowd control... HS doesn't have too many restaurants...

But I like it, even though they took the filet off the menu...

It could be crowd control. I wish HS had more/better restaurants. It's a weak link in WDW dining.

Great review, Laura! It seems very peaceful in the middle of the craziness and the food looks very good. We've never tried it b/c as Chelle said, it just didn't seem to warrant 2 TS credits. I want to get into Kouzzina for diner or breakfast, if they serve it. I'm guessing they will, since Spoodles did. I just hope you can make ADRs for it soon.

I haven't been to BD in a couple of years now but always enjoyed it in the past. I agree about it not being worth two TS credits though. I tried to make the Grapefruit cake too, and it wasn't quite right either. They must be holding back something in the recipe to keep people coming back!:rotfl:

Ah, gay Paris!

don't ask, don't tell
DSCI0263.jpg

Naturally when dining your way around the (wd)world you must stop in France for a meal. Les Chefs de France was even voted best theme park restaurant for 2009. That's right, the year isnt' even over and this restaurant wins. Suck it Le Cellier! I'm sorry, the Aries in me just loves a victory.

DSCI0268.jpg

Les Chefs de France is themed after a brasserie, which is like a cafe and restaurant all rolled up into one. In the French tradition of dining out it is one step above a bistro, but below a restaurant. This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of WDW and I try to eat here at least once each trip.

DSCI0270.jpg

My ADR was for noon, and I arrived 10 mins early. And waited. And then it was noon. And still I waited. At 12:10 the Manager came out to greet the crowd of antsy/hungry tourists. He just smiled and said "Yes, we are late opening as always." That got a chuckle out of (most) everyone, and we were all let in.

DSCI0271.jpg

I was seated in the front room, right along the windows. When I have lunch here, this is always where I am seated and I'm pretty sure that this is exactly the table I had last time. I like sitting by the windows, but at this particular meal I felt kind of like a zoo animal being watched, as hungry tourists wandered by and would stop and stare at what people were eating. I've never really had that happen before, it must of just been day of the looky-loos.

two can play the staring game
DSCI0275.jpg

My server was Julie, and she was very nice, very efficient, and even noticed my wobbly table and fixed it ASAP. That is what I call service. She recommended a new drink call the St. Germain Cocktail, which I ordered from her.

ninja drink disguised as sprite
DSCI0273.jpg

It was very sweet- a classic blend of sparkling wine, St. Germain, and Perrier. I heard another server recommending it to some of his tables, and saying that there was a contest amongst the servers to sell the most of this drink. Julie didn't mention this to me when she brought up the drink, but I had heard the other server and that's why I ordered it.

delicious bread and cold butter
DSCI0274.jpg

The rolls were warm and toasty, but uggggggghhhhhhh how I loathe cold butter. I don't even use butter on bread that often, but what the heck are you supposed to do with cold butter on bread? It just sits there on top, mocking you.

I ordered what is the single best appitizer in all of Disney-dom. Cassolette d'escargot de Bourgogne, au beurre persille.

that's just fancy speak for snail
DSCI0277.jpg

This is sooooooooo good. I know thinking of slimy critters as a tasty treat isn't something that is easy to do. They are baked in garlic parsley butter, which is just fantastic for dipping your bread in btw. Totally takes your mind off of the cold butter bricks.:thumbsup2 I was blessed with adventurous tastebuds and a cast iron stomach, so there is nothing that I won't try. I read they have these at F&WF, so I will be cleaning out the France kiosk the week I'm there.

if you weren't going to order them before, this picture probably isn't going to help things
DSCI0278.jpg

For those of you still with me, for my entree I ordered the Crepe Basquaise- a large crepe filled with smoked chicken strips, peppers and onions, grilled and served with a mixed salad.

DSCI0281.jpg

and here are the innards

DSCI0282.jpg

This is kind of bbq-y. I know that's not what you'd think of at a french restaurant, but it was. The crepe was perfect- kinda crispy at the edges, light and tasty. The filling was great- smoky, peppery, and the chicken was cooked well. I was glad I got this. It was big though, I almost didn't finish it. Almost. The salad was tasty too, I don't know what the dressing was, but it had a slight zing to it.

For dessert I ordered creme brulee served with a madeleine cookie.

Creamy Brooly
DSCI0284.jpg

Side note for a slightly amusing story: My Mom and I were at DCA eating at the now long gone ABC Soap Opera Bistro. There were these two women at a table next to us who were just totally obnoxious, loud, and more than several sheets to the wind this early afternoon. They proceeded to order the "Creamy Brooly" for their dessert and my Mom started laughing and just could not stop. To this day, if it's on a menu she still announes she will be having the "Creamy Brooly", but does pronounce it correctly to the server. OK, I told you it was only slightly amusing. ;)

So, this creme brulee was quite good. Plenty of carmalized goodness, nice firm yet gooey custard. The madeleine was wonderful as well. I'm actually quite mad for madeleines. I make them at home, and had one of those "You bought what?" convos with the Spouse when I brought the pan home.

Spouse "What's this for?"
Me "Madeleines"
Spouse "What else is it for?"
Me "Taking up space in the pantry?"
Spouse "I thought Alton Brown said there are no unitaskers in a kitchen?"

Why the man who can't even make a grilled cheese sandwich was lecturing me on kitchenwares I'll never know.

So this was, as always, a lovely meal. The service isn't too rushed, so if you are in a hurry you best tell your server. They don't rush meals in France, so you should slow down a bit and enjoy your time here. I did stop to use the only bathroom in France. It's not just a myth!

it does exist!
DSCI0285.jpg

DSCI0286.jpg

DSCI0287.jpg

DSCI0288.jpg

DSCI0339.jpg

So give it a try on your next trip. Order up some tasty snails! Your tastebuds will thank you.:goodvibes

Next review will be:

Flying Fish cafe- the meal where they tried to cook me:scared1:

Hmmmm...so the ninja drink was purely to help out the server, huh? ;) All in the name of helping your fellow man (or woman)! :drinking1 The food at Chefs looks really good. Its been about two years since we went and I think we're due for a return visit. Everything looked delicious-even the slimy slugs. One of these days I will get over the ick factor and try those little suckers.

Okay - this may be the best meal ever ordered:worship:

OMG - Ninja drink, snails, crepe and creme brulee! I may need to make a stop!

And speaking of drinking, I'm going to assume that your parents were pretty lit the night they considered naming your Megan or Amanda with a last name like Love!
